Says the kid who's on here all the time with 6,343 posts living in his mom's basement, jerking off at the idea of insulting other posters on an internet forum. Give me a break, kid. If I cared about my internet alias as much as you, I'd avoid posting negative posts about JV and therefore incurring the wrath of CDC . Because the level of delusion here about a guy who got drafted 6th and who only hits well is at an all-time high. I understand that the guy is learning the game and that he's on the curve but unless he can learn and play at the NHL level, we shouldn't be shouldering his deficiencies. As you said, "this place can get ahead of itself in terms of hyping players." That's an understatement to say the least.

Because him making the team this year means that he's made it Really?
-
This is the biggest misconception around these boards. Elite skill is elite skill and we're not the small, fragile team we used to be anymore. In the line-up, we have Prust, Dorsett, Sbisa, Sutter, and Edler... all guys who are not afraid to throw the body. Also, only Weber and Baertschi are under 6 feet. So please stop using the "we don't have room for that kind of player" argument anymore. Benning has made sure that we're not physically pushed around anymore.
-
So basically physicality. So much for a "check mate." So Bennett's slow start to the season is reason enough to justify Virtanen being on the team? Also, Virtanen had ONE good goal scoring season if we're talking about WHL and up. This is not proven. The fact that this post got upped 7 times really makes me wonder...
-
Right, because what's been said is completely ignorant. I'd welcome a good debate but it's impossible to establish one if one side only has hypotheticals and statements about potential to back up their claims.
-
You know you don't have much to go on to defend Virtanen when all you ever do is post face palm pics. No stats, no variables, no nothing from JV supporters. But that's none of my business.
-
Confirmation Bias: the tendency to search for, interpret, prefer, and recall information in a way that confirms one's beliefs or hypotheses while giving disproportionately less attention to information that contradicts it. I agreed with uselessstats in saying that there's no use in bemoaning picking JV but it's posts like these that make me face palm I'll bring this quote up again in a few years but by then you'll have come up with an auto-defense mechanism, I"m sure.

I started posting in this thread yesterday because I was responding to a poster who said that "Ehlers would have never made it here." It's flat out delusion to mask the fact that we picked the wrong guy. Now, I'd love nothing more than for JV to succeed here but CDC has to take down their expectations of him a few notches. I'll bet my account that he'll never be a first line player and we'll be lucky to see him be a second line mainstay. I hope for the welfare of this franchise that he rounds out to be a top six forward.

Armchair? You do realize that I'm the one agreeing with Willie right? Armchair coaches are the guys who are posting in this thread saying how Willie is such a silly manager and how their proposals are so much better. It's obvious at this point that Virtanen is simply not ready for the NHL yet CDCers still somehow convince themselves that it's because of the minutes he gets. Weird, I completely agree with this post. I feel like people here are slowly realizing that maybe JB didn't pick the BPA. They won't admit it now but they will soon enough. The whole "his physicality suits our needs" will wear off just like it did with Kassian.

Dorsett is a fringe NHLer for a reason. JV was drafted 5th overall. It's insane to even compare the two.
-
"played well" "Almost" Are we supposed to give him a blue ribbon for participation now? You're a winner as long as you try, right? Or so I was told in kindergarten... Willie's use of JV is aligned with JV's performance. The guy has not played well enough to warrant an increase in ice time. It's that simple. I'd have a beef with Willie if he ignored all logic and played JV more despite his lackadaisical play. Ehlers is getting more ice time because he's actually producing. You're comparing apples to oranges here. As Willie said it himself, “It’s not the try league, it’s the get-it-done league.” Yes, JV may throw the body and he may like to shoot the puck (albeit right at the goalie's chest) but he has to produce to warrant ice time. It's always been that way and always will be. CDC has always knocked Ehlers fans for being way too fanboyish but all I see right now is one side solidifying their claims with stats and the other trying to fool themselves with promises of potential and JV's imposing body type. Wake up.
-
I think he's our best prospect out of them all. Seriously impressed by him so far.
-
We can keep telling ourselves that Ehlers will always fail at the Canucks or we can be more realistic and start to question if JV was really the best choice. JB may have dropped the pin on this one.
-
JV's pre-season is also overrated around here. You don't get into an NHL lineup by throwing the body, being speedy, and chucking in a couple points. Rookies tend to get into lineups by showing that they're responsible (both positionally and defensively), and also producing points. That's how Bo got in. Gaunce, IMO, showed that he has NHL maturity and that he can be effective at this level now with his AHL experience under his belt. The fact of the matter, as much as people disagree, is that JV is the shiny new toy and Gaunce is that toy that's maybe not as flashy as it seemed before. Everyone seems to agree that JV is really raw. He has brain farts at times, shows glimpses of amateur mistakes, and is sometimes caught floating around. I'm not saying that he sucks; I'm simply saying that he's like Justin Trudeau: just not ready.

