Not sure what that means exactly...Dorian recognized his EK core wasn't working and pulled the plug about as hard as any GM has done other then maybe Lou in TO since the cap came in and did exactly what most of us hoped JB could or would do. They already had Chabot in the stable too... Dorian and his scouting staff also have a very good drafting history of finding guys outside of the first round. And punching above their weight class in the first round often enough too. They are now at a point where they can start adding playing to compliment their team and spend to the cap - something both Dorian and RIP Melnyk both said they'd be doing soon. They are in an envious position to leapfrog a lot of teams very soon with some smart acquisitions. Look at what happened to our team just by plugging two holes by signing Myers and Miller (and we still had remnants of our last core).... Anyways wouldn't make fun of Dorian. He's done an admirable job - aside from the Zib trade which he got fleeced on, and the Duchene deal (which in a way sparked the tear down and the rebuild in the first place) ... we have Hoglander as a tweener - they have six or seven guys like him and a lot doing a lot better on a team spending not even close to the cap. They for sure could not only afford Miller, he might be a target for them, or one of the other high profile UFAs this summer. Brock makes some sense too. Another guy they can afford and only a short flight to his parents. He loaded up on picks - something we never did, and of course, like usual, hit on more then 90% of the GMs out there.

Hilarious guy ... one liners sure came fast and witty. Some of the things he said wouldn't be seen as ok anymore " puck bouncing like an Indian Rubber (lacrosse ball)" during his play by play - but that one is a legendary quip lol. Old Bob Cole and Neale where quite the tandem....when he won the Foster Hewitt award "I think it's just because i'm old - my social security card has two numbers on it" ... Funny how he spent so much time with two franchises that have suffered more then any other, suppose that's why he has such a sense of humour lol. Canucks and Buffalo, with a good sprinkling in of Toronto too. Their fans have three generations of fans now that haven't seen a cup lol. Maybe it's a survival mechanism. -
[Proposal] Ugh... seriously? Podkolzin is traded??
IBatch replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Conditional picks aren't allowed anymore. I'm not so sure about these deals but the both seem like decent risk reward situations. In most cases we will get a roster player back for Miller to help that team make cap. One season just like his deal. Ride it out and hopefully see the benefit a year later. As for another poster. Bonino was no Kesler but did put up 50 points which is Horvat territory. Wasn't a bad trade really - about what one could expect with only two teams he was willing to go to. Sutter of course didn't work out - mostly because of injuries and never really earned that deal either. -
Isn't this paying through the nose as is though?

Would we give up a couple former highly touted first round players and a 19th overall for a guy that's almost certainly going to become an anchor on a long term deal? Just playing the devils advocate here. Blake isn't going to dump the guys his former cup winners cost him to trade just to go all in on a swan song one more time around Doughty/Quick and Kopitar. Too bad Wilson is takin a reprieve, he's the guy that maybe would do something as foolish as that. That's mostly what they got from their suffrage right there, by trading a lot of vets to make it work. Don't want to be a debby downer, but Miller is going to get us a roster player in return (that is ho-hum) a middling to late first and one grade A prospect.

I was pretty stoked when he dropped to us. Couldn't believe our luck - some had him going as high as second - a lot around 3, nobody past 4 and rightly so. Had a simply incredible playoffs. The rub for me is i'd have also didn't like the idea of having the progeny of his Dad much on our team either. He was a total spineless thorn in our side while in WNP. Only beat on Dana Murzyn (a warrior but really not a good fighter) .... wouldn't even take on our mid tier guys like Momesso (who always looked like a hard night in jail). At least i got a huge laugh seeing him, his new superpower has to be trying to fit his gigantic huge fat neck into that top bottom on his shirt. Keith. Looks like he ate himself and lost his hair lol. Edit: Like him or not - Mathew just got a hundred points. That's a somewhat exclusive club. Only a few Canucks ever managed that. -
Actually Gudbranson is in his prime and doing what a prime defender does in his prime. He was decent in OTT too - with a team that sucked i'd say worse then ours did or at least on par while he was here. I never had much issue with Guddy. The trade didn't work out, but you could see what having a 6'5ish guy on the back end did to the tone of the game. The only thing i didn't like about him was he wasn't a willing combatant. He's definitely a better player now then he was. Most defenseman, the ones that stick - have their best seasons 28-33 or so. That's their prime. There is a reason OTT paid 4 million for one year of service. Because he's actually not that bad - and of course adds intangibles that are really hard to find. He kept other teams honest. Maybe he's a little overpaid - but he's not the same guy that we watched either. CAL has a team - that will still be healthy as the series goes on. Lucic and Guddy ... is there a tougher team left in the playoffs? I don't think so. He scored 6 goals this year and had 17 points - plus 15. Im sure CAL fans love having him in the playoffs.

