Yes it sure is ... for him and the team. Covid really threw a wrench in JBs plans. as did Ferland and his fiasco going into the bubble. Glad he's gone - shouldn't have ever been spending to the cap during a rebuild, especially near the end of it. It is what it is. As fans we need to brace ourselves for a re-set. I know how exciting it was in the bubble, and just making the playoffs to see what these guys can do now is extremely tempting given how well we played down the stretch. Played like a top 6-7 team in the entire league. That's a fringe contender. That said ... we simply don't have enough money for all these guys. We do next year yes. That's it though. Miller and Horvat combined will cost us 5 more at least. Means we lose Garland and play a Chiasson instead. Or something like that. Pearson plus another Pearson for two Chiassons etc. Added to that our lack of D prospects etc ... ouch. Im actually ok with just letting things play out next season. Because i know we are headed for some changes anyways. And really do want to see if we can go on a magical run. COL fans were nervous about having to play us in the first round if we made the last wild card spot. And rightly so. Expecting a little core ascension next year isn't unreasonable. You don't get a lot of chances with 32 teams these days. I'd be stoked to make the playoffs and THEN make the tough decisions. I'd also be ok with just pulling the plug and re-setting starting this draft. Feel that Brock is a wild card. He will either pull it together and earn another deal ... OR he's the guy that's traded just for a bag of pucks and the cap space.
-
You are correct and think you nailed it as well. But it might take one more deal after this one. I was using Dadanov as a comp. Who could also get another deal. But that was also a covid contract. 31 ... suppose it depends on his contract length, 32 by next years playoffs. A four year deal is probable. Your probably right 4 million x 5 years or 5 million x 4 seems doable. Dadonov was the comp i had in mind, got a 3 year deal at around the same age for 4 million, after a killer KHL career and 3 very decent NHL ones ... Given what he's done in Tampa this off season his stock probably goes up. So maybe 4 in Tampa bay, which equals 4.75ish in Vancouver, MTL, TO. I thought Palat was 32. That said 3.25 x 5 is the same as 4 x 5 almost anywhere else - so if it happens ... won't be shocked. Edit: Bettman said recently that they anticipate only two more seasons of flat cap plus one million to be made whole from covid. That's about one year ahead of schedule. Also means that contracts signed this summer will be adjusted based on term for that scenario. Two years of basically flat cap, and then back to normal operating procedure, cap increases of 5-10% each year. That also will have an impact on our team ... EPs next deal for one, same with whatever we do with Miller and Horvat, their agents will also be looking at that and pushing for increases. Days of reasonable contracts (Tyler Toffoli, Tanev, Pearson, Dadanov etc ... are about to change)... Was nice while it was available. I'd take a poke at Palat too considering he's a much better player then Brock and isn't going to cost the farm given his age. Brock is young but still has much to prove to earn his deal. His QO is league wide known as an issue. Mier's in SJ... wonder how the heck they get under that (only other grandfathered one that is a massive issue - believe it's 10!!! lol)... Covid affected Vancouver and SJ more then any other teams plans.

I don't really know. I suppose any trade is possible - but it's tough to say. It wouldn't surprise me if Miller is on the roster all year and then signs somewhere else. It would surprise me if we get PHI fifth overall but maybe it's doable. OTT is a decent trade target and have thought that for months. COL is too. For sure are in a win now ... one cup or two. Or whatever happens .. Kadri is too rich next season for them. I do doubt Miller goes to anyone in our division.
-
Yes. That's possible. But it is what it is. To me Miller just playing the season out and not re-signing with us is less risk then paying him 9.5 or more to stay for a few more years of his prime.. The timing just is off. You don't get a fifth overall for Miller anyways so it's a mute point. No way he's worth a second that's never going to happen.
-
It wasn't an actual "deal" ... nothing was reported ... just a bunch of suppositions.
