You are right. I know of the Brick tournament that happens at the Edmonton mall each year that a ton of future NHLers played at including Stamkos, Del Zotto, Tyler Johnson, etc. That tournament is for like 10 or 12 year olds I think.
Then there is the tournament in Quebec for 12 year old PeeWee players. Just the way things are these days it is so competitive now with the lure of scholarships and money on the line.
Some parents pay these services to make highlight clips to send to scouting services to connect them to high level teams to get noticed.
I would think nowadays if you are not on the radar by 12 maximum you have very little chance of making the NHL if you didn't play for a top minor hockey association like BWC or NSWC.

I'm also amazed when guys like Ryan Johansen become a first round pick playing minor hockey in Port Moody. Most of the BC kids drafted like Fabbro,Barzal,Ronning, played at Burnaby winter club which is hella expensive to get into.
Also the Reinharts and Morgan Reilly grew up in West fan playing at the private Hollyburn Country Club.
Same with North shore winter club where Evander Kane played his minor hockey.
