  1. I'd have to see the graph and have some explanations to that. You do know it only took Wayne 575 games to get 500 goals right? McDavid isn't even the best goal scorer in his era. Like i said, i've seen Hawerchuk, Stastny, will add Yzerman, Forsberg, Bure, Selanne, Sakic and maybe six other guys. Lindros one of them ...what would he do in todays game nobody could even come close to handling him!... what makes anyone think he's even above Crosby? He got injured (and maybe McDavid would have too, he played in a tougher era when he started as well...this era isn't so tough or rough doesn't require enforcers ... no redline without people lying on your back, hooking and holding to me at least, makes up and some for no butterfly technique and smaller equipment...it's only a difference of maybe 4% in todays game ... SP wise ....888 vs .908 or whatever it is. Edit: McDavid is probably 65% ... and he's special. But so were these other guys. I doubt he's going to be much more then Dionne was - and well, 18 year old Gretzky matched his best season.
  2. Same age? I think that is about right. Guys behind him were Kurri (on his line), Bossy, Stastny and Hawerchuk, the latter two all actually match up pretty decently with McDavid points adjusted. Maybe 61%?
  3. And one thing that hasn't been talked about yet regarding the Gretzky trade was the main value back for EDM owner Pocklington was that his grocery empire was bleeding cash and he needed that to stem the tide. Gretzky didn't demand a trade that's simply false. LA had been quietly pursuing Gretzky for years, and it wasn't until Pocklinton was offered 18.5 Canadian dollars that a deal was made. That was the main part of the deal - in today that would be the equivalent of a teams entire cap in one season, because 15 million US was about what it cost owners to ice an NHL team back then lol. 3 first rounders, and two young up and coming players would of been a lot more if the cash wasn't involved. This deal still has massive ramifications even today ... LA went from 11k attendance to the first pro team to sell out every game (in LA). All the stars wanted to see this phenom. And he didn't disappoint. McDavid is at best 60% the player. Unless you were alive to see what Wayne (Mario too) could do, then it's just tough to explain. His eye popping stats are there for a reason. Hockey grew in the US because of Wayne. A lot of players owe him their careers as a result of expansion then becoming a routine thing. As did interest in the sport to US citizens .. Mathews, would he have ever put on a pair of skates if ARI didn't exist? Doubtful. That's some butterfly affect sh!t lol. But likely true. Gretzky says in his book that if that team was kept together (don't forget Coffey left too!), they'd have won 5-6 more cups easily. Arguably the first or second best team ever. I'd say first despite the Steve Smith gaffe that cost them a run of five in a row. The fact they won another cup without Coffey and Gretzky, as well as half they support players says a lot. And well we all know how a reunion of Lowe, Messier, Anderson and half a dozen other guys went for us in 1994. So consider a 27 year old Gretzky deal in todays game. Already had 7-8 art Ross trophies (it was a joke they gave it to Dionne his rookie year, because he had a couple more goals - Gretzky tied him in less games played), 7 consecutive Hart trophies ... with adjusted points he'd lose 4-8% of his points. So 190 instead of 212/215 lol. From a cash strapped team, getting 75-80 million, 3 first rounders and Carson/Gelinas. That's what it would look like. Again the cash was the biggest part of the trade.
  4. Some recent articles on this goofy faced dummy: "Bouchard’s 35 points at even strength in the regular season was by some distance the most by any Oilers rearguard during the salary cap era. Indeed, they were the most by an Edmonton d-man since Steve Smith scored 42 EVP in 1987-88. That takes us all the way back to the Wayne Gretzky years when normal rules re: scoring simply did not apply." And: "This season, Bouchard was one of only six defencemen to rank top-20 in the league in both isolated impact on even-strength scoring chances (RAPM xGF/60), and 5v5 points. The other defencemen include Roman Josi, Cale Makar, Victor Hedman, MacKenzie Weegar, and Jaccob Slavin. Pretty decent company. To be more specific, Bouchard ranked 4th in the league in RAPM xGF/60, and ranked in the 99th percentile; put differently, Bouchard’s impact on generating scoring chances was superior to roughly 99% of the league’s defencemen" Notice who's name isn't on that list of defenseman? Weager and especially Slavin, are two of the league best defensive defenders... And this was Bouchard's first NHL season. Maybe Kieth had something to do with it, but he's nothing like the Kieth of old is he. Yes he needs to clean up some of his stuff in his own end ... maybe he's the second coming of Brent Sopel lol, who also had a tough time in his own end ... but at 22 he certainly isn't "garbage, slow, blah blah blah..." So far it looks like out of that group of excellent D's, Dahlin shouldn't have gone number one, QHs/Dobson are fairly equal in value all considered - ones a RHD and 6'4", the other is maybe Phil Housley lite because he doesn't score goals. Bouchard has a bomb from the point and certainly looks like he's got a shot at their PP soon. IF that happens lol, 60-70 points is for sure within his reach.
