Pettersson 1st Quarter: F 2nd Quarter: F 3rd Quarter: C+ 4th Quarter: A Pettersson was on a one way street to having an epic failure of a season until Game 50 or so. Regardless of injuries, off-season contract negotiations, missing training camp, whatever, he has worked his way back into the discussion of one of the top players in the NHL under the age of 25. But his entire body of work remains a lot to be desired. @*Buzzsaw* - you are awfully generous with your "grading" of the players. The team missed the playoffs, so other than Demko, Miller and Hughes, I'd probably knock down 2-3 points per player for their whole season grades. For play/production for the entire season, I would rank as follows: 1) Exceeded Expectations: Demko, Hughes, Miller 2) Met Expectations: Horvat, Pearson, OEL, Podkolzin, Myers, Schenn, Lammikko, Highmore, Burroughs, Dries, Dermott 3) Below Expectations: Pettersson, Garland, Boeser, Hoglander, Chiasson, Hunt, Richardson 4) Has no business being a Canuck: Dickison, Poolman, Petan, Halak When only three of your 1-6 forwards and three of your 1-6 dmen have either met or exceeded expectations (by my account), you don't deserve to be in the playoffs, which is where the Canucks find themselves. But, if the Canucks keep trending as they did since Boudreau came on board, we have a lot to look forward to.

For the kind of money you're being paid 70 points is a LOW STANDARD. These low standards you have set for yourself will be a huge impediment from you becoming a bonafide star in this league. It may have been good enough for the SHL, but if you're not striving for 100 while playing a 200' game, then you'll be just another skinny Swedish kid that never fulfilled his promise/potential. Back to Buzzsaw's question...YES. After the team fell into irrelevance under Benning and Green, it took a herculean effort by Bruce Boudreau and new hockey ops team to right the ship. The team was undermanned for good portions of the season under Boudreau, but the boys gutted it out (thanks mainly to Demko's brilliance) and made hockey in 2022 a lot of fun. Three things that I'll take away from this season - how hard it is to make the playoffs (and how meaningful regular season games, especially in October/November, are); that it took Boudreau's f-bombs to finally wake/shake up the leadership group to show up in the first period; and how important Demko is to the fortunes of the Canucks team. Lots of great stuff to be excited about...Demko's brilliance, emergence of Miller as leader of the team, Horvat hitting 30 goals, Pettersson finding his stride in the final quarter/third of the season, Hughes controlling the pace of the game and playing soundly in his own end, PK finding its groove, PP finding its groove, emergence of Podkolzin as an important everyday player, and OEL re-finding his game. Some things we can do without...Boeser the disappointment, Pettersson being a human zamboni for 60 games, Halak the sieve, Dickison's big talk about being a hard player to play against and having more to give offensively, Poolman's inability to swim in the deep end, Hoglander's brutal defensive game, Garland falling off the cliff after Boudreau's arrival, and relying on Hunt to be the number 6 guy on the depth chart.

[PGT] Seattle Kraken at Vancouver Canucks | Apr. 26, 2022
bigbadcanucks replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
What was the loud-mouthed mayor of Seattle saying about Vancouver this past off-season? -
That maybe true, but Pettersson is no way a superstar in the NHL at this stage of his career. Until he can play at the level of Pavel Datsyuk/Henrik Zetterberg on both sides of the puck on a nightly basis, he'll be a good/gifted player with the POTENTIAL to be a superstar. Pettersson couldn't crack the top 50 in scoring this season, and that is what he's paid $7M+ to do. An offensive player who's career PPG is slightly above 0.9 is not a superstar in my books. A couple of two-way dominating seasons like Barkov/Bergeron/Toews, or a couple of 100+ point seasons will be a conversation starter. Til he's done that, Pettersson is not even close to being a superstar. And for the love of God, Pettersson needs to stop being a human zamboni. They've got machines to clean the ice.

Another Legend Lost - Lafleur Passes Away at 70
bigbadcanucks replied to HKSR's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Another sad day in the world of hockey. Still one of my favorite goals ever scored... -
To all those who were offended when Allvin proclaimed there were no superstars on the Canucks roster...well, there you go. Everyone knew the day would come when Quinn Hughes would be proclaimed a superstar. April 20th, 2022 marks the day that he's been ordained a superstar by Byron Bader. Validates everyone's expectations of Quinn Hughes becoming/being a superstar. IMHO, two superstars on the Canucks -- Demko and Hughes. Jury still out on Pettersson.

