Yes. Also as far as finding those filler players, especially depth ones on cheap deals, each city/team has there own attractions on a variable scale. WNP vs TO/NYR for example...not quite the same is it? At least 50% of the league still is filled from Canadian players more or less - but some of those teams just seem to be at a distinct disadvantage these days especially. Players have a lot more choices. Friedman wrote about this last off season - covid restrictions, media and fan hyperactivity in Canadian cities, and the big one - taxes came up for reasons US cities often get them. Being a contender for sure adds to the allure of playing for a cup too. Vancouver, back in the 2010ish peak Sedin era was a destination because we were a contender, not as many non-state tax teams existed and BC was equal with both Alberta teams, under 50% ... 7th least taxed team in the league. Now we are the most taxed team tied with TO/OTT and MTL...34.6-53% is a massive difference in take home pay. Recently we've seen Ontario born hockey players go home to TO, and think that won't stop, at least while they are a good team (which they are) ... New York has attracted free agents for as long as i can remember. Right now it's Tampa Bay, Vegas, Dallas, Miami, and a recent addition to the no tax club, Seattle. Remarkable that JT Miller loses 800 plus K a year in salary playing in Vancouver compared to the deal he signed in TB. It's also why you can see a range ... If the average fan can look this stuff up - what tips are the players getting from their agents? Miller signing for 7 x 7 say in COL - is like signing for 8.25 x 7 here.... Only the CALi and New York teams approach what Alberta teams (lesser provincial taxes) get paid. Edit: I didn't really see this as much of a problem a decade ago but now i do. The final four ... and the final two teams. I've definitely noticed a pattern. It can't be a coincidence that the teams paying the least tax or close to it, seem to be climbing the ladder and often in the final four. NYI and MTL being the exception. With parity it definitely gives some teams an edge. And on that - i like things not being so vanilla, actually rooting for TB this year. And if it was our team i'd be buying "118 million over the cap" t-shirts too. First actual dynasty we've had since the Oilers.

- Only four teams can compete with Tampa Bays tax rates ... that's it. They look like "team friendly" deals - but once you add the overall money into it and compare what was reportedly offered (Stamkos is the easiest to go because it was made public), the overall take home pay is virtually the same, and some of these guys won't be finishing their last season. Apparent discounts is a better way to put it. SJ and TO we're willing to give a lot more ... but Stamkos signed for "less" only in cap - not actual dollars, 34.6% compared to 53% is a ton of dough ... 8 goes up to 9.5 etc ... JT Miller has lost 800k of take home pay each year he's been a Canuck.

Cu Cu Cu Country Club Cleanup [Proposal]

Nope i'm just saying maybe we should give him another chance. I enjoy your posts too.. I've also suggested Brock and Myers are the guys we need to find partners for - but they won't bring us anything but cap relief and then gamble on UFAs ... Think it has to start with Miller. NYR might have beat TB if they had him instead of Schnieder. If that's not a workable deal then trading Myers comes with a lot of risk at least as far as playoffs go next season. I sometimes get my hackles up a little over Brock because we've also seen what he can do - and yes part of that is he can be good along the boards - 12th best in the league two seasons ago for a forward (as in getting the puck back) ... best on our team actually. He took a massive hit i think from Soucy in MIN to make a play and new it was coming...he's not a delicate flower either. -

JB definitely dug his grave by timing things wrong as far as making a contender. Creating a team just to make the playoffs? Well maybe he accomplished that. Not allowing our team to bottom out properly (well five years ago we were second worst) and always spending to the cap ... those things ruined it to a degree. Fortunately, at least for a year or two, this team has a fair amount of assets other teams would love to get their hands on. Whether Allvin has the balls to let this club go back and finish the job or not is totally up in the air. Has to weigh one year (next season) going again with mostly JB team, against trading one or two core guys or a core guy and a key support player like Myers or Garland won't be an easy decision. Having watched this team since the Smyl era, have to say it's hard not to like. It's got a totally different flavour, loved how they came together down the stretch. IF they can play like that from start to finish, the excitement level going into the playoffs as a number one or two seed in our division will be off the charts. -

Brock isn't the only topic. You want a faster team... i'm saying that's not the only thing we need. -

Point is - both Pearson and Toffoli were getting so much "warrior status" on this site and the love for a player that barely played any games only rivals maybe 1/2 a season of Sundin lol. They both wilted ... wouldn't go in a corner or take a hit to make a play. Yet you guys are ready to throw Brock under the bus ... shame . Drafted the guy and he's already scored almost as many points as Pearson in how many games again? I'd suggest maybe go back and watch the games again (bubble) Who exactly, did Tofu "shut down" aside from his first game back he was almost invisible. Yes this year Brock wasn't very good. The year before he was. -

So how did Tanev and Toffoli and Markstrom do this pkayoffs? Warriors of ultimate myth status mostly. One has a cup ring at least. Markstrom got ventilated, Tanev was injured same story as Canucks. I agree we need to get tougher. Faster? Lol whatever. Hedman isn't that fast, neither is AP. Fast isn't everything it's so passé really since PIT back to back cups. You need the full meal deal to make it work. -

