[Signing] Penguins re-sign Evgeni Malkin
IBatch replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
You just never do know. Zuckerberg ugh no thanks he's a cap dump for sure. Garland for Marino is a decent hockey trade ... maybe we could take on Zucker IF Dickinson goes the other way too. He was decent in Dallas - out of all those new faces, i expected Dickie not to be a problem personally...just needs to score 25 points and do his thing defensively and he's a good player in the bottom six. Never bought into the center idea at all though. -

How many games would you get for practicing your best golf drive with a goalie stick, right to the soft spot in the back of the shin these days?!!! I'm guessing at least 5 games ... Hextall lol. What a goon! -

Yep. HHOFers ... The cap hit makes up for the number of games he will actually play ... and going in and out of the LTIR like he seems to do lol, gives them flexibility to add rentals at the TDL and play way over the cap is definitely now a tactic lol. -
(Rumour) CGY Gaudreau seeking 10mill+ per year on new deal
IBatch replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Nah. If this is true... -
Imagine a world where you got that sort of certainty and that sort of pay whether your produced or you didn't. Do think this is a major issue. So many guys over the years have a "career year" and then slide into crappola. There should at the very minimum, be some sort of recourse for the league to correct these deals. Get seniority but come on. It's not government, in the real world your produce or your out. If your not hungry - well you lose your edge. It's also why pre salary disclosure we got the best hockey. Gainey and his vet pal sitting in the locker room we're willing to move mountains to keep their jobs (and said as much). You should always reward production and penalize the other route. The NHL product has taken a few jolts over the years. Don't at all mind the players getting paid properly. But sure remember the years they also took advantage of it as well, it led to the lockout. Most fans were sympathized with the owners by then.

I do think they are at least one year off. Edit: aside from Friedman, most of these ideas i've floated with my hockey pal ... and this is one of the subjects we've discussed as well so thanks for the addition (added it to the poll). Know it's a business, but the bulk of the NHLPA would also benefit from reducing length of contracts. Most of the escrow is a result of free agents. As an aside, it's been floated for years by THN that the best value is always the second contract. Where things get hairy is paying 3rd contract money (which has slowly crept in the past decade or so, because of well "great value") for 2nd contracts. I hope they can find a happy medium.

[Report] Cody McLeod announces retirement
IBatch replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
Don't make them how they used too. Don't know what to say, they don't make them how they used too. What's tough about the current state of the NHL is evolving with the times. Wilson and Reaves lol. Used to pick on Lucic too. Because he'd rarely go with a real brute...and once he did and called the linesmen in as soon as he got in trouble think it might have been Orr. The sport isn't at all, what it used to be, for better or worse / married to it anyways. Milbury must be freaking out. Was "pansification" this "pansification" that during a pretty rough era still. Talking to some of my peers - it's close to womens hockey already (and no slight on that we also love womens hockey!) skill is great and it's great skills finally coming back. But let's be real does anyone miss a bench clearing brawl every now then? Nope. Good luck McLeod! -
Quebec Aces ... Beliveau was so cherished by the Habs that they bought the franchise just to get him onto their team. Only Wayne Gretzky and Patrick Roy as individual players - made such an impact. Funny thing about Roy, Hall was the first one to do the butterfly... Gretzky merged the two leagues because the NHL couldn't fathom losing anymore talent. NHL lost every court case against the WHA and deserved too. Couldn't beat them in a court mandated tourney lol. Losing Gretzky and Ken Linesman case was the final straw the owners bucked up and did the right thing. WHA was bleeding money at that point. Gretzky really should be asking for royalties from half the league right now lol. US expansion and the WHA merger.
-
Johnny Bower gets overlooked a lot. His age was always a mystery despite having 300AHL wins... and 300NHL ones. WHA also a pro league - i wouldn't at all be apposed to making a column for total pro points. Ovi ... well know it's exciting to see if he can catch Gretzky ... adding another 54 or so 17 year old WHA goals probably puts it out of reach. Possibly Hulls and Howes pro goals as well.

TO has their own competitive advantages. We saw this with Tavares. And we saw it with Spezza. And Thornton. And will maybe see this with Horvat and other homegrown ONT players. So does MTL! I brought this up when defending the Swedish connection we have in Vancouver. There has always been players willing to play in TO... and MTL. Because that's where the majority of Canadian hockey players come from. We didn't get Sakic or Yzerman (I wasn't born far from where Yzerman was!) and didn't even get Ferraro. They've got a massive pool of guys who've already made their millions, just waiting to come play for them. Forever is the same about the NYR. And that's not going to change. Despite them also having jock tax similar to CALi. If you don't think Vancouver doesn't have a disadvantage in this respect - i think your missing the point.

