[Signing] Tyler Myers to Vancouver
GreyHatnDart replied to Rush17's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I’m just waiting on this signing to be official so I can see Canucks twitterverse collectively explode. -
That’s a bit of a different thing. Brady runs the show in NE. You could make that comparison if you cited Tavares or Matthews taking a pay cut to “lead the team” in that aspect, both of whom did not. I have nothing against either Kapanen or Johnsson, and both are good contract signings but that comparison doesn’t really fit here imo. End of the day, it’s the Nylander fiasco coupled with the Tavares signing that’s now led the Leafs to shoot themselves in the foot, which a lot of people said right from the start.

Jim Benning: June 27th, 2019 (Recapture penality/free agency)

Man that guy had Semin all over him. ...I’ll show myself out. -

How would that work though? An additional ~3m added to our cap? Wouldn’t ever happen. Regardless, it’s a joke, but the people somehow pissed off at Luongo for this are being pretty silly. Be mad at the league, or even the Panthers for pushing Luongo to retire, but he’s not really to blame for this. As Canucks fans, should we really be surprised? -

Same, anyone have recaps or is it on YouTube? -
I see what you’re driving at and yes I suppose it’s more concerning than if we’d signed him now but there’s nothing wrong with giving him another year with the C and him getting his degree. As someone else posted, his public plan still sounds like Vancouver so I’ll wait and see how it shakes out. Unfortunately that’s the risk you take drafting players with plans to go to university. Personally, I hate it as there’s literally no protection. Imo if a team “steals” your player, they should have to pay a penalty of an equivalent pick. It’s interesting that offer sheeting players in RFA’s is considered bad form, but scooping college players from another team doesn’t seem to be a big deal. It does however seem to be a stigma for the players themselves, but they’re exercising their right to the rules in place.

There’s obviously a chance he could sign elsewhere, but also agreed, there’s no indication he doesn’t want to play here. OP sounding like a Chicken Little.

Alexander Edler nominated for King Clancy Memorial Trophy
GreyHatnDart replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Benning didn’t sign the Sedins. I agree that a 2 year deal would be optimal assuming Edler goes for that. We have the space to overpay him and set him up to retire if he so chose at the end of it, rather than giving him term. Edler is debatably the best LHD going to FA and wants to be here. Chances are the Canucks will still need to overpay to get players here as well as needing to overpay anyways for tax purposes. Resigning him, and assuming Juolevi is ready to make the jump after what I figure will be an AHL start next season, hopefully that’ll mean we can move Hutton for something. Depth takes time to build for sure but it’ll sure be nice to finally have extra assets to be able to trade to fill needs. -
JB: I’ll make the phone call about the 1st overall pick
GreyHatnDart replied to Generational.EP40's topic in Canucks Talk
Of our “big 4” the only one I’d consider making this move for would be Boeser. Imo he’s the most easily replaceable behind Petey, Bo and Hughes. There’s not a lot of 24 year old centreman that can do what Bo does, and he’s still getting better. He’s a huge catalyst for our team and I believe trading him AND a package for J Hughes would be a huge mistake. As for trading Boeser, I’m not on board with that either, just wanted to make a point of where I’m at as far as those top 4 players go. Personally, we keep the 10th, and draft the BPA in the position we most need, which is a projected Top 4 RHD, or a Top 6 LW. -
If the right trade was in place, I’m not opposed to moving just about anyone on the team, save the core. Problem with goaltenders is they’re notoriously not worth a lot in trade... there’s only about 5 tenders in the league that consistently put up great numbers, so I think on the market they typically fetch less than skaters. Personally though, assuming Markstrom plays as well as he has this year, gives us the best chance next season to get into playoff contention. Between him and Demko would certainly put us up into the higher tier of goaltender tandems in the league I would think. I also don’t think Demko is anywhere near ready to be a starter, so if we traded Markstrom we’d be likely looking to FA for a starter, and be worse off than we are currently.

