  1. Well we will eventually. We will have to suck a lot to do it as well. Hopefully not for a long time ...
  2. Best draft years ever. At the top and probably never going to be beat 1979....second place 1988 - yes Lindens draft year ... third 2003...sick. Some honourable mentions in the early 80’s....we are going to have to wait a long time before we can compare what JB has done over a 6-8 year period (more to come) before we know exactly how well he did. The Oilers, and NYI and MTL dynasties were all built from the draft and some good luck - Gretzky starting in the WHA and getting traded - Dryden (definitely a top all-time goalie) starting in Boston and getting traded for three guys that never played a game in the NHL....for sure the Oilers are absolutely the cream of the crop. That said Detroit managed to keep their dominance going another ten years because of late round steals... Really we won’t know for at least five more years how well he did ... so far he’s better then average compared to his peers but not otherworldly either. TB and Boston have managed a lot with a lot less over the same time period drafting a lot lower... and OTT has drafted well for 15 years not that it’s mattered much...Stone and Zibanejad say hello.
  3. Yep and yep. One more year no more Spooner, Roussel, Sutter, Pearson etc..two more years no more LE, Luongo etc. Sure we won’t be able to ice the same team this year but that was obvious last season (a year ago)...Covid had made that harder as no cap increase - however as far as UFAs go some are going to be very disappointed in their suitors and their offers too. Really I know we are one of “ten” teams that are going to have some problems... but also doubt it will mean much other then losing some depth and adding some rookies. Looking at CHI had to do four times now and what TO had to do last off-season I don’t think we have it close to as bad as some seem to think and are proposing. 3.5-5 million shouldn’t be too hard to find ... TT was a trade of circumstance (if BB didn’t get injured no way we’d have done that)...with the new circumstances I doubt he’s even in the picture.
  4. Agree that things will fall into place after the season is over. Nobody knows what’s going to happen with gate income and unless we go very far in the playoffs merchandising won’t be a revenue driver. JV is a cheap option even with his arbitration rights. He was the best value forward after EP for us this season by a long shot and won’t get much of a raise. Don’t see us keeping Leivo who’s also probably looking for a raise despite his injury - at least not over JV. TT is a complete luxury and don’t see much of a chance we sign him - and if we do say goodbye to two lower tier guys - Pearson and JV likely unless Ferland ends up on the LTIR to start the season. We will need 3.5-5 million to sign Markstrom, JV, AG and Tanev...a lot more for TT. To me Stetcher is the guy that’s like Hutton this year. With Rathbone signed .... think the writings on the wall ...
  5. Please no. Just prolong the pain. Really wish we just take our medicine for two more years. This could be our best chance to do some damage in the playoffs ... if we do I hope management isn’t fooled (again) into thinking we are close because we are not. This teams peak years won’t be wasted waiting two more years at all. That’s when we should be just entering prime time.
  6. He’s still a cap dump even without Covid. His injury history Mr Glass definitely puts him in the bracket of cap dump. It would be something like Sutter and Hoglander or Lind and a 3rd for a 5th back. No thanks. We are better of just letting him finish his career here. Doubtful he will ever play another game after this year other then maybe a late signing for 1-2 million to a contender...
  7. If he’s not in the lineup or playing a 4th line role he might decide to pack it in. I don’t expect him to retire next season but do believe there are decent odds he will after the next season . There are very good adds he will end up with the Ladd/Redden treatment early next year. With Covid he might not even want to risk showing up in Utica. But yeah you could be right. As far as the post-season goes they won’t re-coup any losses if fans aren’t allowed to buy tickets. TV revenue and other revenue streams currently are less then 50% ....there are too many scenarios to know how things will shake out. One things almost a for sure - at least one more roster player is going the way of Bear next season ... who do you think that will be? Edit: If TT is re-signed, JV too...he’s as good as gone. McEwen will slot in.
