  1. I think the one big area where we may have problems next year that gets overlooked is our PK. Both Tanev and Marky were big parts of that and Schmidt, as much of an upgrade over CT as that is, in my opinion doesn’t fill that hole. If someone else can then great, and with some of our killers like Motte and Beages I don’t know that it’s a big hole, but I have my concerns.
  2. Only one rookie in per night I think is manageable. Especially as I feel all have shown an ability to keep up in small showings. but on top of that, I personally feel we over achieved last season, and am expecting a small regression this year. Our best years with this current team are still ahead, so I’m just planning on enjoying the ride for now. Once we have the big two signed after next season and we can plan better how to surround our core I’ll raise my expectations. Until then all success above a playoff spot is a bonus...
  3. I still think he should be our 7th defender. This season should be cultivating our young defenders who have shown signs of being ready for the show. Benn should be expecting to play both side on the bottom pairing, Right side for a while with Juolevi, Left side with Rafferty, then back to the Right side with Brisebois. Give all the kids a chance to play and show what they’ve got. I’d like to see: Hughes - Myers Edler - Schmidt Juolevi - Benn Brisebois, Rafferty
  4. I see Juolevi taking that 3rd line left side, hoping that Brisebois gets that number 7 role. I could see Levi, Breezer, and Rafferty cycling out that 3rd line with Benn moving back and forth between Left and Right depending on which rookie he’s lining up with. Rathbone will start in the AHL getting top minutes.
  5. In my opinion, Leivo isn’t going to be the player he was before his injury. Was the right time to move on.
  6. Don’t get me wrong, I was more referring to the action movie stars cashing in on their names. But I absolutely agree, I think that line could have flashes of their former selves where they dominate opposing bottom six lines and the rest of the time they’ll be competent players that will have trouble with some younger and faster lines. Although I disagree with them leaving cash on the table to come to Toronto. I don’t think there were any other significant offers from any other teams. also, yes I too think they will have a positive impact in the locker room and on the ice beyond stats.
  7. While I don’t have a dog in this fight (couldn’t recall even watching Nordstrom play to be honest), I have to say that using other users on this board as evidence to support your opinion isn’t a great tactic. If everyone on this board said that Erickson was earning his pay check, wouldn’t mean he was. im not saying you’re wrong or right in your assessment (again, I’ve no idea), just not a fan of your argument.
  8. Could you imagine a bottom line of Spezza - Thornton - Perry?? That’d be the “Expendables” line, past-their-prime pros looking to cash it, the ultimate name-drop line!! hahahahahaha
  9. I think what’s going to happen is we’re going to see a bounce back from Holtby from where he’s dropped off, but not back to what he was. He will be a decent 1b for Demko, and post average starter numbers in roughly half the starts this year...
  10. I agree, I think he may be redundant if he can’t alter his game a bit. Not that he’s a bad player or that it’s a bad signing. I just think that he isn’t going to supplant Petey or Bo, then he either needs to learn the d side of center, shift to LW, or get moved for someone else. I wish him the best no matter the outcome, love having this guy in our lineup.
  11. Really it’s just a sign of being in a different part of the rebuild. young players excelled, thus making our overpaid contracts bad that much quicker. With Sutter, we were bringing in our temp 2nd line Center. Petey wasn’t supposed to jump to the top of our lineup so quickly and dominate. Sutter was just a place holder who was going to be in the last couple years of his contract when Petey was supposed to take over, and Sutters contract was supposed to be off the books by the time Petey was due a truly big raise. Same with the others (Beagle, Roussel, etc). really it’s more a testament to Benning drafting and development that our kids overshot our timeline and put us in this cap crunch.
  12. The issue too is that you can only have so many star players on your team. Trying to pay Laine, Pettersson, and Hughes will undoubtedly weaken us everywhere else. You can’t just play 1 line all the time. Look at Toronto the past few years. We’re better off with Boeser, Podz, and whatever else it would cost us to snipe Laine from Winnipeg. We’re better off paying our two superstars and surrounding them with slightly cheaper contracts that are stil great players.
  13. This. So much this. Jake was always toted as a Power Forward, but I’m not sure he’s developing as such. He has the skills to be a solid two-way forward, give him a chance to play the penalty kill and develop in that role. His speed with the combination that dumping pucks is the goal will keep opposing defenders honest.
  14. You sign him as a third line guy who can move up when needed. If he shows up ready for camp or you aren’t able to sign anyone better, give him a top 6 role. given that he was on pace for 20 goals last year playing 3/4 the year on the 3rd or 4th line, if he has the entire year on the top two lines there’s no reason to think he couldn’t hit 25+...
  15. The interesting part is that people are saying that the Canucks had the knights over a barrel so they should have gotten more, when the truth is that it was reported that the deal was already in place prior to Pietrangelo signing. The knights were under the cap at the time, it was our handshake deal that gave them the confidence to sign Pietrangelo, knowing that they WOULD get the cap space. If we tried to put the irons to Vegas for more, they just turn around and not sign Pietrangelo.
  16. Petey Bo Sutter Beagle this is a good line up at Center for this year. personally (and I’m sure I’ll get roasted for this) I’d use Gaudette to try and move Rooster this year. Free up some Cap and sign Leivo to play second or third line LW with Pearson taking the other spot. If Hogz looks ready at Training camp maybe even move Pearson for a prospect at Center for the pipeline. Just my thoughts...
  17. He was their numb 2, became their numb 3 when Pietrangelo was signed, then became our numb 2. Pretty simple really...
  18. No, they wait until after we let them go to UFA apparently.
  19. It’s not about fun, it’s about long term sustainability. Sure we may take a step back this year, similar to Colorado did after their first taste of playoffs with the McKinnon era, but to go crazy with UFAs this year would have been a mistake. We are ahead of schedule in the rebuild, patience is king. Take the next year to see what our kids can do while running out the clock on some more contracts. Then re-sign Hughes/Pettersson/Demko, see what you have left cap wise, then make a hit signing. We are still in the very beginning of our “window”, arguably before it should have even opened.
  20. Now is the time to add him. We need his 1st overall luck for next draft to get Quinn’s brother in the 2021 draft...
  21. One thing to keep in mind is that Players on Canadian teams are paid in USD but pay taxes in CND. Supposedly this balances out things more then people realize. I can’t remember where the article I read was so, take it with a grain of salt...
  22. I’ve said it before, the only people overrating Jake are those who still think he should be a 35+ goal phenom because of his draft rating. He has proven to be a solid (not elite) 3rd liner who can move up and down the roster, pot 15 to 20 goals, draws penalties better then almost anyone on the team, is defensive adequate (not great), can throw the occasional hit, is better at taking away pucks then giving away pucks, and can cause opposing defensemen fits on the forecheck. If he had have been drafted early third round he would be loved by everyone. He is a good option for the third line due to his versatility, and worth the 2.5 to 3 million in my opinion. Maybe not much more, but there would be many more overpaid players then Jake at that cost.