Ok that's a little dramatic isn't it? One things for certain - blank - most players in the league never lift a cup. Sure maybe some of the things are true - but i watched Brock take some big hits to make plays during the bubble, while both Tofu and Pearson "seasoned battle tested vets'" just wilted and played possum. So maybe think about that. -
[PROPOSAL] MY SHOT AT THE OFF-SEASON OVERHAUL
IBatch replied to R3aL's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
What trade? You mean the supposed trade that never was on the table that CDCers think was on the table because it was written about so it was true? ALL that was reported was NYR were interested in Miller. Half the league was too. TO writers wrote up their fake trade scenarios for him as well. The only people that know what was on the table are the brass on both teams. If Schneider was actually on the table - do you really think they'd not of pulled the trigger? Virtually all the experts said the exact same thing - and will again this deadline. A grade A prospect, a roster player and a first rounder. The exact same thing that they hypothesized last TDL. -
For me at least, ARI is his ugly sin child that he's kept hanging onto for way, way too long. He told Quebec they need and arena - they built one (state of the art at the time, since collecting dust - now a decade or so old) and instead it's the "market" or it's "ownership". I really want a Canadian running the NHL badly. For all his warts Eagleson at least stood up for Canadian hockey and made the Canada Cup and Summit series something special. Bettman has done nothing but expand the league and make it very, very tough for Canadian teams to compete.
-
Yes it is something the NHL and NHLPA need to re-evaluate. NHLPA hates escrow ... what i don't get is aren't these contracts insured? Who's actually paying the wages? The teams or insurance. If it's insurance then it's a bit of a messy situation. The cap does need to stay within range for the system to work.

COL worst and second worst team in the NHL , drafted Makar and EP 4/5, i'd say that was good karma/luck - and of course QHs slipping because of Zadina and Kots (too many vowels) taken before QHs but that was around where he was supposed to go (most felt Det for sure though - lucky only because MTL went way off board at 3 for us) .... anyways agreed no lotto luck just some home runs over the years ... Bure of course being the best all-time so far.
-
I don't see Myers as a problem at all either ... I see not having Myers as more of a problem but would be happy to see a Tanev type instead ... Mitchell... Manson...

It's worse if we re-sign Miller and he turns into LE plus 2.0. That to me is the worst case scenario. Another year of Miller plus playoffs is also better then a bad trade (prospects could do nothing and could take back bad cap that makes it impossible to improve the team - aka a bad trade)...there are a lot worse cases then just playing Miller - enjoying his time here, and using his cap somewhere else later. Of course best case is a cup run lol but that's pie in the sky thinking. So is expecting a massive return to a degree. I expect it will be something in the middle. Garland wasn't a bad trade ... dumping that much cap was a little bit like getting a loan to pay off a credit card for sure - Garland filled a hole for sure that needed filling and OEL did too. Where JB really messed up was his timing, and thinking we were good enough when clearly we are not. Good enough for playoffs isn't contending, but will say a lot of coaches and GMs including "contenders" say the difference between a playoff and a lot of non-playoff teams - and a contender and a playoff team is razor thin now. So do see some reasoning behind getting to the playoffs as a first step to see how we do. Vancouver's 90's teams we decent to good playoff teams. LA won two cups as at best a mediocre regular season team ... both teams were better in the post season. Peak Sedin teams were actually the opposite.
-
Yes. I'm not sure we will get a monster return, but saving the 3 million or so raise, plus whatever the return is could be very important. Almost see the worst case a monster deal then a quick regression ... something in the middle is most likely - and i'm actually ok with one year of playoffs then watching him walk. That's also a good return. Still get the cap back ... plus further evaluation.

