Hmmm....think it was Sutter. Did he play I can’t re-call ha ha ...
-
Wouldn’t worry about it too much. TG knows how to motivate and push JVs buttons and it’s not like he hasn’t brought it on himself to sit out - with this bottom six you have to earn it. Adding a chip on his shoulder couldn’t hurt right? JV can be a play driver - but he can just float around for a few games too, and in a short series that isn’t ok. Guys aren’t going to hurt themselves in a pre-seaosonish exhibition game... JV watching from the press-box has to be a motivator...
-
I’d like to agree with this - problem is will JV throw his weight around? TG seems to know how to push his buttons the most, and I’m sure he’s embarrassed to have to watch the exhibition game from the pressbox. Adding a chip to JVs shoulder couldn’t hurt that’s for sure. And then unleash him. TG went through the same issues himself as a player - it took him some time to realize how to play and succeed in the NHL and believe he sees a lot of the same things in JV. I’m sure he will play against MIN but won’t be given any slack if he’s not playing at the right level - unlike some of the vets on the team...who have actually earned the slack or the benefit of the doubt. Wouldn’t read too much into this one “pre-seasonish” game. Hitting was down on both sides ... players didn’t want to risk too much before the real show begins ....

That said the team seems to have a lot of potential given what the young guys on it so far have accomplished is a lot more then anyone other then a young Linden team did. The Sedins were slow off the mark...and a liability in the post season their first couple cracks too ...
-
Back then the team didn’t have the stomach to go their again after Makarov (that plus Jagr told everyone he wouldn’t report so don’t bother drafting him ... except in secret told PIT if they did he would come because he wanted to play with Mario)....
-
Same with the early 90’s teams ... sure we didn’t draft Momesso and Ronning but they were only five years older then Linden (so like Horvat is to EP)...Bure a year younger then Linden etc...and then Nedved. Lumme was 24 when Linden was 20...same with former early first rounder Dana Murzyn...same with Kirk McLean. That’s a lot of key guys (9 to be exact) within 5-6 years of each other. Oh yeah Gerald Diduck would have been 25 when Linden was around 20 too. So that’s 10 guys ...

Why not just clear Loui’s contract by attaching a 1st like the Leafs did?
IBatch replied to EP40.'s topic in Canucks Talk
Me too. Just take our freak’n medicine. No way we’d be going after TT this off season with a healthy BB. We have other fish to fry like Markstrom, Tanev, JV and AG... plus overages. Deal with those first - the only way I see us signing all of these is if LE leaves which he is most definitely not doing next season. We just have to suck it up and wait a year or two - and we’d be much better off committing 5 x 5 money for a top for D replacement anyways...save it for that and the cost will be more like Myers contract anyways. We don’t have the cash. But will in two years for sure. That’s when we should be plugging holes and then we might not have any holes in our top six anyways just from Podz, Lind and Hogs... -
Really hope OJ gets in and doesn’t look out of place. That would be huge for us and start putting a lot of things to rest either way. It’s a tune up game and hope TG uses the time wisely. Sure he already has a good idea who to play in MIN - would shuffle the fringe cuts into this lineup ... OJ, Ferland, McEwen, LE and even JV...

Not all Conn Smythes are created equal, that was one of the better ones I’ve seen ...top five for sure. Boston had no business beating TB either. Roy’s 1993 cup performance will likely stand as the greatest goaltending performance ever, but TT was pretty high up there too. Sawchuk also had a couple (one his GAA was crazy low) too but wasn’t around to see it. For the ones I’ve seen I’d rank as follows: 1. 93 Roy 2. TT 3. Ranford (was also insane at the worlds .942sp, might have been the best there was for a brief moment in the early 90’s) 4. Quick (Like Ranford a short time at the top) 5. 86 Roy 6. 2001 Roy The list is a bit subjective. Honourable mention 87 Hextall. Edit: Since this is a GDT - can’t wait to see how some of the younger players do tonight. OJ especially if he’s played .... really curious to see how he’s playing now compared to a couple of live games I saw in Laval his first AHL season...

That is ironic. Guess you know both sides of it .... the 97-98 Detroit teams used to pick one particular star and deliberately try and knock them out of the series - either off their game or out on a stretcher (Shanny’s own words). That worries me a little - EP and QHs will be baptized by fire for sure ... and I for one wish we had a played like you in your youth there just in case but know that’s changed.
-
AV had us playing disciplined hockey - let’s face it we couldn’t put a pea past Thomas that series. We lost with special teams - got something like 2 power plays for everyone of theirs (refs won’t call much more then that even if the other team are acting like animals), think they might have outscored us with their penalty kill too (short handed goals) ha ha. It’s not like we didn’t have our fair share of guys that weren’t soft and willing to mix it up because we did for sure .... Thomas is in the record books for most saves in a final. He was the difference way more then whatever morale cost we lost to Sedin just sitting their waiting for another call our way. Ref probably would have liked to give us an unsportsmanlike for not sticking up for ourselves just as much as calling one on the Rat. We lost. I’m over it and have been for a while. Sucked for sure but it is what it is. Wasted two great years coming up against all-time epic goalie playoff performances - up there with Ranford and Roy’s .... (Thomas and Quicks)
-
Absolutely- with the exception if someone runs or does a dirty play against anyone - especially our star players - in that case hopefully the reaction will is immediate and the penalty kill worth it. ANA won their only cup being the bullies - wish we had that sort of lineup but that was probably the last time we’ll ever see a team like that and not expecting that sort of play - just want to see instant push-back.... Horvat needs to set the tone too, shouldn’t always have to be Miller towing the line - and think he will.
-
Good take DIR. I think JB was one year off on his deals - like most experts even he wasn’t sure that we’d be ready this soon and that resulted in a log jam. Not a big one at that next year the money will be there for EP and QHs as long as he doesn’t go for it too hard to keep TT and mess it up a little further. If he can somehow show-horn him into the lineup without jeopardizing our future cap with buy-outs and guys we can use on ELCs I’m all for it ... if not better just to stick to the plan and wait it out. Eventually money will be available for one or two top four D’s... and with Seattle likely getting more then their fair share maybe we could get one from them post ED at a decent price (that’s how they will end up getting their extra picks and prospects if they were smart about it)...

