  1. How about people laughing at you thinking he was NHL ready this season :).
  2. Honestly, he should be kept in the UND system. UND has been very solid at developing players and Benning doesn't have to rush him into the NHL like he did with JV. Patience is the key. It'd be a shame to screw with Boeser's development.
  3. Virtanen needs to learn from someone who exhibits his same style of play. The Sedins rely on agility, intelligence, and finesse. And while they may teach him a thing or two about positioning and awareness and such, I don't think that they'll have as much of an effect on him as everyone would believe. Having someone like Kesler (as much as I dislike him) show him his game would have been invaluable imo. And while I understand that Prust and Dorsett would be mentoring him on the physical side, I still think that we need physical players with more pedigree to show JV the ropes (who we need to become a top 6 forward). Frankly, it's worrying that two borderline NHLers are the most familiar comparisons to him on our team.
  4. The whole "criticize management" theory is only welcome around here when it works for your agenda. Got it. All I'm saying is that there's sufficient justification for management to not want to send JV back to his junior club. It's worth the mention that despite Gaunce playing better, the org was better off having them both develop in the AHL and NHL.
  5. That is quite the long sabbatical you took lmao. You'll be pleased to know that the forum held a vigil for you in your absence. What else is WD gonna say? Gaunce outplayed JV but we're keeping JV with us despite that? As others have mentioned, at the end of the day, Gaunce goes back to a well managed Comets while JV would have gone back to a disastrous Hitmen.
  6. Go ahead, take a break. If you think anyone's gonna stop and weep then I'm sorry for you LOL. And no, JV did not outplay Gaunce in the pre-season although young gun fanatics love to think that.
  7. That's because Detroit has a slow development model that requires their players to spend time in the NHL Instead, CDC is too bent on seeing the latest flashy picks make the jump to the NHL. Must suck for Shinkaruk and Gaunce to turn on the TV and watch Virtanen eat up their spot.
  8. What this tells me is that you did not watch one Calgary game last season. All I see are stats (which are frankly quite poor for a #6 at junior level) and justifications. Had you tuned into the Hitmen once in a while, you'd see that JV was actually underwhelming most of the time. He'd be the epitome of tunnel vision for multiple shifts at a time before logging in an occasional highlight reel hit/goal/burst of speed. You see, a WHL coach and organization probably know better than kids who search up stats on hockey's future or highlight videos on YouTube. JV didn't touch the first line for a reason and honestly, the Hitmen were better off leaving him off it.
  9. The whole "power forwards are a rare breed in the league" premise is false nowadays but continues to get used to JV's advantage. Most teams have decently-sized forwards who enjoy physicality and go to the net. This is nothing new in today's NHL. If you're referring to power forwards with Rick Nash or Jamie Benn-like offensive potential, well he still has to prove that he's even half as good. Until then, there's nothing "rare" about JV. I've agreed with most of your posts but I'm just wondering why you think that he's too good for the Hitmen. Injury or not, he only had one above average season there and it wasn't his latest one. He wasn't even a first liner. The more I learn about the Hitmen management, the more I suspect that JV's inclusion in the Canucks this year could be because of the dire conditions of his junior club. Should JV have been in London or Belleville for example, I'm not so sure he'd still be here.
  10. Just stop. No one agrees with your initial statement and now you're trying to fluff it up.
  11. Are you for real? I'm having a hard time taking this post seriously.
  12. It's extremely worrying that you actually think this.
  13. No one's gonna shy away from proclaiming Nylander and Ehlers busts if they don't put up points. Heck, I'll be the first to do so. At 6th overall, JV has to do more than just hit and play aggressive so that same parameter you've placed on the others should be placed on JV too. But I'm guessing that there's gonna be a double standard around here.
  14. I was projecting, not talking definitively. The guy I was responding to was basically alluding to the fact that JV may not ever be the offensive guy we need but that it's alright because he can hit and is very fast.
