The Current Construction of the Vancouver Canucks
IBatch replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Canucks Talk
Obvious how? Playstation? Don't want to pick on anyone but it takes two to tango. First off a Miller deal in Vancouver is a bad deal to 75% of the league, and a crap deal to 6 teams down South. 53% tax. His value goes way down as soon as we sign him. These guys absolutely take this into their bargainings (including Brock just recently). Why would PIT let Marino go for Garland? Garland for sure has value but isn't this the same thing as just making a problem to solve a problem they can't just do with Malkins cap? Like keep Marino and do something else instead. This seems like a CDC think tank gone haywire. I've seen all these things suggested a few times. But it's far from simple. Whatever we do get - i hope it's going to work out. That's about the best we can expect. -

Well let's give then another 6 years ... that's the average these days - one cup, one bridesmaid every 32 years ... and that's actually very decent given we don't have a fair cap system. -

I'd say, that this is still 95% JB's team, and to expect some changes. They wouldn't go through that much front office stuff just to ice basically the same team would they? Don't think so. Sure new coach.....but still that's also a staff change not a player change. -
Some fans are patient. Our fanbase deserves to have impatient fans. All types inbetween are acceptable. That said send most your complains to Bettman for expanding the league and creating a salary cup that screws our teams over. 32 teams. 36.4-53% tax brackets.

[Rumour] Predators shopping Filip Forsberg
IBatch replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Adam Fox sure did something nobody predicted. Rathbone is a little bigger then QHs and actually very strong for a little guy, but i do worry about running a side that size. As for Forsberg - the deal we'd have to make to pull this off would be astronomical cap wise. NSH low state tax plus an 8 year deal on the table...I'd bet the take home pay for that offer means we'd be looking at a double digit pay for 7 years. I'd rather try and sign Miller for 5-6 then go there. -
Best part about working outside or in construction, your rarely in a spot you can't just let one rip... unfortunately, the crop dusting skills office workers gain I don't have. So i'm fun at social events too.

Facts are facts, he played more games in the NHL then most guys picked 23ish overall and beyond ever do. Not a gem that's for sure, but he did make it. Sens lineup is loaded with younger and probably hungrier players. One great season for us anyone playing 12:00 minutes a night, 33 points in 59 games ... the rest? Too bad. JB only late pick that had any traction. Tough to believe that we'd have to go back to 2004 to find a couple great later picks, and a 3rd rounder isn't that late either. Hansen though ... Hope Allvin can start fixing that gap.

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brock Boeser
IBatch replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
As for Brock - just like aGENT and others who spent a considerable time saying we needn't worry about his QO ... it came to pass. It's a fair deal...at this cap hit Brock scoring 60ish points would be enough to really help the team and push up his value. JR/Allvin did exactly what they said they would as in offer him a 2/3 year deal. And of course it wouldn't come in more then his QO offer in this case. One year of UFA bought, and puts him at 11th highest paid RW (for now, others will get paid during his contract and bump him down). It also puts the onus on him to perform...like we know he can, and puts him in a position to cash in with cap going up his final year, likely quite a bit. It's a fair deal. Given our taxes it's actually more like 22nd take home too. -

And Nonis's too...bringing in Schneider plus one of the best drafts in club history , no second rounder that had already been traded - then Edler (last 3rd rounder ... 2004 wow we've had make an impact), Brown who played quite a few games with us and Hansen Plus of course he traded for Luongo. Might have been some others later but those guys also were a key part in Gillis's team. Nonis had a raw deal having to wait until Burke's cap ran out, was replaced and the hero Gillis went out and offered Sundin 20 million over two years! Crazy really. Gillis was great at cap management and keeping Nonis and Burke's team together. And making it a pro org from top to bottom...all 3 deserve credit for that team. But yes Burke and Nonis assembled it. -

