Wayne Gretzky sued for $10 Million for lying about gum.
IBatch replied to nuckin_futz's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Brilliant. What judge is going to give this guy any money. If your that rich and that stupid, it's just a trust fund idiot without anything better to do. Like seriously. What a joke. Naivety and business doesn't go well when it comes to investing. Maybe we should be selling this guy some Nigerian Prince stuff. A fool and his money, is soon separated. Isn't that common knowledge! Man Wayne's jaws must be ripped! Lost 35lbs by chewing gum. Good grief. Thanks for the laughs though! -
[Proposal] Trade Miller to Florida

Since the cap came in.. only ANA and LA won a cup(s) with high taxes. That's not a lot of teams. And nobody over 50%. As for next up, WSH 42-45% depending on where they resided. Then Detroit St. Louis at 43%ish. After that PIT at 42.68%. Then CHI and COL, CAR and Boston at 41 and change. Then TB x 2 at 36.61%.... Back during the peak Sedin years our taxes were 47.62ish..:not great but not terrible either. MTL making the final was the only team since the cap came in, that was a bridesmaid at over 50% taxes. Wonder how much Weber liked that trade lol. He's loaded but wow that's a lot of money he left in NSH. LA at least gives us hope. But the odds are absolutely, heavily not in our favour. And that team wasn't a good regular season one ... missed the playoffs after the cup .. bottom, low seeds both cups too. And the harsh reality is, most great teams, were taxed an average of 10% less then we are currently. Wouldn't it be nice to have an extra 8 million or so in cap space? Edit: BTW, Bobrovsky makes 900k more a year then McDavid does. Think about that. -

One more thing about taxes. Right now their are 4 teams at 53.07ish... TO, OTT, MTL and Van. The next bracket is 47.5- 49 ish that's ANA,SJ,LA, CAL,EDM,NYI,NYR, NJ and WNP just over 50% then a couple teams between 42% and 45% then you've got a bunch in the low 40's. that's the next bracket. Then you've got Seattle, Vegas, Dallas, NSH, FLD, TB sitting at 36 and change. Those NTC/NMC become awfully important to guys in those cities. Sure he's they are athletes and want to win. Alf and any interested - this is the deal i hypothesize that Miller will demand to stay in Vancouver. Check out what the same deal would be net pay like, in all the US cities. [Proposal] Trade Miller to Florida