  15. Baer and Vey may not project to be longtime top six forwards but I'm scratching my head as to how you can compare them with the latter two. We still don't know how Ehlers and Nylander will fare. For someone who tries to be as 'logical' as possible, this premise is impossible to conceive at this point. If Nylander and Ehlers become top six forwards, they will be key to whichever team they're on. And while you're at it, the same standard should be applied to Virtanen. You may be a high-hitting, hard energy player but if you don't put up points, you're always gonna be a fourth liner.
  16. I think you miss the whole point. It DOES matter what JV amounts to. He's our highest pick in more than a decade. When JB picked no. 6, the onus was on him to pick a player that was gonna be a key piece of the puzzle in the team's future. Picking 3rd liners at 6th overall will not make the Canucks successful. We absolutely need Virtanen to become a consistent top six forward.
  17. That and maybe his piercing blue eyes? It wasn't his play on the ice as much as JV apologists want to believe.
  18. So you dislike Nylander (who's up there fighting for most goals in the A) and Ehlers (a Calder candidate) but you like the very definition of a pitt bull in Nick Ritchie? Did I understand that right? What happened to the Canucks that were predominantly based on skill that won 2 presidents trophies and came within 1 game of the Stanley Cup? And yes I know Ritchie is ppg for now but this proves how there's a double standard between big and small players on this board.
  19. It's precisely because I care for this team that I'm against his inclusion, at least for now. And for the record, I'd love for him to become a great player. Doesn't change the fact that he clearly doesn't belong right now. I also agree that everything that is said in this forum makes no difference. My complaints won't make him worse and your support won't make him better.
  20. I think the main qualm about Virtanen is that for some reason he was deemed good enough to play in the NHL by JB. Now, if you're deemed good enough to play for the big boys at 19, you better be able to at least hold your own. He shouldn't have skipped the process that guys like Shink and Gaunce are going through, he's not that outstanding of a talent. the latter two have done their time, have a matured, and pose a better reason for being able to take the next step into the NHL.
  21. Flawed logic. Hutton's, the Sedins,' and Burrows' mistakes are overshadowed by the positives they bring. Virtanen's mistakes are overshadowed by.... err.... his checks?
  22. This. Not here to rant on JV but I feel like many of us are suffering from "shiny new toy" syndrome and aren't acknowledging the fact that Shink has done his time, been developed properly, and is now bearing fruit in the AHL. JV's time will come. Clearly, his time isn't now.
  23. Your analogy would be correct if I did this throughout the forum. I always commend Hutton, Horvat, and McCann as I truly believe that they're coming along nicely. I just don't think that JV is NHL material atm and this apparently ruffles jimmies. The time reference was more or less to say that with time my claims will either prove to be right or wrong. It's that simple. You think that I'd like for him to fail but as a Canucks fan, that's completely false. I just don't think he's that good, period. lulz, I'm sorry if I struck a nerve kid. I watch all the Canucks games I can, which is what baffles me the most. The fact that people are watching the same player and think he's "doing great" is making me question my sanity/sight. If you've kept track of my posts, you'd know that I'm not pessimistic about player development. I'm high on Shink, McCann, Hutton, etc. but I'm not that high on JV and I think he has not justified being picked 6th overall. I reckon that deep down, some other posters feel the same way but won't up and admit it for the sake of not coming to terms with laying an egg in regards to our highest pick in what, more than a decade? Speaking about expectations, is this what you expected our 6th OVERALL to look like a couple years after being drafted? And it's not like his performance is night and day in comparison with his junior tallies. The fact that he was so lackadaisical with the Hitmen (inb4 Hitmen suck, it's not his fault, etc.) worries me more. But it satisfied JB's craving for a nice, big power forward and that's all that matters, right?
  24. All this tells me is that you have insufficient material from which to construct a decent defence of the boy. This thread (when it comes to not gushing over JV's play) has had such an awful debate because only uselessstats has even tried to use statistics and gameplay to back up the fan boyish tendencies. Fair enough. What's great about the concept of time, though, is that it doesn't matter how much you gang up on that one hater. If JV continues to play like this, I'd love you see these posters try to retract their stance and make it so that they were always skeptical.
