  1. Sure but a lot of other guys were too but well...not as good right?
  2. Thing is... based on last years line combos, Pearson was one of the guys that worked well no matter what one you put him on pretty much.
  3. Dobson is what ... 22? What did Miller do at 22. And what will he do from now until he's 32? Miller will be ... 39/40 by then. And guess what. QHs and Dobson are the same age. Let's look at this a little more. QHs is a -24, played 209 game, has 19 goals and 146 assists for 165 points ... plays the left side 1.5/1 league wide ratio natural left side D's, is 5'9.5 and 172lbs ... Dobson, same age, plays the right side, 160 games, 17 goals (13 last year), 55 assists and 72 points, 51 last year vs 68 and -3 on his career...plus is 6'4" lol. Not saying Dobson is the better player (right now).... but he's a complete package which adds to his value. And scoring goals is better then secondary assists anyday. I'd be awfully tempted to do a one for one deal ... if they added their first i'd do the deal. Again there are 150 LHDs for every 100 RDs in the NHL...to me that evens things up a lot. Plus, well i like my D's big and mean. Second season... i'm not sure how long QHs can go without a major injury come the second season ... sure was a target first crack at it. As for Miller. Well sure he's pretty good. But nobody is going to be shocked if last season was his career one are they. Think maybe he can repeat if EP is on his line often. If not .,, back to PPG or just over. Still very decent. But for how much longer? If Miller gets us Dobson i will eat my phone and post it on this site for proof. That's how certain i am it won't happen. What will he get us... well unless we completely dupe a GM, a grade A roster player. a 20-32ish pick overall, and a roster player back who's cap isn't that good. What did Hall get again? And he was a Hart winner, first overall etc etc. If i had to guess Giroux's return would be good for us. And think if we were offered that deal we probably would have taken it. But we were not. Maybe I'm biased still given QHs was the 3rd D i'd have picked in his draft year. Because again, you can't teach size and he's not Chelios or even Bieksa who was also challenged that way. Used to be a time when Jovo was just average sized for a D. As far as coaches go, Bruce is good too. NYI entire team struggled last season. They also overachieved the previous two years. Edit: Have no problem admitting when i'm wrong, and with QHs i was wrong. Glad we have him. But would trade anyone on this team to make it better.
  4. He did move guys around but also stacked things up down the stretch and when he did we kept climbing so im not so sure. It will be tough to predict what he does with his new toys. Ilya M ... he worries me ... is he as good as Hyman who TO fans loved ... i don't think so (anyways yet). Anyone who plays with some of the best in the world, their stats get a big bump. I do like his hustle...hope our pro scouting didn't sh!t the bed with that one. CHI used to pump out guys like crazy that left and became underwhelming. Anyways guess we find out. Obviously management liked Podz and is making things a little easier for him. I do too. As for your lines ... Pearson won't get bumped by Hogs. Doubt it. Garland could get bumped by Podz. Actually think Brock is going to be trade bait this year so do see him getting top minutes. His 5 x 5 time well, just sucked last year. Garlands not at all. And he's much cheaper. Bruce is the bomb so pretty sure he works with these guys and likes what he's got to work with.
  5. If we go there ... then we have to add Messier, ahead of everyone else.
  6. Wow. Actually two decent/good deals...someone pinch me! Make it so Allvin. I mean do something already ... Sept 1 couldn't come sooner. Well except i hope it doesn't lol have stuff to do.
  7. Ugh. And how much is Tanev making ... and how many points did he get last season?
  8. Doesn't OTT have Chabot still...or am i missing something.
  9. This guy could ... just by telling the team that has the first overall pick to swap with Vancouver's 7th rounder.
  10. Passing Espo is a bit of a stretch...two cups, best forward league wide on the greatest Bruins team and one of the greatest teams ever assembled ... before Gretzky kids in the 70's grew up playing street hockey wanting to emulate or play Espo...or Clarke, or Lafleur those were your top choices ... I'd say yes for sure ahead of Neely, didn't play enough. Still yes, he should go down as one of their greatest ... Orr, Borque/Shore, Espo, Bergeron/Chara Borque ahead despite not winning a cup goes to show what type of player he was and what he meant to that franchise. The entire league/older fanbase cheered for him in COL, don't think we will see that happen again for a long time if ever really. Can't see any current player doing what Borque did other then maybe Makar, and he's already won a cup. And isn't as good on the D side of the puck (yet anyways) or as tough to play against. Hard to find any team as rich in D history as the Bruins. Espo though, like i said, broke barriers never seen before at the time, and even the high scoring 80's (further expansion) didn't produce many players that outscored him.