Two things - one we lack in young centers and RHD. And if there is a deal that makes sense to trade a veteran we will do it. It's a little pre-mature to say he's a good as gone, but i suppose one could "read between the lines" and come to that conclusion ... That said on the flip side - Miller is unhindered playing in the heavy West games, and is durable. Horvat is too. Did mention players 26 and under - i do wonder if they will go with the full re-set mode and trade both guys. Wants to create lines that guys will play for a long time together. EP-Miller-Brock? Not sure that's what he meant. Loved, absolutely loved that he said Brock will only be offered a 2-3 year deal. Have been beating that drum for awhile - guys don't earn those long deals unless they've earned them. His moves at the TDL made room for Brocks QO - another thing i said at the time. Doesn't have a problem with it. Can see Brock either doing just that - or taking a deal with similar pay for 2-3 years. That to me, was the most refreshing part of the summation. And adding sandpaper so we can play any style of game. Losing Miller will be a blow - not so much if we sign Manson. Someone i've been pumping tires on for years now, wanted us to trade for him but get that ANA and other teams don't usually trade between divisions without a special circumstance like we had with Kesler and Bieksa (we were a loser team and it didn't matter much)... Worst case with Miller is always going to be either a long term deal he can't perform too, OR a stupid trade that includes a roster player that doesn't perform either (LE 2.0 scenario). Have zero problem whatsoever, just letting him play his contract out with us - not trading him at the deadline and him walking. People think that is the worst case - it absolutely is not. We get his cap space back, and another year plus hopefully a nice little run with him. Of course there are scenarios that are much better - trading him for a decent roster player, and futures that work out. A lot of those trades, those futures simply don't come close to actually moving the needle. Some do. But a lot do not.

[Proposal] Other Teams Can Do Stuff Too!
IBatch replied to HKSR's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It's either that or re-set around Pasta with a couple years of tanking kind of like what LA did ... i think that they don't have enough on there team to do much other then go the SJ route - which is a re-tool like you suggest they could do (SJ re-tool actually worked...now they have to pay the piper lol)... -

I usually wait and see what THN and ISS come up with - then go and see what guys like Button and McKenzie come up with. ISS is a very good baseline. If you see someone way to high or way too low on a media personality or lesser credible source then that's worth investigating. In the end it's a crap shoot still. These guys are just kids, some have late b-days which matter sometimes as well - others just play on really good teams or really bad ones. None of the rankings are perfect. -
I think that's his max max deal. But your in the ball-park for sure. Reality is he only really earned his second contract one of the three years. Injuries matter otherwise maybe two. Buying a year or two of UFA years i also see as his max deal. Guess we will find out. But your for sure in the ball-park.

Thanks Gawdzukes. Don't take my word for it - i'd have drafted PLD if he was available, then MT who was available, then either Glass or Valardi - then Bouchard (who actually is coming into his own) then Podz (who was the ONLY JB first i had correct - and said so before the draft he could slip from a consensus 3rdish pick all the way to us )..., last year i wanted Clarke really bad ... thankfully he wasn't available, although we could have traded up a spot. Will get back to you on whom i like at 15 ... or in the 10-15 range. I love the WJs, my brother even more so it's almost becoming a religion at my house. So don't get me wrong. Got to see a gold medal game (we lost lol to the US) and some other games live in MTL...first thing you will notice is - "those are small bodies gentleman, small bodies" TV adds 4 inches and 40lbs - they are just a bunch of kids. It's still a great way to see how the best against the best can perform. I wish i could say i picked EP (nobody did ... nobody, not on the CDC except for maybe Timrafan lol) and QHs (who i was completely against - same with Boqvist) but i did not. Edit: So - if i was GM i'd have picked MT, Glass/Valardi, Bouchard (had him ahead of Dobson and argued until I was blue in the face why, but he'd have been my second choice), and Podz. I'd say that my lineup isn't so bad though. MT just broke 100 points. Bouchard is proving himself in the regular season and the playoffs (and is a RHD), Glass isn't - Valardi so-so and Podz is a draw. Edit 2: aGENT ... care to pipe in? Was i really that wrong with Bouchard? Guys had a pretty decent season, and isn't on the first PP unit ... yet. -

