  1. Yep. It always bugged me that Salo was made of glass. Not like he was Edler and Tanev towing the line with nobody behind him. When Salo played great .... when he didn't just frustrating. Especially in a cap world.
  2. Burke was a decent drafter. Nonis had one of the best drafts ever and some duds. Mike Gillis should have managed at least two roster players outside of Horvat and Coho given he only traded one first. That was pretty dreadful.
  3. Huh? Nedved was actually one Quins/scouting staff - best hits. Jagr informed every single GM that reached out that they'd be wasting their pick and he wouldn't show up - except PIT - because he wanted to play with Mario. People also forget perspective. Nedved wasn't a "consolation" prize - he was a legit big promising Center. Took him a couple years to gain some traction then he pulled some major crap. Salary disclosure also had a little to do with that. 38 goals - the sky the limit etc etc .., he was really awesome for us that year. One line can't do it all - we had two great lines History kind of justified the trade but back then it took a cup final appearance for fans to forget about Nedved.
  4. Yes i think Zib. Why i think we should offer him a 9.?! 9.25? x 5 deal. And bonus all but one million like Zib. Means he's going to get 42ish no mater what (gross) ... and if he signed say a 8.5 x 7/8 deal most likely he gets bought out the last couple years like Parise and Suter just did. Gets more upfront too, with investments will likely end up more, even though it's less overall money ... AND if he doesn't want to retire and can still play can keep earning. It fits our team anyways. Only tough part for is the taxes. Can't help much on that part although i'm sure swavy guys like you could help him out a lot too. That's what i'm hoping anyways if we do re-sign him.
  5. A player is not guaranteed his money. 1/3 his salary if he's 26 or younger 2/3 if he's older. One way they can get around this if it's bonus structured. The bonus money has to be paid. 2/3 of the remainder in Miller case needs to be paid if bought out (min)...Why i keep suggesting the team does what they did with Zib. He's going to get most his money no matter what. And make it a 5 year deal. Most likely he ends up with the same or more money then he'd get under a -7 or 8 year deal that's worth quite a bit more. Of course it still all counts against the cap too.
  6. You know what could be worse then that? Signing Miller to a Zib deal (all front loaded) for 7 years .... and watching him completely fall off the face of the planet aka Okposo, Ladd, LE and a whole bunch of other guys .... it's a risk to sign him too. It's also a risk to trade him. What they will actually do we will have to wait and see. Personally i'd be happy to have Miller for the playoffs and see him walk over getting bent over on his next deal. He's a bargain at 5.25 .... not so much at 9 plus just about where he should be IF he's a PPG plus player. He's got a decent chance of maintaining that pace for 3-4 years. And that's actually being a little generous. After that? Anchor. So there are worse things that could happen. I for one couldn't stand this site watching yet another former great player for us getting his name dragged around in the mud because he's no longer performing and would absolutely fine if Miller helps the team get to the payoffs next year and then just signs his monster deal somewhere else. Edit: Crippling. The worst case is we actually re-sign him and then it's all downhill from there. Another thing which many have already mentioned thats is bad too - is the possibility of losing others because we don't keep him. All these things have been hashed out. Allvin did say this team can't afford to see UFAs walk for nothing. If he's true to his word that means he's signed - or traded. I highly doubt he's traded if we are firmly in the playoffs next TDL which odds are high we will be with everyone back. Think one of Horvat/Miller/Brock get traded though, and it's likely Brock next off season.
  7. That's where all the Canucks go isn't it? Make about 6% more in money - can still see the mountains, and the come over to BC and purchase houses at an inflated rate to holiday in. It's been like that in Calgary for decades - all the way to Vancouver Island.
  8. They'd have to offer that if they want him for five years .... as a starting point. Personally i'd rather do that then have him at 7 for 7 or 8 years ...
  9. Yes ... or we need to consider moving some pieces on the board and hope for a Quin like lopsided trade that works.
  10. Trading Brock is a possibility for sure. Miller isn't a card you play unless it's actually going to have more value then you'd get keeping him for this seasons play and possibly the playoffs (and weighing that against his replacement - what that will cost - and so many other factors like this cores window). Miller isn't a replaceable asset on the free agent market that wouldn't put you in the exact same position. And the team has many advantages over a new player (which factually doesn't even exist, this year or next). I'm certain IF the value was better this TDL we'd have seen Miller traded. It wasn't. We will also see his stock rise during next season ... not decrease. I'm pretty sure he's going to do the same things again. Or at least keep in that PPG plus range. What your suggesting is a re-set of the rebuild. I'm not opposed to that entirely, actually feel we either need to trim some fat off and go with what we've already got OR just accept 2-3 more years and risk losing any sort of window we have with our core guys on their second deals below Horvat. If only it were that simple. With 32 teams you only get so many chances. This team might see ONE of the Horvat/Miller/Brock go as a happy middle point - but am pretty sure that's not happening this off season other then Brock which is selling low but still 50/50. If the wheels fall off (doubt it - but a possibility) then Brock and Miller are surely gone at the TDL. Miller didn't get an offer Allvin liked - and from what i read from teams that wanted him - i don't blame him at all. What would they be willing to give if he had another 100 point pace season? Or even 90? At least as much. Don't play your cards just because you have them until the timing is right. Who knows maybe we are a 115 point team next year ... Podz and EP killing it would of that with all the rest remaining the same (including Brock scoring his first of possibly many 30 goal seasons still).
