  1. Maybe I can add another perspective... Benning and Weisbrod would have probably panicked and signed Motte to a 3 year $3M AAV (like they did with Roussel and Beagle, and to some degree, Pearson at a higher AAV last spring). Allvin and Rutherford, to their credit, stayed cool and calm and got whatever the market allowed for a fourth line winger, which was a fourth round pick. The Richardson waiver claim won't even be a footnote to this season once it's over. This move tells me that Allvin and Rutherford are interested in ensuring Abbotsford has a decent run into the Calder Cup tourney. Richardson is a placeholder for the balance of this season and you'll probably forget that he played parts of the final 18 games of the 2021-22 season once the season is over. Motte is fast, disciplined and all the things JR/PA have talked about wanting their players to be, but there is a capped amount of money to spend on players like Motte, which is further exacerbated by the way Benning spent money like a drunken sailor. If Motte's agent and the team were far apart on a value for Motte, then I'm glad the current management let Motte go. At the very least, we know now that JR/PA won't be spending $3M AAV on fourth line forwards. Hindsight is 20/20, and now that we've watched another failed season come and go (in 18 games), wouldn't it be great to see Loui E r i k s s o n's $6M, Roussel's $3M and Beagle's $3M come off the books rather than having OEL $7.25M albatross hanging over the team? Even for this season, I would have much rather had Edler at $3.5M cap hit than OEL for $7.25M. But that's the parting gift Benning left all of us, and I bring this up because this is another example of Benning's short-sightedness and lack of vision for the franchise. I might be delusional, but I believe the current management is much more prudent with asset management and handling of cap, and have a vision of where they want the team to be, whereas Benning and his group of drunken sailors (that being him and Weisbrod) did not.
  2. It's not where you starts that counts...it's where you end up. And though I agree Benning didn't start with much and was handicapped with giving the Sedins a couple of more tries even though the team was a heaping pile of nothing has left Allvin with some decent pieces to work with (i.e., Demko, Hughes and Miller), he couldn't get the team out of first gear during his entire tenure. Gillis, as much as he was given, was able to take the team to two Presidents Cups (not that that is worth much) and one game away from the Cup. We'll see where Allvin takes the Canucks. Hopefully it will be somewhere magical before I have to convert my RRSPs and LIRAs to RIFs and start collecting OAS cheques from the government and before my three months old son starts middle school.
  3. For all those pi$$in' and moaning about the Tyler Motte trade, what would you rather have? Motte either gone for nothing or 2 years at $2.5M (which is quite possibly what his agent was angling for) or the potential of Karlsson at ELC of $925K? It's a not brainer. And if I'm Bruce Boudreau, I'm sending a complete video compilation of Motte's play over the past 3 seasons home with Hoglander and telling him to study every second of it and come back in the fall as the guy to replace Motte. Can you imagine Hoglander being the offensively creative player he is already coupled with new found defensive prowess and awareness on the third/fourth line? That would significantly up Hoglander's value and move the collective needle in the right direction.
  4. Yah, because Pettersson and OEL are the type of athletes that'll go back home and have a Kyle Wellwood or Jake Virtanen type of off-season. Give it a rest.
  5. Seeing how playoff hopes are all but dashed, if OEL has any inkling of an injury, I'd say, shut him down for the season. Put Dermott in to take OEL's cap space and use Dermott's cap space to pay Halak's bonus. Remove any stress on next season's cap you can. That's if, if that sort of cap gymnastics is allowed.
  6. Not here. I just want to keep beating on the dead horse Loui E r i k s s o n. And Radim Vrbata. And now, Jaroslav Halak.
  7. Klimovie will at least will always have a clean sheet of ice playing alongside Pettersson.
  8. It's not Jesus has bigger things to attend to than NHL hockey...Hockey Jesus on the other hand would say play to the best of your ability and don't cheat anyone from an honest effort. He would also say try to win the day. Every day. We also know that the Hockey Gods hate the Canucks, so Hockey Jesus wouldn't give a rats @$$ whether the team tanked or not. Given how the Canucks have played the last three games, which may have arguably been the most important games of the season, it LOOKS like they've given up and are tanking. Keep giving this same type of effort, and the team will play itself into irrelevance.
  9. Motte for a fourth rd pick when a deal couldn't get done to sign him is fine by me. Hamonic, a player who is in/out of the lineup and carries a $3M price tag being moved out is fine by me. Dermott, a young, durable, reclamation-type player, plays both sides on defence, and carries a $1.5M cap hit for 2022-23 in is fine by me. Clearing a net $2.725M cap hit for this season (I don't know if they can actually use this to monetize bonus payment due to Halak or not - maybe a capologist here on CDC can answer this question) and a net $1.5M for next season is a win. Not moving out dead wood is a big loss. Like Jannik Hansen says, there needs to be a move higher up the food chain to reshape the team. I suppose today wasn't the day that was going to happen. Looking like something is going to happen to reform the culture of this team in the summer. Coming out flat in the first period more times than not can't be sitting well with the brass. That's on the players' leadership group, and they just haven't been good enough all season long. If Demko hadn't been world class during the early stages of Boudreau's tenure, this team would have the same win pct. as they did under Travis Green. The team as it is right now is just not very good, and JR/PA did little to change that today. For that reason, I gave a five.
  10. Boeser doesn't hit. He's too busy getting hit. At least Pettersson throws his body around when he can (too bad he ends up on the ice whether he's giving or receiving a hit, though).
  11. I liked Richardson on his last go-around with the Canucks. Felt really bad for him when Tryamkin crushed him like a tin can. Hope he gets in a few games, but he'll probably end up blocking a shot and breaking his foot (like he did when he first joined the Canucks) on his first shift of the first game he plays.