[GDT] Nucks @ Blues -- 1PM -- 06/04/19 -- A New New Hope
GreyHatnDart replied to xereau's topic in Canucks Talk
Pettersson has a 20 point edge on 2nd, who’s Tkachuk. I think Dahlin made a splash as well towards the Calder. So if it does come down to him against Binnington, scoring a goal against him will go a long way to securing the trophy for him. 4-3 St Louis tonight, with Petey notching a hat trick would make my night. -
Is Markstrom now the Elite Goalie he was always projected to be?
GreyHatnDart replied to *Buzzsaw*'s topic in Canucks Talk
Assumedly a poor defensive team is going to give up more shots and scoring chances than a strong offensive team. Assumedly a more offensive team is going to give a greater cushion and therefore a larger margin of error for a goaltender. I’d wager that if you looked back through some of hockey’s greatest goalies, the majority of them played for really great teams. -

You could argue that by being on a better team, he’d be an excellent starter. -
As a 'Nucks-Backer, What Burns Your Bacon?
GreyHatnDart replied to Nuxfanabroad's topic in Canucks Talk
Agreed and it’s funny cuz I was starting to think his shtick was getting a little tired but having experienced the tripe the last however long it’s been since the merger, I’d take his “hey Gary, your shoe’s untied” joke every single day without complaint. -

I truly miss having more Canucks orientated coverage. I cannot stand having the Leafs, Blue Jays and Raptors shoved down my throat constantly while our boys get 2 minutes of air time after a big win. -
Secondary scoring; swing and a miss; PK and grit and would back any teammate any time; plays hard minutes, good in the dot, and good PKer; a poor fit, as evidenced so far in his time with Pittsburgh. Are all of these players integral to a cup team? No. For a team transitioning as we are though, these guys are/were for depth, and filling roles. I’m not really sure what you see when you look around the league at what players play bottom 6 roles and minutes, and what kind of players you want there. You going to put Matthews out on the PK? Jeff Skinner in a shutdown role? Of course not. You need niche/role players just as much as top scorers. We have more of the former, of course, because our young core is still developing. Jay Beagle has a cup ring, and plays on our 4th line... do you think he didn’t play his role in Washington and was beneficiary for them there just because he wasn’t scoring?

Average in what context? Baer has had a significantly better career than the average 2nd round draft pick. Hell even Vey with 138 career games is significantly better than the average. Perhaps there was another Gaudette but Gauds is a far cry from having a more successful NHL career than Baer has had, and Woo hasn’t played pro on any level yet. They’re both trending well to be sure, I really like both players and hope they excel. But to try and say that trading that 2nd for Baer on a 25% of getting an NHL capable player, on top of likely 2-4 years of development to even get there, was a bad trade I don’t know what to say.
-
I didn’t say I did either, old or young I could care less about that with a player as far as if they’re effective on the ice or not. Contractually, until recently, younger guys generally were on cheaper deals after their ELC’s so there’s that to consider. I agree though, at that point I believe the mandate was simply trying to jumpstart the roster than overhaul it.
-
I never said it was a success or anything even close to making that statement. I was simply pointing out that people accuse Benning constantly of trading away all his picks but don’t mention retaining picks back in other trades. Detroit is in a very different situation than we were the first couple of years when Benning was moving more picks. The mandate at that point was trying to make the playoffs, not rebuild.
-
We could also have any of the hundreds and hundreds of guys that never amount to anything. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, and trades like Vey for a 2nd clearly didn’t work out. Remember, there was also a huge age gap missing from our team when Benning came in, and the trades for Vey and Baertschi were attempts to fill that gap. Also remember, the aim of the franchise at that point was very different than it is now, as far as “re-tooling on the fly” to now rebuilding. Nothing of any real consequence was going to change until the Sedins retired imo.

I listed the net losses and additions of picks. Yes he traded 2nds, but also gained picks back, and is at a net loss of 2 picks during his tenure. Of course it would’ve been nice to have acquired extras in the first 3 rounds but people act as if this is easy to do and as if we had plenty of expendable assets to do so. Which players were we had been able to move for these picks you’re wishing to acquire? He’s acquired plenty of picks as well as trading them, it’s all listed here: http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_team/Vancouver_Canucks/1

I keep reading this kind of thing so I went and looked at the drafts since 2014. He’s down 2 2nd rounders and 4 4ths. He’s up a 1st, a 2nd, a 5th and a 7th. By my math he’s down 2 picks out of 35 over 5 years. As far as your point about trading away picks from the first 3 rounds, he’s down 1 2nd but acquired a 1st... if anything he’s improved the first 3 rounds of drafting during his tenure.