  11. That would be great for the fans and the team. Horvat signed before the season starts is smart. It shows this teams direction .... as well as creating a domino effect in what to expect going forward. 6.5 x 8 is what i'm expecting.., Edit: After posting this did some googling and was a bit shocked to see what the Hockey Writers had to say about Horvats next deal. 7.85 x 8. They listed Hertl and Schenn as his best comps (and here I thought Kevin Hayes was expensive lol!). Last year they said based Horvat outproduced his contract by one million dollars. But they by the year 2023-2024 he no longer would. Is it just me, or does this seem like a gross overpayment for a good second line C with leadership abilities? Once we get to that dollar amount ... doesn't it make a bit more sense just to bite the bullet and sign Miller instead (the better player, at the same age too)....
  12. Gotta love all this Myers love. There is a scenario where Myers retires a Canuck ... as in re-signs at half or less his current pay once his deal is done. Personally never minded the signing and have grown fond of having him on the team. OEL Myers did a lot of heavy lifting last season ... and weren't terrible despite playing against the league best often enough. Too bad we don't have another top four RHD in the mix. Or a defensive D like Tanev (or Tanev for that matter!). Severson is a decent target as a patchwork. Looking at what Toews is managing in COL on their top pairing ... Wonder what a QHs Severson pairing might look like. And it wouldn't cost much as a pure add just for this season.
  13. Aren't you a little less apprehensive regarding Miller with JB gone? And other things .... I am. Seems like he had a my way or the highway vibe going on and was running a small dictatorship. Now we have a pro organization again, with a President that has seen and done it all (plus a winner, with two different teams)... JB wasn't all bad, not nearly as bad a some make him out, but the two steps forward, 1.5 steps back stuff was getting old. Don't mind that Allvin is being patient. Miller likely gets traded even if we are in a good spot down the stretch, unless we are a top 5-8 team league wide that wide. Only then could i see them actually reversing their narrative and Miller stays for a playoff run... and maybe we pry Severson from NJ if they are out ... If we had another solid top four D ... well you just never know.
  14. Edler led the entire league in minus one year ... last year he was touted as "saving the season" as an old vet when Doughty went down.
  15. This is space cadet level dreaming. Miller is getting us a decent return, but nothing like this. If we want Dobson, it starts with QHs ... i'd say EP but can't see why they wouldn't want a defenseman back with Barzal already in the lineup. Would you do that? QHs for Dobson straight across?
  16. The only way we'd get Dobson is trading QHs for him (well or EP)...so is there any stomach for a move like that? If we traded QHs for Dobson and an unprotected first in next years draft ... it would be awfully tempting wouldn't it? Rathbone then would have a spot...and we'd finally get that coveted RHD.
  17. I read this article too, when it came out... so what he said was "i don't see any urgency to trade him until the deadline".. pretty much a normal chat about any future UFA from any GM ... pretty generic. Don't think this is, or should we take this as the gospel of what happens with Miller. You also have to consider these were sound bites taken from a discussion, if we don't have the context it's kind of silly isn't it? Question: Are you willing to trade Miller and if so when would you do it " we have to get the best return we can" "there is no urgency until the trade deadline". Aren't these automatics? Here's the article: Again what else is supposed to say. It's going to be pretty fluid until it isn't anymore: Canucks won't feel pressure to deal Miller until 2023 NHL Trade Deadline Would 'have to get the best return we can' if they can't re-sign forward, Vancouver president says by Kevin Woodley / NHL.com Independent Correspondent July 15, 2022 Facebook Share Twitter Share Link Share Email Share The Vancouver Canucks won't feel pressure to trade forward J.T. Miller until the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline approaches, president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford said Friday. Speaking on "Donnie & Dhali -- The Team" on CHEK television, Rutherford pushed back on the idea of growing impatience surrounding the future of Miller, who led the Canucks in points (99) and assists (67) and tied Elias Pettersson for the Vancouver lead in goals (32) last season. The 29-year-old can become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Rutherford said the Canucks are trying to re-sign him but said it won't be easy to match Miller's contract expectations. "I'll state the obvious: It can go two ways," Rutherford said. "We can come to an agreement and keep him and we have a very good player. That's always difficult to do when a player is heading to free agency within a year and he's got really good numbers, so of course what the player is expecting in the way of a contract compared to the team is usually different." If the sides can't agree on a contract, Rutherford said the Canucks will trade Miller, but there wouldn't be pressure to do so for a while. "If [trying to sign him] doesn't work, we have to get the best return we can for him," Rutherford said. "But