Looking 8 years into Miller's new contract - with numbers (of course)!
IBatch replied to HKSR's topic in Canucks Talk
Problem with the cap world is we can't have everything. Best you can do is what COL/TB/FLD have achieved. Mckinnons deal is going to implode that team, Kadris will also make an impact but they've got their two year max window this year and next. TB ... Stamkos' deal after tax was the same he was reportedly offered in TO, but less then SJ, same overall money though given the extra year. Maybe this age, maybe it's two cups in a row, maybes it's just saving it for the playoffs but they've been mediocre the last month. Watching the games there isn't many teams that i've seen "dominate" us all season - aside from two Green blow outs. We are very good 5 x 5. Now that our PP is clicking, and our PK average or middling we are very good team. Green focused on possesion, top five in the league when he was around this year, Bruce loosened the reigns, made it more fun, and it's showing. Our strengths for sure is down the middle. 3 top six C's...It's hard to say how this team would be without Miller next season...we'd be getting a young RHD back and some pieces (please no Lundqvist - Schnieder of course would be interesting)...our record this season without him scoring is pretty bad until EP finally kicked in. And Brock is back to his normal production as well (.85ish PGP) under Bruce. Also think Miller pushed Horvat this second half. Friendly internal leadership competition perhaps. Miller should be good until he's 33/34ish...as in capable of maintaining his production. It fits with our window with QHs, Demko. That said i don't think we can afford him and Horvat and Brock. One should probably be traded next year. If the right deal is available maybe sooner. OEL might not be putting up the points we hoped he would - but has shown when QHs is out - he's capable of doing just that. Plus is a bit of a safety net. I'm not as horny about the R side as some. Feel as long as we have 5 legit top four guys it would work itself out. Do agree we aren't a contender even under Bruce. But also feel that if EP keeps it up like he has under him (45 goal 90 plus point pace), and Brock gets back to playing like he did next season - we could do something special next season. Don't get many chances in this league. We can still trade Miller next TDL and re-set the rebuild if we need too. Edit: Oh on Miller - maintaining production i mean around a PPG guy. Maybe he's got one more 90 plus season in him but i wouldn't wager it. -
Was thinking this too. Bubble magic Roberts...five game winning streak in the playoffs is now small thing. MIN is a good team this year...they were also a top five defensive team that year too. Won't be easy. Guys have played and not lost in regulation or OT in 7 games. Like game 7's each and every one of them. Keep the foot on the gas and good things will happen.

Canucks have been doing this for a very very very long time. The WCE team did it ... only two years of the peak Sedin era really. Watched the Linden teams do this often enough in the 90's too...80's well EDM lol... beat us up pretty good. So won't comment. That said it was a back to back, and we got a point. We aren't mathematically done yet. And it's pretty easy to blame Benning and Green on the season. I doubt Bruce would have had it much better the first 20 games with that much roster change. It wasn't Greens fault EP and Brock didn't come to play. Or that we didn't have Motte and lost our entire PK. Do feel he'd have done a better job though ... and for sure we'd be in... -

It's all about money it seems. If i guy isn't producing he's a bum. If he is like Miller then half the fans freak out and want to trade him. Because of his next contract. Excuse me if i can't pine for the good old days when if a player someone identified with, they'd get his jersey. And wear it proudly a long time after he left or retired. Get it's the times. But do miss that. Ryan Walter. Who would get his jersey? Well someone did. Maybe they were a habs fan too. Or maybe just happy he was still plugging away for us near the end of his career on the fourth line. Dickinson and Poolman. How many jerseys do they sell do you think? Aside from family members that is. Not many. -

No doubt. QHs is only freaking 22 years old. Guys awesome. So is EP for that matter. Brock is doing what he can to get us into the playoffs too. Don't get why fans are quick to turn on our players - well i do it's always cap. Somethings, you just can't put a price on. Right now it's hard not to be proud of this group. Podz keeps getting better as the season goes on, Garland has done his job, same as OEL. Myers still leads the team in plus minus (but he's not a top four RHD ... ok then) ... Miller and Horvat in their primes are showcasing what could happen to the younger players. Patience. Team needs to sit back - rinse and repeat. Still has cost controlled options next season. I'm sure the West is sighing in relief we didn't win another one last night. -

Of course they do. But just won 2. Do you think they will win six in a row? I do not. This was a simple math thing ... was wondering if anyone wouldn't get that lol. It's ok. If a train travelled at 100 and another was doing 60 etc etc when would they meet blah blah ... i didn't always get those either. -