Don’t mistake discipline for turning the other cheek. If we could have put a few more past Thomas we’d still be glowing over it rather then picking apart what went wrong - we did have something like 2 for everyone 1 PPs against Boston. One thing I will say is our 89-95 team would have cleaned any current or past decades teams clock including Boston easily in the ally and wouldn’t have put up with stars getting deliberately run over/cheap shotted. (Although how many times did Roberts run McLean in 94 and how many times did Linden turtle during that rivalry? - the team was also guilty of not doing enough at times back then too)... All the teams were tougher and rougher back then, the game has changed. Chara is the lone ex-enforcer ... Reaves wouldn’t have made the top 25 list in 89-2010 and is now the leagues reigning bad boy. The only thing I can’t stomach is zero retaliation. Miller better be ready ... same with Myers or whomever on defense and it shouldn’t have to be Stetcher. Beagle, Ferland, Roussel, Pearson, Toffoli, Benn better bring it. JV too. Horvat too. I don’t think it’s the coaching- it’s the players themselves more then anything. I doubt he’s telling the guys not to have each other’s back - TG played in that era and knows what it’s like - but I’m sure he knows this team wins games on special teams - and one of EPs superpowers is how many penalties he draws. To win with this team (5 x 5 isn’t a strength yet) taking constant retaliation penalties won’t work and Green knows that. That said sending a message is a must too. Every team out there will want to knock EP and QHs off their game .... maybe a player might even want to knock them out of the series too and we have to be prepared for that and ready to limit it so what your bringing up is definitely valid. The team isn’t nearly as soft as it was a couple years ago .... hopefully that will translate well this year and we can go on a nice run.

(Proposal) Blockbuster trade proposal
IBatch replied to Gator's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
As much as Sedins meant to this fan base we don’t need another brother duo if this is the cost. Markstrom on his own will likely be more valuable player then J Hughes will for 3-4 years .... AG is our future middle six center and Lind is now probably our second best forward prospect. Schneider is like LE now, but a goalie handcuff - don’t need two of those ... -

First thing I thought was how do they get Markstrom if he isn’t even signed yet with us. Sign and trade ha ha. -
(Proposal) Assets to Kraken for Expansion Consideration
IBatch replied to Fanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Good post. If they do that they could re-coup some ground that Vegas got. One thing about GMs though is they don’t seem to be quick learners - been talked about and reported that we won’t see nearly if any extra back-door dealings like Vegas enjoyed .... I’d be a little surprised if we didn’t see some of that too which could affect Seattle’s strategy somewhat - that and cap issues as top four guys usually come with a price tag and you know the one teams will leave hanging will have the most expensive price tag. Fortunately for them they will also have loads of inexpensive forwards to help with that too, both AHLers like Lind and third liners - but at 4-5 million a piece it will limit how many second line defenseman they can take...can’t see Seattle starting without a decent team. -

Nice list. Pearson might I suppose, but they’d have 48 hours to get a feel to as whether or not they’d want to waste a pick on a guy who’s a UFA anyways and can just sign with anyone even if they pick him. Assuming the Canucks haven’t traded him already and he’s even available on our team. Tanev on a one year deal means we don’t have to protect him either...which in almost certain will be what both sides agree on. Which is great as then we’d have another protection slot. Demko definitely is trade bait the moment Markstrom signs - I’m not sure any other team would be willing to use their one goalie spot on him though - although it’s possible for sure. OTT and Detroit keep coming up for good reason, Detroit has a good prospect coming up but won’t need protection...OTT ... well you just never know. Makes sense to keep Demko too just for a sacrifice... I’d like to see Lind get a protection spot too I suppose that depends on whether TT is on the team or not. -
Alexander Edler nominated for King Clancy Trophy
IBatch replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Great nomination. He’s a deserving candidate. On the rough stuff above - Edlers had some beautiful hits over the years - that’s something I hope by the time he’s done we can replace. Some big shoes to fill. Ohlund was rougher - maybe a result of his era ... will never forget when he went to TB and how it took some time for that division to realize you don’t come into the zone against Ohlund with your head down or unawares ... seemed like twice a week he was levelling some poor fool. Elder filled his shoes quite nicely... and get the OJ pick. If he can do it this team is going to be really really good. THN still had him as one of our three blue chip prospects this season (Madden and Podz were the others) so there is still hope.
