What's just as nuts, was Gretzky's second thousand points came almost as quickly as his first. -

Even Bernie Nicholls had 1500 or so PIMs... not like he was a choir boy. -

In fairness, he followed up his huge season, with 75 points in 47 games, and another 37 points in 32 games for 112. Was also close to or a PPG player the rest of his career which included dead puck era years (94 was really the last year, after that it started). Moved around a lot for sure. Maybe the only knock on him was his minus, but when you look at the teams he was on when he was on them it wasn't too bad, at all really, LA, EDM and SJ scuttled it. When on decent to good teams he was in line with where it should be. Edit: He was also Gretzky's second line center .... that's a record that will never ever be broken. Malkin sure didn't do that. Or Messier. Or Francis. -

Very good point. Nicholls was for sure robbed of an automatic HHOF ticket when the owners/GM backstabbed him and sent him packing. Not sure what else you're supposed to do as a player, back then or any era, to feel safe enough to buy a house. He asked! And said they were rotten to tell him it's fine and give him assurance's, and then "whoopsie" see you later after. -

In other words, he's retiring. -
For a short period of time it looked like maybe Gaudette would be that guy, or Tree even more briefly. It's a sad state of affairs when you have to go all the way back to 2004. Edlers draft year. To find Edler and Hansen. Quin found quite a few guys. So did Milford. Six years of Burke got us Bieksa.
-
Brock counts too. Despite folks wanting more. Brock will for sure get another deal after this one...which will bring him into his 9th season (including one year of ELC getting burned). Far surpassing an average NHL career.
-
Maybe not sure id even go there. In five years he averaged 16:45 ice-time for us ... bottom pairing, Strudwick material. Minus the fighting.
-
Just remember that at the time we were drafting "the next Rob Blake". The underwhelming part was he wasn't really any better or worse than Jason Strudwick when playing for us. Who wasn't very good either. We kept waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting. Maybe we gave up on him too early. Guess at 4 just had some higher expectations. Ohlund was drafted four years before him ... Jovo was super young and doing it. Allen would have fit in that time bracket well for us if he came as advertised. At least he helped us acquire Luongo, but don't remember anyone being sad to see Allen go.

Hansen, Edler and Schneider were drafted by Nonis. In one draft. Also Brown. That's about the closest draft we can get to, as far as hits as Milford did. Nonis followed it up with 3 duds though, then 5 duds from MG, would have been 6 if he didn't trade Schneider. Burke might deserve the second place crown based primarily on his draft day gymnastics to draft both Sedins. The cost was McAbe, who actually went on to have a more than decent career. He was there for six drafts (same number as MG), and had a 4th, 2nd and 3rd overall to work with (JB apologists take notice ...) Allen and the Sedins. So good stuff. After that ... Ruutu, Umberger (screwed that up), Bieksa and Kesler. So in six drafts, he drafted very high twice nailed it 2 out of 3 times. HHOF guys. Kesler, Bieksa. meh. Check out Quin, it's a great list: Linden, Bure, Nedved, Ohlund, Cooke, Ference, Sopel, McAllister, Scatchard, Scheaffer, Mukalt, Walker, Peca, Aucoin, Cullimore, Stajanov, Antoski, Slegr, Odjick, Ward ... some of those guys I listed because of what it got us back - Naslund and Salo lol. Quin is on par with Burke, nobody is on par with Quin and trades though. Edit: Peca/Mogilny versus Kesler ... interesting debate. Peca on the WCE team would have been pretty great, IMO a better player then Morrison. Ohlund of course > Bieksa. Walker ... sure could of used him instead of Zezel lol...Burke wanted Walker and was pissed when Keenan demanded to protect Zezel instead, but it was his call and he did leave him unprotected. Went on to have a very decent career, especially given the way he played the game. Was the first big strike for Keenan. The WCE team could have looked a lot different, much tougher/ harder hitting too. Ference of course, became a thorn in our side later too. Nedved, well you could insert Hedican in there if you want. 38 goals third season, he was a very good player just not for us (other than 93). Hedican of course was just fine. Both him and Aucion went on to do some good things after the Canuck. Ward and Murzyn were the plus minus leaders (34 I think), until H. Sedin tied it or beat it by one (can't remember which).

