  1. Well, Dickinson was moved to wing on a top 3 line where he is playing more of a power forward role and has looked decent there. He is terrible with the puck but can shoot a bit think of him as a left handed Sutter. Can provide some physicality and create space just needs to keep it simple in o-zone. Pearson gets a lot of heat but he is one of the only forwards that is mixing it up in front of the net. Doesn’t always show on the stat sheet but we need more of that then less. He’s a shooter and plays a decent two way game. Not bad for a middle 6 winger, they can’t all be Podkolzin.
  2. Christmas is coming but I feel like I am already getting everything I asked for. wanted a house cleaning and experienced POHO. Check. Wanted new coach and general preference was Bruce Boudreau. Check. Wanted the breakout fixed, was tired of forwards receiving pass standing still or hooking back. Now they are in full stride actually trying to gain the zone so….Check. Wanted Podz to develop into the power forward that Pettey needs. If anyone looks like the yoke has been taken off of him it is Podz. He looks so good under BB and is starting to make me think he is going to be our best forward at some point. So..Check. Still a big climb up. Basically need to win 2 out of every 3 from here out. Night and day as far as style of play. It really deserves mention again that they were able to beat a big, very good Jets team with the D we iced last night. Boys deserved a lot of credit for that win. I officially would like to start the campaign for Lexie Shaw for ebug. If we lose our goalies in a game who better to come in than another Demko.
  3. If you exist in a world without history that is viable. But when every person hired at every level for decades looks the same then you have severely limited the talent pool you are drawing from. I would prefer to look at a much expanded talent pool for a good candidate since we now have an experienced team builder to help shepherd someone with talent. In a system where every candidate looks the same you sometimes have to intentionally broaden the net a bit to find someone exceptional.
  4. What I wanted from the team was to tear down the structure, hire an experienced POHO and rebuild the organization from ground up. Not sure Rutherford is who I would have chosen but he sure seems to have trained a lot of the GMs around the league and knows what Hockey Ops should look like. Can't quibble about the details I guess. Got the coach I favoured so this feels like an overall success and will be very interested to see who else comes in. Still would love to see some diversity but when you are looking for experience in hockey there isn't any.
  5. Obviously Pens were in a different situation when he was running them. He traded away a lot of high pics though again, pushing to win cups not pushing to be respectable. He did a great job of finding talent elsewhere with college FAs etc. Will support as is my team, not my first choice though. Definitely be a good resource for restructuring the hockey ops.
  6. Well we know we will be active in trade market. I like that is experienced winner but not the choice I would have made. Hope they do add a good GM as well. Would really love to see some diversity added to leadership group. NHL exec offices really need some diversity of opinion.
  7. Man that was cathartic. Something broke on this squad last year and Bruce seems like the perfect guy to help heal whatever went wrong. He is hockey lifer that still has so much love and energy for the game, he is positive and fun most of the time, he was an offensive player and pushes his team that way. The players want to play for him and play hard. Love some of the little adjustments like using Dickinson as a power forward on a more offensive line instead of straight shutdown guy. The progression of Podz is incredible and suddenly he is being used as a top forward. Great to see these guys looking like they care again.
  8. And EP went back home for a year. the fact that so many players jumped straight in was as much a mark of our desperation as a team. I think it is reasonable to say that Benning did better than Gillis in draft and possibly development. But also fair to say that the best development mostly seems to have come outside of the Canuck’s system in college, SHL etc. Gillis set the drafting/development bar really low though. ‘Benning was better at drafting but he spent so much time fighting his strengths by trading away picks so frequently.
  9. They are both serious hockey nerds. Hopefully they get along well as a lot of experience between them.
  10. Just hope there is no truth to Bergevin rumour. Seems like lateral move at best.
  11. Looking forward to some positivity and a chance to look ahead with a new vision. that being said the problems aren’t fixed, they likely will lose a lot for the foreseeable future.
  12. I think the management crew announced is just saying the lights are on and we are still running a business. They are working through the process and will hire a GM and maybe POHO. There is an interim tag there unlike BB who got a two year deal which is about as short as a coach can get.
  13. What I want to see is ownership take the time to properly structure the organization and hire good qualified people, and would really like to see some diversity in hiring. Is there not a woman qualified for AGM or GM with experienced POHO? Would like to see the breakout fixed in a way that utilizes what we have, a left side D that can fly. No more forwards receiving the puck standing still or hooking back but actually moving forward. Would like to see the team tweaked in a way that adds some size to create room for our smaller skilled players. Podz is a step in right direction but need what Jake was supposed to bring as well. Some NHL centres, by my count we have 1, along with 3 converted wingers and Lammiko a centre but borderline NHL.
  14. Trading Miller leaves us with one NHL centre (I still think Pettey should be on wing). Would still do it for really good D prospect like that but this season would get even worse.
  15. He was one of the hockey players in the movie as well I believe.
  16. When Benning took over the team they were a mess because they went all in in the Sedins. They had a bunch of NTC on vets, zero on the farm and a team no longer competitive. There was a reason though, we had a cup contender and Gillis put everything he could to get over the line. Bad drafting and bad deals ultimately killed that team. What Benning leaves behind is better than what he was left. The teams salary cap is a mess but not as big a mess and has more traceable assets and a couple of nice young pieces to build around. Prospects are surprisingly thin for a team run 8 years by a supposed draft guru but is better than when he got it. Problem is he never had any success on the ice and has been getting worse. He took a tough job, had no success but ultimately leaves us in a better place than we were. That being said, I think a average GM would have had either more success along the way or left us in a better situation.
  17. I like choice, don’t like the method. I think should be announcing new leadership group and structure as well as coaching group.
  18. I like Bruce Boudreau. Hear him on Radio all the time. Genuinely nice man, lifetime of good hockey experience. Played a lot of levels, coached a number of NHL teams into shape. I hope he is helping choose a new POHO as well as very well connected. the worst PK in NHL history this far into a season, heads had to role unfortunately. I still think hiring a coach first is making same mistakes made with Torts. ‘I hope the hirings are more extensive.
  19. The lack of accountability is striking. ‘I really do hope it is because FA is taking his time, doing his research and preparing for whole sale changes to the team structure and management.
  20. Even the worst GMs in the league make some good moves. I think he is one of the worst GMs in the league or at least we have one of the worst management groups. I have defended him over the years saying he does the most important thing, he drafts and developed youth. I don't even believe that anymore. Our D has been built through UFA, our bottom 6 has been built through UFA, our farm team has been built through UFA. Trade record is sketchy at best and even high first rounders record is spotty. Most UFAs get extra money and term from him. At least he has been good at RFA deals. He is terrible in front of camera, makes unforced mistakes with being too open to the press. Coaching decisions have been questionable with both Willie and Green as well as the Assistants. His record is terrible, his success has come under very unique once in a life time circumstance or we would not have been a playoff team 2 years ago. So 8 years of awful we can look at all the elite prospects coming right, oh-yeah, almost nothing. They need a proper POHO to restructure the entire thing. At this point on-ice player decisions are secondary. House needs to be cleaned.
  21. I do kind of get the feeling that Aquilini is going to give Benning a chance to try fix things. Horrible mistake. It feels like every GM we get just makes the job harder for the guy coming next. Cupboards look almost as bare as when Gillis left and we are already down a second rounder for next year.
  22. Thread of the year candidate. Thank you.
