  1. Actually we are a top 3 team in our division. We are a better team then LA and Dallas right now as well ... absolutely. Under Bruce that is. Are we a contender? Of course not. But we are not without hope either. Our guys are still young enough to pull it off. This is a likeable team as is as well. For me, i'm curious to see what they can do in the post season. I'm sure Allvin is too. Brock is the low hanging fruit IMO. Not Miller unless a trade comes up that's just too tough to resist. Not Lundqvist and a late first lol. Bag of pucks. To me i'd be fine with losing Miller for nothing if the return is a nice little run next season and his cap space back. But think it's probably going to be Brock.
  2. Me too. Don't see much other choice either. Allvin at least has options.
  3. Team likely has to move on from one. But doesn't need to do it next season.
  4. Age. Expiring at 36 is palatable. The other thing is if Miller wants to win a cup, he's going to have to find an up and coming team with cap space, if it's just for the money then yes i suppose maybe he finds a sucker - that sucker likely has lots of cap space and well, his talents will be wasted like ARI. Sure teams can make a trade to fit him in so it's possible - but it won't be COL, or TB, of FLD or Vegas etc. Boston maybe. Bergeron has one more year left i think. Sigh. Miller does fit with our team too. But id saying no to a 7-8 deal is probably in our best interest. A five year deal maybe six ok.
  5. That's a little silly though given his age. A deal could be done front loaded - the future value of cash is always a big advantage, it's also easier to move later. The only player i can think of recently that got a term deal at his age was Alex P... he was a proven guy - his entire career, a cup winner - and most importantly he's a RHD - or defenseman. Who often have their best seasons in their early 30's. Forwards don't. Unless the cap hit is spread out at its something like 6.5 x 8 years, I just don't see this deal happening. He won't make that on the open market. Wonder what Kadri will get. Sure if he was 27/28 yes. Look at Tavares. That was his age ... and how he's doing now. He's regressing.
  6. All your saying is it's not realistic (to sign him long term). I think most agree on that. And also think most GMs do as well. Too risky. Sedins got two 4 year deals .... was that realistic? Think it's fair to say, a 5 year deal is realistic.
  7. Pavelski is likely the only one who's not ending up in the HHOF or at least close to it. Game has changed. Alfie, Sakic guys who scored over a 100 in the mid-late 30's ... i think we are too worried about what the market might be like for Miller. I highly doubt there will be a team in the league that will give him 7 years. 5 is most likely most (maybe ours too) their threshold. Maybe 6. Miller's next season who knows what will happen. Maybe he's injured. Maybe he scores 100. Maybe 70. There is zero guarantee a trade works out, and a lot of evidence that after 33/34 he will regress.
  8. Don't forget Jagr. Or Messier. He was elite right up until the time we signed him at 35/36.
  9. Yes it's pretty remarkable. EK did manage something only Orr, Potvin and Coffey did, which was being a top ten scorer 3 times or more. Did that with barely or around 80 points. Josi is hovering around 15th now with 90 ... which is really good for the sport. Right now we have 7 players that broke 100...and 4 more including Miller that could break it... simply remarkable. Last time that happened was the year before the dead puck era came in with force - 93/94. Federov and Gretzky had over 120... As for QHs...has me pretty excited given we've got him for five more years and he's only 22 lol. Feel with this team, he's going to keep breaking his own records now. I do think with quality of D's right now for sure is pushing these point totals up. Still have a nice compliment from the old guard, and and awesome group of young lads in - plus some more in the wings yet (Powers). Edit: Josi sits at the 26th most by a D in a single season as of right now...needs five more to get into the top 20...but see him getting into the top 25. The names around him are amazing company. Makar is 34th. He's got a very decent shot, to end up bumping a lot of guys out of the top 50 by the time he's all done. Edit: Coffey leads the pack with 9 seasons in the top 50. Would have been 10 when he was 34, his last Norris and Hart contender during the lockout shortened season. Crazy. Lidstrom isn't in the top 50 which may or may not come as a surprise to some. Borque is a close second to Coffey with 8 seasons...between 82-96 points but will get bumped on a couple by Makar likely. Potvin/Al Mac with four each. Several with 3. Really, you'd be hard pressed to find many D's who are currently in the top 50 who aren't in the HHOF or in Burns and maybe EK, ones that won't be later.