Lack of AHL Player Development - Skaters
bigbadcanucks replied to canucklehead44's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
May I suggest you book an appointment with an optometrist? I guess you haven't been witness to Hughes' effectiveness on the PK since Boudreau has given him some PK time. I would cap it at two smallish defencemen -- Hughes and Rathbone. -
The Old Testament is all about fire, brimstone, hell, damnation, wrath of God, etc. The New Testament is about hope, forgiveness, redemption -- all because a man named Jesus was hung from the cross (as chronicled in the New Testament). That is what Good Friday and Easter is all about to me...that no matter what, if we accept Jesus as having died on the cross for our sins and ask for forgiveness with humility, it will be granted and a place will be prepared in heaven for us. As fantastic and far-fetched as that may be, it sounds full of hope to me. Christianity was politicized by the Romans to justify their quest for building their empire (hence, aligned with your thought that religion was/is control of the masses). Augustus needed one religion to move his agenda for building out the Roman Empire and Christianity was the ticket. Until then, the Romans operated under polytheism and it was a cluster phuck of beliefs. Once the empire building took began, all sorts of atrocities were committed by the Roman Catholic Church/Roman Armies underpinning the ambitions of Emperors and the Popes they appointed. The Roman Catholic Church is the single largest and most influential institution there is in the world. Gonna sound like a tin foil wearing conspiracy theorist, but the Vatican and Roman Catholic Church controls pretty much everything out there -- the Vatican is one of the three epicentres of global control.

I'll preface my remarks with the following: these are my beliefs, and I wish not to impose my beliefs on anyone. My beliefs have been formed over more than five decades of life experiences. as part of my beliefs, I believe religion is a man-made institution to serve man's needs; spirituality, on the other hand is about one's personal relationship with a higher being. In my case, the higher being is the Holy Trinity - Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. as a Christian (which literally means being Christ-like), I am an epic failure. I curse, I don't always love my neighbor, I've coveted others' wives/girlfriends, I don't always honor my parents, I've cheated, I've stolen, and broken all the 10 commandments with the exception of killing someone, though in my mind I'm probably guilty of this commandment. I'm a terrible example of what a Christian should be, and I know I'll have to make account of this when I face Saint Peter. a lot of what I write is based on my belief that the Bible is the word of God (penned by men who were inspired by God), though over the years, I'm sure there has been a lot of further human interpretations (there's a ton of different versions of the bible out there...King James, New International Version, etc.). my responses are oversimplification of deep rooted beliefs. Though I'm called to be a disciple for Jesus, what you believe in is your business and I'm not here to try to "convert" anyone. My responses to the compelling questions being asked by OP: a) Is there truly a battle between good and evil that is beyond our Earthly realm? I believe Lucifer is Satan, and his army of fallen angels are everywhere among us perpetuating evil. There is a constant spiritual warfare between good and evil that goes on each one of us, and Satan attacks those who strive to get close to God. The battle between good and evil actually manifests itself here on earth. I would cite Russia's invasion of Ukraine as an example of good vs. evil. The invasion is bad enough as it is, but the atrocities that have been reported is pure evil. b) Why would a Jesus figure wait until 2000 years ago (and not intervene when humans walked the Earth tens of thousands of years ago? Jesus is the incarnation of God in human form (i.e., the second part of the Holy Trinity). Why God would reveal himself only 2,000+ years ago is a mystery to most Christians, me included. What I know and believe is that God has a divine plan that I and most Christians are not able to understand. This is part of having faith (i.e., believing when there is no rational reason to believe...sort of like being a Canucks fan). Sorry I can't give a more concrete answer, but there are more things I don't understand than I do when it comes to the workings of God. The Book of Revelations tells us that Jesus will return to earth at some point in time. I believe this to be true. But before this happens, there's a bunch of other prophecies that need to be fulfilled, and as a Christian, I see some of these prophecies coming to life. c) Why would a race of humans need "saving"? from what? Humans are born into sin (Book of Genesis). When Adam and Eve sinned, we inherited their sin and were born with sin. Humans need "saving" from sin, because sin is what creates the chasm between us and God. We were created in the likeness of God, and we are like lost sheep that the good shepherd (God) tries to corral back to his place of glory for those who want it. d) Afterlife? Save us from our afterlife? As a Christian, I believe there is heaven and hell. These are the two destinations I have at the end of my physical/earthly life and where I end up will be predicated by my acceptance of God/Jesus as my saviour and how I behave as a Christian. God's looking to bring all of us to heaven, so one of His objectives is to save us from eternal damnation (i.e., an afterlife in hell). e) When we die, do we "wakeup" from our VR game on another planet? Don't know, but I believe our spirit will end up in either heaven or hell, depending on our acceptance of God/Jesus and living a life on earth that honors that acceptance. f) Why would God send "down" a representative to interact with Humans? to teach? to inform? to heal? to save?...save from what?...the upcoming galactic war? why? Why then would be be required to die a human death only to be resurrected as a spiritual being? God sent himself in the form of Jesus. To interact, teach, inform, heal, save...all of the above. Save the human race from eternal damnation. Not sure about an upcoming galactic war. Has not been prophecized, though according to the book of Revelations, there will be an apocalyptic event on earth. Physical being/spirituality is part of our entire being. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust describes our physical being...our spirit is visible physically through the impact we make on other people's lives (e.g., the spirit of Terry Fox lives in all those who have endured cancer and overcome it in one form or another). Just want to leave everyone with one thought for Good Friday/Easter: those who perpetrated Jesus' crucifixion were Pharisees (the high priests of the Jewish church). Jesus offended and challenged these so-called "men of God" and heads of the church of the day, which led to His brutal killing. All of this was prophecized in the Old Testament, so it was ordained by God to happen. The brutality and hypocrisy of men (and women) who were given the privilege of leading the church (i.e., religion as an man-made institution) has been going on for a long, long time.