Really screwed everyone with his insurance policy ... saving money early but making it impossible to get out of later and of course all that savings was used to build a spare room for Booth and Ballard (instead of Mitchell lol and some window dressings to hide the bars in the windows)... Luongo's room, man he loved it for awhile ... but those bars which he picked out too (part of the insurance policy) can just see his sullen face poking out between them when everyone starting hanging out in Schnieders room more. At least his room is finally getting sub-letted after being vacant for, what is it now? 4 years? Got hit hard for not building it to code, finally up to code and gets to he used again. Bet it smells for awhile yet in there too. -
Think they need to stick to the bar they've already made. They would lose room fast (HHOF is a remarkable place ... hope all fans get a chance to go there when they can, not a fan of big cities (but love visiting them, NY was a lot of fun!) , but when i go to TO that's my first destination, it's smaller then you'd expect maybe!)... unless they went into parts of the building that is designated for change each year. Less then half their stuff is out at one given time...been there once when they were honouring the Habs and wow the things they could put on display. They do a decent job of respecting other hockey from around the world, but it's for sure an NHL museum first and foremost. You'd have to be a master to see the difference between the actual cup, and the replica. Last time was maybe 7-8 years ago ... almost time to go check it out again - having the Sedins honoured, and Luongo, I can't wait to see what their piece of glass on the wall with their picture says...
-
That was really cool. One thing that was expressed by Mike with both twins was how highly everyone spoke of them, regarding their off ice work in the community (both were just as good as that as they were on the ice), and how that was a key criteria in getting guys into the HHOF. I'd argue Alfie should have gone in first ballot though under the same criteria, his work in the OTT area was at least on par with the Sedins.... This explains some things when it comes to guys like Theo, Mogilny, Barrasso, and probably others aren't in. Harvey was snubbed for his drinking, when they put him in he was a no show as a result. Enjoying Lanny's comments about trying to score on Luongo in the 2004 worlds lol. And how that just didn't work out for him. What an honour for those guys, much deserved, and what a great time to be a Canuck fan as well. First ballot for all 3 guys just goes to show how much they were loved on and off the ice. A lot of excellent players had to wait, some a long time. Think it was their off ice work that put them into first ballot territory ... 75% at least agreed to this. Like their process.

(Rumour) Ryan McDonagh TB soon to be traded
IBatch replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Well at least some one is paying attention. What is going to happen is we have watched the king killed. And they despite no state taxes are going to have to pay the piper... it won't be much tax but it will cut a little. -

IBatch replied to RWJC's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Imagine being in his shoes ... after all those playoff series and being an important part of their cups and their regular seasons...and then been asked to waive. This isn't really a story - just Friedman. If i had 31 one (will it be 32 soon?!!) thoughts and felt the certain demographic would hold on to my every word .. i guess i'd be busy trying to make sh!t up all the time too. That's all he's doing. Wonder if he regrets it. (Friedman of course...nah i'm sure he gets most his ideas in the middle of the night or when he's doing his morning poop) ... yes he's the "number one " insider - and some of that actually matters, but most of it i've seen some CDCer do a better job of on the trade proposal threads. -

Fixed it for you! -
To me McDavid isn't yet at the same level Sakic and Yzerman were ... but he's making a good case for himself to be on par with them or maybe ahead...Going to have to wait and see what the second half of his career looks like first. Stastny, Hawerchuk even Lafontaine... Difference is he's just the best there is right now. Maybe he is the modern Orr, Gretzky, Mario ... Crosby vs McDavid is also an interesting debate.
-
That's the one ... Doubt we will see a inductee class like Coffey, Borque and Murphy for a very long time...two of the top five D's all-time plus a guy who was just awesome off the hop and Mr consistent throughout his career. It was nice to see them all go in at the same time given their careers started so close to each other. Al Mac, Stevens, Messier and Francis was the one i was thinking about too. Tough to beat that class. It's also a good example of how all classes are not created equal. How many guys got their 3 year's waived? Gretzky for sure. Edit: 10 players according to a quick search. Which also indicates they no longer will be doing this...not sure they will hold to it IF someone is deserving. I'd argue both Crosby and Ovi might make that exception. Ovi if he passes Gretzky which he looks to do, and Crosby simply because you can't do one without the other lol. That said i'm not sure Crosby will play as long as Ovi did. The modern Howe vs Richard. Man it's sure nice McDavid is in the league. And equally if not more so Makar. There has been a lot of great players over the years...but we've been missing an Al Mac for years.
-
Those lockouts killed some guys careers for sure. And others suffered stats-wise. Sakic? Wouldn't he have another 80-90 points? Add the 1/2 year in 95 ... and well he'd be pushing 1800. Sundin would have 1450...Alfie probably 1350. Jagr ... well he'd have broke 2000 had he stayed instead and not lost that time either. Even Messier would have 1900 or so ... any of those guys who were at or above a PPG... Selanne ... add another 120 anyways...Mogilny 1/2 a year too.
-
No doubt. Not to mention that "weak" Gretzky finished his career in the dead puck era himself and did just fine. No redline! Can you imagine Gretzky and Bure on the same team during their primes today? They'd be putting up ridiculous numbers. Selanne is another example of a guy who's career was extended as result of the rule changes. The league simply expanded faster then they could find new players to fill some huge shoes.