-
Palat might come back on a cheaper 2-3 year deal. TB no state taxes ... Unless he's going to one of the other 4 that don't... I'm pretty sure he will take a "discount" to stay lol. 5 in TB is close to 6 in Vancouver. Could take 3.25 in TB instead of 4ish somewhere else... Edit: Dadanov. Signed 4 x 3 years after 3 very good seasons in the NHL and of course his KHL resume. Covid deal ... so with cap anticipated to go up 3 seasons from now (two more, next and the one after that)... i think that Palat would be happy to sign in TB who's still going to be a contender for awhile, at 4.25 x 4. What would Tampa have to give up to do that? His current cap hit is 5.3.... right in that Miller range where a lot of their good top six guys signed. At a "discount" lol. It would take him to 35 at the same time 4 years from now ... not many guys play that long anymore. Edit: Cernak and Sergachev are their next RFAs they need to be thinking about ... come up after next season. By then still another year of flat cap.... sure they will do what they can to keep Palat ... he's too valuable to them come the post season. McDonagh is their anchor contract. He's the guy they likely will try and unload. 6.75 for a guy who's 33 now until he's 37/38... ouch. Trade proposals could include him ... Sure they won't part with either Sergachev or Cernak easily - but they might be forced to if they can't find a taker for McDonagh...who for sure will be on the third pairing within a couple years.
-
Millers actual value is a late first, a grade A prospect, and a roster player. The roster player is just a lunch pail guy that won't hurt us but is hurting the contender ... for cap. The grade A prospect will be likely their best prospect or one of them. Giroux is a good example. TO was reported to be willing to give up their two best prospects (none of them A's one maybe a B+), their first and Kerfoot for example. Both small forwards, a former 15th overall they got for Kapanen, and some second rounder that likely won't ever play a game so for the farm. Kerfoot decent 3rd line C on contract for one year. A fifth overall 100% is worth more then that.. NYR maybe might be willing to part with Schnieder now ... had they made that trade and we gave them Poolman too to help plug that hole (Lundkvist isn't a great prospect no thanks and thankfully Allvin didn't do that deal if it was even on the table) they'd have maybe beat Tampa Bay. I'm sure they regret it now. That is a deal we'd also take in a second. Schneider, their first rounder with both Miller and Poolman plus 50% retention on Miller.
-
Brock will get qualified it's been reported several times. Recently on NHL.com. Why would it be news on that site? Because for sure he didn't earn the deal yet. JR/Allvin don't have a choice - trading Brock now wouldn't get us a bag of pucks compared to what they could get IF he actually earns his deal - which for a RW is a 35/35 guy at that cost to "break even". He's scored at that rate or close to it his rookie year and that's about it, and mostly on the PP. His actual value is in the 5 range. He will get a 2 maybe 3 year deal as well. At a lot less then his QO. The following year he's still club controlled but the QO rules have changed. Fully expecting that they are willing to wait before they try and trade him - and to see if he can get things back on track. We've seen it often enough with other players ... buy low sell high - so yes we'd get some offers .. like Brock for a second rounder just to clear our cap out. Bag of pucks. I've been a huge Brock supporter and still am - but he's got to earn his contract(s). Was OK at best during his bridge, for sure is hurting us with his QO unless he breaks out and produces 60-70 points and isn't a liability.
-
Miller getting a 5th is absolutely a slam dunk for us. And yes they are close to a slam dunk as anyone can expect from a 5th overall. Sure he could end up like OJ ... but he wasn't even a first rounder on some lists prior to the WJs. It happens ... You do understand, Miller is only under contact with us for one more year right? And giving him a raise at 30 to what he's earned ... isn't going to necessarily be a good thing. We should remember what happened to the last core the second the Sedins signed their last and final deal. Miller isn't a Sedin either. Again i like Miller but you take this deal and run. Edit: The oppurtunity costs also include what we can do with that cap space. Both the cap space saved from going 5.25 - 9.5/10 which probably he will want from a high taxed team, and the extra money while the pick is on his ELC...Already he's lost over 800k per season since been traded from Tampa. Take home. He's going to cash out. Sure he'd like to stay - but expecting him to take a serious discount would mean 8.5ish for us - a massive one. And even then that means we lose someone in the 4ish range after replacement with an AHLer or league min vet.