Cars ... well they are much cheaper in the US, even after you do the exchange rate. Boats and big toys too. Houses are irrelevant. Markets are what markets are and these guys can buy houses all over the world. Any angle you look at, these guys have much better buying power in the US.. Anyone who travels there, will notice how cheap everything is quickly. The incidentals like gas, food, clothing, are cheaper after the exchange in most cases ... not that it matters because what does it mean to these guys? 10k plus or minus a year either way - doesn't come close to touching the 825ish Miller for example, has lost each year he's been here. Sure was a great investment for him, because now he's getting a boffo legacy deal. If it was a couple percentage points, it wouldn't be a topic. 36.4ish compared to 53.07....even on a 750k deal matters. On a 5-10 million dollar deal those numbers get massive quite quickly. No wonder guys in TB all insist on NMC's - because they don't want to leave "hey look at my team friendly deal, that's not really one unless i stay here". This wasn't as big a deal when only a couple teams had no state tax. Now there are six. The six CALi and NY teams with their jock tax offset the five heavily taxes CAN teams. The bulk of the other US teams pay 40-42%...still a whopping difference... Used to only be four ... back during the Sedin era, taxes were the same in Van as Alberta ... which is actually slightly better then the high jock tax teams. At least it was more of a level playing field. Since then more US players then ever have been drafted. Europe about the same, so it's slowly whittling away at good old Canadian boys chance at a job in the NHL. Now, like back then as well, most of the best Canadians play in US cities. Of course they should too because well, we only have seven teams. Salary discloser (and deals been done in US currency) knocked out two of our teams within a few years, and even Vancouver was in serious trouble until the Griffiths sold their stock ... and right until Aqua saved our bacon. Seattle was a real threat to us. Now Seattle and Vegas were added ... two more no state tax teams. Canadian teams no wonder we charge so much to see a game ... have to make an extra 20-30 million just to cover the payroll for the players! Every deal JB signed came with a little extra ... had to dip into TB before Millers NTC kicked in (which he also shredded as was his right once we got him) to help with our cap. High taxes. TOs big deals ... well guess Tavares wanted to come but only if his tax was mitigated. Mathews. Does anyone really think he won't move back to the US? QHs... do we really think he's going to re-sign with us, Demko too...CAL pays 5% less then we do approx ... Florida pays over 16% less then Vancouver. Mathew T seriously cashed in. Johnny Hockey not as much but still cashed in big time. Compared to CAL. Huberdeau ... well what would that deal look like in Florida? A bit more palatable for sure - but he's used to low taxes isn't he. The more angles you look at this, the bigger the issue seems to be. WNP lost so many guys ... ouch. OTT too although they seemed cursed lol Those market's are tough one's... they'd need some massive draft luck to ever win a cup. Because nobody wants to stay, and they don't have tax relief like the majority of the US teams do. Sure they start drafting mostly Canadians. I would if i was them. When has a Canadian team won a cup? Well right after salary discloser and that was mostly Roy's work. Since then... we simply have found it tougher and tougher to compete. This is a problem. And think that the NHL needs to address it. Give some cap relief to certain teams, and or penalize others. Or simply make all contracts net pay and adjust the cap accordingly. So when a player is traded - he gets his net pay and that's it, not 825ish K like Miller lost or if traded back will gain back. -
[Proposal] Trade Miller to Florida
IBatch replied to Hairy Kneel's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Thing is that's Millers exact value as a rental. A grade A prospect (top 30), and a late first plus maybe a 2nd or 3rd to boot with retention. TO media was willing to do Kerfoot, their two best prospects (former 15th overall and a second rounder - both B level guys though) and their first. Kerfoot of course their 3rd line guy, Pearson type cap hit with one year left (this season). At this point Florida is a contender. Not saying Miller will go there. But if he did they'd have to part with something on their actual roster to make it fit (we'd retain of course) and their better young player(s), because they don't have anything in their system left or picks either really. So not a great fit. That said it's hockey and you never do know. Florida also has no state tax ... means they could hypothetically, offer Miller a deal of 7.25 x 8 which is the same pay as Vancouver offering 8.75 x 8. Of course they'd have to trade away a roster player to fit him in. But could do it in their off season, a TDL deal with retention wouldn't be tough for any contender or top 20 ish teams ... To me the sweet spot would be trading Miller to a bubble playoff team ... and that team missing the playoffs. That first becomes something of value then. Late firsts? Well just spend some time (anyone not you specifically) and you won't find many gems there. Sure sometimes, but just as often as second rounders really. -
[Proposal] Miller to Carolina
IBatch replied to Makaramel MacKhiato's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Schnieder was never on the table. We just think he was because that's who we wanted. Lundqvist isn't even a top hundred prospect, a bad trade with their first IF he was as well, and where did Kakko come from? Was he even part of this deal at all? ... last year Rathbone started in the 80's and moved up to around 61... CDC isn't a reliable source. Allvin and co did the right thing. Our team was playing too well, and the deals we thought might be there obviously were not. Maybe Schnieder will be this year, maybe not. And if we are tops or close to tops in our division which we will be if Bruce keeps it up with them... then Miller probably stays for our playoff run. Edit: For those curious what Miller could get - I agree with what the experts said: a grade A prospect (Tippet), a roster player (or retention), and picks (1st and a 3rd) ... that's what Claude Giroux got. TO's deal for Miller by their media was Kerfoot (one year left, decent roster player to make cap work), their two best prospects (both small forwards B level projects) and their first. That's a far cry from Kakko (recent 2nd overall! that fans on this team were willing to sell the farm for, many who thought was better then J Hughes), Schneider, and a first lol. Some folks think Miller is getting us way more then he actually will get us. He's an awesome rental. That's worth futures, not roster players on teams going for a cup that will keep them going for a cup for years going forward. I wanted Byram before he came back because felt it was possible we could poach him before his stock went up (and got blasted on the CDC saying he was damaged goods and not nearly enough lol) That's a fairy tale now too. They re-signed Manson, Byram Manson was their second paring and now will remain that way. If expectations aren't tempered, and a Miller trade occurs, there are going to be some pretty peeved off fans on this site with the return. The prize will be something in the Tippet range, and a late first. Which of course, could work out great - but is the same odds as a second rounder working out most of the time. Our amateur scouting needs to be on point. Or a bag of pucks for Miller is what we'd actually get. -
I loved Lazar when he was with with Sens. Never seen a more positive guy on the ice and around his teammates while with the juniors either. Was always smiling. Constantly. Not sure he's still doing that - but folks like that usually are who they are and doubt it's changed. Was stoked when we added him and still am, at the very least he's going to rub off on the other guys. And adds depth for cheap. Was a great signing for us, was a kid with a ton of leadership. That's not common. Bet his teammates will love him, and this city and fanbase too.