Luongo did have his melt downs ... but usually responded with a great game after a loss. Actually think his best goaltending started 3 years before he became a Canuck, and he kept it up until around 2010. The Olympics i don't fault him for the late goal - Kesler was an absolute beast that game, best forward in the game IMO. Was simply all over us from his first shift to his last. Made some incredible saves - and that was another goalie duel because Miller was putting on quite the show himself. His stats for sure are bloated because he played so many games and for so long ... and the shoot-out (which he was never particularly great at but decent anyways) losses and wins should be calculated in the tie column. He'd still have around what Sawchuk had 420 or so wins. To me any goalie that breaks the 400 win column deserves the HHOF. Cujo is a massive snub. Came very close to winning some hardware, just had to compete against guys like Broduer, Belfour, Hasek, Roy etc ... not easily done, and aside from Hasek maybe wasn't on very good teams for most of it. To me the hardware and first second team all-star are important metrics, but there are just too many guys in the HHOF that never got any for guys like Cujo, Turgeon, Alfie, Sundin etc to be ignored. The bar had moved down a lot the past two decades. I don't mind they either. And despite it being called the Hockey Hall of Fame, the WHA guys really do get snubbed. Tonelli. Sure there are others. One thing that is going on now is will Ovi break Gretzky's record? Back in the six era time the NHL was after Bower forever ... they finally got him in his mid 30's. How many people know he's the only other goalie that has 600 pro wins? Same sort of thing. WHA counts ... NHL played a series against them and didn't win lol. Sure they both picked good teams ... Gretzky also scored over 50 goals in the WHA as a 17 year old lol... Hull scored 300 ... Howe also has over 900 pro goals...Gretzky still leads them both but not by much. NHL owns the HHOF don't they? I suppose that has something to do with that because well, they sure didn't like the WHA. Point to all of this is a lot of lines are blurred and some need to be acknowledged. Changing the game resulted in aging stars from the dead puck era getting one last hurrah. Zubov scored 71 or something as a 37 year old lol. Imagine that! After years of around 50... same guy who led NYR in 94 with 89 points. The dead puck era. Needs some acknowledgement, why i think Naslund eventually might be part of that. Vernon and Osgood should be in. Vernon won two cups as a starter for two different teams. CAL and DET. Also went to another final ... and a big part of that rivalry with COL, epic goalie fight, all 5'7" of him beat Roy lol. Osgood got a turn too (fighting Roy lol)....He was under the shadow a little but certainly got out of it in the late 2000's, he was incredible both runs. Sure he played on good teams too... but was also a great goalie himself. Saw Tim Thomas earlier. He's a pickle. But was an amazing goalie. Holds the record for most saves in a final and during a playoff. Hardware certainly helps his case too, even if we won that cup he was getting that regardless.
-
Absolutely wouldn't argue that ... for two years they were some of the best players on the planet. That's why they are getting in. I'm a little surprised they went in first ballot but suppose it makes sense given Luongo certainly is, and bringing them in together makes for a good class. As a fan im stoked ... Luongo/Turco series was the best goaltending i've ever seen in a single series ... How do you win a series when the other team gets 3 shutouts?!! Linden was the only guy that seemed to want to score on Turco lol, and he was almost wrapping up. It would either be that or let them all sit for a year and wrap up some oldies but goodies. Alfie to me was the better player anyways. Not just looking at the stat sheets, he really was an amazing player. No battle of Ontario without him that's for sure. Too bad he went to Detroit at the end but at least he wanted to try for a cup. Those two years were