-
One year of Miller vs an almost slam dunk top four D that can be club controlled for a decade or more? We'd be silly not to make that deal. There is no guarantee Miller will re-sign. IF they are keen on re-signing Miller they will already be working on that deal - same with Horvat actually. For sure Miller has earned the right to become a free agent as well. The cost to keep Miller at 8.5 in TB/Seattle/Dallas/Miami/Vegas ... is 11.1 million in BC, ONT and Quebec. Same as it was for Tampa when they signed Stamkos "discount deal" which isn't true. TO was rumoured to go 9.5...other teams as high as 10. Stamkos would have made less lol. Miller is going to cost us way more then people think to keep. He's also going to cost us a Garland with a crappy replacement or something like that. Personally i love Miller and for sure want players like him on the team ... at a reasonable cap hit. Which is around 8.5 for us. In this case only cost us a Pearson and a Dickie plus two guys at league min to replace. ONLY that. It's still a cost. Edit: Suggest googling "did Stamkos leave money on the table?" It's a fallacy because he certainly did not. It was too rich for Lou in TO and they wanted him terribly. It's also why Tavares got his monster deal. And why Mathews and Marner got so much. And why JB even with his RFAs had a tough time and for sure with his UFAs. This is a trend that isn't going away no matter whom is running the show. When it comes to UFAs will only get good deals from guys that want to play here that's about it.

Glad someone is paying attention. I would only do Klingberg at something like 5 x 5. That's about it, and even then i still think we'd regret it. If he was a LHD his value wouldn't be that great. Would rather just let Myers play things out. We aren't getting any high picks without letting something go that isn't Miller on his own. Florida ...Giroux was their guy ... Miller isn't going to get a top ten pick on his own. Only teams that might be interested in Miller are contenders or very good teams. What we get back is their first (a late one ... Hogs is a reasonable expectation from the pick, the real prize would be the Tippet level prospect that's somewhat developed and a roster player for cap reasons mostly) ... The only way we could get a high pick is by adding another big piece. Like Horvat or possibly Brock with retention because obviously he's not worth his QO. We need to be prepared for very little major moves. NYR and COL are the two teams that we might get something nice back. And even then - i said Byram for a year now and folks say "concussions"... he's doing better now. Kadri probably won't be back. -

First trade sure. Second not worth it. Math says both combined MIGHT get you another Dickie, albiet cheaper. I think we are better off just playing him and hoping he can do what he did in Dallas. At least for the time being. And use our 15th. Two late firsts sounds sexy but the math isn't great. And at best we save one million on Dickie's replacement. Historically around where Brock was drafted all the way to the end of the second or close to it - is a wash. 50/50 you get a tweener who plays 100 games. Hogs is beating the odds. Linds, Woo's etc .. most don't become an actual impact player. 15th? Well EK/Miller etc ... a lot better odds in getting a decent player, or a great player. Sure could also bust as well. -
[PROPOSAL] All in on Draft day 2022

I like your optimism! OTT for sure has a nice crew, a ton of young assets and a bright future ahead of them. They've also got flexibility with their cap. One thing the don't have is a Demko. IF they are lucky enough to have a goalie in their system come up and do that ... then they'd be the front runner of up and coming Canadian teams. WNP got boned hard. Tough being WNP lol...lost their entire right side and still managed to be decent, Feel WNP won't ever see a cup parade. They should have been the team to do it in Canada ... instead everyone got traded or wanted to be traded or just quit lol. Tough luck. On that ... TO is fun to pick on and always will be, but wow ... every year they can't get out of the first round and the team that beats them goes to the final or so it seems lol. So far they've been the closest to beating Tampa. COL looks to be the one to surpass that - but what they know is Tampa always makes adjustments based on whom they play so wouldn't write them off yet. CAL. Was a contender - EDM