I think when the impatience should come on J.T. Miller is when we get closer to the trade deadline, and if we don't have him signed at that point, making sure that we get a return for him. But I don't see where there's any urgency until we get to the trade deadline." Top 5 J.T. Miller Plays from the 2021-22 Season 02:05 • July 5th, 2022 The Canucks improved their forward depth, speed and penalty-killing with the free agent additions Wednesday of Ilya Mikheyev, who signed a four-year contract; Curtis Lazar, who agreed to a three-year contract; Andrei Kuzmenko, who signed a one-year contract; and Dakota Joshua, who agreed to a two-year contract (financial terms not disclosed). But they hope to bolster a defenseman group that remains unchanged from last season, when Vancouver (40-30-12) missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons. Besides adding help at defenseman, Rutherford has talked about wanting to create more space under the NHL salary cap, and both could be accomplished by trading Miller, whose contract has an average annual value of $5.25 million. Since being acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 22, 2019, Miller leads Vancouver in goals (74) and points (217) and is tied with defenseman Quinn Hughes for the team lead in assists (143). Because of the term left on his contract, he has been mentioned in trade rumors since the lead-up to the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline on March 21. "What are they impatient about?" Rutherford said when asked about concerns that the sides haven't agreed on a contract. "We have our best forward we still have in our lineup. What's the impatience for?" On Wednesday, when the free agent market opened, Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said they would be happy to have Miller to start the season. "Well, I didn't get any calls today," Allvin said. "Hey, he was our best player last year. I think Jim mentioned there has been teams kicking tires, checking in. It hasn't gone much further than that. We're really excited to have J.T. here for another year. I believe he's excited and ready to come back, and who knows, anything could happen over the next couple of weeks, months, but we're happy to have him back." The Canucks are facing a similar situation with center Bo Horvat, who can become an unrestricted free agent after this season and whose contract has an AAV of $5.5 million. But Rutherford sounded more optimistic about getting an extension done with him. "These things will pick up with some of the guys we're trying to get signed like Horvat now that we're through the [2022 Upper Deck NHL] Draft, through the initial part of free agency, but clearly he's a guy we want to be with the Canucks for a long time." Rutherford said. "He's the captain of the team. This should be his team going forward, and hopefully we can get something done sooner than later." Facebook Share Twitter Share Link Share Email Share Edit: Read what NHL.com wrote... "they will trade Miller" Because JR said "we'd have to get the best return for him". Also if you've played poker well he's doing that. He's setting boundaries. In the media. As well as letting the team and Miller know to expect changes possibly. I can paste some articles too, on why Miller won't get traded if it isn't before the season starts if you like,
  18. No we aren't. It's a pickle aGENT. Right now we should be in the early part of our prime cap place "contending window"... we kind of are ok but we both know it's not enough. I think maybe we should get off the Miller stuff and go to the Brock stuff lol. Miller .. fine for 6 years i'm cool with that but not at much over 8. Add some tax stuff we are over 9.... so ... back to the big pickle that I won't stop bringing up until any CAN team wins a cup. Miller is important but his importance has gone a little out of whack on this thread. Maybe we can all have a good laugh one day (let's hope so!) and it becomes the new "Burrows do we really need him?! " thread. Hard not to like the way he plays and the guy personally isn't it? Ugh...dog days of summer. What a slog.
  19. Maybe i missed the memo, but i don't re-call one time Allvin or JR said "we can't let Miller walk away for nothing"... all I remember, was a good old fashioned dig on JB, soon after JR taking over which paraphrased was " this TEAM can't afford to let UFAs leave for nothing", and since then it's been a lightning rod for pro trade Miller camp. Surprised Horvat fear hasn't emerged yet ... but just for fun why not worry about that too? His family lived in ONT and TO is awfully close to losing their love affair with both Tavares and Mathews ... a better option in Horvat would solve a lot of things - and OTT for sure would love to add him and can afford him, have a glut of guys they could trade to fit him in. Just teasing you and i could have picked someone else instead to make a point so please don't take it personally, everyone (yours a lot more then some lol) on this site has value to it and like looking at all the angles including the devils advocate. And maybe i missed something, don't listen to every presser. For sure he's going to look like a bit of a hypocrite if he doesn't sign or trade him. But i'd rather he didn't sign him then screw us with a totally ridiculous contract. That's a LOT better then NOTHING. Especially if it means playoffs too. We do need to trade him before the season ... or the CDC could become insufferable and i love this part of my day(s) lol.