Or if you'd like to see some Cali i've already mentioned them - they pay about 4.5% less tax then we do ... look it up. And the Alberta teams pay less. But marginally so. Enter an Annual Salary Please enter an amount equal to or above the league minimum salary of $700,000. Get this calculates the cities they play in given their divisions as well. To me this reads "5.5" in CALo is like 5.3 in Vancouver more or less. Yes CAli and NY teams pay similar tax rates as Alberta teams which i've mentioned already. Within a couple points anyways. After them there is a massive drop. Down to 42, then down to 36.64. You can take a horse to water ...

(Rumour) CGY Gaudreau seeking 10mill+ per year on new deal
IBatch replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Of course he'd decline! Why wouldn't he stay in COL? He's not staying there now though. And IF Johnny Hockey chases the money, like most UFAs, Kadri getting paid more then he's worth in one place isn't any different then the other place. Is he? Not saying this is going to happen. We could do the exact same thing in Vancouver. Trade Miller (COL is a good landing spot...one of many really) and sign Kadri instead. Makes some sense for us too, gain some assets, plug a hole. All it would cost us is Pearson, and using something to dump Dickinson from the Miller trade or futures we already own. -

(Rumour) CGY Gaudreau seeking 10mill+ per year on new deal
IBatch replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I've been beating this drum for almost a decade now. Well known? Not so sure. Have seen more bring it up since Friedman talked about it last off season (one of the reasons UFAs don't look at Canadian cities - the other two - the fishbowl and the covid rules!) ... at least now it's gaining some traction. Go back two years on this site - not many even responded. At least their is some early adoption now. About 7-9 years later. Not saying your not aware, but do feel that is a major issue, and one that us as stakeholders can start pushing. The more it's talked about, and promoted... well not saying we can do sh!t about it - but surely a player or two bringing it up absolutely could start some change. The NHLPA could greatly benefit from it. They are the ones that actually lose or make money depending on where they land. -
Disclaimer - haven't done this before so if it comes up messed up - i will fix the polls! Not great at this stuff lol. Hi CDC. First off thanks to any and all participants. IF this thread gets some noise I will add other polls later (add your own ideas!) - meant as an open discussion too! This is the best sport in the world and want it to stay that way. Get that every team has its own competitive advantages as well, ours is our Swedish connections for better or for worse and well Vancouver is one great city! A gem. That leads into my first poll item. During the JB era something special occurred (not his doing lol!) and it's absolutely worth further exploration in the cap era. Having watched the league absorb the WHA and expand to 21 teams ... well it was a treat to say the least. Back then most teams made the playoffs. Now? Well too many clubs are missing them for 6-11 years. In a row. Should be 3-5! at most....no Not hard to imagine why. 32 teams. Cap. That stuff. It's absurd that teams don't get a post season for that long(er!). If one thing good happened during covid was stumbling onto the bubble. Given how close the middle group of teams are any given year (MTL is a testament to that, as is maybe St. Louis, and i'd even debate LA - at best a mediocre regular season team ... that won a cup missed then won another cup!) ... that we forego the traditional system and make the play-ins permanent. Either that or retraction. It's good for the league, great for the fans and great for the players. To do this cull back to a 78-80 game regular season. Normal during the Howe/Gretzky era. They were onto something, and let it go. Expansion 100% needs to stop as a minimum, teams shouldn't be winning one cup on average and one other final appearance every 32 years or so. It's ridiculous. I'd actually be in favour of retraction (will add that to the poll). The 2000's were unbearable for a lot of reasons, mostly because the talent level was so thin ... at least it's catching up now. 32 teams - can't expand from there ever, even with 20 teams getting at least a play-in or first round! I'd even be ok if the first round goes back to 5 games ... CAR - a decade before a playoff again ... Buffalo what is it 11 now! EDM a final appearance then one early McDavid chance over almost 20 years. People complain about a 7th overall finish with post peak Sedins and a bubble over 8 years. Well ... it could have been worse lol. Bring in the play-ins!! League would also make more money with the extra round, because hope will always keep butt's in seats. Plus the play-ins basically can charge playoff rates too. win win win for all. Sure stats might go out the window - but just make an extra column for play-ins no biggee - exactly what the league should also be doing with goalie SO wins and OTL wins and OTL losses (put them into the tie column). Second change: This something that really grates on me. Because i'm a Canadian and even though we love to hate our rivals, let's face it, i'd like to see our country do well rather then watch a team in the US skate around with the cup year after year after freaking year. I was around 20 when MTL won in 93 and watched every single game that post season. It was a ritualized thing at the home i was living at. Full confession, which is ironic, i was actually rooting for LA over TO and MTL. Because well it was Wayne Gretzky vs the world back then, and Mario had taken away some of his early days steam. Cherry pretty much wanted to sleep with Gilmour the way he talked about him and that team lol - was stoked when Gretzky had one of his best games and put them down. Now i'm glad Roy did what he did. Only other goalie i've seen do what he did was Hasek and Tim Thomas. That's it. No freaking way did i believe at all, that it would be 30ish years without seeing the cup back in Canada after the 70's and 80's. If i did i'd have cheered every Roy save! Get that good old Canadian boys win cups in the US - but it's not the same. And now the cap's structure puts all but maybe the Alberta teams at a distinct disadvantage whenever an RFA comes up, or if you go to free agency as well. Why? Well six teams tax at 36.64...most US teams are between that and the very low 40's. Aside from Cali and NY teams which at least are around Alberta's 47.6 ish. On the highest end is where we sit at 53.07%....ugh Same with Ontario and Quebec. That's a massive difference. Every single team needs UFAs to make it work. And trades. COL had six drafted players ... and that included Byram and Newhook. That's it! Pay around 40.6%. Imagine if we had the dough, to have an extra 10% bump in our cap! Sure would help wouldn't it? What i'm suggesting is the league changes things to the mid line. Penalizes the six teams with no state tax. And rolls it back for the higher taxed teams to around 45%. If it's going to be fair let's make it fair. That's fair(ish). Any player that's traded gets a bump in salary or a reduction depending on where they go. Not terribly complicated. Can say, i'm sure that JT Miller would be happy to sign off on that given he's lost over 800k in salary every year he's played with us. I'm sure the NHLPA would back this idea...because it gives them cost certainty. The costs for accountants would be trivial. Don't even need them really - the calculators are available online to the public. What does that mean for us? A bump of overall cap around 91 instead of 83.5 next season. And what does that mean for TB? Well six teams vs 26... sorry too bad. Suck it up buttercup. Those "league friendly deals" will suffer some. As a whole the league would be better for it, and it gives the Canadian teams a chance actually to compete properly with the US ones. Sad that still the majority of the NHL is made up of Canadians. Finally i'd really encourage and like to see what other fans think about this. And more so what they have as far as ideas to improve the league. Think outside the box. But yes go ahead and make this fun too! Also going to add to the poll, just for hockey historians - make any game that's decided by the shoot out or OT put next to the tie column and next to every goalie that's played with OT etc - have in brackets how many wins they actually would have without the shootout and OT. That's a modest change that i believe needs to be added. 400 wins during the tie era is an incredible accomplishment ... like 340-360 under the current system.

