  1. Good post Baggins. Liked what you said about change at the end...going to a Habs game is fun - in their building, because of all the history. You could spend a couple hours just walking the bowls and reading about the history (have plaques about guys in Morenz and before era right up to recent retirees)... the fans are very engaged too, fun to watch their "Joy of Life" which is very important to them, and the Habs for sure are one of if not their biggest treasures. You'd have to spend ten minutes and hurt your neck looking up at all their banners ... not much room up in those rafters ... even as a avid Canucks fan (and no other team since i was a kid ) it's hard not to appreciate or respect their culture and history. The statues out front ... their hero's are larger then life for sure. We can never compete with that. I think the numbers we retired were deserved though ... As an aside .... OTT actually also hung their "cup wins" from the 20's or whenever that was lol. Kind of embarrassed for them. Wouldn't be much different if we hung the Millionaires one would it? Most middle aged folks i know are still Leaf fans too (live near OTT)... so i suppose OTT had to do something to legitimize themselves competing against their big brother 3 hours down the road. And bigger brother 2.5 the other way. Edit: I think we need to stick to the orca. Not my favourite, and well isn't the majorities either, although i expect over time that will change. But do think our 3rd should be the black skate (and would love to see the White Skate even more). It rocks. Habs, Detroit, CHI, NYR, Leafs, Boston ... of those the first 3 did a great job ... the rest decent. But for sure are all iconic.
  2. Absolutely. The one that got me was designers that evaluated for THN to rank the best hockey (all not just NHL) uniforms slagged on Buffalo's ... to me the Sabres had one of the coolest logos. They sure loved the Whalers though and rightly so. And felt that SJ was the best uniform of them all (ahead of Swedens, Habs, etc etc) explaining why the shark was so cool ... to me it's a cartoon shark instead of a cartoon Duck with a mask on - both cheesy...also why i don't ever want to see Mr. Logger man on ours.
  3. Funny but designers actually like the simplicity of it and the negative space forming the C. But it's hard to see because it' like a rectangle (rink) with round edges lol (not really but i can see why it's a bit confusing given it's not super obvious like the Habs ... can you see the H in theirs?) ... Best one for sure is the Whalers ... those guys(gals) deserve a prize as far as making something look cool with negative space ...
  4. Blues for sure got it right from the start ... Buffalo did too. Seals - awful - ours was better. SIR feels like a half done job - ran out of time and just went with it lol. IF they got it right at the start - none of this would even be a topic. So did PHI for that matter ... got it right from the start. Their uniforms are pretty iconic. North Stars was also pretty meh... I liked our colours though ... and really it wasn't the worst of the all-time worst NHL uniforms ever - just plain and a little middling. ANA - what a joke of a uniform that was/is for example. Based on a movie AND corporate branding lol... at least they didn't make a movie about the "Orca's"... Quin kept the team's name from changing ... he did what he could ... that era of our history makes JB's feel like we won a cup.
  5. I made a few comments about the white Skate. It was way easier to see on TV, and given they were our home uniforms, they rocked for sure. The Black Skate was also awesome ... pure menace. Folks need to remember that Vancouver owned that colour for a couple decades (black). No other team in the league went there .... until almost ALL of them did in the late 90's. They copied us. Dallas, Buffalo... I suppose LA was an early adopter changing theirs from purple/yellow too Black when Wayne came in (and that one sure made an impact as well...) It got tougher to see anyones numbers back then lol ... until TVs got bigger and cheaper and finally high definition came in. Fox puck was there for a reason lol. Sure a few teams kept to their roots (Detroit, Habs)... but CAL didn't either. And several others. Canucks had it right ... and then messed it way the heck up. Wasn't until they changed back to close to our original colours and the peak Sedin era that they got back on a better path. For the younger generations, like it or not, the Skate won't ever go away. Because it's just better. Fans of other teams, players young and old ... media .. They like it. Horvat and QHs look like total bosses wearing it ... so does Myers ... so does anyone really.
  6. That's pretty bad-ass. Not sure about the C does come across as a bit too close to the Habs C ... but it is what it is... I'm ok with just leaving them as is and bringing back the Skate often. Would really like to see the White Skate on away games ... used to be our home jersey and to me they were the best uniforms we've ever had ... TVs weren't so good back then - the black ones were hard to see the names/numbers at times (try watching on a 20 inch tube with rabbit ears 15 feet away on a couch lol...couldn't see the puck much either lol)...