spanked them. Vancouver is not as good as either team right now. EDM is a Demko away from being a contender themselves ... good luck prying a number one goals off anyone but you just never do know. If they can do that then ... they've got a few more cracks at it for sure. Conference finals is an accomplishment. Think McDavid might lead the playoffs in scoring after 16 games...has that ever been done before? Unfortunately the Canucks have issues. Cap ones and lack of guys coming up on ELCs (and the two for sure are connected). That blows. But it is what it is. At least there is always hope. Not to be a downer, but realistically it was always going to be parts of this core and the one behind it coming up, that would give us the best odds of actually contending again when JB took over. We were spoiled for 14 years, and this is the hand were given. Absolute best case is we win a cup in 2023. It's hockey and you never just do know. Our division isn't an easy one. ANA and LA are becoming real threats. Vegas, EDM and CAL are peaking and will continue for a few more years. We are a team that's going to go through some changes ... and realistically still has quite a bit of work to do. It's a good core, but it's not enough yet. The way i look at it we need to start building a new team behind the current one. There are some similar things with this team and when Luongo first arrived. That's cool. When we played COL at the end of the year their fans left the building hoping they wouldn't have to play us in the first round. Why? Because we were the better team that game. It's razor thin right now between a playoff team and some that don't get in (we played well enough to get a spot).... i'm fairly bullish we can do some serious damage before we have to make some big decisions too. But am also ok if we make them as well. The goal is to be a good team for a long long time. That most likely means we have to make changes. -
[PROPOSAL] All in on Draft day 2022
IBatch replied to ABNuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I also agree that a re-set should be definitely considered at this point. With the amount of raises that are coming up, this team just isn't built for long term contending level success. Maybe at best a tidy run of playoffs. Know it's tough given how well we played down the stretch to rip it up a little - and it wouldn't be easy on the team either. I'm actually fine with just going with mostly what we had last year and giving this team a shot at making the playoffs and seeing how that goes as well. We don't know until we see it again, and the first crack at it both MIN (top defensive team that year) and STL (cup champs) showed us some things, and of course Vegas really showed us some things. We have a very different team now ... guys are older and better players. That has to be weighed against any Miller trade. My preference though is to re-set thing, in a delicate manner as to not screw up too much of that positive energy Bruce brought in. That means a major overhaul like this ... likely isn't on the table. They've said as much ... this thread hinges on Forsberg signing with us. Right there ... that's going to cost us a lot more to win the sweepstakes. Klingberg has been offered a good deal apparently wants free agency ... Dallas is part of the FAB 5, teams with no state tax. I suppose the Swedish connection might be appealing, but he'd be leaving at least 1.25 million per year on the table on a similar deal in Dallas. Miller has lost over 800k per year since being traded. Klingberg to me is just another OEL but on the right side. Is he going to get the PP time to bump his stats? Guess it comes down to the contract, but it definitely would end up another anchor one for us. Overpaying to fix JBs lack of foresight on that side. The meat and potatoes of this thread is creating a re-set and building behind EP which i like a lot. Horvat getting re-upped is fine ... I think we've got a decent foundation but it's for sure missing some footings ... not having any young D's ... yes QHs but it's not enough ugh. Going to have to jack up the house and make the repairs. Sakic did this in COL five years ago when he drafted Makar. Look at them now. I'd be even more happy is we traded enough guys to tank the team both this and next season. Demko. He's the pickle isn't he? We aren't going to be the worst team without trading him. COL was the worst team the year they drafted