Yep. Their window just is about to shut down a little. There is a way out of this - and that's to let him walk and overpay Kadri. Kadri actually matches their window better anyways. Which is maybe two years. -

Wow. Check out the difference in net pay if we offered the same here ... TAX CALCULATOR Enter your salary and then compare NHL teams tax rates. Or check out the chart below to see all of the NHL teams tax rates at your salary. Enter an Annual Salary Compare Taxes of Two Teams Seattle Kraken (36.64% x $10,000,000) $3,664,000 Vancouver Canucks (53.07% x $10,000,000) $5,307,000 Difference in Tax Paid $1,643,000 And here is CAL... Enter an Annual Salary Please enter an amount equal to or above the league minimum salary of $700,000. Compare Taxes of Two Teams Seattle Kraken (36.64% x $10,000,000) $3,664,000 Calgary Flames (47.66% x $10,000,000) $4,766,000 Difference in Tax Paid $1,102,000 So we'd have to offer close to 12 to match (higher we go to make up the difference, higher we have to go - it's not just adding the 1.643 difference!) , they'd have to offer around 11.4. Crazy but true! The league needs to step up and modify the CBA to help make Canadian teams relevant again. At least the Calgary teams have low provincial taxes (smart - drives business), but 53% vs 36.64 is a massive divide. These "team friendly deals" in low state tax teams, aren't so different then places like TO who "overpaid" their gems. Not once you take this into consideration. The average US team is around 40%. Only the NY and CALI teams compare to the Alberta teams. Vancouver - well when have taxes ever "rolled back"? Used to be identical with Alberta - which isn't terrible just not great. Vancouver, TO, OTT and MTL all pay 53%...also we used to be on par with CAL/EDM even a tiny bit less, it's no coincidence that was during the peak Sedin era and before that too. Ugh. JB dealt with this (and when our team sucked), and Allvin is going to have to deal with it too. Miller. He says all the right things. Maybe he owes us too for giving him the chance to play first line minutes (and he has mentioned this more then once - how grateful he is for the chance to do that!), and is willing to leave 1.5 or so on the table to re-sign with us. So far, his wallet is over 800k lighter every season since he was traded from TB. If he signs with us for anything less then 8.5 - we should all be sending him thank you cards, that's like 7.3 or so in six US states ... surprise surprise, all but Seattle and Dallas could be considered very good to contender teams. -
See my above post. Let dough faced boy enjoy his "i've made a lot of money" routine somewhere else. Glad they past on him for the 100 greatest players all/time. Mogilny was better as was Bure and Federov.
-
For anyone who forgot this is the POS that made Mitchell barely remember 8 months of his life, and probably cost us the cup - i for sure don't. Hard pass. Might as well be talking about Duncan Keith coming here instead. Also a hard pass. With Mitchell in our lineup instead of Ballard...we'd have for sure won a cup.

