Typical wisdom is that with a normal number of pics you should be able to get 2 players out of the draft in a good year. Increasing the number of pics increases the odds. The math is simple. Don’t need 5-6 players out of any given draft but if can pull 2-3 for a few years in a row your team is cruising.

And that is what JR has been saying because he is impatient. He wants players 26 and below. ‘Well, guess what, teams don’t trade young quality players, they trade the ones with many warts that they don’t see a big future in or they trade for ones of similar age and value. ‘We don’t need more of the former and have nothing to make deals on the latter. ‘When LA decided to retool they identified a core of a few vets that had done everything for them and then actually had some value in the other players and sold them off for a boatload of pics. Now they are on the way up and have passed us despite starting after us. ‘We aren’t in this position. To clear meaningful cap is going to cost us assets not get them. Nobody can or would trade for OEL or Myers. Pearson had played himself out of any value this year. Other teams see what has been happening with Brock. JTM couldn’t get a fair deal last year and his play this year with the ticking clock of his NMC has probably made things worse. ‘A run for the middle while waiting for contracts to expire is best chance to make some profit over the next couple of years for ownership because this isn’t going to be an easy rebuild like LA, NYR and TO we’re able to do (TO also bailed too early, they should have stuck with it for another year) and ownership doesn’t have the stomach for that. I think most of the serious fans do but we have little power.

Most rebuilds are keeping a small selection of players and selling everything else you can for pics and young prospects so you can develop a group together. ‘The core of the 2011 outside of the Sedin’s came up together on the Moose. We need to start doing similar again around Ep and QH this time instead of the twins.

If they can pull off trading Miller before his NMC kicks in and get any assets that aren’t dead cap space back I will be praising management from the roof tops. Until that day they just are re-hashing the Benning method. ‘We only had one high priced UFA signing this year and I really like the player but like the JTM deal, good player, wrong time.

Our problem is much deeper than adding two right D. Pronger couldn’t hold us in with the group of forwards we have not doing their part in the defensive zone. ‘Yes our right D is bad but it is the team D that is atrocious. The forwards are pulling off forechecks, letting opponents clear the zone too easy, lazy back checks and poor zone coverage. That and we are just small and not physical while not being terribly fast. The fly byes that our forwards seem to enjoy are embarrassing.

I think JR was very straightforward here and correct. ‘Dumping contracts meant selling pics and youth something we are not in position to do. Our vets have little to negative value around the league. ‘He didn’t want to lose assets for nothing so signed players to what seemed like fair contracts. ‘I think point 2 fights point 1 though. He just made cap situation worse while burning what we had on another winger. Benning royally screwed us and it will take a couple years of mediocrity to loose some of the contracts. Unfortunately we are still acting like Benning, signing high price UFAs in bottom six roles and bleeding away pics and prospects for developed B prospects. So the Benning screw job continues with a bigger front office.

Um, I think the top of the draft is where you get the talent. Just think a focused rebuild should help get out of the basement quicker as has worked in Toronto, LA and is working in Montreal. ‘Our GMs keep holding Edmonton up as an example of why rebuilding is hard but it is a specious argument as they never intentionally rebuilt.
-
Buffalo is puzzling. Every year they start good and fall apart. I think it is part of how they have spent their money. Putting big money on Skinner and injury prone winger (Sounds familiar). AZ won’t put the budget to be good and has been a management clustertruck. Stripped pics, drafting Miller etc. not to mention playing in a building that isn’t Good enough for many CHL teams.
-
The other myth is: look how long it took Edmonton to rebuild, you can get stuck at the bottom for a decade. ‘Edmonton never did a tear down rebuild. They were just incompetent (Benning anyone) and that ended them at the top of the draft every year. ‘They never sold off assets to buildup a large cohort of prospects to develop together as a core. They just kept adding the next 1OA and tried to complement with assorted vet castoffs and bad trades (Benning anyone).

Predict The Score Contest: VAN @ TOR November 12 2022
DrJockitch replied to goalie13's topic in Canucks Talk
Hard to get a bead on either of these teams. Big stage, Saturday night in Toronto the sort of thing teams get up for and given the makeup of this team, 6-3 Toronto, Tavares GWG. -
And in a vacuum I really like the Bear deal. But in the context of pics and prospects out for Stillman and Studnicka just seems a pattern of pics and futures going out for a team that is sinking. Rathbone wasn’t likely getting Marino. I do like the 3 Russians, Podz needs to get his game up to his standard. We need that big PF. Do really need to see some of these guys moved out but your kind of stuck with what you have now unless you find the right GM trying to save his job.

[Proposal] Revamping the roster blockbuster edition
DrJockitch replied to Odd.'s topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Well, you said crazy. -
His defensive stats have been consistently bad. He just has outscored the issues. He has been one of the biggest problems this year. ‘For a heart and soul guy he has been lazy on the back check, bails on problems he creates and frankly I don’t think came into camp in the shape he should have. OEL and Myers may be bigger long term problems but Miller has been a big problem this year.