  8. I don’t see us doing that either. Unless by some miracle he has a stellar bounce back season - I think there are good odds that he will retire at the end of the next season too. Just mentioned the only bright side with the cap remaining flat is that this crop of UFAs won’t find it easy cashing in either. Half the teams have cap issues ... sure a few teams will swing some cap dumps - maybe we will be one of them (I hate that idea for the most part rather we didn’t go there). The only players we have that aren’t part of the core that we could make a trade for and get something back are Pearson and JV. JV doesn’t make sense given his age and his production per minute is very good. And that his raise won’t be a big one. But if we did manage to sign TT it’s possible for sure - in that case we keep Leivo. I would hate to trade Sutter with Lind just for one year of savings... rather promote him to shore up the loss of Pearson. Trading Pearson and not re-signing Leivo and Stecher and going with cheaper options (Lind and Rafferty) would allow us to sign all the rest ... yes our team won’t be as good but it was never going to be even without Covid .... and the cap not might equal the reduced salaries all these guys would have got anyways. Predict Tanev 1 year at 4.5-5, TT 4.5-5x 4 and JV a one year bridge at just over 2...Markstrom 5 x 5 or 5.5x4 Edit: Love Pearson but there is little chance we can afford him and TT long term anyways. TT is a modest upgrade so definitely am happy if we can keep him . Boeser is happy to be back with Horvat too - he had his best season playing with him as they both have similar styles ... JB has some big decisions to make ... JV, Pearson, Stetcher and Roussel are the most likely casualties of this cap crunch - none of those guys can’t be replaced eventually internally- next season might be all about the rookie impact and hopefully like the past three years they just keep on doing it. Edit: two other things. One Ferland. If he’s back on the LTIR or not will make an impact - same if he’s not ... Ferland, Bear and Lind should be able to keep our Left side going without Pearson by committee- same with Roussel. Second thing is a team can be over the cap - it would require that we ice a shortened bench and put some players in the AHL...there are so many scenarios to help squeek us in.
  9. I know LE is a sore spot for a lot of fans. If he just played like most expected him to since he’d at worst be a good middle six forward still for us - in the same realm as Pearson and TT... unfortunately that’s not the case. We do need him off the cap, if all it cost us was a first for two years I could I’m still not sure I could stomach that. Don’t know how JB is going to juggle this off season but I’d expect there is a good chance we won’t re-sign TT, Leivo and or if we do then JV will be traded with one of Roussel or Pearson - at the very least. We won’t be able to ice the same team .... given most cap teams planned for a standard annual cap increase a lot of them - including us - will be scrambling. On a positive note UFAs won’t be getting the same deals either. Smaller money and less term. It’s very possible it could cost 2m less then expected to sign TT and Markstrom- say 4.5x 3 and 5 x 5. Tanev won’t command much of a raise either if any. One of the three trades NJ media made after the fake news JB was shopping BB included BB and LE...for a first and a good prospect...I hated all three of their proposed trades and loved JB remarks but until next season starts and all the work left to deal with these contracts is done I do understand a lot of ideas will be floating around. I do think that after this next season LE will take the high road and retire. Would be extremely unfortunate for our team if we paid a huge premium for one season. Pearson makes the most sense to me IF we re-sign TT. If we don’t the pain might not be so bad .... GMs will be very reluctant to overspend for aging vets and past production this offseason. Some UFAs might need to take pay-cuts just to get a deal.
  10. He would be if the ED wasn’t looming. Not many teams would protect him at this point - definitely could change if he improves but doubt we’d find a taker until at least half way through next season, and only if his numbers are at least around the league average.
  11. This won’t happen before the season starts unless Markstrom is injured right away and Demko wins us a cup. Demko needs to improve his play significantly for any team - including Detroit and OTT who are the most likely targets - to consider trading for him and using up their one goalie spot...not impossible but very unlikely.
  12. Melnyk said he doesn’t want to spend to the cap again until 2020-2021, there is a bit of a difference but I do agree that is a dead horse that won’t get up (LE to OTT plus whatever). And that most teams won’t have the cap space for two years of LE (and have to wonder why the few that might would want LE instead of a better one year deal like Marleau was). Like it or not I don’t really see ourselves getting out of this one without trading a key player. NJ could afford LE ....
  13. JB on NHL.com “ I have no intention of trading Boeser, I haven’t had one conversation about that and don’t know where this stuff comes from.” .... So is this supposition as the team claims or is JB lying?