For me it's always screwing with the rankings. Whomever comes in and has a good tournament, moves way up the rankings. And guys that are younger, who don't get the minutes like you just illustrated, their status fades a little. Some guys are on their second or third crack at it on lighter teams (Euro's)... and get drafted when they shouldn't simply because they are a couple years older and have one good tournament later - against kids lol. The draft had a long standing boner when it comes to the WJ's ... OJ was far from the only bust over the years. Both Crosby and McDavid - generational players - were criticized their only time at it ... despite being clear cut number ones - because they weren't the best player on their teams. Some overage player was. It's not like it doesn't matter because of course it does - the world juniors are an institution for decades now. And for decades, every single draft - some team gets way overexcited and drafts a bust or a guy that just had a great tournament that's body of work has him in the second or third round or further even. -
He won't do that. It's either the Bruins or retirement. He's said as much all season. And a quick google check: BOSTON BRUINS Bergeron Confirms It’s Boston Bruins Or Retirement
-
I've read several articles this year about him thinking of retirement. Not supposition, from the horses mouth. Has a family, and isn't sure if he wants to keep putting the time into the off-season (each year gets tougher for him) that he knows he has to put in to do it. Nobody should be surprised if he's played his last game.
-
He's been talking about it all year. He's not sure he will come back.
-
Aside from a few guys from the olden days (pre expansion) it's hard not to disagree. Sakic too. Wasn't he 37 when he last scored 100 points? But again injuries and he ruined his hand i think in a chipper. Borque was a beast until his last game. Lidstrom maybe too (and yeah i've said a lot of things about him about how overrated he was). Sawchuk before my time ... Plante and Bower too. Agreed Roy went out on top and still has some miles left in him. Dryden left way too early. Hate to say this but maybe Sundin although he was never top level compared to his peers. Just really good all the time. Bergeron is still at the top of his game - if he retires we will see him in the HHOF in three years no doubt.
-
Bergeron can retire and i wouldn't mind. I've got huge respect for Bob Gainey and Bobby Clark. Some for Bergeron too. Not all Selkes are created equal - Federov says hello, Datsyuk too. Obviously i'm biased.

To me a scorched earth is everyone older then EP gone. And that includes Demko. Why make it hard for us to end up at the bottom again ... this time go for the bottom. Then don't spend to the cap and hire the middle of the row guys for 2-3 years and wait it out. You can't have that much roster change and then spend it on premier UFAs - that's a JB max move (he only did it once with LE and look how pissed we were as a result!)....if we are going to do a scorched earth - then do it. Trade ALL of Horvat, Miller, Brock, Demko, Myers, and Garland for futures. Don't trade OEL... let him languish for a year or maybe two - then he might be begging for a trade. Personally i'm in a wait and see mode. Want the same crew back more or less and let them do there thing. Next off season a lot of cap comes off the books.

(Proposal) Move up in the draft & Upgrade the D
IBatch replied to eeeeergh's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Rutherfords pressers i'm familiar with. Same with JB's. MG too. These guys all say things but don't always act on what they are saying. Before that Nonis didn't say much - Burke said too much and going back to Keenan and Quin they didn't have to do the media stuff. These guys say things all the time. So do the coaches. If you were playing poker - would you be laying your cards on the table and saying this is my hand - and this is what i'm doing? Of course not. Nobody has a clue what's going on - well except maybe Vintage - at least as far as an information stream goes. Every year we wondered what JB would do and it rarely followed a script. Media is told things just to keep the media happy. I never in a million years would have predicted JB would have dumped that cap at .50 cents on the dollar last year. Not that it was necessarily a good idea - but it happened. Critical thinking can't be disregarded based on what the media is saying or the GMs. And not me or you or anyone else had the correct answers. Rutherford won't do what you expect - and he won't do what i expect either. Edit: Well maybe. But i bet someone on this site has got something close to it. I hope anyways. JB was all over the place. Very tough to predict.
