Ya..drafting Stamkos, Hedman and Kucherov had nothing to do with it.....
I was obviously referring to the Lightning’s ability to responsibly manage their cap. Give good players to inept cap management and you get Toronto 2.0.

Seems like a bargain unless he's not the player he was with us anymore.
Maybe by a few hundred thousand but we definitely overrated him here. Led by the conveniently-absent OldNews.

The Lightning signing Motte for that much (instead of overpaying for a bottom-six motor player) is why they’re a dynasty and we’re not.

We need to limit this thread to actual updates. I've lost count of how many times I've clicked on this thread expecting a decision from Hockey Canada.

Going “all in” with a playoff tweener team could be the worst thing to happen to this franchise’s future.

Gudbranson is with Columbus now? Will he be able to rack up a dozen teams by the time he retires?
-
Messier was, what, 36 when he came to Vancouver, no? Louie was 31 when he signed and was only ever seen as a placeholder while our core developed.
Virtanen was one of our first “foundational” pieces after management admitted to needing to move on from the Sedin era. Not even drafting Pettersson rivaled the hype surrounding Jake. He was supposed to be the hometown golden boy that was going to jumpstart the rebuild.

Allvin's offseason vs Benning's offseason after the bubble...wow.
We used to think crumbs were cakes. Lol to the Benning years.
Well done Allvin. Yes good to be cautiously optimistic - but omg what a difference competent management can make.
This is still a crumb imo.
The question we should all be asking is what trade is JR going to pull off to alleviate the cap situation. I’d imagine it’s something much more considerable than this.

Ending Sponsorship, means also not funding them, it is far more than “providing them jerseys” they will still be wearing Nike jerseys, they will just be buying them now too.
You sure about this one? Assuming no other sponsor steps up to the plate, pretty sure Hockey Canada at the very least needs to blur out the Nike logo from now on if they continue to use Nike jerseys. Maybe there’s someone here with more legal clarity on this.
One thing’s for sure: no more Nike money. Hopefully now Hockey Canada takes these things more seriously.

With the Canucks having given Virtanen and Cole paychecks, maybe Galchenyuk and DeAngelo see Vancouver as a viable destination.
I kid.

Wow, I've been so out of the loop that I missed Jake getting kicked out of a second division Swiss team!
Jake's truly the gift that keeps on giving (entertainment value wise).

I think my concern here is people were throwing McCann under the bus saying he had a bad attitude. It felt more like rumors to me and I thought it was unfair to do this to, at the time, a 19/20 year old
And the same time, people were fighting tooth and nail to excuse all of Virtanen’s shortcomings on the basis of him being the local boy and a “power forward”. There was zero consistency across the table.
CDC was super toxic back then.

Terrible at the hockey part of hockey. Good luck Ottawa.
This. Zack’s a great guy but he’s not gonna elevate the team to new heights. Not even with a limited role in the bottom 6. Wish him all the best in Ottawa.

The only players on that list worth qualifying are Hirose and Hoglander. We could have done without Kravtsov.

Is this pretty much the D prospects depth chart?
Brisebois - Willander
Rathbone - Woo
Hirose - Brzustewicz
Pettersson - Johansson
Mynio - McWard
Kudryavtsev - Celebrini
Jurmo - Persson
Utunen
Truscott
Brisebois is turning 26 in less than a month. I wouldn’t consider him a prospect at all.

This question was once asked in the Juolevi thread and posters got mad but I believe it’s time to ask the same about Woo.
When does Woo enter potential bust territory? He turns 23 in less than a month.

Overager
Bad skater
undersized
This pick is perplexing to me.

while i am pleased to get the RHD we need Im having a hard time getting excited about the pick. Not sure this helps us for another couple years. Perhaps we can still sign a player to fill the void on the back end this FA class. Mayfield or Graves would be a nice addition to the D lineup.Willander wanting to play for the Canucks is a nice touch.
Drafting for immediate results has hardly worked out. Why insist on it?

I say this - and without exaggeration - Benning is the worst GM in Canucks history.
If you thought we’d be seeing Vancouver win the Stanley Cup in this decade, you can forget about it. But maybe in 2030, once this core gets old and we have to start rebuilding again (assuming we don’t have to worry about dead cap and anchor contracts), maybe (just maybe) we’ll have a GM that’s worth his salary who’ll rebuild the right way.
I just hope that new core wins the cup because if not, I’ll start having doubts about seeing this franchise win the cup in my lifetime.
Thank you, GMJB.

I can’t believe people are actually asking management to give this guy one more year too see if he can recover. Between Arizona and Vancouver, how many “one more year’s” has this guy been given?
Also, Benning’s desperation moves continue to cripple this franchise. WOAT GM.

It's fitting to see Miller mentioned on here so much if only because he's the most relevant Canuck comparable to PLD in terms of attitude.
I'd take PLD over JT based on age alone. He's a great player.

Without it , the Canucks wouldn't have a single bad contract at the end of his tenure. But hey , worst GM in history.
I wish it were as simple as evaluating what’s left at the end of his tenure.
Doesn't change the fact that we were saddled with contracts like Eriksson’s and Gudbranson’s throughout his tenure.

What I want to know is why we’re excluding OEL.
Hell of an anchor to omit.

Not sure why you’re quoting me. He was a long shot reclamation project when the Canucks squired him and he did nothing to raise his value. Now he’s taking his puck and he’s going home. Guy was a huge waste of a high pick
Where’s OldNews when you need him?
He’d have already written a dissertation on how Kravtsov packing his bags to Russia makes this trade a home run win for the Canucks.

[Report] Canucks name Quinn Hughes as captain
in Canucks Talk
Posted
I remember we had a poll a few months back and people seemed to side with Petey as most valuable player.
I maintain that Hughes is this franchise’s most valuable player due to position alone. You don’t get very many mobile offensive defensemen of Huggy’s caliber in the league. Deserved.