Tough loss. It's not over yet. Five more games. A lot can happen. Doubt LA wins six in a row. Just have to keep winning and good things will happen. -

So i guess the Sedins were chumps then. Because the guys from the 90's in their 30's sure made them look like it. Guys all you have to do, if you want, is trace it back. It's not that difficult. Game of course is "faster" ... no redline no extra pass. Zubov at 37. Sakic too. I'm going to agree to disagree. The talent level was much higher at the top level back then. The tier below maybe was similar. Bure today? Mogilny or Federov or Selanne? People have a love affair with Sundins last season and he barely registered in the 90's. -

I get it. But no i don't think it's the best we've ever seen. The league has bloated itself for a very long time. If a 37 year old Sakic, can beat out a Sedin in his prime ... i'm sorry i just don't see it. And put EP back into the 90's or Brock or anyone but maybe Podz, Horvat and Miller - they'd just be crushed. They were crushed. Unless you were otherworldly like Mogilny, Bure, Federov etc - you couldn't make do. How good was Iginla in the 90's? It's not hard to trace it back. Sorry Tas i disagree. Talent was better back then. It's never just been about skating. -

Ten guys scored 100 or more .... Wayne's last season at 33 leading the league. Federov best year 120 and Wayne at 130 - on a terrible LA team. Yes it sure was. Talent level is just starting to amp up again. Unlike the 2000's where the guys who were part of those 10 guy crew in their early 20's were still in the top ten or leading the league in scoring in their 30's. Sakic had his last 100 point season at 37 in the mid-late 2000's ... Jagr, Sundin, Kariya, Selanne, Pronger, Niedermayer, Lidstrom etc. Was a really weak decade , same with the 2010's...league bloating from 21-24 teams to 32 for sure didn't help with that. Edit: Redline , with guys draping on their backs ... hooked and held at every turn. It sure was a different era. And if you want to even up save percentages it still holds up. What's 4-7% difference really? Even 10% which of course it is not. The 90's dead puck era...started after the shortened season. 93/94 was the last high scoring year. Iginla couldn't do it in the 90's but was one of the leagues best players in the 2000's. Francis also scored over 100 in his 30's ... so did Jagr. Forsberg straddled both decades. Zubov scored 73ish points after the lockout at 37 years old. Those guys would of had an absolute hey day with the rules and the way the game is called today. Not like the goalies were that bad. Edit: If Miller and all the guys ahead of them score 100...this will be the first season since then it was managed ... nice that talent is finally getting back to that point. Still has a ways to go though. -

93/94 team scored 279 goals let in 276. Enough to face a true contender in round one. Losing Nedved wasn't easy for us.... but the return helped set us up for quite the run. Also Miller ... he's going to stay. Why wouldn't he? Does he really want to go to a different team where he's not the man? He said no thanks to that already. In a round about way. At least i hope that's the case. 5 years at 8.25 seems fair for both sides. -

Look at the 93 team .... Bure 60 Nedved 38 Linden 33 Courtnall 31 Ronning 29 Adams 25 (in 53 games) Ward 22 (70 games) Momesso 18... Thats why it's the team that scored 343 or so goals and set the high bar. Not many teams break 300 anymore. Both Naslunds and Peak Sedin era could to manage much more then 280... -
Nope. Figure he's earned a modest raise on what Garland got on a medium to long term deal. That's it. Edit: If he doesn't like that - then take him to arbitration or just do his one year QO deal. We still have him for two more years (rights). Team has options. Brock ... well he's mercurial for sure. Also fine with a trade.

