Disagree that he would be fired if they don't make the playoffs. We have been progressing and last year we were out of the playoffs by something like 8 points. We are a bubble wild card team next year, but have made some decent moves to hopefully push us over the top, but not necessarily guaranteed. We are simply needing to fight for a wild card spot this year and if we don't make it, then so be it. We advance more next year and should hopefully make it by then. The Miller deal involving the 1st seems to indicate this mindset so we are protected this year and so is Benning's job. If Benning is fired after this season, something drastic would've happened.

On top of this ^^^, I'm with Theo, I highly doubt he's 'fired if we miss the playoffs' either.

We're quite likely a bubble team this year barring catastrophic injuries or similar. But we could do what Montreal did last year of having a really good season and just narrowly miss the playoffs and I don't think he'd be at any risk of being fired.

Or likewise, we could have an awful season with a bunch of injuries to key players and miss the playoffs by a mile and I highly doubt he'd be fired either.

As I said earlier in this thread, 'playoffs or fired' is FAR too reductive and lacking in context. If we miss the playoffs, why? Does Myers look like Eriksson 2.0 on defense? Are Miller and Ferland both playing in our bottom 6 because they haven't fit? THOSE things might get him fired eventually (on the slim chance they occur). A blanket 'miss the playoffs' though? Nope.

We would have been a bubble team already last year had we been healthy.

Jim Benning essentially went all in for a playoff push this offseason. We are a cap team that sacrificed a future first rounder and dropped about 15 mill on new assets. If Bennings investments don't push us into the playoffs and he isn't fired it'll be because the man is an oversized sock puppet who the Aquilinis shake every once in a while to make him say and do what they want.

  3. I think Makar will take it, Pettersson showed what a difference an extra year of development can do for a player at that age.

Makar is battle tested in the playoffs and will likely be quarterbacking one of the best powerplays in the league. Not to mention being entirely reliable in his own zone, Hughes will likely need to be sheltered with a defensively sound partner.

  4. This is probably a poor take but IMO if you're on the smaller end of the height spectrum and provide little to no contribution in the offensive end you have to Hamhuis-level in your own end. Stecher could get there but he isn't just yet.

I don't see him being part of our defensive core moving forward. He's a serviceable third pairing defender currently but he doesn't have any dynamic qualities that make him worth keeping.

He needs to separate himself in some way from the rest of the players.

  5. Still the best player at reading Pettersson off the cycle, a much better fit stylistically than Boeser even IMO. But it's put up or shut up time for this kid, he can't expect to hold a roster spot with his current compete level.

Unpopular opinion, but I really don't like Horvat on the goal line. I'd try Miller there and have Ferland in the middle. Miller can take draws as well.

Put Horvat on the 2nd unit.

    I don't either.

He makes a lot of selfish decisions with the puck, which is okay when it's even strength and he's carrying two plugs in a north-south style of a game. On the powerplay though? Jamming the puck on net from the side when your up a man is just a waste of man advantage time.

  7. I think the main thing to understand here is that Pettersson will produce regardless of his linemates, he will also draw in the oppositions top defenders on a nightly basis. Boeser and Horvat produce together and essentially lay the groundwork for a 1B line. I think it makes sense to give Horvat Boeser, and have Pettersson take some combination of Miller/Ferland/Goldobin.

    hmm overpayment ?

This makes Ferland Contract a steal.

Compher had 32 points last season..

    Ferland had 40+

Ferland has played with the likes of Gaudreau, Monahan, and Aho so far in his career to generate his 'peak' 40 point totals. Compher was playing with the likes of Tyson Jost and Colin Wilson, all the while being a defensively responsible centerman.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that this board is dedicated to housing Canucks homers.

I actually see Horvat taking another step next year, because of the focus on Pettersson. I think we'll see more of the same Pettersson this year, which will be great. His peak is coming. But, I think Bo will be playing with better players this year, and if he is healthy all year, has a shot at being a top 5 defensive center. That's my hot take for the evening.

That's a fair point. Horvat could very well hit 70 points this year if all goes well.