  12. Love it that the Honey Badger has become the voice of reason among the media.
  13. The team as it is right now is nothing more than a bunch of pretenders. The Bruce factor was carrying some cachet, but the players on this team has essentially shown its true identity over the past three games. And that's a .500 team that shows up half the time and gets its @$$ saved by Demko's goaltending (and if Demko isn't standing on his head, the team is sunk). Losing Motte for a fourth round pick is nothing more than a footnote to the season. Motte at anything less than $1.75M AAV is an asset; Motte at anything more than $1.75M is a liability. If the reports that they couldn't come to an agreement are true, I'm glad they moved Motte for a fourth. Highmore, Lockwood, and possibly Jasek and/or Karlsson, and quite possibly Hoglander (if he can re-invent himself) have made Motte at cap hit above $1.75M redundant. As much as it might hurt short term (i.e., I'm a Motte fan and like his heart, skill and tenacity), this is the right move. Same goes for the Dermott in and Hamonic out moves. Saving $1.5M cap hit, getting younger, gaining cost control, getting a more durable player, and potential for a fit that works for the Canucks vs. a player in/out of the lineup and older is a no-brainer. As whole milk-like as these moves have been, IMHO, they position the team more favorably. I'm just a little disappointed that the Canucks couldn't unload more passengers.
  14. Patick Allvin...meet the new boss. Same as the old boss. Guess the calls made by Rutherford and Allvin to gauge the value of the Canucks players was somewhat underwhelming (or Canucks players are unwanted...don't blame anyone for low-balling Canucks' assets after seeing the p!$$ poor effort they have shown over the past three games where their playoff lives were on the line). Pathetic. Back. To. Irrelevance.
  15. I'd take Erik Gudbrandson as my third pairing RHD at $1.95M cap hit any day of the week. Schenn as the third pairing RHD at $850K is just as good, if not better.
  16. Here's the context of the trade that I will take away and look back on when the hindsight analysis begins in a year or two: 1-fits age profile JR/PA are looking for. 2-traded on the same day Hamonic, an older player, was sent out. Out: $3.0M cap hit for 2021-22 and 2022-2023; In: $1.5M cap hit for 2021-22 and 2022-23; net cap gain of $1.5M. Cap savings at this time is very valuable for the Canucks. 3-LHD, with one more year left on contract and RFA at its expiry. Could very well allow Rathbone one more full season of development in the AHL before he's ready to make the jump to the NHL. So Dermott may quite possibly be a placeholder for Rathbone, and a tradeable asset at 2023 trade deadline. 4-gives the team depth on the left side of the defence. With Schenn, Juulsen (as long as he re-signs by July 2022), and Burroughs, this adds some balance to the backend on the third pairing. At the very least, he'll be able to send Hunt packing to Abby for the rest of this season. 5-could very well turn out to be one of those players who works out for the Canucks (i.e., "a good fit"). Allvin is said to be a pro scout extraordinaire, so we'll see what sort of chops he's got with this deal. Not a bruiser, but at least Dermott tips the scales at 205 pounds. If I'm not mistaken, nos. 24, 26, 27, 28, 29 are available (though 28 is unofficially retired). I hope they don't give him Rathbone's no. 3. I would like to see Dermott take no. 32 (reverse of 23 that he's worn in Toronto).
  17. Real shame that a "bounce-back" is to be expected at this stage of the season. Hate to say this about our beloved Cancks...the last two games have essentially sealed the hopes for a playoff berth. Best thing now is for JR/PA to start thinking about the next two to three seasons and acting on how best to position the team for success for seasons to come. I can't see how it is acceptable to JR/PA/SS/FA/et. al. to see the opposing teams come in and slap the Canucks around like they do so often in the first period. Rogers Arena is probably the easiest rink for opposing teams to play in thanks to the buttery soft team that the Canucks are. I'm expecting the Sabres to come in and impose their will on the Canucks early on. With the effort they showed last night in what was arguably the most important game of the season last night, why would anyone expect a different effort tonight? Time to take this version of the Canucks and take it to the back of the barn for the season. I hope Halak starts tonight. I'd rather see the inevitable begin now than later.
  18. Looking every bit like Klimovie.
  19. Arguably the biggest game of the season and Canucks happily spot a 2-0 lead in the first. Pathetic. Let the sell off begin.
  20. Note the word "tonight". Bruce, if he hasn't already (which is most likely the case), planting the seed with Horvat what he expects from him every night...not just tonight. We all talk about Bubble Demko...us Canucks fans need Bubble Bo to do what he did tonight and during the bubble for the stretch drive.
  21. Spencer: For Hire. A tv reference for all the old timers like me out there...never mind the spelling difference from the show from the 80s vs. Spencer Martin.
  22. That's funny...Canucks usually score when I leave the room. Or when my wife enters the room. When I was a season ticket member, they used always score when I left my seat. Then, it became that they would only win if I didn't go to the games...so in the interest of Canucks fans everywhere, my wife (who was my girlfriend at the time) would go to all the games with her friends. The sacrifices I made for all my fellow Canucks fans.
  23. Should never let facts muddle up any conversation...it's only opinions that matter, right? (Was having a consultation with an ER doctor last night on behalf of my two months old son who my wife and I took to the hospital because of what looked like respiratory problems, and really, all he was giving me was his best medical opinion...sort of like what my lawyer does when it comes to giving me his legal opinion on laws that are entirely open to interpretation and a judge's decision...sort of like what my accountant does when it comes to giving me his opinion on how far we can push the amount that can be claimed for depreciating assets).
  24. Giroux's 900+ draws taken with a win pct. of 61% so far this season says otherwise.