  7. Other players and fans love that jersey too - it's not just about nostalgia. Media types too. Practically every game they've brought it back someone is drooling over and gushing about it - media types, fans and players alike. Miller isn't even old enough to have followed that run - yet boldly stated to make it home jersey's all the time .... Bieksa said that their team (peak Sedin era players ) - asked many times to bring it back and wear it but were denied - they maybe were 10 during that run and how many of these guys were actually Canuck fans growing up .... not many. For whatever reason it just works, the V wasn't that bad either. What is bad, the first Orca, awful really why purple? Ugly. At least they fixed the colours. Edit: I agree the logo is unique - not sure objectively if it's really that bad, for whatever reason it just worked. It feels fast maybe that's it ... Other logos vary from ok to amazing (whalers take the cake i think anyways) ... I love the Sabres logo too, but a group of famous graphic designers picked it apart in THN book on the 25 best hockey jerseys in the world (they picked SJ as number one...eye of the beholder i suppose, one of their earlier ones)....CHI, Sweden, Detroit, Habs next up ... Trail Smoke Eaters we're top ten as well only BC uniform that made the cut, none of the Canucks jerseys made it in lol... quite a few juniors ones did though...so i'm sure your right on the logo. I like it. But yes it's probably very nostalgia based for me at least. They did give props to both the SIR and the Skate though and explained what was good about them and what wasn't ... They crucified the Orca and the V though.
  8. Not a fan of offer sheets given the revenge one ... and Vegas will have loads of cap space to do that against us with picks from this draft and 2023's at a time when if Allvin can straighten us out we should be in our window. That said aGENT really good trade target. Think they'd probably want Klim back ... and that might be enough to make it work with them. Don't know how much of a threat they see us ... probably not much of one so definitely could be a possibility despite being in our own division. Vegas was a favourite entering into last season ... Eichel was their Kucherov "keep someone of the LTIR" play. It was great that it blew up in their faces - too many important guys off the team for too long. Roy ... could fit him in with a minor trade even Pearson.
  9. But didn't we win in five?....94 vs TO.
  10. mll you'd probably be interested in a couple great studies that are available with some googling. One thing that i found very telling, is despite a massive ballooning in staff and development, actual hits and misses are minuscule compared to back in the early 90's late 80's ... I liked that chart thanks for sharing. Another curiosity is more then half drafted players eventually get a game or two ... that's pretty incredible considering how tough it is to make it. Reality is you need those high picks to create a new team - but it's not an automatic either. You also have to hit on your later picks. People beat on Brock way too much ... funny how THN did their draft preview and always do a best possible scenario with their first rounders ... one in the higher end of the draft Brock Boeser. It's not his fault covid happened or his Dad got sick either (RIP), regardless he was an awesome pick even if he never played another game . Edit: Bader isn't saying that 25% play 200 games though, if he is he's incorrect.
  11. My bold prediction after next season is we don't blow the start of the year like last season. Also think that Allvin is going to move a guy out this off-season to help with our D, our pool etc. And that guy will be either Brock or Miller. Kind of low hanging fruit - but it is what it is. Think despite that major move, the team under Bruce stays around where his winning percentage is too. Allvin doesn't want to have all those high slot chances - so if there is a taker on Myers (who hasn't been all that bad really), he's going too. Edit: In other words, despite some roster overhaul with some key guys, the team manages around the same winning percentage under Bruce - and that means playoffs baby!
  12. With Tanev and Edler gone .... you might be right .... Too early? lol
  13. Lol eventually yes on a full term deal, but he's got a lot of good hockey left in him - at least five years, and i'd be shocked if he got more then 6 anywhere. Edit: Some interesting comments from his Dad...who played over 1000 games, one of the best defensive D's of his era, tough as nails, and the only D ever to pile up the PIMs and go to an all-star game ... think he did it twice (and one of the better enforcers of his era as well, always in the top 20 fighters which used to be evaluated back then year to year)...comes from good stock. He's a lot quicker then this Dad was - but like him is gritty, and he'd instantly be the best guy in front of our net - make Edler blush and he was decent at that. A 5 year deal would be palatable. Also agree it likely won't happen, but i'd trade Myers and sign him in an instant, most of our problems would disappear on the back end, except cap issues, and more youth.
