  1. @HC_Men Virtanen on the 4th line with Crouse and Gauthier. That's definitely a heavy line lol. Obviously the offensive production everyone above is glorifying doesn't translate into a top 2 line RW spot... hmmmm
  2. The logical way of thinking, in normal hockey terms, is to play the best player. I agree with you there, Mackinnon, Drouin were held back on a leash and so was McDavid. But our normal way of analyzing hockey, which is at the Juniors level, AHL level and NHL level need not apply to the WJC. It's almost like football playoffs where winner takes all. The world juniors is a sprint where as the Memorial Cup run, Calder Cup run and Stanley Cup run are marathons. They are completely different and they are therefor approach differently. If you guys have ever played hockey you can relate to this. When you go away for tournaments you play a different kind of game as opposed to your season. I might be overanalyzing things or being overly critical in some peoples eyes but I'm really not. I just want to express that although Virtanen is going to be a player worth watching in the tournament, I don't think he'll be counted on to be deployed for key tactical situations because of his decision making and THAT'S OK.
  3. 6 points in 6 periods against the CIS all-stars, it really isn't a big feat. Offence is good and all but in key situations in a tournament with little to no room for error, he might not get deployed for those situations is what I'm saying. His decision making with the puck could be costly. All i'm saying is that he's a high risk high reward player and in a tournament where risk can be an issue, he might not see the ice in key moments in 3rd periods.
  4. You just love your sarcasm eh DeNiro? He is obviously adjusting to the new system/coaches but so are the other 29 other players. It just seems like he wasn't playing inside to confines of the system much, that's all. Maybe playing outside the system gets him to score and create more offence but it can be detrimental to a team, especially in a tournament like the WJC where one play can cost you. Also, don't tell me throwing cross ice passes on your backhand to the point from the corner is a product of adjusting to new systems.. You are taught from day 1 in hockey school not to do that.
  5. I know alot of people wanted us to draft this guy, but in the end it doesn't really matter. It's less likely his game translate to the NHL, he doesn't fit Bennings mold, and we're very deep in center prospects. Trayamkin, if he pans out will be a better pick in the long run. I hope to see Virtanen play with Ritchie again!
  6. He's almost a sure thing because he's putting up points, but his decision making at times has been a little shaky. Against tougher competition he can't make the plays he was trying out there, the ill-advised cross-ice passes, holding onto the puck too long on the PP, trying a saucer pass in the neutral zone instead of dumping it in. So although he's a lock on the team, his role on the team may be up in the air depending on whether he can be more reliable with the puck. Don't get me wrong, he made a great play on his first goal, but overall his game lacked good decision making.
  7. Classic Virtanen Goal. Speed down the right size, goes around the next, fakes wraparound and then shoots short side as he comes around. EDIT: Virtanen another goal on the powerplay from an amazing play from Point. Is Point ever making a case for himself in these 2 games so far... A dynamic player to say the least.
  8. http://portal.stretchinternet.com/oua/full.htm?eventId=189470 I started watching the 2nd half of the 1st period and I wasn't all that impressed with Virtanen's play; I didn't see his assist on the powerplay. He made some risky cross ice passes in the offensive zone when he probably should have circled it back to his teammates in the corner. His speed is noticeable but he hasn't been making great plays with the puck (2nd half only).
  9. Is JV playing in the exhibition game tonight? Is anyone watching the game between Canada vs. CIS Toronto Selects? If so.. links?
  10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJasa5u6yOA#t=190 You don't need a booming shot if you're as offensively gifted as drouin
  11. I believe drouin played the point last year on the 1st PP unit
  12. Didn't they come back down the other way and score the game winner?
  13. You can make yourself a youtube Channel and get partnered with the effort you're putting in.
  14. Completely agree, he complements Horvat a great deal but I still think a 3rd round pick for Dorsett is a pretty steep price to pay.
  15. I'm suprised he didn't turn pro this season. I agree with above that he should turn pro as soon as possible. Perhaps after this college season is done that he join Utica for a stint.
  16. I'd like to think that we have a Mike Richards/Jeff Carter type situation here with Horvat and Virtanen. OMG im excited for the future.
  17. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivn2LDJn4OM Kid is finding his game. Great 1 on 1 move and shows great speed and strength with the finish. Very encouraging going into the WJC camp.
  18. As much as I want him to represent Canada at the WJC, he's better suited here. I wasn't convinced 2 weeks ago but he really looks like he's getting comfortable. Being thrown into that pressure cooker of a tournament and being relied on that heavily won't help him in the short term in my opinion; especially when he returns to Vancouver. The positive of him going to the tournament would be the experience to play in a high pressure situation being Canadian and the tournament being played in Toronto and Montreal. Then again he has played in 2 memorial cups. I'm almost to the point where I'm indifferent as to what JB/TL have in store for the guy.
  19. He's been using his teammates a little better this year which is very encouraging. Still, I wish he was better away from the puck. Stick in the air alot, and doesn't look engaged in the play unless he has the puck.
  20. With his offence drying up as of late, I think his fight could really really light a fire under him. I don't think he fought alot in Junior, he had a very quiet demeanour to him, and maybe playing with this new edge will ignite a new BG.
  21. It was just one game, so dissecting his play is a little pointless, it doesn't justify his overall game. His knock was his hockey IQ, and as it seems as though he's working to use his teammates better, there seems to be a limit to his playmaking ability. He's going to be a shooter in the NHL not a passer and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It doesn't seem like the first time this year that Jake has gone pointless in a blowout win. He's had alot of multi point games but has also been held scoreless alot, so lack of consistency; it might be a product of him trying to do too much. He's now played 16 games + the super series I think he's past the point where we can give him a write off when it comes to lacklustre performances. I'm really expecting a strong WJC and second half and anything less i'll be disappointed because he has all the tools. p.s. I really hope he gets traded to a contender
  22. Hope not, Prescott's kind of a dump. I hate playing in that barn.
  23. He also had 5 points in 5 games on a conditioning stint in the AHL before going back to Junior this year.
  24. Hopefuly he can bust out of this scoring drought he's on. The Comets struggling on offence as of late and it would really be good for the team (and their Calder Cup Chances) if both Gaunce and Shinkaruk could start getting hot towards a playoff run. Everyone knows that a player that dominates the AHL and then also the playoffs is going to be a great NHL player (The Getzlaf/Perry & Carter/Richards deal).
  25. Virtanen has yet to score with that wicked snapshot or slapshot this season, he is definitely due. He also missed a couple breakaways and a penalty shot earlier in the season so his goal total could be alot higher, no panic here. I'm dying to see a laser go in.