  5. Severson is a great rental this year ... and could easily become a Myers replacement if we want to re-sign him (which i assume we would - and i'm sure he'd be interested given his BC ties)... Rathbone is NHL ready, and a little beast in the gym (not tiny arms legs flat chest QHs style there) - but we can't and shouldn't be playing both him and QHs on the left side either. Every team in the league would know to go to that side because 2/3 of the time they won't have to deal with OEL who's not exactly he-man either. So he's expendable (which is too bad because he's got a lot of potential to be say, someone's teams Girard). Can't pass up on Severson if the price isn't too steep. NJ will likely trade him, or let him walk for nothing if they are in a solid playoff spot (doubt they will be in that conference...but bubble possibly).
  6. Huge overpayment for a rental in Severson, and underpayment for Carlo. But i like those targets! Edit: Ahh I saw Dickie ... so get that maybe that's fair then Severson)... Carlo maybe if we added this years first...im not sure they are ready to rebuild yet.
  7. Miller has said all the right things. Loves Vancouver, being a Canuck, the province, the fans, and his teammates. Also acknowledges and is grateful that our team finally gave him a shot to be a first line player. JR also is saying the right things too... that they are far off in what this team can afford to pay him, and that they are in no rush to trade him. And won't feel that pressure until closer to the TDL. Personally i think he's going to feel a lot of heat then. Because he's could and quite likely will damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Can't re-call, many if any times, a team that's doing very well trading away their best player just because he's going to be a UFA. Often they don't even if they suck (NYI and Tavares). The owners might be the ones to make the decision for him. Playoffs mean money. As does having a player like Miller on the team (merchandising and seat filling) and there for sure is a certain logic to getting this core playoff reps now. Those experiences are awfully important in their "playoff development". And well, we are a much better team then the bubble one on paper. What if Demko has a switch in him he can flip. That's a contender right there with what else we've already got. To me i'm totally fine with playoffs and Miller chasing money somewhere else if he's not willing to come down or meet JR/Allvin somewhere in the middle.
  8. This could be on the table for sure. I did wonder what worked out with Horvats explosion down the stretch too (actually best on team, even EP)... Also hope JR/Allvin follows up with his comments, that he'd be signed before the start of the season. Sure would be nice to see some buy in with this group. Leaving a little money on the table that is. Not sure that pace is sustainable, but do think these guys know what they have to do to win. And that we are a dark horse based on what we managed with Bruce. Team got a little stronger this off season. And look at how many guys on this team that can score 15-40 goals. EP, Horvat, Miller, Brock, Garland, Podz, Kuzmo, Pearson, Ilya M, maybe even Linus Karlsson. 4 30 goal scorers and possibly one or two 40 goal scorers and maybe 8 20 goal scorers. It's crazy. Haven't seen that since the early 90's Linden teams. This team has a chance to have one of the best seasons this clubs ever had. Our PP under Bruce, was better then the peak Sedin years. Our GF went way up and our GA way down. Edit: I think we could be buyers this TDL. Seems counterintuitive going into the season... Severson would be a great add though. And wouldn't have to change much to jam him in. He's going to get futures ... and he's almost certainly traded ... UFA next summer and they both can't afford him and already have their R side sorted out for a long time with their prospects plus Hamilton and Marino.
  9. With Kadri's deal... Zib's, others. I think we'd better accept it will either be an 8 year deal with us or 7 somewhere else. With cap going up likely quite a bit, two seasons from now, only Millers (Horvats too!) first year will be flat cap. He's worth 8.5-9 right now, currently as he's been playing. Actually more then that (if he has another boffo season), it's what the Sedins got after just a couple seasons of PPG play. I think their deals were 11% ish of the cap, also at a time when the cap stalled. So 8.8-9 definitely is on par. No way Miller regresses playing on this team. It's going to get better. Also i'd say 50/50 Miller either scores 85 points or 100. That's no longer a fluke (four seasons in a row)....He loves being the man. And it shows. There is a way we could shoehorn Miller and Horvat in. Between the two we are looking at 4-6 million in raises. That's Brock and Pearson. We'd get a tidy return for both those guys. And it doesn't have to happen until next off season. Options. Garland and Ilya M, plus even Kuzmo provide options. Kuzmo...well THN predicts he's going to score 50ish points ... if he does well we are likely contenders this season. Garland 62... Brock mid 50's (but also getting his goals). Miller won't earn his next deal. Tiny odds he's Pavelski or becoming a HHOFer...only those guys earn their deals in the 33-38 range. My guess is if he scores 85ish then 8.75 x 7 ... if he scores 100 again, well then double digits is possible. Down the stretch he was on pace for 120 points ... at one point he had 27 in 15 games lol.