Lack of AHL Player Development - Skaters
bigbadcanucks replied to canucklehead44's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Thanks for clarifying, @filthycanuck. I get what you're saying...I think I was a little confused with your comment "A lot of people thought Jordan Subban was a shoe in to be in the bigs", which I don't think was the case. Wishful and hopeful, but I don't think many thought Subban due to his long list of deficiencies was going to be a regular NHL player (the lines between hope/expect/reality is really blurred here on CDC). Maybe some thought Frankie Corrado was a shoe-in (sorry, I digressed). Though I don't expect this to be the case, I'm hopeful that Quinn Hughes develops into a Phil Housley and Jack Rathbone develops into a Brian Leetch on the very high side of the scale or a Torey Krug on the middle part of the scale. Wouldn't that be something if that is what Hughes and Rathbone developed into? Surround them with a bunch of bruisers and the Canucks defence will be set for the next 10 years. One can fantasize. -
Boeser is slowly transforming into one of those over-priced/over-rated forwards. His numbers are no better than Garland's...max value for Boeser should be a $5.0M AAV for two seasons, but he'll probably be offered something in the $6M to $6.5M range. Overpayment.

Bet you're one of the guys whose feelings were hurt by Allvin's comments and doing cartwheels right now because Hughes is zeroing in on Lidster's single season record of 63 points and Kearns' single season record of 55 assists. In almost any other organization with a winning tradition, these numbers wouldn't even register as a footnote. Hughes, Miller and Demko are untouchables IMHO. But to proclaim Hughes and Miller, who are stars and having outstanding respective seasons, as superstars is simply inaccurate, wouldn't you say? I have no doubts Hughes will become a superstar in due time in the same way as a Brian Leetch was. Superstars in my book are players like Gretzky, Yzerman, Bossy, Lafleur, Orr, Crosby, Ovechkin, Jagr, Potvin, Leetch. You honestly think Miller and Hughes can be spoken about in the same way as these players at this point in their careers? But hey, if you want a lower set of standards, knock yourself out. And while you're at it, give yourself a participation ribbon. -
[PGT] Arizona Coyotes at Vancouver Canucks | Apr. 14, 2022
bigbadcanucks replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
How is this debatable? Pettersson is a career 0.9 PPG, with stretches of brilliance and stretches where he's been ineffective; Boeser is a career 0.8 PPG and hit the 100 goal mark in his fifth season as a pro (and he's been advertised as a superstar goal scorer to the Canucks faithful); Miller has matured into a PPG player in his 10th season as a pro; Horvat tops out as a second line centreman; OEL's best days are behind him; Garland is complementary top six player; Hughes is a star, with the potential to be a superstar. The only bonafide superstar or franchise player on the Canucks at this time is Thatcher Demko who, IMO, has earned this with his play. Pettersson is one of the top players under 25 and has the potential become a superstar, but at this point in time, he hasn't demonstrated superstar status consistently. Allvin comes from an organization that had Crosby (career 1.3PPG, including 500+ goals), Malkin (career 1.03PPG and soon to pass 500 goals), Fleury and Letang. These are legit superstars from early on in their careers and cup winners, so I think he's qualified to make these comparisons. I'm a diehard Canucks fan and as a Canucks fan, we've cheered on mediocrity over 50+ years. The Sedins gave us 5-6 seasons of superstar-like hockey; Naslund 3-4 seasons; Luongo 4-5 seasons. We've had lots of character guys come through who were deserving of love and adulation (Linden, Smyl, Burrows, Bieksa, Kesler to mention a few) but the number of "superstars" can be counted on one hand. The fact that we're cheering on Quinn Hughes to catch Dennis Kearns' longstanding single season assist record by a d-man is indication that the franchise has lacked superstar power through its history (and yes, I was around to see Kearns play). Sorry if Allvin's comment hurts some Canucks fans' feelings. He's speaking the truth. Back to PGT - this was a good win...great to see Podkolzin emerge over the past little while and see the intensity and purpose the Canucks are playing with right now. -
The Hughes Trinity [Discussion]
bigbadcanucks replied to LTC123's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This guy^^^^^wants to trade Hughes because Rathbone has lit up the AHL but has done squat in the NHL (yet)...wants to trade Demko because Martin was on fire over three NHL games and has done the same in the AHL. Gonna bet he's suffering from premature ejection (gotta keep it PG-13, so fill in the blanks). Maybe the Canucks should consider adding Jim Hughes and Ellen Weinberg-Hughes to their hockey ops team so that the Canucks can have the Hughes trifecta in another way. -
I dated a Ukrainian girl when I was in university back in the 1980s. She was hands down one of the nicest and most beautiful girls I've ever dated. I remember all the amazing Ukrainian dance recitals I went to to support her. And she ended up becoming an MD. We split up because I was offered a job that brought me to the west coast (from Winnipeg). She's actually the only one from the past that I wonder with a "what if?". Though I have to say, my life has turned out pretty damn good. Don't know what I did to fall into the good graces of the higher power, but I'm thankful for the charmed life that I've lived so far. God willing, I hope there's a lot of room left on the runway.