[PROPOSAL] MY SHOT AT THE OFF-SEASON OVERHAUL
IBatch replied to R3aL's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I like Myers - but yes his cap hit is high and we need an upgrade. He'd be fine as our 3rd paring guy ... and is actually decent as a top four RHD as well. Funny, one of the best prospects this draft RHD - and guess who THN had as his best possible comp? Myers. And since i'm going there - another one of the better prospects had Brock Boeser as his best possible scenario outcome... OEL - Myers got it's fair share of compliments this year - not from our fans - but the media and experts. It's a ligit pairing, it's just too much cap by 2-3 million for what they actually do. Myers will get another deal when this one is over - likely in the 2-3 range, holding on to him that's when we'd likely get the best return. But we need cap and he had a good enough season to trade him for a 2-3 round pick. Myers also amps his game up in the post season - that's a rare trait. We could miss him when he's gone. Edler back on the left side this year would be nice too. Never should have signed Hamonic ... knowing he'd be out. JB made some bad and some good moves this was his achilles heal - and Greens too. With Edler in the lineup at that cap hit doubt our PK would have been that bad. -
[PROPOSAL] MY SHOT AT THE OFF-SEASON OVERHAUL
IBatch replied to R3aL's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I think we should stay away from Lundkvist. Schneider or Marino or something else (a C replacement plus a pick). We don't need another small D - QHs is good enough and we might need Rathbone just for cap. Schnieder is a good target and they'd be better with Miller for sure. Let them develop their 3rd pairing guy. I really don't see LA as a trade partner for anything but support players. Miller won't go to a team in our division. -
[PROPOSAL] MY SHOT AT THE OFF-SEASON OVERHAUL
IBatch replied to R3aL's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
This is something that would create a need to start heating the bronze to make a statue of Allvin outside our arena. These moves might be possible - NYR one for sure is the most realistic of the group. Because they are in the conference final - and your correct they don't need the right side at the moment as much as they need Miller. In fact IF they'd made that trade at the deadline, I think they'd give COL a run for their money and beat Tampa Bay. The PIT trade doesn't seem very realistic though. Pearson maybe a tiny upgrade on Kapanen now as far as production goes ... and gives them experience - but they have to decide what to do with Malkin and if it's time to rebuild. That core isn't getting any younger. Feel we'd have to trade Miller to them to get Marino and that's only if Malkin is coming back. If he's not then they set their course. Miller would be a good option to on their LW and a second line C for them when Malkin is out, which of course is every season at some point. As for Forsberg he's going to cost any team an arm and a leg. Yes he's an upgrade on Miller. And no i wouldn't mind that anchor one bit. It would give EP one of his line mates for the next 5 years anyways ... Miller - maybe 3-4 if we re-sign him so make it so! Good job OP. Again IF we could pull this off our right side is sorted for the next decade or so. Amazing. And glad you didn't ask for Lundqvist - to me he's 50/50 at best. Rathbone is a much higher touted prospect at this point in time .... Its fun to hypothesize these sort of things, and like you said "not sure the cap will work" so won't bother down that lane. These are some Pat Quin moves... Butcher for Ronning would have been a win - and i loved Butcher. Cool name and the "Strangler" was one tough hombre. We also got Courtnall and Momesso (who was one tough hombre as well, even tougher)....We also got Lumme for ... a second rounder lol. Man could that guy win trades. Drafting would have actually been bad if it wasn't for Bure ... but his trades - Stajonov for Naslund ... enough said but i'm only saying these things because we have done it before. Let's hope Allvin has some inner Quin in him, what a great GM he was for us. Gave us more playoff series and game wins then anyone else and it's not even close really. -
COL had the worst record in the NHL and by quite the margin, five years ago with less then 50 points ... we were second worse with 69 or something like that. Now they are in the final. Sakic faced heavy criticism for waiting so long to trade Duchene....Barrie went too (for Kadri)...and they drafted Makar. Now they are in the final. I doubt we'd have the same luck they had, and would have to trade more guys then that to teapot tank ... but it is a scenario that IF they decided to go there i wouldn't be too unhappy - 2023 is supposed to be the best draft since McDavid. Building behind EP and co is one path. Last years Bruce Canucks actually weren't all that bad. Even Tampa Bay had its struggles and has some holes. COL is the best team i've seen in the NHL since the early 2000's. Quite remarkable given the cap era. They have to beat the best - which right now is TB, probably the best team since Detroit of the late 2000's and maybe even better. If TB plays COL we are in for a treat. Their only weakness is they don't have top five goaltending, top ten is even a little debatable. There are only 10-12 true number one goalies in the league right now or at any given moment according to a recent GMs comments in NHL.com .... ones that can play 65 games a year and we have one - which i think means a COL type re-set is that much tougher to achieve and Allvin knows this. What we can do however, is fill OJ, Miller's and Garland/OEL holes in our 21 and under group (OJ of course 24ish soon) via trading two of our vets. And it could mean we don't make the playoffs ... but i think even doing that it we'd have decent odds. And it's what the team needs to consider. That's Miller and Brock IMO. Horvat stays the same way Landeskog did. Garland moves up on the first unit .... Brock won't get traded right away as well... because it's bad timing. Could be Garland instead but doubt that. Myers and Miller ... one for cap space to beef up our ability to maximize cap space and gain some picks (Dandanov in Vegas maybe?) ... There is a possibility no big trades happen either and the cap is just allowed to shed naturally - but Allvin would be shredded a little for saying this team "can't afford to lose UFAs for nothing"... Pearson is also a possibility. In the end i'm pretty sure we won't come in with the same core we did last year - and yes Miller is a core player.

[Proposal] Charlie McAvoy to Vancouver
IBatch replied to Maddogy's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Personally i wouldn't want McAvoy. I've watched him play he's maybe an inch taller then QHs and one small fantastic PMD is good enough for me. Edit: And he's already showing the wear and tear....big no thanks. -
I think your right with the trade but wrong with the prospect. Suzuki was their best prospect at the time (or second - depending on whom made the list - but still their near their top guy)... But i do agree that's about what we can hope for in a Miller trade. What is funny about this is check out what they traded for Tatar in the first place.
-
Sprague Cleghorn and it's not even really close ... To me see a name like that and imagine a guy who can put the reigns on after the horses are tired and keep the cart moving through a snowstorm and some furs on his back.... As for current player this is pretty cool. Better then most names out there.

We shouldn't.
