And my obsession with tax rates and the NHL. It's hobby horse i like to kick now and then because i really don't think enough is said about it whenever we see a guy signed on our team. At least Vancouver is an awesome city to live in if you have money. Especially for Canadian kids. They all want to live or tryout BC at some point. It's the best province, and one of the most special places in the entire world. Being born in BC is like winning the lottery.
-
I think the confusion is the first 500k is taxed at a lower rate. Then once you go from there doesn't take long to get to the full 37%. And also HKSR i hope i've found a recruit. The cap era is supposed to level the playing field but it really hasn't. If some CALI teams didn't win cups they'd have a big beef already. And FYI during the peak Sedin era BC was the same as Alberta. That helped us.
-
Are you looking at the right bracket? It's a sliding scale. Don't start at the league min because they let everyone make 500k and then start pounding on them after that. Once you get to 5 you've far surpassed it but the first 500k is taxed at a lower rate. At least that's what i read from the site you posted. What is so inaccurate? Look at Millers tax bracket i posted. And then look at what he's making. And see the difference. Over 3/4 of one million. That's a fact. And once you go up to 8.5 that's a ton of money left on the table. Just for fun try CAR. Or ARI. Or CHI. Or DET. Or WSH. Or Boston. Or PHI. There is only half a dozen teams that come close to Alberta.
-
I didn't see that. Go back and look at the thread. I did both his current salary and a 8.5 one. Playing in TB. Same as Vegas. Seattle. Florida and almost Dallas.
-
You literally showed me a site that confirms and verifies everything i've been saying. California and NY have the highest jock taxes - almost 50%. Those are the only NHL teams that are close to the Canadian ones.
-
Again - go look at it. They don't count the fist 500plus K earned in the 37% bracket. And even if you think it's not accurate - why would we argue over .6% a percent? Compared to 53% That's still over 16%. Miller has lost 850k per year every year he's been here (not considering escrow and covid)...
-
That's literally their job. Each state had different tax brackets for their athletes. And in Canada you pay both federal AND provincial taxes. Alberta's aren't that bad. Edit. I just looked at your site - 37% is there highest bracket yes - but they don't pay for their first 500k plus lol. Sorry. But galvingroups job is to make it easy for athletes to take a peak. It's accurate. 36.4% ... is what i keep saying...compared to 53%. zero state taxes no jock tax.
-
Like it or not, Canucks MTL, TO and OTT have really high taxes the highest in the league. Only US teams that are close are california and NY. The rest 10-16.6% advantage. Miller will cost us more to keep.
-
All the taxes are included for each individual team. Here's Miller in ANA (California and NY have the highest jock tax) CALCULATOR Enter your salary and then compare NHL teams tax rates. Or check out the chart below to see all of the NHL teams tax rates at your salary. Enter an Annual Salary Please enter an amount equal to or above the league minimum salary of $700,000. Here's Miller at 8.5 on TB and 8.5 in Vancouver...hmmm who's he going to want to play for? Same for Dallas, Seattle, Vegas, Florida. And for sh!ts and giggles half the US don't have jock tax that moves the needle past 40-42% tax too. CALCULATOR Enter your salary and then compare NHL teams tax rates. False information. Go and look at the Galvin Group calculator and see for yourself. MTL/TO/OTH and VAN are the highest taxed teams, virtually identical at 53%. Dallas/Vegas/Seattle/Florida and TB don't have state OR jock taxes. Give it a go - might be a big eye opener for you. 36.4%-53% is the range. Edit: I just gave it a go - Miller left close to 900k on the table - or should i say lost close to that each year he's been with us... wow. that's not 4% CALCULATOR Enter your salary and then compare NHL teams tax rates. Or check out the chart below to see all of the NHL teams tax rates at your salary. Enter an Annual Salary Please enter an amount equal to or above the league minimum salary of $700,000. Not a chance. We won't be paying him that unless it's maybe a 5 year deal. And i doubt he takes it either. Probably goes for a 6 year or 7 year deal at less but more over his career. And as far as those 5 teams (sorry i didn't add right lol) - only Seattle can actually make it work. So that helps us. Edit: It is a range though. Some teams taxed in the low 40's....one of those he probably gets some interest as well. So if we were to match - add 10%. 8.5 in quite a few US cities ... for us to match is another 850k....