New Jersey needs cheap guys and futures more then anything to help balance their books. Which makes Severson a prime poaching candidate, similar to what Sakic did if a teams lucky enough, with Devon Toews. He probably won't be available for cheap but you never just know ... i'd be seriously kicking tires though, and offer then one of Hogs or Rathbone plus a second. Or well, just two seconds. With his ties to the province already it just makes a lot of sense. I'd rather use Miller and worry about what to do and who to keep next year or after the playoffs. Nobody is going to care too much if we have a good team now are they? About trading futures. I don't think Severson is going to have another season like last one, a big part of that was Hamilton went down ... but if we are looking for a medium - long term QHs partner, we could do a lot worse ... he's 2-4 years older then some of the guys we've considered for a Miller trade ... essentially he's a Myers replacement. OEL Severson maybe also works. He's not going to score 48 points on NJ again with Marino in the mix ...NJ isn't quite ready to compete yet, likely misses the playoffs in that division/conference ... but are getting closer. And have a lot of young guys. Severson seems like the odd man out now, and for sure could see him getting 48 points playing with QHs...Or 30 plus with OEL. Could anchor our second PP unit which at this point actually looks pretty decent. As a rental he's probably worth what Toews cost. And defensemans' primes are in the 28-33 range.. My hope is he'd be our Hamhuis type, but on the right side, and this could allow us to trade Myers to help with our cap in the off season. Essentially we have one year of very good cap value ourselves, a ton of great forwards to work with to make our own trades ... adding and jamming Severson in before the season or at the TDL has merit. I'm pretty bullish about our chances in our own division this season...adding a top four D? It's hockey and who knows, maybe he's a missing ingredient. Or maybe he's Ballard 2.0 as in just a bad idea...think the former is more likely. Just have a little tickle this could be a season to remember, if we could add a top four D, while keeping most of the rest.
-
For sure recency bias ... but would you bet against him? Maybe. And maybe you should too. Said it early on, going into year 3 of EPs career THN boldy stated (after the bubble) that EP was the 8th best player in the entire NHL and Horvat 43ish .. one spot away from Mathew T.

Alf. All the players get paid in US dollars and have for decades now. And any of these guys can purchase houses wherever they want. One thing though, which is yet another disadvantage for CAN players is, they all have to file taxes in the US if they own property. This is a serious problem for all CAN teams. As soon as salary disclosure boosted the players salary's... and the US dollar became the norm - two teams left. Sure WNP came back ... how they doing anyways. The honeymoon phase is over and i doubt they ever win a cup. Edit: JTM says all the right things but i will believe it when i see it. Can go play in 3/4 of his home country and make so much more money then in Vancouver. Sure we gave him the chance to be a first line player. Maybe that's worth him staying. And hope it is because i love Miller. But i'm not holding my breath either. 8.5 here is like 7.2 in a lot of US states... And isn't that about the max we can stomach... sure is for me. Might as well just enjoy him while he's here. -
One thing Horvat did do, and this might surprise some folks. was score more goals then anyone else on the team down the stretch. Would be ahead of everyone if what Bruce did after the change, duplicates over a full 82 games. Cy Young award for sure .. 45ish goals and 20 ish assists lol. To me that was more about Horvat getting pushed by Miller and circumstance then anything. EP is the real deal. He's going to start taking a run at what the Sedins accomplished very soon ... and accomplished a lot more at the same age (only Bure, Linden and Nedved for one year did more then EP at the same age really .. and Nedved was one year!) ... Horvat could be a really good playoff performer for us though. Wish his sample size was bigger ... but so far he's done it at all levels. Here is the list ... yes EP, Miller ... and even Pearson we're line drivers. That said wouldn't read much into it, a total blender really. Hogs EP Podz isn't going to be the second coming of Wayne's and Mario's best lines.

