  1. It is a weird season that is for sure. It isn’t even anything on the ice. This team was not going to be much different than last year without changing the D. ‘It is the off ice craziness that is so different. Could anyone imagine a press conference like JR gave basically saying the team is tanking itself because of all the players we don’t want and can’t get rid of, coach left hanging from a noose and explaining how you prefer the Linden Vey/Corey Stillmans of the world over draft pics. This after all of the numerous unforced PR errors so far this season. No wonder the team has no faith in itself. It does look like we are finally seeing a team bottom out but have exactly the wrong person running it for a team bottoming out. Only worse choice I can think of would be Benning.
  2. Liked the words major surgery. Don’t like the distaste for draft pics but that has always been JR’s way.
  3. Other than the Bruins, what are the other championship teams since the cap came in that didn’t get built at the top of the draft? No one strategy is foolproof, and we keep hiring fools. But your best chance to build towards a championship is through cycling between building a core and then tearing it down when it is not competitive. Ottawa did a great job of this, they tore apart a team that went deep into the playoffs because they new it was the end of its competitive cycle and are building it correctly now, Chicago also took a championship team and rebuilt it to win more. ‘Our core was never built before we started acting like a championship calibre team, signing UFA after UFA to fill gaps, trading away high draft pics for short term solutions to maintain a GMs job instead of build a potential cup team.
  4. It isn’t just about Bedard though maximizing chances for him is good. The high end of the draft is where elite talents usually come from. You build championship teams around elite talents. Problem is we also lack depth at all levels at centre and especially right D. The system needs major surgery and best way to do that is selling off assets that aren’t working. ‘In the cap world this is how winners are built. Like it or not. Not being willing to tear it down and start over is how we continue to lose after a decade of loosing.
  5. 80% so far wow. ‘Unfortunately don’t think management is.
  6. Yep, we are the Mats Sundin Leafs. Stuck in the middle not willing to commit to what needs to be done.
  7. That has more to do with a decade of terrible cap management than an issue with the league. ‘Good teams usually bleed quality players because of salaries. That is what the cap does. We have just done such a terrible job that we lose quality players for cap constraints despite being bottom feeder.
  8. We have no notable centres outside of the NHL. No significant prospects. Our dearth of quality RHD just seems to dwarf it because so thin at the NHL level. By my best guess we should have about 5 more RHD prospects in our system than we do. Only thing we should feel good about is our depth of winger prospects. It is bustling. That is why team needs gutting, to rebuild the system.
  9. Your thinking like a fan not a GM. We need a gutting and tank for at least the rest of the season but management under FA has never done that. Usually the opposite, late season surges after the pressure is off to ruin draft position. ‘All the rumours out there sound like they have hired Tocchet but his broadcast contract requires 4 weeks notice which brings them to the all-star break. Another coaching change bump to ruin draft position. It is the nature of the FA Canucks, always bad but never bad enough.
  10. We really need to clear cap, JR understood this and still made the situation worse. I would really be looking to trade him to someone like TB who would not have a chance to sign him. At least if he gets to open market, he has had a year of playing with Pettey and really seems to like it here.
  11. Would add Brock and Garland to that list. ‘I think OEL buyout is inevitable but if they can manage to move out some players and bring back some NHL quality right D it may be best to give him another season with a quality partner and see if he is at least serviceable. Another year before the buyout will reduce the length of the penalty. Not really fair to judge any D who is mostly partnered with Myers but OEL looks surprisingly bad this year considering he was decent last year. ‘We are probably going to be bad for at least another season so he can absorb the loosing before his buyout. He has made a career of it.
  12. Don’t expect Bruce to survive this 0 point road trip unfortunately.
  13. Every GM I have ever heard when they get a veteran D man at the deadline say the same thing. He is a stabilizing force back there and will give us more depth. ‘I don’t think they will want high event hockey and crazy penalties at both ends when trying to find a late add for cup run.
  14. Was listening to a discussion on NHL radio about how important it is for season ticket subscriptions making the playoffs is in non-traditional hockey markets. I think that is what FA think we are and 15-25 years ago that was probably correct. Now I doubt they will have an issue filling the building if he came out and said we are rebuilding around EP and tanking for a couple years. People would come to see Bedard, Fantilli, Michkov. That is where Vancouver is at this point for money and corporate money in particular. ‘We have mostly been dreadful for 10 years, why not take the shot at this point, it is so close and the ultimate prize is right there. Even if we can only get down to a 9-10% chance at Bedard it is worth it to be in top 5-6 of this draft.
  15. True, he did take a lot more penalties in the off-season. ‘I don’t buy that he really has value after his bonus is paid. Cap space is a bigger commodity than money in current NHL. Arizona has no issue making the floor and there really aren’t any other cap floor teams after this many years of flat cap.
  16. Are we just saying random things about him? And he makes his off-season home in Kelowna.
  17. I like. Gudas is a nasty piece of work, need more of that. Bennet sliding into third line C would let us use Bo as more traditional 2C.
  18. It sounded more like FA wanted someone experienced with a championship pedigree and identified JR. This is what many had been asking for with JB, an experienced president. Not the one I would have chosen but certainly a well connected one.
  19. From the other side, some times complications happen and it isn’t really a blame issue but people always look to blame someone. Maybe QH doesn’t have a sophisticated understanding of the medical issues but is concerned and frustrated for a friend and teammate. ‘Don’t know if there was a mess up or not at this point and glad that JR is investigating it as that is appropriate. But to just assume that the doctor screwed up because recovery hasn’t been as hoped is jumping a lot of steps ahead.
  20. Well, we certainly aren’t one of the better run clubs. I also don’t think he was saying we are the worst run club ever. Even if we ignore the lack of clear direction, the overvaluing of players, inability to move roster player and the continued trading off of pics and prospects during what should be a rebuild, we have been a mess from a PR perspective. ‘The allegations against FA in camp (outside of management control but still bad look) ‘Rachel Dorrie mess the almost scratch of BB on hockey fights cancer night. Tanner Pearson JR constantly attacking the coach, and inexplicably keeps advertising he didn’t know he had a 2 year contract. JR constantly saying how the team isn’t good enough publicly. JR waxing poetic to the Pittsburgh media how he should have retired a Penguin. The list is growing every day and I probably forgot a couple things. I think there is fair argument that we have one of if not the worst run clubs out there. Add to that we have been following the lead of the Ballard Leafs, middling team that constantly thinks all they need is just one more UFA to be competitive.
  21. We are the Mats Sundin Leafs. Looking like we will do to EP what they did to Mats. Never give him a quality chance to win because we think we are always one more UFA away.