  14. He's the guy i've been hoping for the past couple years. ANA finally traded him ... get they didn't want him in our own division and that a trade was a bit of a pipe dream. He's going to get a pretty nice contract. And yes Willie Mitchell is a decent comp, we all know how good he was and what a mistake it was to not re-sign him (sure he was getting older ... but turned out that didn't matter did it!)...
  15. Shanny ... he was pretty awesome. Howe of course and Mark Messier the name that shouldn't be spoken lol. Others too. But yes Iginla was kind of the last of the power forwards .. Lindros, Neely ... and so many guys a level lower like Kevin Stevens, Shane Corson, Gary Roberts, Rick Tochett, Clark Gilles, Mel Bridgeman, Wendel Clark... that's just off the top of my head but get where your going with this - really they're weren't that many. Shanny, Messier, Howe, Neely are better or debatable, but not many guys. Only thing id say about Iginla was he was a bit of a slow starter, and a lot of guys aged out before he became a world beater. For sure a top end guy in the 2000's though.
  16. Iginla might be the last power forward we see for awhile that's HHOF level...they just don't exist anymore. Miller is decent that way though ... same with Zib in NY. Wilson is a D-bag but i'm sure they love him in WSH. Used to be there was a ton of guys like Kane and Kadri (on ice) ... both will get decent deals ... Kane is a question mark
  17. Don't forget McKinnon likely will end up the highest paid hockey player after next season. His salary is doubling. No way he gets less then 12 which would be a discount. And Makars cap hit .. Rantenen.. they will quickly end up like other good teams (CHI when Toews and Kane signed their monster deals)...it's extremely difficult for good teams to stay good in this league when they have top end talent. Double edge sword because you also need that to win. Their window will end up much like WSH, PIT etc ... end up needing to wait until cap goes up. But think they've got a long one anyways just like those teams had.
  18. Thing is, the only way to fix the right side , would be trading a key player out. Not sure even Miller will get us anything that's close to ready right away. Carlo. Marino keep coming up ... but when you look at it from that teams viewpoint, a rental certainly isn't getting you either player - and Schnieder isn't coming for Miller either, pretty sure anyways. The guys that could get us that and more are EP/QHs and Demko. Where would the team be without them? I don't think we will get much better on the right side (Schenn was actually pretty decent - as was Myers despite his Choas) unless we get a lot weaker somewhere else. Horvat maybe? For sure would take some wizardry. Also IF we keep up the last 20 games or so next year for 82 games, there really wouldn't be much to complain about. First PP unit in the league, decent PK and two 90 point plus guys plus a bunch of others doing more then good enough...core ascension is still likely this teams best chance. Have to be this season though, after that i'm pretty sure we are in for a COL type re-set. Edit: If Allvin and JR are true to their word - i think we should be expecting some trades to fix the right side and the longer term around Demko/EP/Podz/QHs ... maybe Brock but he's going to have to be lights out and reach his potential this season. I think there is a good chance Miller gets traded ... maybe even Horvat too. They say they want to build lines that will last a long time. It's possible with Horvat .... but not with Miller. Garland is a possibility too. But think he stays - certainly showed he can play 5 x 5, and if Miller or Brock goes he's got a chance to punch way about his pay scale on the first unit.
  19. Burrows so infuriated a former NHL player, believe his name was Patrick Sullivan (could have that wrong if so apologies) that he repeatedly slammed and slandered him post career (and during his career as well). Think Ron McLean had it in for Burrows lol - this was entirely different level stuff - he hated Burrows guts on every level, and made it his personal mission to blog cast or media or whatever he could to invalidate him as a player unworthy of the NHL. Then there is Ben Eager. Hated Bieksa so much ... it drove him nuts (after beating up Marleau even more so lol) and became a key moment in Canucks history (for those who don't remember - SJ was coming back harder each game and actually outplayed us in those last few games by a good margin - thank to Luongo and Bieksa for that series win, the rest weren't enough) ....2011 of course couldn't match up to Boston - but any other team in the league we could. Was praying TB would win... they didn't and they rest is history. And MG decided we needed more toughness and of course LA just wrecked what could have been an even better run. Thing is hockey keeps changing and moving away from these types of guys - it's also why they are so coveted now. 94 team would have destroyed both Boston and Vancouver even if they took all their "toughness " and combined it. Antoski would have beat up Thornton and Chara at the same time. Marchand would have been knocked out doing what he did to D. Sedin to Linden. He wouldn't have played his rat style at all,-and if he did he'd end up out of the series with an injury. Gino sat in the box but was available for a nuclear deterrent - every single line had a fighter and toughness on it. Diduck was a feared fighter like McQuaid. We could match them and play any style of game needed. So yes i agree 2011 had sand paper and toughness. And douche bags on it too. But they were our douche bags and we loved them for it.