  10. Roberts was sure a thorn in our side during our early 90's rivalry. Definitely one of those tier down guys that at one point was flirting with the HHOF. Maybe without his neck breaking he could have but then again that's what turned him into a gym rat. Once he left Calgary my respect for him went up another notch. Nice opponent to do battle against ... running McLean was it 3 times in one game? My favourite Roberts moment, was when he completely took Ben Eager to task at 41...wish i could figure out to add the link lol. Eager was the guy who Bieksa made go mad vs SJ... a momentum shift in that series. Much bigger then both Roberts and Bieksa lol. Edit: His rookie year he scored 13 goals ... had 282 PIMs lol...by year 7 he'd scored 228 goals and averaged well over 200 PIMs...for sure he was on pace for the HHOF. Don't make power forwards like they used to do they? Tochett is another one...Shane Corson. Neely. Stevens. Clark - a long list of others... Miss the good old days sometimes ..
  11. One thing we do have a new edge with - is Allvin is not Jim Benning. Of course he has to honour the CBA (unlike the debacle with Yashin in OTT, where he was promised one thing, a new GM came in and said no way i'm not doing that) this one's in writing. Where Allvin has leverage is if Brock wants to remain with his pals and be part of its ascent. If Brocks agent is a dick like last time ... arbitration and a trade is likely. If he's not...i think Allvin would offer him a 4 year deal. Making what he is now and that's buying two UFA years. Edit: I really don't think Brock has earned much of a raise even on a long term deal. He's been injured 4/5 years now. Down the stretch twice when we could use him as well (no TT trade).... paying for his prime years comes at some risk - modest ones because of the injuries and bad summer prep or something (maybe coaching but his best season was last years - was a hint of what he could become, for sure one of or close to if not our best forward and not just points).... Brock takes one year then he's betting on himself. A career ending injury could occur. No contract to insure after is there? Taking a 24-27 4-5 year deal is also in his best interest as well.
  12. Rod Brindamour...Larionov (that's not fair to start adding HHOFer..Makarov too though lol. I do think that they guys who start top tier have the highest chances of maintaining it until they are 37 or so. I also think every team can afford one aging vet who's cap doesn't quite pay for what he's actually doing. Pavelski of course added to the list. Only 20 NHLers have scored 60 as a 37 year old ... almost all are in the HHOF or likely end up there ... Steve Sullivan and Roberts and Lang could be added to the list too. Brunette, LeClair and Ferraro as well. Reality is Miller would be in great company if he scores 50-60 as a 36/37 year old really as well. Hasn't happened often 50ish times 36, 44 37, mostly the same guys too.
  13. aGENT 8.5 x 5 would be just fine wouldn't it. Guess we will find out this off season. Either by action or inaction as to what's going to happen next.
  14. MG didn't have to draft anyone for six years. Not like it hasn't happened before. Nonis and Burke gave him everything he needed - and he added some good things and some not so good things ( Booth and Ballard plus our first with all his powers of clause kingdom, like adding a 6 million plus forward today and 6 million plus D). QHs is 22...EP 23...Horvat/Brock/Demko in their prime age range. Guess it comes down to what type of team we are in the post season more then anything. Sedins managed one series win once they got to that age (with Naslund and Linden still) plus one run. That's it. Funny thing ... bubble team did that one already. I'm willing to wait and see what this team can do in the post season before passing too much judgement. Tearing it down ... well sure it's an option too. Doesn't guarantee this team is going to be a contender either way. Yes our D needs work. That said it's not nearly as terrible as some make it out to be either.