-
It is and it isn't. 5 teams for sure have a huge advantage ... 36.4% vs 53%. Miller has lost over 500k each year he's played for us. Around 560k actually - not even getting into escrow. 16.6% is a lot of money. And it doesn't take long to get there either ... once your making a million or more really...it even hurts the league min guys. Gavin Group makes it easy to compare teams to teams. It's also why Stamkos took his deal. CALI teams are taxed almost as much as us, same with the New York team due to jock tax (but even that is less then 50%).... his rumoured 7 year SJ deal compared to what he got in Tampa - was virtually the same given the added extra year - and that was 3 or so more per season. That extra year actually makes a huge difference both ways for Dallas, Vegas, Seattle, Florida, Tampa Bay. It's easier to re-sign at a discount - AND it's easier to match take home guaranteed money on a 7 instead of and 8 year deal. If i was a GM - this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Limit those five teams to 7 year deals for their own players and 6 for others would even the playing field at least as far as UFAs go. But not the rest. Sure that St. Louis is still bitter about AP. And that TO fans aren't too happy either given what they had to pay to get Tavares and then sign their other guys. Aside from CAL and EDM and even they are still miles away from 36.4% (think 48.35 or so) ... CAN teams have it very tough compared to their US counterparts. At least half the players or there abouts are still from Canada.
-
It's actually worse for our team signing him to a 8.5 x 8 deal. It's ridiculous actually. I'd much rather him play out his deal - have a nice round or two in the post season, and say thank you very much, you made a big impression, see you later - then sign him to 8 years at 8.5. Caps going up one a year until owners are made whole. That's another 3 years. Cap will go up ... but ... no thx.
-
Yes and it's almost 2 years in Hertls case. What matters is how old they are when the deals done. Taking Miller until he's 38 and 7 months? Lol dumb dumb ta dumb. Only if the cap hit is freaking really reasonable - and it's a deal that is easy to buy-out cash wise. 7.5 x 8 would be super max deal. Some team might pay 10 x 5. Who knows. It's still 10 million less in guaranteed money - and an 8 year deal could be structured that he still gets most of that first 50 his first 5 years ... or at least it that used to happen all the time. Go back and look at Luongo lol. Why we need to suck it up - we for sure shouldn't have had him at that cap hit.
-
On an 8 year deal of course he does. 7.5 x 8 .... 60 million mostly front loaded (which means the money is worth way, way more - it gets invested) vs 9.25 x 5/6.. Likely gets bought out at the end - and if he wants becomes a UFA and adds to the stack. Most HHOFers are done by or around 37. I suspect that this could happen to both Miller and Horvat. Deals that are front loaded - that give them piles of extra cash and leave them with less then their interest has made the last two years of their deals. At that point they either go on LTIR... retire or get bought out.
-
Not Zin IMO. I've watched him since OTT drafted him. Miller doesn't have the same skillset.
-
It's actually pretty close. Good job op. If you look what Zin and Couture got ... both in high tax but not as high as our market - plus with cap going up a little sooner for Zin...minus the age difference and plus the tax differential. 9.275 is only a little high but not on a 5 year deal probably spot on -once taxes are evened out and ages etc and that it's signed a little later. Miller does fit our cap structure if we look for a Pearson type to replace Brock with on the right side. Higgins type. Edit: Most likely one of Horvat/Miller or Brock has to be traded to fit it all in and provide some depth breathing room / upgrades.
-
Well we can worry about that later lol. We won't be like TO. Nobody is getting 11 plus million ... are they?
-
At least we can enjoy Miller, QHs and even EPs finish - plus "win it for Bruce" - start climbing the 600 plus win ladder...

Alfie. Scored over 100 33/34. Drafted 133 overall. So there lol. There are enough examples of durable guys like Miller - who kept it up into their late 30's...even early 40's as in kept playing. Gary Roberts. There is no magical line. Each player needs to be looked at individually. Heck Lidstrom benifited probably more then any other player after they changed the rules. Sakic was 37 but we don't need him as an example do we. How about Blake Wheeler? There is absolutely nothing wrong with a 5 or even 6 year deal. More then that yes trouble for sure. They have all this off season and until next years TDL to make a decision don't they. -

Yes. Agreed. -
Yes i had fun. Very proud of these guys too. This is a team i get good vibes from...next season i think they decent to good odds at getting better - and great odds of staying about the same since Bruce came in. League has been given notice the Canucks have turned the corner. It's ok if Allvin decides to make some changes too. I think one major move max. And it's probably Brock.
-
Well he tied Berturzzi...that's really impressive. If he gets 100 points? Well that's a good game for him away now. Just wow.
-
Would you re-sign JT Miller to a 7.5m/7yrs extension?
IBatch replied to billabong's topic in Canucks Talk
Bingo. If that's the case we dodge a bullet. If he wants to do an EK, that's up to him.