Ok. So the team that adored Tavares, and was crushed when he didn't sign with them ... was somehow a cancer in the locker room. Without Trotz that team would have been dead in the water..and well even Trotz and Lou don't seem to be enough. Tavares played on some really bad NYI teams. Guys likely going to pass the Sedins in points before he's done and have over 500 goals. So not sure what your going on about. Whenever i read your posts, this is what i see, maybe that's the point but if so / well hilarious. At least your consistent. But wouldn't it be more fun if you decided not to be the class clown? I bet you'd have some good insights. -

No worries. I wasn't sure right away and it's 11:32 lol right now... I totally agree, what you see in Nurse is what your getting. I don't go check out other teams sites, but bet the are having a really tough time justifying Nurse right now. And seriously wondering what they have in Bouchard (sure a lot to like about him his first full season) and Broberg. -

Ten Schmilly a year in Vancouver is 9 in CAR so ... well not as ridiculous ... or 8.5 in six other teams around the league. -
Yep. Including this one. All bad. Anyway they try ... well it's just bad, or at least not as good as the original. Like Coke. They changed it, then brought back "Classic Coke" but it wasn't the same either. We brought back the Skate and well Miller said it best. Play it for every home game.

[Discussion] Projecting Pacific Division 2022/23 Final Finish
IBatch replied to VegasCanuck's topic in Canucks Talk
Was actually talking about Bouchard. Had 10 even strength goals... 35 points, 43 overall. For sure played a sheltered role but he's the same age as QHs and doesn't get the PP time yet. Nurse i agree, he should be in his prime now ... and what you get is what your going to get and his deal is worse then OELs, maybe the worst one in the league for D's. Maybe he will earn it i suppose that's a possible, but i would rather have OEL for the rest of his deal, at least he's actually done it before. Nurse one good year really. Broberg plays the left side, Bouchard the right. It's possible they have a good pairing in the making. Heffy and others comments about these guys being trash etc - well it's a tad early isn't it? 22 year old D scoring 43 points, plus 10...isn't trash. On our team he wouldn't be considered a "busteroo" either. Maybe he's just another Brent Sopel type too. But time will tell. Edit: Check this out .. This season, Bouchard was one of only six defencemen to rank top-20 in the league in both isolated impact on even-strength scoring chances (RAPM xGF/60), and 5v5 points. The other defencemen include Roman Josi, Cale Makar, Victor Hedman, MacKenzie Weegar, and Jaccob Slavin. Pretty decent company. To be more specific, Bouchard ranked 4th in the league in RAPM xGF/60, and ranked in the 99th percentile; put differently, Bouchard’s impact on generating scoring chances was superior to roughly 99% of the league’s defencemen. Edit: Again when was the last time we've had a 5 x 5 D that had that much impact? Bieksa is the correct answer. Most people probably don't have a clue. The fact he's a RHD adds to that equation. This was only his first full season, and that company, wasn't even close to capable of doing what he did, their first full year. Edit: aGENT ... lol... well ... it's only one season right? -
Theodore in Vegas vs Alex P as well. Once he's in his peak prime ... but for now at least, took a back seat so far. Look at what he managed as their number one PP guy etc ... all around very good top two. As for the OP article, no glaring disagreement here. So we are third best D in the division ... wonder where our forward group stacks up, and of course goaltending? Once you consider that, and how both EDM and VAN did after their coaching changes (and of course EDM added E Kane, off ice stuff aside, that was a big add for them)...it's why i believe it's going to be a dogfight between these two clubs for first in the division. CAL is worse. Vegas lost all their depth lol... and now no Lehner. Last year key injuries to key guys messed them up ... i doubt Eichel is enough for them to have a rebound. Oh how the mighty have fallen. CAL also ... well guess these guys aren't too happy to play with Sutter lol...and wonder about Tanev and Markstrom being able to play the games they need too as well. If they are healthy then for sure add them to the mix with us and EDM but they aren't going to have a season like they did last year either.