  10. Exactly. And right now Demko plus QHs are cost controlled. Who knows what their next deals look like, but just like Millers next one, in 4-5 years those guys will be up for theirs too (legacy deals that is). Capwise this team is entering its peak right now (thanks JB lol it's pretty decent but could be better!). Possibly even at it this season. Personally i consider this part of our "window" even though it's not wide wide, it's worth a look at what this team can do with Miller this season .... if the wheels fall of it's pretty easy to trade a few guys to help for the future. Tricky part is doing it in a way those guys do want to stay indeed, and also manage to ascend or at least stay pretty even while we wait for the D to be sorted. Teams usually have to wait for cap to go up once their core is on their third deals. And often (CHI, LA), it doesn't work...once the stars get paid ... yikes. Question, i do get that it's the 26-32 age you get the best from your group...i've read quite a few saying our window is in four years. I could agree with that, the majority of our guys will be in that age group then. Miller (if he stays), would be 33 so just outside it...I'm hoping that we get a long window, like PIT, WSH, Boston, even St. Louis and SJ had. And that there will be a few bumps in the road. I guess i see value in Miller and playoffs versus trading Miller just to avoid his next deal. It's really tough to guess how this season plays out. Do we play like we did down the stretch the entire season? Or do things sink down to Earth a little. I think the former. I'm glad Miller hasn't been traded yet, it means like they've said, they are in no rush. And playoffs for sure is the goal this season. Hedican/Brown Lafayette ... well maybe Miller becomes that for us at or before the trade line, sure would be nice for us. Cap won't go up in time to sign both Horvat and Miller ... will it, not without some less then ideal trades return wise. Tiny bit of space left for next season as it is. Kadri getting 7 years means Miller likely will want 8. Edit: Food for thought. If we simply have to trade Miller because no way he's going to earn his next deal...what makes QHs and Demko so different in 4-5 years? Will they also need to be traded because they can't earn their legacy deals? Get QHs will be a couple years younger ... But not Demko.
  11. As an aside. Two things. UFAs rarely score a point for every 100k much past 5. The ones that do are absolutely gravy. For that matter RFAs don't do it enough either. It's great value. And well here we are freaking out over Poolman and Dickie. When EP, as an RFA on a bridge deal even couldn't manage that. But let's trade Garland...:and Pearson.
  12. Tofu. Something you sometimes eat but then think? Why? Move on indeed.
  13. It was his fourth season. And he also lost to guys like Bolton and Chris Neal before that ... again didn't mind pounding away at guys like Witt, Komiserak, Clarkson, Barrett Jackman .... Eager (a draw - the same guy that a 41 year old Gary Roberts destroyed!) and Ruutu etc ... but when he fought the actual fighters he didn't do as well. Agree he's a top heavy in todays game. It also goes to show what's happened to the league. I remember when this happened, it was news because it was the first time he actually fought one of the leagues best heavy's even though he had the same or bigger frame. Not the same as Roberts tuning Eager or Shanny almost retired, going at it with Brashear, is it?
  14. We could also make calculated assumptions, that we won't be there in four years too. That's Demko's last year. And QHs is up a year after that. I don't disagree with this either, but find it a bit presumptuous that we will have a better shot in four years then we do right now.
  15. Well at least U2 is all done with. With apologies. Not that i didn't like U2, i freaking loved them - but might as well go up a level and play some Zeppelin, or even the Stones or Beatles. In that order.
  16. Only Lucic and Chara were around during a time players were seriously tough and rough still, Chara more so. I lost a lot of respect for Lucic when he finally fought a really good fighter (think it was Orr), got in trouble and screamed for the linesman to come in and help him out, Up until them didn't mind making punching bags of lesser fighters and smaller players. Prout lol ... not exactly a "killler" but handled him too. It was the end of an era, and one that he didn't seem to entirely understand as far as the code went. Chara. Well he was never a top enforcer or close to it either, but he i absolutely respect. And well, Lucic i suppose is just what's left of what's left of that breed of players.
  17. Absolutely! He's now worth 6 firsts. A Schnieder and a 3C.
  18. Vintage. Wow. On a coffee break or something.
  19. Sure maybe. But i think they've got the advantage even with Miller ... well until I remember, Tanev is due for an injury and Markstrom is too.