amongst the funnest to be a fan i've ever had ... the city/province was buzzing. Olympics ... it was something. Not all Harts/Art Ross/Norris/Selke's trophies are created equal that's for sure. Perry shouldn't have won that Hart ... THN actually uses that as example of why they aren't created equal and how sometimes they get it wrong. Ronnie Coleman won 8 Mr Universes in a row, if he wasn't around there were 2-4 guys that could have won any given year ...Gretzky did that, McDavid is doing it now kind of, and if Crosby didn't get concussed, he'd have done it too. The Sedins had 6 very good and two excellent seasons ... Alfie had two excellent seasons and 14 or so very good ones. Edit: We now have four guys who made it to the HHOF. All deserve to be there. Mogilny is the next one ... he's got to get in now. And it wouldn't surprise me to see Naslund made it one day either. The dead puck era was at its peak then, only guys like Bure (just prior), Jagr, Sakic, Sundin, Alfie, Yzerman, Forsberg, Hedjuk etc seemed capable of producing back then... Naslund was a 3 time first all-star - nobody else in team history has done that, and all consecutive. Sure LW makes it a little easier but nonetheless a great accomplishment. Pearson, almost a Hart and almost an Art Ross in the deepest darkest part of that era .. A fringe HHOFer anyways ...
-
Alfie scored 103 on a worse team ... and was a PPG or higher player six times .. and several of those season were in the dead puck era. Very close to a PPG every other season except for a couple after that team disbanded and he was almost 40. Really he was OTT equivalent of Sundin during the battle of Ontario which actually was a thing.. Really hard for me to say the Sedins were better players. Actually like most players, the lockout allowed his game to flourish .... at the age of 33/34 and beyond he rattled off 103 points good for tied for 4th (Thornton and Jagr had boffo seasons of course lol, also well new rules and all), 87 (34/35) 89 points (35/36), 74 points (36/37), 71 points (37/38) ... then his next four seasons didn't play nearly as many games but still got 59 age 39/40. During the dead puck era, he was a very good player but never at the top, much like Sundin as well (Sundin of course was a better player but not by a huge margin either). What did the Sedins accomplish at those same ages? Not as much, and really suffered off the hop in the same era Alfie played and played well. Both players went to the final... Alfie i think only won the Calder, Clancy and Messier award. Second team all-star. Not all eras are the same ... Alfie is yet another example of a guy who played much of his youth in a tougher era, and after the lockout saw a big bump in his stats. Of course Healtey and Spezza had something to do with that, but at the time it was an aging star anchoring what was the best line in hockey for about 3 years, the same way Naslund/Bertuzzi/Morrison were for about the same. The Sedins was the best line in hockey for 2 years. And Alfie scored more goals (444) and points then either twin (about 90 in 90 or so less games), playing the bulk of his career in the dead puck era. To me id say Alfie was actually the better player. His peak was almost as bright...and was solid from start to the last two or three seasons. The Sedins were solid for half of the career and amazing for two ... Sakic also scored over 100 points at age 37... those rule changes ... without them i'm pretty sure we wouldn't even have this thread at all.
-
Roenick maybe too. Kariya meant Mogilny should automatically get in really. Mogilny > the Kariya. At least most of his career. Mogilny, Federov and Bure were all different players with different attributes, but really tough to say one was actually better then the other. Federov of course got to play on the best teams...How would have Bure or Mogilny have done on them? Mogilny in NJ near the end of his career was a great team too. I agree Theo, Mogilny get in now. Alfie ... well we're the Sedins really any better? Alfie scored over 100 points when he was 34...one of only 10 guys to do that...