IBatch replied to VegasCanuck's topic in Canucks Talk
He's got quite a bit of clean up to do in his own zone, but yes he's got a lot of potential for a young RHD. Heffy and others will call him "trash" etc ... but he sure can put up the points ... and scores goals. Decent chance he becomes a regular on the first PP unit, and if that happens 60-70 points isn't out of the question. Last year 10 EV goals and 25 assists ... that's about what QHs scored but more goals, it's also very good production from the back end. Who was the last Canuck to score 10 even strength goals? Salo? -
As far as rankings go ... there aren't many lists anyone will ever agree on. ESPNs top 50 NHLers gave Canucks zero love. Miller didn't make the cut...guess who did...as far as C's go... 1. Mathews 3. Mckinnon 4. Barkov 5. McDavid 10. Aho 11. Drasaitl 15. Stamkos 16. Zib 17. Point 19. Crosby 27. Bergeron 31. Tavares 32. Kadri 37. Reinhardt 38. Lindholm 39. Thomas 41. O'Reilly 46. Kyrou How's that for a kick in the nuts and a pretty iffy list lol. Tavares didn't make the OPs list lol.
-
Aho yes i'd agree he's too high ... Zib/Miller it's pretty close there. Miller more points, Zib a better two way player...Bergeron is the Lidstrom of Selke's lol...ages like fine wine. Unbelievable all-time player. Edit: For sure they also are taking careers into consideration, as well as potential. Guess they don't think Miller can do it again... Eichel? Based on just last season, Points and Malkins maybe too simply based on games played, don't really belong on this list (but of course actually do!). Miller, i bet next years he's in the top 7-8 range. IF he's on our team. Also see EP moving up into the top ten as well. Miller was scoring at 120 point pace down the stretch, EP over 40 goals and 90 points too... and Horvat just for sh!ts and giggles, actually more goals then EP! A lot to like about next season.
-
Looks like they are including a broad sample size with these rankings, hard to debate most of it. And likely adding for potential as well. Think Point might be too low (Point vs Aho?, well Point has done quite a bit more hasn't he?) and having watched Zib most of his career don't have any issues with him ranked ahead of Miller although it's pretty close. After that Miller isn't better then anyone else on that list ... once you get to 8 only Barkov isn't a lock for the HHOF. And well, Bergeron probably wins all the Selkes until he retires, or at least is a finalist. Wonder where Horvat fits in the top 30...my bet is he'd make the cut for sure. And i doubt we'd find another team in the league with 3 guys in the top 30...only a couple have two in the top 20 as well (aside from us of course).
-
Start of the season he looked lost many nights, and let's face it, was pretty bad. A year before he was ranked higher ... one year he was ranked by THN as the 8th best player in the entire league lol...they got a little too excited expecting a break out (their top 50 league wide all positions), that was right after the bubble ... Horvat also made the cut at 43 best in the world and would have made this ranking list too after the bubble...they are pretty fluid year to year.
-
I agree with Miller somewhat "we became a top defensive team in the league under Bruce, and it was the PK that killed our season " and kept saying before Bruce came in this team is pretty good 5 x 5, but our PK sucks and both EP and Brock need to get going ... when Bruce came in that happened. And we became a top defensive team. 12-13th in PK from dead last ...4th in PP, top four winning percentage, GAA way down GF way up.