Lack of AHL Player Development - Skaters
bigbadcanucks replied to canucklehead44's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
You're comparing Jordan Subban to Jack Rathbone? Really? Subban's offensive numbers in the AHL is dwarfed by Rathbone, and Rathbone's defensive game is far more mature than Subban could ever hope for. Subban is a career long minus player (he's -22 in the ECHL for goodness sake...-21 in the DEL) The one thing I will concede about Rathbone is that he hasn't done much in the NHL. He's done great in the AHL (though it's a relatively small sample size). One thing for sure, Rathbone has earned the opportunity to show what he can do in the NHL. Something that could NEVER have been said about Subban. And no, no rational person is expecting Rathbone to replace Hughes anytime soon (that last comment is not directed towards you @filthycanuck). Additionally, Will Lockwood is asserting himself as a bonafide NHL player. I'll take Lockwood at ELC over Motte at the speculated $2M+ as a bottom six forward anytime. With the graduation of Demko, Lockwood to the NHL, and potential graduation of Rathbone and Martin, the development of players through the AHL is starting to look a little better. Maybe it's not so much about the "program", but has more to do with the quality of players coming through. If that's the case, that is on the people who are drafting the players/prospects. -

I had visions of Jannek Hansen's missed open net attempt from Game 2 of the 2012 first round playoff series when Schenn's long bomb missed and when Miller's shot on the open net hit the post. Good win for the Canucks over a bottom feeder. The Orca...the true apex predator of the ocean. Should also add that I loved Lockwood and Podkolzin's game. And Chiasson and Schenn too. And Demko with big saves and 30th win of the season. -
2021-22 Abbotsford Canucks Thread
bigbadcanucks replied to GoldenAlien's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Little investigative research: Alex Kannok Leipert was drafted by the Caps with the Canucks 2018 6th round pick (no. 161) that was sent to them for Caps 2018 6th round pick (no. 186) and 2019 6th round pick (no. 180). So, if AKL ends up lasting past this season for the Johnny Canucks, it's conceivable the Canucks will end up with three players for the price of one in the organization (if Artryom Manyukan, the Russian munchkin and Jack Malone are ever signed to an AHL/NHL contract). -
^^^^This guy maybe very well be the stupidest poster on CDC....trade Hughes because Rathbone is lighting up the AHL...trade Demko because Martin has three stellar games for the Canucks. Sounds like Benning has reinvented himself as a dumbass furry alien.

Hence, the word "also". The Kesler/Backes confrontation is/was well documented. Guess the speculative "joke" was lost in translation. And yes, most everyone is aware that Karlsson has expressed an interest in signing with the Canucks, and believe the signing is inevitable. But try to tell that to some here who fret at every prospect, be it US college/European/Canadian junior who isn't immediately signed.
-
Did Umberger also have a girlfriend/wife named Kelly that Kesler was cozying up to? You know, Kesler was known for those type of shenanigans. EDIT: Ah shoot...forgot this was the Linus Karlsson thread. Hope the Canucks can get the SHL rookie scoring sensation signed ASAP to an ELC before he becomes a UFA. Otherwise, old furball Alflives will have a twister and fall off his scooter.