  15. Yes. Its a bit of a pickle isn't it. I get that we've had several good trades all-time that have made things work .... but not one made them work right away. Linden our best one, took years to settle things. Butcher probably the best for a quick patch but i'm not at all expecting that sort of return. If you need to go back decades even to find any ... that also says something doesn't it? Edit: Hate to even say this. But there is another route and that's to use our pick this year. And trade one of Brock or Garland, make a push for Manson and Deslaruiers. Would change the complexion of our team. And give these guys a real shot,
  16. And all of TB superpowers - yet it was Vasilevsky that is saving their season. Sure did when we played them. Yes you need a top ten goalie. Our team strengths are down the middle and goaltending plus youth and age. NSH couldn't win with the best all around D core and a top 3-5 goalie in Rinne. Can't have it all with the cap. Sure we could be better balanced. COL has to win this year or next year or they are f!cked cap wise. Things aren't so bad. We are a 2nd for Lumme away from being a great team. Allvin is just as likely to screw it up as he is to improve things.
  17. Team just needs a couple robbery trades and we bump from a 105 or so team with a year of Bruce - to a 115 or so team. We do have good things right now. Very little surgery is required other then waiting out the rest of Bennings cap tomfoolery and what they've already done. You don't trade Miller because your worried about his next contract. Realistically only a couple bad and a couple middling teams (like ours) can actually even afford him. He's not going to a "contender". And wouldn't want to maybe anyways, back to the 3rd line C in quite a few cases. There is nothing at all wrong with letting things play out with the hand Allvin was dealt. It's a decent one really ... possibility as good as the one MG was handed. What did he do?!' Nonis waited and waited for all the cap to shed ... and he took his former player (agent) and offered him 20 freaking million - 20 ... for two years close to 40 years old lol. Sundin was never a top tier star in the 90's...just a blue chip one. At the end of his career. Wow. We can be patient.
  18. Reality ... well the reality is Sutter was the biggest loss of games. Go look at Vegas and see what they've had to endure. Like an entire season without Miller or EP or Demko really. They've barely had any games with all their best players. And i'm happy for them! As in hope they don't make it lol. Karma. Have no business being that good that soon.
  19. I don't think he's going to get a contract like that. In the open market. He knows he's not going to a contender either, rather a team with cap space. I'm not terribly worried about Miller staying with us. He's earned his raise and he will get it. Zibanejad minus a couple years in term given his age is his likely baseline. We might need to add a little bit for taxes but not much, NYR also pay high taxes. Plus we are the team that gave him a chance and is going to make him rich as f!ck. You'd be hard pressed to find a better option for him winning wise as well.
  20. Bingo. Manson is a great target for us. And agree, if we had a Willie Mitchell type paired with Hughes - it would be one of the best in the league. Edit: Know it's not so simple as a video game (last and only Hockey one i played, in my early 20's was NHL 93/94 or something like that...table hockey was more my thing) .... but if we could trade Brock or Garland for something decent later, save the cap and use it for Manson ... (and keep Myers) ... i'd like our chances very much over the next 3-4 years.
  21. Great story. Saluting fans between whistles. Not many players actually become legends before they retire, he was for sure one of them. Last one to do that for the younger generation was probably Lidstrom. For me it was Ray Borque. Even though he wasn't in Boston anymore, his brief time in COL actually made Vancouver fans (and COL was one of our rivals back then) root for them. At least that's how i felt. I'm just glad i did get to meet Lafluer in person. It was actually surreal even though he'd be fully retired for a couple of years. Edit: Beliveau left some huge shoes. Lafluer actually did a great job filling them. Not that anyone could really.
  22. Good post. It's easy to look at stats on other teams and imagine how a player could play with your team. There is many examples on both sides about how things could turn out (for the better or the worse)...probably averages out close to 50/50. Managers. Have a tough job. Where we are in our cycle is also an unknown. To me this team has a bit of a PHI vibe around Giroux. Maybe a shot at a final. Then just the middle of the row team until we have to blow it up again. But i'm curious enough to see how we can do next season not to give up on that opportunity. Everything is pointing up for next season. Why kill that? Just for a maybe close to when Demko and QHs are moving on or re-upped? No thanks.
  23. The way i see it is Allvin doesn't have much of a choice other then some minor surgery. I don't think we are going to be contenders either way. But what i do see is a modest path to give our team some playoff reps. Major surgery comes with too much risk - at least that's how i see it. A few lopsided trades could push us into a contender. Not expecting that either. Rather a team that is good enough to compete with the big boys but not a top team. That's ok. My biggest curiosity is how we are in the post season. It's a big unknown. LA was a bad/middling regular season team. There is always hope.
