  1. I thought it was agreed OJ is a bust the minute MT made his NHL debut
  2. For instance a money market fund, short term bonds or bond funds, treasuries, basically anything that is a temporary storage place for funds that can easily be turned into cash quickly without taking a loss (or very minimal one at best)
  3. Oh it's definitely not easy.. I think it's good to keep some cash or very liquid investments on hand to take advantage of opportunities when they do come. And yup I agree, taking profits and rebalancing from drifts every now and then.
  4. Yep best way to learn sometimes is the hard way. I am glad to hear that it didnt keep you from investing and you are probably better off from the lesson learned. Cheers!
  5. But those 90% are the overwhelming majority made up of very unsophisticated investors who trade on emotion. Those that are disciplined and dont make panic moves (like selling everything today due to the downturn and instead buying when there are deals out there) tend to come out quite well in the long run.
  6. Yep the CRA says that you cannot treat your TFSA as a business so if they determine that you are actively trading to generate income or trying to exploit a loophole they could de-register the account and hit you with a big tax liability. Ive seen TFSAs that were over $1M in value due to people taking advantage of loopholes in the first few years and CRA is now coming after them with a vengeance.
  7. This is more of a tax matter than investing. The reason your advisor suggested the TFSA was probably due to the amount you will be trading and types of taxable income you will be generating. If you are doing a lot of trading you will most likely realize a lot of capital gains (or losses) which can add up in a non-registered account and leave you with quite a hit come tax time. If you are using mutual funds also be aware of the taxable distributions that are realized by the fund itself as these are passed on to investors (as a mutual fund itself is taxed at the highest rate they pass on the hit to investors who are more than likely in a lower bracket). Basically a good rule of thumb with all things being equal is: -Keep bonds and foreign income producing securities in a registered account (TFSA, RRSP) as interest and non-Canadian dividends are taxed less favorably. -Capital gains and Canadian Dividends are taxed at a lower rate (50% of capital gain is taxed and you get a tax credit on eligible dividends) so those are usually best kept in the non-registered account (again this all depends on if you have maxed your RRSP or TFSA room, not trading frequently, and are looking to better your tax position). Mutual Funds can be a good way to diversify unless you have 100s of thousands to invest but you have to be careful about the fees. There are some low cost manufacturers out there that have great products but it also usually comes at the expense of a dedicated advisor who will help you. What you want to avoid is those providers that have high MERs as well as sales charges (deferred or front end) or advisors that work on commission as more likely then not you will be making them a lot of money as opposed to yourself. Now that being said you also want to take into account the advice and service your receive as sometimes it is worth the extra 1%. Finally unless you have a dedicated and trustworthy advisor or are an accredited investor stay away from margin accounts... You can make a lot of money for sure but you are at the mercy of the lender (margin calls) and can also lose your shirt that much quicker.
  8. I think you are right. With respect to the bolded part though, I dont think is necessarily them lying to people (as there are standards they have to adhere to if they are registered as news outlets) as much as sensationalizing their side or one aspect of the story in an effort to make money as readers eat up that stuff up. Left or right, up or down, whichever way you lean, I think you really have to be smart and get information from many different sources to get the complete picture. I am with you though in that it is scary (i know it does kind of contradict my earlier post) to think of the really young people these days and what the world will be like for them in 20-50 years.
  9. Oh I definitely agree. No slight against any of the posts in the thread I just try not to worry so much or you slowly find fear becomes the master.
  10. Life is too short to live in fear all the time....
  11. I wouldn't be opposed to him playing on the SHL next season as it is a very good league. That followed by a few with Utica to learn the NA game but liking his progress so far.
  12. I'm one of those (probably very very few) that would be in the "what have we accomplished so far" group... Until the nucks win the cup, to me it really matters not... I know many would disagree with me but in 2011 we finished in a tie with everyone aside from Boston for 2nd (aka loser)... There are no silver or bronze medals in the NHL and I don't really care about regular season champs as as long as you can make the playoffs and give yourself a chance at the real prize. Nothing against the post either way just wanted to throw out my honest opinion.
  13. Ouch.... A lot of people getting margin calls today thats for sure....
  14. I think next year you offer both of them at least 2x6M as leaders of the team and community!
  15. Still raining here downtown and has now washed most of the early morning snow away. I agree with Vintage though.. not liking this slush and hoping its all gone before the commute home.
  16. Would there be anything to stop the US if they just decided to roll the army across the border and install Trump as Grand Emperor? Would he MCGA as well?
  17. Its actually changed from snow back to rain downtown - at least where I am now walking past the trade and convention centre.
  18. Nah I think its more along the lines of if they dont play in the league in their draft year they are a complete bust... Or maybe thats only for D-men?
  19. The word is out (has been for a while) that its open season on Vancouver Canuck players... They have no push-back and even if they did, I think it is well known throughout the league that any Canuck indiscretion will be punished by said league to the full extent possible. Players on other teams are not stupid they see how it is and know what they can get away with when playing Vancouver... Unfortunately until we get some more toughness, drop the dead weight, and Aquaman actually 'mans up' and calls out the league on this BS (Benning cant as he will be fined into oblivion) nothing is going to change.
  20. I agree. I think he has shown a lot of improvement but there is a ways to go yet. Although with injuries he may be up for a while but I think he finishes the majority of the year with Utica and will hopefully be ready to take on a full time spot with the nucks next season.
  21. Without the latest ASICs it has to be prohibitively expensive even with the latest GPUs im thinking.
  22. Opinion. I just think that the situation left a bad taste in his mouth... Would i like him back? Absolutely, but not holding high hopes.
  23. He is not going to play for Vancouver again.