Hit definition for the period of 1990-2010. Mid first round 200 games Second round 100 games. Thats actually a fair amount higher than the average. Considering only 50% of the 23-end of the second round make it to 100. Overall, the vast majority of all picks play at least one game no matter where they were picked. So that certainly isn't a hit. A bust can be defined like this: 1 700 games 2-3 600 games 4-6 400 games (JV was awfully close, not to being a bust). 7-10 350 games 11-15 300 games rest of the first round 200. Scouts expect to find a tweener at least, out of the second half of the first round, to end of second, although odds are they won't. That's just the first round. Overall, on average, a team finds 1.5 NHLers per draft. That meet or exceed their bust parameters. Shockingly only 1 is found on average from rounds 4-7, who plays 100 games or more, every 8.3 years. Same thing for the 3rd round. It shows that the bulk of the NHLers, come from the first two rounds. Something JB should be chastised for given where we were in the cycle. He actually ended up with one more first and one less second overall. But accrued extra seconds he used up, and of course traded away two future NHLers McAan and Forsling. Milford traded away 3 time 50 goal scorer Vaive. Williams was a fan favourite and was part of some tough teams including a run to the final. But still. One thing that makes the year the WHA merged so impressive, is a lot of teams were taking WHA stars in the draft who looked to be established stars. Ray Bourqe, likely wouldn't have been picked by Boston because their staff was high on another young WHA D..Siden said "you better know what your doing because Borque i've seen and he's going to be amazing"...they didn't have to make that choice because that guy was gone the pick before them. So the 79 draft was nuts. Oilers went on a run of drafting a bevy of HHOFers lol. One thing I can say about Milford, he hit on a ton of guys. But also missed out on some incredible talent as well.
-
Edler was drafted by Nonis. Burke had his blunders too. Allen at 4, and years where we didn't get anything. Bieksa, Kesler and the Sedins. Nobody had a four year run at the table like Milford did, the only thing that could be said about that was, we didn't get a HHOF out of it, but we sure got a lot of great players.
-
Messier just had two typical Messier seasons, 99 and 84 points (in 71 games the year before)...Adding to the disappointed. Of course his entrance blew up the lineup. If he only settled into the second line role, he took a different number (Brett Hull did, in honour of Konstantinov, who at the time of his accident, was a better D then Lidstrom and only played six years), fell in behind Linden and a team that was just approaching their primes and added to, not took away from the leadership group to help Bure sign .. well it was the biggest what if in our history. Breaking his leg didn't help, but that year he was trying to be the man....with a way worse supporting cast thanks to himself.
-
Not wanting it, but being deserving is like a multiplier of 3 in my books. Agree they don't have to rush it.
-
Would be nice though. I think Miller likely gets the nod if they went there, but the best part about that it can be surprising. Wish the players did this. The fanbase would for sure be fine with whomever their choice was.
-
Brock wins more puck battles on the boards then he loses. So good stat!
-
Early on he was easier to pin down. QHs is a lot better now. It's not like he will ever be Ray Borque. But he's going to be the best we've ever had.
-
Probably most points single playoffs by a rookie D. Only one I know of so far.
-
I'd be ok if they didn't have a Captain this year. But if they feel they need one, Hughes legacy is already started and we could do a lot worse, as is EPs. To me it's got to be Miller or QHs. If Schenn was re-signed with us, i'd fully support that. Did Horvat "embodie" that. Our media sucks. So kind of hope it's Miller, and he doesn't put his filter on all the time.
-
It's happened. Players put a name in a hat, it's tallied and sometimes it's not who you think. Who Captained the greatest Boston team ever? Was it Orr? One of the greatest ever. Or Espo? Also one of the best ever. No.

One of my favourite things about Mario's career, was whenever he came back he went right back to showing why he was a god amongst mortals. -

1987 was truly a pivotal series for Mario. He learned from Gretzky and Messier and others on that team what it would take to win a championship, and to take his game to the next level. It's one thing to play 78-80 games, it's an entirely different thing, to play in long OT playoff games and brutal series over and over again. One of the reasons I think a lot of the Islander guys, aside from Trottier, careers lost years, was a result of those 19 consecutive playoff rounds. It's also why I have Potvin right up there after Bobby Orr. A lot of those guys bodies just were beat to trash. After NYI won their last cup, Gretzky walked by their room and saw how exhausted they were, quietly celebrating. It was then that he realized what it was going to actually take to win a cup against them. Im not so sure they would have, if it wasn't their fifth final in a row. Edit: EDM fans might have actually helped them too. They found out what hotel they were staying in, and drove by all night honking their horns etc lol...trying to make sure they had no sleep. They also modified the series for some unusual reason. Can't remember why, but it gave EDM an advantage. In the end, it was pretty perfect that NYI passed the torch. -

Yes he sure did. And that puts him in the echelon for best seasons all-time by any NHL player. Was super disappointed when he was traded. Would have been great to see those two together for four or five more seasons.