[Proposal] Vancouver -Nashville Trade [Proposal]
IBatch replied to WEVEGOTMOTTE's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
NSH for sure is a team that could re-sign Miller at a cap hit around 8 given no state taxes. So a good fit. Their window is also right now ... Josi and Forsberg in their primes etc. I don't hate this but don't like it either... means it's probably in the fair range, but don't like it. Our "prize" for Miller in this scenario, is Fabbro. The first will certainly be a very late one, so might as well call treat it like a second. Johansen isn't a player i'm fond of ... maybe if we didn't take that cap dump. I'd much rather pay Miller 9.5 for the next three years, then his salary. Way more bang for your buck. That extra 1.5 is going to get you, up to 30 points. Anyways maybe your onto something. Why not Miller and Dermott for Fabbro and their first? That's something i'd consider. We'd need to go to free agency this summer to shore up our C depth. But our right side would be better. Id rather go after Manson. He's a modest upgrade on Tanev. Bigger, meaner, faster etc. And then clear the cap we need to have him on our blue line the next five years or so. Myers, in this case would like to keep him too. It would give our team a legit chance this year to get a good sample size in the playoffs. Our PK would go way up ... our PP last year the last 25 games or so was tops in the league. The cost to do this might be Pearson (Kuzmo now so it's mitigated), burying Poolman and a cap dump with Dickinson. -
proposal Vancouver-Anaheim and LA
IBatch replied to cowboy644's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
All i'm going to say is - aside from Kesler (and that was one of two teams), who else have we ever traded to a divisional rival that moves the needle at all?. Not saying it's not possible because yes anything's possible (Gretzky trade - but that was also pre-cap).. Any proposals that include Miller, should be outside our own division, if not the other conference to have any chance of occurring. Aside from that once in an almost half century sort of odds. Used Edmonton as an example before...Steve Staois ... remember him? Well he barely played with us, wouldn't be much different then trading Burroughs to EDM this trade deadline really. Sure he became decent (and i liked him while he was here too), but believe that just might be the best player we've ever traded to the Oilers. CAL? Well a second for Bear. Those types of deals ... are what we should expect from our own division, and usually only happen when one team is on a different cycle, so at least you got that right, but as mll pointed out, going the wrong way with ANA (it would be us trading for a mediocre vet - and them getting our picks). It's not just us - but other divisions do it too. Habs and Bruins. Bruins fans are still mad at the Dryden trade, which just happens to be the most lopsided one in league history. A top 5ish goalie all-time, for three guys that never played a game. Boston lost a cup as a result, and a dynasty as well (one against Dryden lol, his rookie year, with a bad habs team that wasn't even supposed to make the playoffs ... that's how good Dryden was). GMs aren't going to risk getting burned like that. JB ... well sure looked silly not trading some of his vets in exchange for the bubble. Edler going to LA and the crew going to CAL both made him look bad. And those weren't trades. Another reason GMs should consider getting their soon to be UFAs, to a team far far away. IF JB did this instead, decent odds at least some of them would have re-signed with that team. Oh and BTW, TT is the best player i can re-call in a trade from LA, a rental. Again a team rebuilding to a team who already rebuilt for four years. LA traded Muzzin and Pearson (PIT) and probably others too ... out of conference. As for the return...ugh. Pass. -
I really like Garland so this would be a tough one. PLD ... does that mean ... this secretly IS a Miller thread! Wow that C depth .... We'd have one year of something special for sure. I agree our PK needs help, and that starts with better defensive players. I'm still hoping we can make a trade (anytime this summer), and make a pitch for Manson. Won't cost us anything but cap (hello Myers?). Garland for sure has value...he's also important to us given Brocks new contract and future. This is a well thought out and good thread, I like the guys your targeting. I also agree we don't have to be so concerned about the right side IF we do something to upgrade our PK somewhere else. Rathbone i believe has a good chance to make the NHL as a Stetcher type (at least, with a shot to also be a PMD that moves the needle, a solid third pairing PP specialist) ... too bad he doesn't play the right side.