  11. PHI is a great example of where we could be headed. They made it to the final early on with their Giroux crew when they were younger - then were up and down like a yo-yo in the mushy middle. About as average or middling team as you can get. Lucked out in the lottery one year and Karma got them good lol. Doubled down finding their second line C in Hayes and paid a steep steep price to do that. Chuck is no Cliff Fletcher ... although related lol. Really to me he's like Wilson lite in the East. SJ at least could make it work with their re-tool, but both teams require a major overhaul and some rebuilding. Edit: As far as where we could be headed. That's the mushy middle. Best case by keeping Miller our core ascends enough to be a regular playoff team. Personally i'm very curious with this team as to how we play once the puck drops in the playoffs and if i was Allvin would wait to see how that goes. Losing Miller for nothing isn't ideal - but worth the risk. Our first crack at it (albeit with a very different supporting cast) was very promising. I like this team. Pushing these decisions down the road makes a lot of sense. If bad habits/effort or personal issues come back next year before the TDL .... then blow it up. Trade Horvat. Trade Miller. Trade Myers. And re-set the rebuild. I'd be surprised if that's how things end up. Think we make the playoffs...and what happens next is going to be based on how that goes.
  12. Reality is there are not that many teams that can afford JT Millers next deal that are contenders right now. There are a lot that could use him as a re-tool with aging stars or like us - up and coming teams - and that's likely where he does sign. If it comes to pure money then he goes to a crap team with cap space galore as a piece in place during their rebuild which is either on the way or coming soon. 48-55 seems about right as far as total money goes. Clauses will lower the cap hit somewhat, as will going to a low tax team. To me it's a Zib deal plus a tiny bit for cap going up a little later on in his deal - minus one or maybe two years of term all done in bonus money for him meaning it's buyout proof and he gets his money even if he falls off a cliff and his team needs to buy him out...9.25 x 5 OR 8.675 x 6. Value of money early also makes it better for the player. Those are the deals our team could stomach. Maybe some other sucker will pay more - but feel he wants to stay and will leave some dollars on the table.
  13. This is true. But it doesn't happen often. Usually when a UFA is on the block he gets sat close to the TDL. On that though it did happen to us with Markstrom lol. Not that it mattered any ... Covid and the expansion draft looming ...
  14. It makes more sense. OEL is Edlers replacement basically. Also when QHs was out we saw that he can slip right in and get his PP points...the last year of his deal probably won't look great. Myers is a tough one too. We've only got him for two more seasons. To me that's a timeline that can't be ignored or we will be back to Stetcher/Del Zotto types on the right side. Keeping Myers and re-signing him as an aging vet at half the cap hit is an option i'd be fine with too. Players like him. Seems like a good teammate. On the third pairing he'd likely far surpass whatever else is out there ... it's just whom do we have or who can we get that bumps him down in two years?
  15. Every single team that's in the exact same position, year after year, almost always still get a grade A prospect, a decent roster player and a first rounder (or two seconds which in most cases is better) for a player as good as Miller...Obviously the offers weren't that great to not have Miller later ... could be better or the same next TDL.
  16. Lundqvist is about 60 spots below Rathbone right now .... Some were fine with that plus a ho-hum roster player and their first. Suppose that's better then nothing but i'd be fine with Miller back next year and rolling the dice. Unless we get a deal we just can't refuse, there is no rush.
  17. Yes it's usually cold, and over or under seasoned. Aside from that one bad chef is worse.
  18. I wonder if a bloated staff is going to paralyze action. Guess we will find out soon.
  19. TO at the TDL media guys suggested their two best prospects plus Kerfoot plus their first. Two smallish forwards and a 3C. The prospects are a second rounder and the 15th overall they got for Kapanen.
  20. I think it's 50/50 if he ends up a Canuck past this contract. Think something special could be brewing but maybe that's just indigestion lol. Allvin isn't going to come out and say "we are going to do everything we can do to re-sign - blank - player". He's going to do his job. One of Miller/Horvat or Brock is going to be moved the next 14 months.
  21. That was the exact same time i started to lose a lot of interest. Lost most of what was left once every team has to be represented. Now it's a little more like a circus then a best on best hockey game ...Having to toil through the 80's with 10 or so Oilers (and deservedly so) going to the all-star game wasn't much fun. John Scott getting in made me really happy though lol... Bettman ate some crap for that. Maybe it's just growing up with what your used too - but think the All-Star game lost some soul - and is closer to WWE then actual hockey. I might lose interest in the history of the sport if every team gets a Norris nomination. I suppose it depends if they also get a vote as well. But what would you do with teams like Detroit in the 2000's that had two finalists? Or NSH that split votes for awhile .., or even SJ with Vlasic and Burns not too long ago. A rebuilding team shouldn't get someone in just because either.
  22. Yes i think that Schenn should get his nomination for the Art Ross. Sarcasm aside, the best players that exemplify what an award is - not matter what - should be getting their due. All-star games lost me once every team had to be represented. Well actually lost me before that with their strange formats a couple times. The West Facing the East is the best way to do it. And it should be 3 periods of regular hockey without any weirdness added. Participation ribbons in pro sports, don't belong. Edit: The King Clancy and Masterson ... that's enough. Some teams have better candidates for both on their own teams.