Makar. By a long shot. It's impossible to know which way the teams going to lean. The easy thing is actually just let them play more and keep assessing and it's not necessarily the wrong thing either. With some core ascension on top of how we played down the stretch .... well. Man that would be a pretty good team. For one year anyways. Edit: For Deb (DLC). I love Miller too. He's exactly the type of player I want on my team. A few neat stats. We had the best power play the last 25ish games in the league. Not COL. Not TB. Not EDM. Amazing. Also EP exploded ... those last 25ish games on pace for 45 goals and 95 or so points. Even Brock went back to his career norm production (not the rest of his game so much - just the points) under Bruce. There is always hope. Personally i feel we are a lopsided trade away from putting this team into the conversation of becoming a really good team for awhile as is. Re-signing Miller isn't the worse thing in the world either is it?! -
[PROPOSAL] All in on Draft day 2022
IBatch replied to ABNuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I really liked this thread, it's creative. Realistic? Well where's the fun if we can't start somewhere and NJ is willing to trade that pick - usually those aren't available. This draft is a lot like EPs, nobody is really a huge step above the rest, except the guys they floated back then which were Patrick (consensus number one until the WJ's) and Hirscheir ... at the time they said then there were a dozen or so guys that could go anywhere and were almost interchangeable. Of course nobody knew that Makar would become a once in a generation D. That draft was considered very underwhelming after McDavids/Mathews etc ... turned out it certainly was not, Makar looks to be just as valuable as both those guys. EP is no longer the best player from that draft and hasn't been for two years now. I wouldn't slot anyone from next years draft into the lineup. That's a good way to kill their development. Kakko. Puljajarvi. Patrick. Not all high picks should be in the NHL right away. Sure maybe he can get a spot out of camp, but we can't slot them in unless they've earned it. Laffy. Even Joe Thornton took some time, and we all know about the Sedins (and they did get some time). As for the trade value. NJ isn't looking to contend next season, rather a young roster player that fits into their group. Sure you never know, but i doubt Miller is going to get it done, not on his own and especially not by adding Myers with or without retaining. Still think NYR is the most reasonable destination for him. But that said maybe Miller plus our 15th and something else. On Forsberg. That deal isn't going to happen as is either. Some team is going to have to pay him full term. Should that be us? I'm not sure it should be. But it wouldn't be the end of the world either. From that viewpoint we'd have to weigh that against just re-signing Miller. I always get worried around UFAs that have a career year just before free agency. At least Miller has done it 3 years in a row now and still has one more year left. Forsberg x 7 vs Miller x 5/6 years .... Miller is a center and has more intangibles, Forsberg scores more goals ... close to a wash IMO. Yes Forsberg has higher end skill set which is appealing, but i'm not sure EP is ready for first line center attention yet either. My gut says Forsberg will go to the highest bidder, that means closer to 10 for us then 9, those darn taxes. Miller is way more likely to take a discount then Forsberg. He is getting a huge pay bump because we are the team that gave him opportunity. And he's acknowledged that more then once. Of course in this situation it's about what Miller can also get us back - sorry it's not the second. Maybe Miller and Brock 50% retained would do it. If it doesn't hurt us a lot - it's not a fair trade. That would hurt us a lot. And we most definitely would need Forsberg this summer unless a full tank is where we are going....so expect something like 9.75 x 7 for Forsberg to play in a 53% tax market. Picks: I have zero issue with your picks...both guys with proper development should be core players coming up behind QHs and EP. Get that's the entire point. Just that the values are off. And that we can't just slot them in either. Myers won't be going anywhere in this situation. Not a chance any of these D's will play right away. And if they do, third pairing, and very sheltered. QHs, Heisneken, Makar, Fox...all these guys took at least one year. Seider did too. -