Doesn't matter how hard a snap shot he has if he can't score consistently with it. Basically, the whole point of having a good snap shot is to score. Try to tell me otherwise. In regards to Sutter, points is probably the biggest factor when playing on the first line (YES, the Sedin line IS the first line as much as CDC wants to say that we're rolling four equally good lines). He may be great at forechecking but he has to produce consistently. Go ask the Penguin fan base if he should be a perma-first line player and they'll laugh. There's a place for every player and Sutter's place is not on the first line (even though the Sedin's will make him look good at times). Do tell me, do you feel confident having a guy like Sutter on the first line all season? Be honest. As for JV, being able to make the team is relative. I don't think he had a horrible pre-season, don't get me wrong, but he didn't play well enough to beat out the players in front of him. We can only have so many forwards on the ice. If a guy like Gaunce (a player who btw had a better pre-season than JV) got cut, why should JV make the team? Because he's young and exciting?
-
I have. Are you saying that after having watched Sutter play with Pitt, it's a foregone conclusion to say that he's better than Bonino? Let me remind you that I hated Bonino on the second line, I'm in no way a Bonino supporter. I digress. I still think Sutter won't pan out on the first line. Saying that it's a small glimpse of what's to come after one game is the epitome of jumping the gun. Yeah, he's a great forechecker but his skill leaves a lot to be desired. Everyone who's been a Canuck fan for a total of one week knows that the Sedins have the uncanny ability to make just about anyone look good. It's what happens as a result of their chemistry. They did it with Hansen, Kassian, Burrows, Vrbata and even Sestito. The question is who can maximize the production of the Sedins, not who can fit in with the Sedins. Almost anyone can look good with the Sedins and you know it. Sutter is someone who'd be great on the third line because of his checking abilities. He is not a second line centre on a team that wants to do decently in the playoffs let alone a first line one. As for Virtanen, I keep hearing that he's the whole package (I know, we're in a Canucks forum so every prospect is the second coming of Gretzky) but the guy has yet to show it consistently even at WHL level. His 'wicked' shot I'd compare to Sasquatch because there's always glimpses but the guy doesn't score enough to justify it. As for his IQ, if he has above average IQ then I'd like to see what average IQ looks like in your opinion. I'm not hating on JV, I just think that he needs more seasoning in the juniors. Yes, I've watched the pre-season and I still don't understand how his pre-season play has justified a spot on the main team. And before you say that I'm 'hating,' just remember that rushing a prospect in too soon can seriously hinder his development. I know it's exciting to see a youth movement, but it's not his time yet.

The fact that you guys base this off of one game helps solidify why Canucks fan boards are seen as some of the most delusional in the NHL. You were being sarcastic right?
-
To be fair to the guy, you guys cannot claim those things in absolute. JR: We're one game in. We simply cannot say that Sutter has been a success. So chill. Alfilives: "completely Wrong" and "that's that" is something a delusional fan on a fan board would say. You're speaking as if your word is fact. We still don't know if Jake was the best player to take at #6 and some of the guy's points are warranted as Jake has played far from lights out. And THAT's a fact. Some of the condescending/lordly posters on here have to take a chill pill and understand that this is a forum. This thread is called "Jake Virtanen Talk" not "Say Nice Things About Jake Virtanen and Smile."
-
Likewise, what is there to gain from overhyping someone who simply hasn't played well?
-
Tbf, you need to have a lot of skill to make Bozak look like a competent 1C... and all while putting good points up on the board. If Kessel isn't elite, then there's a very high cut-off for being 'elite.'
-
LOL yikes. I don't even think Horvat will be a 1C, to think that all four have that potential is lol worthy.
-
Great. He can hit and he's fast. Let's take him at 6.
-
It's not exactly breaking news that JV's most developed tool at this stage is his hitting. I wasn't referring to the video specifically but what JV brought as a whole. If we wanted a banger, we could have waited until later in the draft. I know people are saying to look at his overall toolbox and that looking at the stats is only part of the equation but I personally feel like JV should be putting more points on the scoreboard given the position we drafted him at. His points total at Calgary wasn't all that great and while he showed flashes of brilliance at the Comets, he didn't exactly light it up there either. Taking all this into account, I don't understand how people are even slotting him in for the 9 game NHL tryout. Dude still has a lot of growing to do. There's no point in rushing our prospects at this stage. We're just starting a rebuild and we're nowhere close to competing for the cup. JV doesn't have the maturity and hasn't shown the consistency Bo showed. Let him develop in the minors.
-
Great, but I'd expect more from a guy who went 6th overall. Highlight videos will make any plays look good but the fact is that JV has under performed considering his draft position. He will not make the Canucks this season. Believing he will is merely wishful thinking. Dude has to get himself together at Calgary before he starts to think of putting up points consistently in the AHL, let alone the NHL.
-
Without Vrbata, we wouldn't even be in the playoffs... Also, Virtanen will be in the juniors next year. He still has a lot of developing to do.