  20. Thing is, "contention window", one of them could be considered as right now (for better or worse). That's the unfortunate reality. Brock, Demko, QHs, EPs maybe Podz ... with some good support guys etc. I don't think anyones saying Miller's next deal will age well (well a couple posters who couldn't debate it really, Miller isn't going into the HHOF unless he does his best Howe / Bower impression) ...but it does it actually fit that bad with his particular window? (QHs and EPs first one)... As does Horvats. I highly doubt EP is ready yet, or that a 8-8.5 x 6 year deal hurts us that much either (not much point in debating that one yet what it could be and what it should be etc , a lot still depends on this season, and next off season market and overall cap situation, and yes taxes in BC vs Dallas etc ...) Have always had big doubts whatever Miller gets will move the needle much for a couple seasons anyways. It's a tough to predict. Sure wasn't Schnieder, Chytill and a first lol (and said it at the time several times, trying to use humour even to get that across). If done right there will be two windows or just one very long one. I'm ok with that. We won't ever be in a position to load up like 15 US teams can, six can afford an extra Stamkos or Kucherov or a couple Millers. That's a huge competitive disadvantage to VAN, OTT, TO and MTL especially. Your absolutely correct, best case Miller gains us for the future ... that future however, for me at least, is in serious doubt without him the next two years anyways. Play to a teams strengths isn't a bad thing. Right now that is forward depth (down the middle especially, a lot of C/W's available) ... very stable goaltending. Not so sure how management is leaning they've done their job in keeping their lips tight, and a few comments, without proper context added, definitely isn't tipping a hand. And it's extremely fluid. Lundkvist and a first lol... Rathbone is a better player right now by a large margin. Sure maybe that could change (but the point is, Rathbone is a better player right now and the year before as well)..so Miller for a bag of pucks. Allvin would have been burned for that deal and rightly so. Don't see how that's good for a team, taking their best player and trading for a B level D prospect and a late first just because it's "better then nothing". And won't ever see it that way. I'm totally happy with Millers value just being a good season, and some valuable playoff experience. Would go a long way in decision making next off season. Playoffs rarely follow a script, and some guys surprise, others just do their job and some disappoint. That's the team i want management to work with. Maybe this season we can do both (trade Miller and have a post season). Down the stretch this team was scary good. Not fooled by that either. But am curious if they can take steps on that and do it through the entire season. And if they can can't wait to see how many posters on this site are on the "keep Miller for the post season!" bandwagon - go for it! be buyers etc lol. Capwise - i know JB buggered it pretty good, but our best chance really should be this season. Virtually our entire core is on their second deals.
  21. Wow. Edit: There we're those that wanted to trade the Sedins prior to their last contract. HHOFers...what sort of haul would have one or two of the twins got us? With retention. Surely that was a bigger "mistake" ... or maybe not trading Naslund? Miller is good ... but he's not that good. And for all the pages on this thread, there are thousands more lamenting the JB era (well, in large part because we didn't get much for our vets)... Sure some might be pretty upset about it. Are folks still distressed about the Sedins? Or that only Kesler was willing to waive when he still had value? What about Jovo? That stung. At least he went on to play a long career in the desert and captain that team ... he could have stayed and been our C. Like it or not, JR has his number, Miller his, and we have a season to play out before that decision is made. Worst case is actually a bad trade, with guys we end up wasting cap space on - not that i'm worried about that but it's part of the risk, and then QHs and Demko say see you later and EP pulls a PLD/MT. No point worrying about this. Pretty sure JR will stick to his guns as in "this team can't afford to let UFAs walk for nothing" ... Impossible to know for sure. Feels like the worry is amping up to pretty bad levels over things we can't control at times on here, and once the puck drops, and if Miller is here still, we should at least be prepared for the chance that he does sign somewhere else and is kept on the team for the postseason. At least we have him for that, Horvat too. What bugs me more is our tax situation, that's the worst thing that's happened since the orca, and expansion.
  22. It's not likely the best case scenario, but it happens often enough. It's up to Miller if he wants to stay here or re-sign, and management and the market/other teams if a trade makes sense. It's definitely "nothing in return" in these cases, it's a run and a chance at the cup plus experience or whatever depending on the team. There is value in insulating EP for one more season ... other intangibles, like for example the good things Podz had to say. Leadership and vets are there to help the younger players get what it takes in this league so they can aspire to emulate it. St. Louis did this for Stamkos all those years ago. Ideally we win the cup that's a stretch obviously. But bet that a lot of fans warm up to the idea of a nice showing IF we get 107-110 points / top 8 team ... guess we will find out either way.
  23. Lol. Not sure what your actually reading. Showing that there are advantages to 3 different scenarios with Miller .... Funny stuff. Maybe if we all jump up and down and throw a tantrum we will get what we want.