[PROPOSAL] All in on Draft day 2022
IBatch replied to ABNuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I get the following one is worth tanking for ... but we won't have the same assets then either. Miller is trade this season or not at all ... I think by doing these trades we likely don't make the playoffs either - none of guys from this draft are going to come in and make an impact, and only maybe 2 actually make it out of the gate. Every year threads pop up about selling the farm for the next shiny new toys. It can be fun for sure ... for quite a while it was about all we got to look forward to as well lol.. . OP made a team that should be competitive a couple years down the road and might make the playoff's, but it's definitely not a huge improvement right away either. Forsberg is going to get more then that on a short term deal ... having some cap space to weaponize would be nice so this could work well as a two year tank anyways - get our cake and eat it too! Maybe 2-3 guys from this years draft make their teams right away ... the year after is supposed to be the best draft since McDavids. We could weaponize the cap and develop the picks next year ... and get decent odds on Bedard or whomever. COL did that and ended up with Makar and Byram (Barrie and Duchene)... -
The whole thing is can be a little confusing ... Last season Vegas came into the year with contender status, definitely a favourite in the West again. That sure didn't work out ... and now they've traded for Weber and his 7.35ish for 4 more years of LTIR space. It's highly unlikely he will play another game, MTL said they wouldn't consider the deal if he could. Doesn't look like the league is interested in closing the playoff loophole ... changing the "perception" maybe but that's tough to do when Kuch is making T-shirts "18 over the cap" while chugging his bud lite is pretty good comedy. Teams sure love to imitate recent successes. With Vegas it backfired (adding Eichel... someone was always out - they had to be though) which was also comedy (not that hard to find a doctor to set a date on recovery time that meets the leagues "independent review strict standards") anyone who's had an injury knows healing time at some point comes down to the individuals threshold to play or work through pain while continuing re-hab and these guys get the best of the best care...Weber could have easily not played a game his last season, and no doctor would say he had too. Its definitely not black that and white, a lot of grey areas (some they might "tidy up"). Not sure Vegas still gets that contender status going into next season, but they definitely wouldn't surprise anyone if they made the playoffs and ended up in the final four either.

What's your bold prediction for game 1 next season?

That's about the most hilarious thing i've seen from you but thanks for playing. NSH didn't "model their defense" after PIT. For two decades all they've done is draft D's. Two generations worth. SJ? Don't get that reference either. That's a lot of supposition. What DID happen after PIT won with a middling defense at best (Shultz was no Letang, and a defensive liability in EDM but for sure did his best - not a top pairing guy like Weber, Suter, Josi, Ellis, Ekholm etc etc - and definitely no Brent Burns or Vlasic whom for the better part of a decade was the best defensive D in the league - and both on the team already) ... adding EK? Well he for sure isn't modelling anything after Ian Cole, Domuolin or Shultz is he? One of four D's to ever be in the top ten in scoring 3 times ... Shultz? I watched both those playoffs - the Pens were on their heals all the time, they were not a possession team or particularly good on D either - what they were good at was counter -attack and got incredible goaltending both from Murray and Fleury. I don't know where your going with this one - but find all the GM quotes you want dont see it that way...Neither NSH or SJ modelled anything like PIT, to do that they'd need a Crosby and a Malkin. Letang did play their second cup run. Their first was probably the most mediocre D i remember winning a cup since 93 MTL (and their's was better). What did JB do? He for sure was a follower of recent trends. Just don't see it with NSH or SJ. Both had better D's already. Edit: JB did speed and skill and rolled back the other stuff.

