  1. When they played Boston, wouldn't have minded if they won, playing TB easy to hope they lose. Really didn't mind them so much growing up, and enjoyed the 93 playoffs (actually rooted for LA though) ... it's lovely that we can enjoy watching them lose and know that they've actually waited longer to win a cup then us too. Their reputations for being chokers is growing. SJ Sharks were like that in the 2000's.
  2. Let's give them some slack. They've gone from Boston to TB ... not exactly an easy first round for them. No gimmies that's for sure. The Sedins never had to deal with a division quite like TO has. SJ, that's about it. LA won their cups as 8th and 7th seeds.
  3. Imagine how Schenn feels too. But at least he's made his millions. QHs shouldn't be too upset, he's still getting a pretty hefty salary for an RFA. EP earned 600 or so K less his first three years, and likely making 2.5-3 more QHs final 3 years of six - BUT, QHs like Horvat, will enter his UFA years a young man and totally cash out, just like Doughty and EK did.
  4. As far as Point goes, he was the teams second line center, for sometime actually, and filled in for Stamkos when injured (happened often enough). Very deserving of his deal. And they managed to get great cap relief before his legacy contract. He's an under the radar guy. A proven playoff performer as well. EP is actually a very good comp with Point. Do wonder how EP would do with better wingers. Something other top centres often have. Doesn't feast on the power play like some either. This was his break out year. And two seasons in a row now without an injury. Hasn't had to play a full season often, and only one playoffs so far. Durability was for sure a legit question mark early in his career and may still have some validity. In the end if he signed for 12 million, it still would be tough not to be happy. This team lives or dies depending on what he does. More so than QHs or Demko. Believe he will be happy with a mid 10's deal. And the club won't be impacted negatively either. Agree with Spook anything less then 10.5 is a win for the club, in the same way it was a win for the club signing Miller to 8. For sure below market value as an RFA/UFA 8 year deal. And hope it's an 8 year deal not a 6 or 7. Not many players in our history I could say the same thing about that way. Including the Sedins. We didn't really know what we had with them at the same age. Edit: As an aside, Miller for sure left money on the table. The team didn't think they could sign him ... after his 99 point season. And were stoked they could. And he did leave money on the table given what others got paid (Kadri). Huberdeau. Johnny Hockey. MT. etc etc. Back then most thought his salary would start with a 9. Or around that. That one million plus left was leadership. Horvat did not follow suit at all. Let's hope EP does the exact same. It takes a group of guys willing to sacrifice their bank accounts to win a cup. A big part of the elephant in the club house, is overpaid players eating up cap space. It's a problem a lot of teams have. Brock should be 30/35 given his pay scale. Garland is actually close to par. Beau well if he scores 40 he's fine actually. Schenn shouldn't have to be a guy making league minimum to balance the books and keep his career alive. There are a lot of Schenn's in the league. Truly think the NHLPA and the League need to work out a system when guys seriously underperform compared to their pay, should be allowed an exit. Not a buyout. But the player loses his salary and the team can bank that cap or something like that. There isn't a job i've ever been part of, in the private sector, where a person is allowed to so seriously underperform and get his paycheque anyways. The system isn't perfect that's for sure. But it could be improved on and same with the product. Expansion needs to be put on ice for a decade at least. Finally the talent is catching up to the number of jobs.
  5. You bet. It was nice that both Barzal's and MT's contracts were brought up as comps, and agree it likely will end up somewhere in the 10-11 and that is actually a good deal for us as well. Also consider it a win if it comes in less than 10.5 (which seems fair for sure). EP deserves to be the highest paid player on the team. If they do it based on net income ... to earn the same as MT, the Canucks would need to offer EP low 11's .. not sure if they'd also give him 68 million in signing bonuses, that give him a substantial amount of his money upfront, he can then watch it grow a ton before his deal is up. Agents and GMs have ways to negotiate lower cap hits and bigger wallets for the players for sure, front loading does this, as do clauses for sure. 36.58% versus 53% tax bracket is quite the difference in net pay. At 9.5, it's 1,599,579 less taxes in Florida than Vancouver. It's a pet peeve of mine. Miller's deal looks even better once you consider that he's making what guys in TB, FLD, Dallas, Seattle and Vegas do at around 6.7...we'd be stoked to have him at that price, and he's at a below market value price at 8 x 7 . He's also lost over 550k per year on his current deal since been traded from TB. NMC are so important to players in no state tax arenas, and why TB deals looks cheaper then it really is. They for sure are making the same or more than what they'd make in TO (Stamkos) for example, adding a couple million per year. To me anyone who wants to stay and play in Vancouver at cap hits that seem fair at first glance - before tax considerations, need to be treated like gold from a fans perspective. COL pays just over 40%. Same with CHI and PIT. And WSH. Only CAL and EDM pay taxes similar or even less then some US teams (47.6%)... Canucks, TO and MTL are the hardest hit. As an aside, during peak Sedin era our taxes were the same as the Alberta teams, which are 5.4% less. One thing worth noting it is a sliding scale. BC's 750k tax bracket is 47.15%... Still a big difference though. For EP if the team starts at 9.75 x 8 it wouldn't be so bad until taxes are considered. If that becomes a sticky part on EPs side, well 11.25 isn't unreasonable really.