  20. I think that Poolman and Dickinson (and OEL for that matter - OEL like the rest of the team for the most part, was better with Bruce)....all have a decent shot of redemption next season. Ray Ferraro (and watching hockey as long as i have tend to agree with this statement), says it's takes most if not an entire season to get used to a new team and get your groove on. Dickinson IMO, was probably one of JB safer moves .... watching him in Dallas, he for sure worked there. Played a lot of minutes and relied heavily on their defensive side of the game (think Sutter-lite but on the wing)... Poolman was a riskier play. But also his cap hit isn't terrible for a depth guy or a bottom pairing guy. Not saying we couldn't do better because of course we could as well. Burroughs was interesting .... sand paper. Schenn of course ... well what a score he turned out to be (and also a good trade chip, or potential re-signing)....Teams got an early Luongo vibe going on right now. For sure we will see some roster change before the final product of this core is revealed but it's not so bad as is either.
  21. Said this before and getting kind of tired of doing it but will again just for fun: NHL scouts want this from first rounders, and it doesn't mean they will actually get it because the odds are they probably won't: 1-3 overall 700 games 4-5 overall 500 games 6-10 400 games 11-15 300 games Past that 200 in the first round if they can get it. Past 22nd or so right until almost the end of the second round actual odds are 50/50 if they will make it to only 100 games. People constantly think top ten picks work out. Sure some do - some are HHOFers even ... but there are usually a couple of busts. There are some great university studies on the draft worth checking out. 12.5% of the third round makes it 100 NHL games for example - and the entirety of the rounds past it combined come down to the same math - 12.5% there abouts overall. And that's not even a roster player lol. Just a tweener like AG who makes it. JV almost made the cut and he gets bashed as a dud (well he was given his personal life - but on the ice - not nearly as bad as people think he was ...just average for a 6th overall... surely he'd have passed the 400 game mark without covid and last year ...).... Chris Phillips and Jovo ... were they busts? Absolutely not. Actually above average first overalls both of them. Guys like Stepan, Yakupov and Daigle and others lower the curve for sure .but still played. Every single year this site goes absolutely bananas over the next consensus first overall and willing to give up the farm for him. Seen it every year last 8 years anyways. Mathews. Dahlin. Patrick lol...or Hirshier or Kakko or Jack Hughes blah blah blah Lafrenierre or whomever whomever whomever is next. Funny thing is - it's pretty funny looking back at re-drafts a decade later and who should go where. You can't even come close to getting it for a least five years anyways. Guys get injured. Other guys pull a Marchand or Tim Thomas and become elite later. And other guys pull a Tim Kerr - destined for the HHOF and then get injured and are done. Edit: BTW each year GMs go into the draft expecting one roster player and hoping for two .... not talking about tweeners like Vey, AG, Bear etc - but ones that will play some games and have a decent career. The ones who get the most chances absolutely are the first and second rounders ... guys like Motte and Garland have to fight tooth and nail to make the show.
  22. I can't tell if your serious. Anyways for me it's a bit of a win... he's the guy i wanted. Aside from Podz who i prayed to the hockey gods the week before the draft to slip to us - there wasn't one guy during the JB era i would have picked.
  23. OJ wasn't either. Said it at the time. Slid way up after the juniors ... actually Bouchard had better stats his draft year then both OJ's draft year (on a loaded London team) and OJ's draft plus one year. I'm going to hold you to it. Bouchard was ranked in the mid to top ten by most prospect sites. ISS and THN had him around 6-7 ... where we picked. Some had him a little higher some a little lower so not sure where you had the foresight to decide he wasn't in the top 15. But that's ok. I had the same foresight with OJ. Only 10 guys have more points then Bouchard ... most are forwards.
  24. Late first territory is actually tweener 150 or so NHL games though ... as in not a bust...again people overrate picks all the time on this site. NHL scouts consider 200 NHL games as a win past 20