  14. This has been going on since Zucker...where there’s smoke there is fire in suppose - unless it’s just smoke and mirrors - and sometimes media guys do get caught with their pants down. Not everyone has the reputation McKenzie and Friedman have built ...
  15. Maybe that’s why there are 50 proposals or so floating around here for BB the past 12 months. I’m sure the average fan who’s committed enough to look at cap hits and knows some of our team weaknesses realizes BB is low hanging fruit as far as best returns are. Doesn’t mean a media type should be banging that obvious drum either. Once they’ve started sometimes it becomes about ego (JT Burke and his commitment to saying the JT Miller trade was a terrible one for example). Sure we need 4-5 million to re-sign Tanev (one year deal is expected), Markstrom and JV ... why not Pearson instead of BB? His stock is as high as it ever will be as a rental (one year) reasonable cap hit - we have Bear wasting away in the AHL and all comments coming from Ferlands camp is he’s definitely up for another go (soon says JB)...let Leivo go and it’s easy peasey wrap it up in a bow. Sure Stecher needs to be figured out but we have Rafferty waiting to take his spot - and possibly Tree. If this is about TT then yes something else has to give (and that something has to be LE). Brock Boeser doesn’t deserve to be surrounded with made up crap about why or why he shouldn’t be traded after what he’s been through (if you don’t know check out what he had to go through to re-Hab himself)...All he’s done since he arrived is excel and vastly outperform expectations (which is why his cap hit is what it is). When he went down he was 5th in RW scoring in the entire league - people seem to forget that - higher then TT and a lot of other big name wingers too. Wonder if the season finished and TT stats continued drop to go towards the career norm if folks would be so desperate to sign him (can’t expect a 40% higher shooting percentage forever). He’s a career middle six forward- not much different then so many others stats wise - but sure let’s trade BB so we can “upgrade” our right side and slot in whatever fantasy folks have (Dumba, Parayoko, ya da ya da da).... I’d much rather keep JV and his next cap hit then trying to find the extra money when it’s so obviously not there for TT too. TT isn’t > then BB. Ten games isn’t a career. We could find many ten game BB sample sizes that were better then TT first ten games too. I like him but wouldn’t trade him straight across for BB any day. Would you? Stupid. I’d trade Pearson and Sutter to fit them all in no problem though ... TT is a modest upgrade for Pearson. And he and EP seem to have chemistry which counts for something but that’s about it... BB has leadership abilities and is absolutely part of this team. And we have a strong US contingent ... why mess with it?
  16. He must be related to Patrick Sullivan (damn my memory needs some oxygen I sure hope I got the right guy) who hated Burrows so much after nobody wanted him (and before) went on a huge rant about how Burrows wasn’t a NHL quality player - couldn’t do anything right - was total trash as a human being and was the most overrated player in the history of the NHL. Love that Burrows proceeded to make him look like a total idiot - I’m sure Sekeras, JD Burke and anyone else that can’t just stop spewing trash about the Canucks and making up crap from thin air will look just as ridiculous one day. Have to say Larkin from THN is one of the most refreshing - relatively young - writers/media guys in the industry. Routinely makes good articles about the NHL in general - and despite not having rose coloured glasses writer good things about the Canucks often. Some NHL.com staff seem to have noticed us too in their regular power rankings. For that I’m thankful. Larkin predicted (against the grain) that we’d be the next Canadian team to win a cup before the start of this season. One heck of a writer and not just because he ignores or has a preference or a prejudice with us - he’s old school despite not really being old enough. Campbell is for sure their veteran opinion piece writer and I like his stuff too- but Larkin is IMO his heir apparent and he’s not nearly as liberal despite his age. Not everyone is against us (and BTW that slogan is too ironic for words - im a victim but I don’t care ... ha ha sure you do.