  6. Thankfully Barzal and co also have jock tax so aren't too far behind where Vancouver are. For sure they won't want to low ball. To me it's not lowballing starting with a 9 and working from there. It's one season. Will EP bank on another full season and 100 plus points and go for broke? Or take a deal before the season is done. Risks for both sides.
  7. My bet is he signs for 10.25 x 8. Think that's reasonable, won't hurt the team, is fair too. He's not Mathews scoring a ton of goals. and he's not Barkov stopping a bunch of goals either. Believe we overrate our players and can't help it.
  8. Given the cap situation at the time, im sure JB offered him the same deal QHs had - it made no difference to our cap so close to 8 x 6. He absolutely bet on himself, another 500k wouldn't have made much difference. Too bad JB didn't manage to get him on the QHs special though...that said we aren't quite ready to truly compete anyways, and this way instead of maybe only 8-9 years, we can have him for 14 so no complaints. And yes he did bank in himself, look at how it's going to work out for him...much richer man. Career earnings wise, this couldn't have worked out better for him. An 8 year guaranteed deal injury or playing. Now he's got 14 years of earnings coming his way. As for Subban, he's probably one of the best examples of a player banking on himself and later not coming close to worth it. That's a 11-12 million dollar deal on todays money. After a shortened Norris trophy season.
  9. Yes. By the time he's done his 8 year deal with some injury luck, this kid could end up already over 1000 points. He's just entering the best years ... a run of 5-6 more 100 point plus seasons isn't ridiculous. Naslund was 27 when he started his peak, went on for 4-5 years, the Sedins were 29/30 when they had their boffo seasons, and 8 or so close to or over a PPG. He's special. Allvin will have a great off season if he can manage to sign EP for 8 years, and trade one of Garland, Beau or Brock, and add one more top four D, or solid 3C.
  10. Reality is EP bet on himself and won. With his bridge. Subban did this, as have many others. Doubt it's less than 10...if it is he's absolutely thinking about a cup and the team as well. MT is like 11 in this market ... that's likely where EP will come in.
  11. I hope he scores 59 goals and makes fools of us all.
  12. I think you need to re-read what he had to say about his Dad. He wasn't "just satisfied to be playing in the NHL" he resented the fact he couldn't spend time with him while he was dying. If you were 25, and had already made enough money for the rest of your life and if smart with the money, enough for your kids too, wouldn't you be at least a little bummed about not spending every day you could with your Dad until he passed?!! Unless my Dad said go and play hockey, i'd have taken a break, even if it meant my NHL career was over. Pretty sure we all can do the math, he was just ok during his second deal. Most people work 30-40 years to make 2-3 million bucks, educated or industrious ones 4-6.
  13. Also have to say, it always bugged me how a certain part of this forum invested themselves so heavily in Tyler Toffoli, the former enemy, and has such a love affair even though he didn't help our team much at all after we traded for him in the standings, and absolutely turned into a kitten in the bubble when he came back from injury, at least Brock would take a hit to make a play. Yet Brock accomplished so much more at the same age. It's time to do not just talk about doing, time to do it, Still have some faith he's got it in him. And maybe those guys who had a love affair over Tyler Toffoli were right.
  14. Because he gets paid what he does, and how that impacts the team there is so much angst against Brock on this forum at times. Truly hope he stays and has that break out season. Also have some doubts, and why wouldn't anyone at this point. Vedder took the low road, i'm still rooting for him.
  15. CAL versus Van was probably my favourite period of hockey 1989-1995/6ish. Joe New, Roberts and Theo eventually bailed, Iginla took time to click but eventually did and the 2000's CAL brought back some of that rivalry. It's too bad both teams are not fighting hammer and tong for supremacy right now in our division. Now CAL is faced with trying to make it work with an aging core, and we are faced with trying to make it work with an emerging one. It's got some storyline's just waiting to happen if they both bounce back given the ex Canucks currently on the Flames. One can only hope they both get their sh!t together next season and get a few years in before it's too late to ignite it again.