Cu Cu Cu Country Club Cleanup [Proposal]
IBatch replied to hammertime's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Yep. I think any Brock threads should be tagged with his comments. Doesn't mean Brock can't be traded - but why bother really? Doesn't seem like good timing (yet at least). Nothing would make me happier then watching Brock come in guns ablazing and have a 35-35 season. Funny thing is, that's where most fantasy "experts" had him a couple years ago....were they all wrong? Maybe. But that's also where he needs to be to justify his QO. I don't mind giving him one more year to either prove them or the naysayers right. Last year was absolutely mostly terrible...the not mostly terrible was the latter part. Coach Green (who also was his coach when we were pretty bullish on Brock!) is gone ..,, Let's wait and see. -
Bringing up PIT...look at that D lol. Middling maybe? Probably being generous. Unless you've got a team of game breakers you can't win a cup without a strong defense. Ours is maybe a little better then PIT. So is at least half the league right now, What we don't have is a Crosby or a Malkin on the ice for 3/4 of the game. That's why they won back to back cups. One of the best players all-time...not many teams all-time had the one two punch that team had. They weren't a possession team like CHI and LA...middling as well (and thank god for that - i was getting pretty sick of the analytic crowds saying a 55%-60% team is SOO So much better then say a 50% team. What does 5-10% really matter? Hockey will never work that way. PIT was coached to counter-attack and it worked like a charm. Low percentage shots... mean nothing other then maybe a couple extra goals at best every 100 shots. Then you regain possession - and off the to races if you have the right horses which they did. St. Louis. No superstars. Just a loaded team that could roll a top 10 that was hard to beat. Smart as well. There are several ways a team can win a cup. Cap era is different for sure. Very very difficult to "load up". For 20 or so teams anyways. The difference between 22-10 is razor thin. As in 22nd overall to tenth. And the difference between a contender and the other 9 teams is also razor thin. It's almost impossible not to have holes in your lineup .... the only teams that doesn't right now is TB and maybe CAL.... COL is loaded loaded ... but doesn't have a real starter. Also will say this - TB and COL are the best teams we've seen since the early early 2000's. Loser points take them off for starters. Once you compare teams ... Detroit/COL/NJ were the cream of the crop back then. And for most of the 90's as well. I find the tax difference sucks because we have the worst taxes in BC. But at the same time i absolutely love to see great teams again. It's been a long long long time.
-
As an aside .... i don't recall exactly when it was, or the team (CLB?, NYI?) but think it was in the mid 2000's... a team had ten picks, used every single one on defenseman, and not one of them worked out lol... It was a story back then, because it was used as lesson in taking BPA. Obviously their scouting staff crapped the bed - but they blew extra picks and an entire draft going in there only focusing on their D. Also i agree with the OP. Teams should be built from the net out ... with a big eye towards their number one center as well. Right now our team needs to consider doing just that, including the heir apparent to Demko. Demko has arrived and is considered one of the 10-12 true number ones in the league ... fantasy wise around 8th at the moment (that of course would move up if we are a better team - but it's also a huge testament to what we do have right now as well, obviously we aren't the 8th best team in the league are we?) ... There are two slam dunks this year, both will be gone by 6-7 likely. One could go as high as 2-3. However there are also two more guys we could consider moving up a little to grab IF they are still around and the cost isn't too high. Likely a second rounder. If they could trade Hogs or Rathbone instead it might be something to consider though (RHDs as well). Rathbone is NHL ready right now but not a great fit on our team. One small PMD is fine - two makes things tricky and he won't get the PP time at least not without some sort of massive break out. Prefer we keep him but if we don't play him and when he's waiver eligible i'm sure someone would grab him for free. Means if we use him as a depth guy, he comes up we risk losing him for nothing... The only way i see this current team filling a top four role we need - and upgrading at the same time, would be a trade or over spending via free agency for someone who will decline at a bad time. Why they are looking for guys 26 and younger. Schneider would not only replace the hole we have not having two firsts recently, but would also give us the option to trade Myers and go after Manson. To me that's the ideal best case. I do think that the team needs to start considering creating the core behind the one that currently exists, rather then trying to "fix" things.

How far are we from being a playoff contender?
IBatch replied to PetterssonOrPeterson's topic in Canucks Talk
Yet we sold out during the JB era, or close to it....so wouldn't be worried about that much. Aside from the playoff revenue that is. -
Cu Cu Cu Country Club Cleanup [Proposal]
IBatch replied to hammertime's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Allvin/JR made it clear they don't have a problem with Brocks QO...and that they still had him under club control for another year anyways (after this QO offer). Feel they won't sell low on him, and let him sink or swim as far as whatever sort of deal he gets the following year. Also said he hasn't earned even a medium term deal ... 2-3 years. So he's got to decide if he wants to take us for the one year deal, or sign a bit more guaranteed money and prove it's justified. I'm sure we could get a bag of pucks for him and his cap space back. I'm not crippled with the idea he's the next Brett Hull or Cam Neely trade. But i don't think he's worth writing off quite yet either.