  17. Great information above all gathered together- thx mill. This pandemic has sucked for so many people in a lot of ways - but there is some bright sides to it and the CBA getting extended is one of them. Changing habits is another (hygiene) as is re-focus on what’s really important (family for example). People growing their own food, gardening etc is on the rise too. Lessons to be learned for those that could afford to save but didn’t have a few months rent or mortgage payments in a rainy day account - instead boats, 3 holidays a year, luxury items including eating out too much and even clothing. It’s shocking to hear about a family income of 200k yet they’ve managed to max out credit cards and not come out ok as a result of no restraint (eating out 5/7 time’s a week, atv’s kids doing 4 different sports etc)...true story and there are too many of those out there. Hopefully this will roll things back to the generation that survived the Great Depression and how amazing they were at self sufficiency and saving for the future as a whole - something the baby boomers did a poor job of...gen x is the only one coming out of this relatively unscathed...a lot had to work for everything they got, and did for a large part have some adversity... and they are hard workers in their prime earning years. Soap box a bit but the point is despite the hardships and changes 2020 has been all about - it’s opened up a ton of dialogues on how things can be done better and I for one believe despite the tragedy it’s going to help a lot of people fix some things in their lives that weren’t well thought out and change habits for the better. Everyone is responsible for themselves ultimately. We can do better for sure and the NHL and NHLPA working together is a small gift and example of that. Again thx for sharing
  18. Dumb Nuck what happens if he gets us past two rounds? Is he still a terrible coach or is it just because the team is so way much better then it was a year or two ago and with a better coach we should be winning cups already?
  19. Brian Burke like most sports guys doesn’t always get it right - but I certainly don’t mind hearing his stuff. I enjoyed his explanations of what he was looking for and what the criteria used to be like when he was a GM (skating was not high on the list as it was one area that could be improved on easily). Different time’s. As far as Hughes goes his reaction was hilarious. Thought he was having a stroke trying to reel himself in. I did like his take on Myers though during UFA day. As a GM one thing I loved about him was how much he had the players backs in the media ... “Sedin doesn’t mean punch me in the back of the head ...” those sort of things. If anything anyone who was a fan of those teams should consider their replies carefully - he had his fingerprints all over it. His stock after us an ANA was never higher - he simply couldn’t do the same thing in TO - his five year plan was a bomb. And at least he’s got personality. His Burke vs Lowe kept the media humming for a couple seasons until they. buried the hatchet (at one time they actually were planning a fight in a barn...funny stuff).
  20. I’m not reading that on this tweet. Do you have other information that says Ferland is “unfit “ to do play? Maybe tomorrow Roussel is out or Pearson - just curious ...Edit: Ok I saw the quote by TSN - JB expects him back soon.. Hmm. Getting unfit or unable to practice might be code for Covid 19...Pastrnak for Boston has the same nomenclature as do several others
  21. Mickey might have been the first coach to tell his guy to lay off women on screen - heck maybe it even inspired a few coaches too. Can’t remember who it was but the coach (Al Arbour?Glen Sather? ) asked all the wives to meet up with them and then told them no sex until the playoffs were over....and it worked too. They won the cup ... my brain isn’t as good at every fact yet but if anyone else can find who this was (might have been Shero now that i think about it really hard - about 80% sure it was Shero)... that would make this even more hilarious.
  22. Yes. And it should. Five rounds of hockey if a play-in team gets that far ... forever the seasons used to be 72 (or less) games and then either a bye in the first round or a five game series (should those get an asterisk too)...and the players have to go directly back to their bubble afterwards (when has that happened before?) not home to their wife and kids during home games or not out to let some steam go on an away games either. The players themselves are already saying this will be the HARDEST cup to win all-time - and I for one agree to that. So yes put an asterisk on it as the best cup any team has ever won - and I definitely hope it’s handed out.
  23. However one time Lidstrom won the Norris (and he most definitely should not have - complete robbery)...but yeah I agree no way he wins a Selke until he gets a better linemate (Pearson is one) and we have at least one defensive defenseman that can play 22-23 minutes a game and shut the door. Edit: A “gimme” - worst Norris ever won in 2011 .. at minus two in case anyone isn’t aware of this already. Much better candidates even on our squad. Shouldn’t have even been a finalist - at least Borque won all of his based on great play each season. And funny thing is Lidstrom couldn’t win a Norris until the generation before him was all but done ... yes he was a great defenseman - we all know that but his greatness was exaggerated and it definitely factored into the voting on his last one - and even a little on the other ones too.
  24. Absolutely. -15 as Canuck fans facing up against top lines every home game Canuck fans can appreciate... but it doesn’t do him any favours when it comes to Selke votes..