Bo is back? Let's go 6-2 EP -
Pretty sure that's why too. That said i don't think moving on from MG was a mistake either.
-
Wish i knew. Myers is leading our team in plus minus right now ... 19. I think he's going to be fine until his contract is up too. Don't care what people think about him but to me he's a top four RHD in this league ... look at Trouba lol. Or Dumba. Got to be careful over whom your drooling over (Lundqvist doesn't crack the top 100 prospects ..Rathbone has moved up 20 spots and now around 60)... EPs probably 2 years out still before all the training wheels come off but who knows. Horvat's line does play against stiff competition ... as does EPs of course and Millers ... that's our team strength right there with Demko. Weakening that doesn't seem like a logical move. Manson would help a lot. I'd trade Brock and take a run at him as a UFA. Basically trading Brock for Manson. Where the cap space comes next is a concern though...but it would give us one heck of a chance next season. Edit: Plus whatever return we get. Think that our team can afford to wait until next season to make the major moves. Miller at the TDL is obvious if something goes wrong.
-
Yes i think it is a good idea. If we leave him open for the TDL then we have options. If things are going well say 1/3 way through, maybe start the talking. Also it's totally ok to keep open dialogue even a couple months ago. I think Allvin did do that (saw a report somewhere but it could just be supposition). Reality is this: Next season we can come back with virtually the same team. Should we? I don't know - but i do know a lot of roster change probably scuttles our season. Even with Bruce. Reality is cap wise, we can't afford Brock, Horvat and Miller ... maybe we can by trading Garland but that actually to me at least, seems like a mistake. Think Garland had proved himself good enough 5 x 5, and also think with the same chances he'd be on the scoreboard more. Brocks of course much younger and one of our home drafted guys. I guess it all comes down to the returns and the cap hits. Cap is great IF it's used well. Teams have to overpay to fill holes. No team is built from the draft alone.
-
Oh and the right direction is always winning. We've been heading in the right direction since the start of December. Too bad we were a bottom dweller before then. I believe what we are seeing is a team turning the corner. Imagine if Brock was the same player he was last season .... man we'd be in great shape for next year - and Allvin shed the cap required to make sure he's got that option as well. That little tweaking doesn't look like a lot but it frees up around 2.25k with league min replacement for Motte. That said IF Allvin decides on dismantling ... i suppose that fine too. Just don't see it happening. Ferraro said it takes a year for players to fully adjust and i see that happening now. The adjustment period is mostly over...
-
.660 or something like that since Bruce took over. It was always going to take sometime for this team to gain some traction give the momentous amount of turnaround in the top six and top four the past couple season. Green is gone, Benning is gone. Allvin only has one big decision to make this summer and that's Brock. The remainder is cost controlled next season. Sure some minor things as well but nothing urgent. It's not easy on team culture moving too many guys in and out. Yes Miller has us wondering what's up... As for now, we've been playing more then well enough to earn a nice comfy slot next season. A tiny bit of core ascension, more then offsets a little regression by whomever. Because the core is young. Best PP in the league the last 35/36 games too. PK is holding its own. Our differential is more then respectable even with Greens efforts to start the year. You don't get many shots in this league - and the teams in and around where we've been playing, not one would anyone be shocked or surprised to see win a cup. I'm also very curious is that bubble magic was a one off, or if this team is similar to the Linden teams - as in even better come the post season.
-
UFA signings were bad we agree on that - especially the timing of them and spending to the cap to be "competitive" when we could of just been worse for a year or two. It went from bad to worse with covid. Brocks deal, at the time, seemed fair. What he'd accomplished earned it too. Also on those year or two ... well "8 long years" crowd can't chime in saying we should have been worse, and we can't complain that much watching Miller work towards a Hart nomination (if by some miracle we make the playoffs - not much different then what Hall did in NJ). He won't win though, too many other guys killing it this year, unlike Halls heroics. Maybe we are lucky he didn't have the cap lol... well actually he did that season, he didn't like what Brocks camp wanted on a long term deal and went ahead and spent it somewhere else (and the fanbase went ape$&!# thinking there was none left for Brock lol). Of the 3, he did sign the right guy to a long term deal in QHs. Folks also turned on EP this year and QHs last season - that's the part i'm not totally ok with. It's a little sad that the cap world has taken away some of the fandom in the game. Keller was awful in ARI too there are 100 other NHLers out there really we could pick on too ... not so much this season. Ups and downs aren't uncommon with young players. What Brock will be like in the future is anyones guess, for me he's earned his deal two out of 3 years that's it. Buying UFA years might help us or might not. Middle ground is around what he's making now (less preferably) for 4-5 years. A calculated risk that he could return to last years form. Best value is often found on the blue chippers in the 4-6 range. Look what Garland got. Nobodies complaining about that deal (yet anyways). St. louis is and was loaded with guys in that range. What i think happens is rinse and repeat with the same lineup and Brock gets a one year deal - either his QO offer or maybe arbitration so a modest raise to 6.35. But again anyones guess. Mier at 10 looks pretty bad too doesn't it? At least that loophole is taken care of. Silly rule. Creates inflation and problems for GMs later.