  16. TB, CAR, WNP for me. TB because well no state taxes helps a lot and want to keep seeing those teams win cups or make it to the finals if we aren't in it, or low state taxes (COL,Boston)... Perhaps GMs will have had enough and cry foul eventually. Plus it would be nice to see another dynasty, and they are the closest thing to it (Hedman out won't be easy). CAR because they suffered a lot, 9 years in a row without a playoff appearance, WNP because that city team needs to stay, still worried one day they end up relocated.
  17. Miller has done his job and some since becoming a Canuck. But agree they should wait. EP isn't a great candidate, said that earlier before his All-Star break interview. He's like Lafleur or Forsberg (although id argue Sakic was the better player) or more recently Kopitar (Brown had the C) or Orr or Phil Esposito. Not a fan of just naming the most talented or best player the captain unless they have leadership ability. Horvat was about as a vanilla C as we've ever had. Aside from Naslund, although at least he was a great player for us. Rather they let things happen organically, or even better if they need to start the season with a captain, have every roster player put a name in a hat. In the past when teams have done that it's not the obvious choices. Landeskog, during the combine, COL scout came out and said paraphrasing "the team will go to war for this guy, heck I'd like to go for war with this guy". Leadership comes in all types. Sakic was a Stoic type leader. Some are vocal, some are not. In this day and age where an emphasis is placed on media circus stuff, i actually detest that the team captain needs to be polished to fit that narrative. Miller in any other generation/era, would make a fine Captain, and would absolutely back a decision to make him the face of the franchise, but doubt it will happen, too chickensh!t with this fanbase.
  18. You bet. Bouchard was actually a great goalie - had two careers, first one he was a total spaz, second one after he discovered the Lord and settled down (his own words). Also inspired some of the guys that inspired generations of goalies, Patrick Roy (Bouchard was his favourite) and Grant Furh. Luongo's extra splash making a save, his own words - growing up idolizing Grant Furh and his awesome glove. Roy of course, popularized the butterfly and literally changed how the game was played. Who did Roy get that from? Tape on Glen Hall - the first guy who used that technique, and considered one of the best the games ever had, but never gets recognized for using it, Roy does. Demko is garden variety compared to a lot of these guys. Glad you mentioned Cheveldae and earlier Essensa. Back up Bob was considered a very good goalie in his early WNP days ... I'd be stoked if he ends up with a career as good as Anderson's. Over 300 wins is still a great achievement, even with the OT wins and shoot-out wins added. So far we've had one HHOF goalie who's played for us ... Felix Potvin, Sean Burke were also considered pretty darn good at times too and that goalie circus we had between McLean and Luongo was sure something ... Even Snow and Skudra had their moments. Also have a good feeling Demko will work out. Only thing that concerns me, is his durability. Taller goalies tend to get injured more often. Bishop also has a couple great seasons. Rinne set the bar for guys 6'4 and taller. Also had his share of time off. Markstrom too.
  19. Canucks sure didn't. But well 24 points. Pro-rated over a full season 109ish points ... that said easy schedule. Personally feel that with the defense we iced it kind of evens out. Let's hope the players take Tochett/Foote/Gonchar seriously and work the heck out of their craft in the off-season. Some of the elephant is gone. Hronek for a full season and if OEL can bounce back plus we re-sign Schenn, all of a sudden maybe our D isn't so bad. Our PK improved, plus we were dangerous short handed. Reasons for optimism (again).
  20. Demko isn't easily top ten, just has a lot of promise. Jury is still out on that. Watched so many goalies come in and actually do a lot more over the same time period and fade to give him that handle yet. Biestra was correct on another thread to point that out no matter how much that may hurt or rub folks the wrong way. Ranford was unreal in 1990, but didn't stay on top for long, Murray recently and Binnington. Sure both PIT and St. Louis fans thought they got a good one. Craig Anderson is actually about the best I think we can hope for. Brian Elliot. Boucher - five consecutive shutouts wasn't good enough to make the PHI goaltending circus since Hextall was around. Gibson in ANA was wasted. Now he's pretty much done. Jones in SJ. Heck back in the WCE era, Cloutier had 7 shutouts one year ... still his ballon got popped every playoffs. Demko is a great guy and hope the best for him. But one good season doesn't mean much in this league. Goalies are the most fickle players in the league. He's got time on his side ... but injuries are worrisome. At this point, he's our number one goalie, needs a couple solid seasons under his belt before labelling anything. Agree Yzerman knows he's got to draft some impact players. Larkin and Seider are not enough. We do have a legit top five center and top 5-8th defenseman. And some good support players too, Miller is legit right now too.
  21. Actually Detroit and Vancouver started around the exact same time. Hollands attempt at post Datsyuk/Zetterberg Lidstrom kind of flopped, was flat. Bertuzzi, Mantha, Larkin ... Yzerman properly assessed and well they are still rebuilding, plus parted ways on most of Hollands stuff.
