  1. If we win the 1st overall then just pick Lafrenierre. All the cap space will go away in time / we don’t need to stress about two more years before it can be maximized. When MG had his guys all signed what did he do with all his extra dough he managed with his NTC/NMC’s? He wasted it on Ballard and Booth...which also cost us a first rounder and a serviceable middle six guy in Grabner. Both guys ended up getting bought out. If and when we get cap space doesn’t mean it will work out or go the way we hope. Same with 31 other teams in the league. Bad contracts occur all the time. It’s pure fantasy anyways ... all I’m hoping for at this point is the play-ins occur ... and that we win some playoff games.
  2. Risto would be a fine target if our defense was - well better defensively. We need a defensive defenseman or a two-way defensemnan that’s got strong defense more then a few more points but a lot more goals against. A Snepsts/Butcher/Murzyn/Mitchell type. Hold on ... we already have that in Tanev. What we should be doing is trying to upgrade Stecher into another Mitchell/Tanev type if we can. Love his motor but would really rather offer Tree a contract to see what he can manage as that’s right in his wheelhouse. It would also allow Myers to do his thing. Trying to outscore the opposition is fun to watch but Markstrom shouldn’t have to pick up all the slack either. Manson in ANA would be a better add.
  3. As for the OP. The ask for these two would be EP and QHs. They’d want a LHD to replace Jones and a good center to replace PLD. Would anyone do that? Doubtful. I’d counter with Horvat and BB ... they have Werenksi who could easily take over the number one spot as he’s done while Jones is out anyways ... PLD is > then Horvat was at the same age... think we’d win that deal short and long term. If we want to go after one of the better young centres and Norris caliber guys we’d have to play ball. At this point I’d say Jones plus PLD = EP plus QHs. That would be a fair hockey trade. We’d win a Horvat/BB for PLD Jones trade every time. Jones replaces Edler. PLD more then replaces Horvat long term but we’d lose on the short term. Doubt they’d do it but I sure would. The middle ground might be Horvat as QHs for Jones an PLD. That’s actually a pretty fair trade.
  4. That is never going to happen. The only player that would get is PLD is either Hughes or EP.
  5. Risto is awful in his own end. Rather just keep signing Tanev ... Markstrom doesn’t need more shots on net. I get the age think and Risto should get better - but not sure the added cost would be worth it. Think Vancouver has to depend on an internal improvement as Tanev ages - maybe Tree, or Rafferty or Woo or whomever. Timing isn’t quite right yet for a guy like Risto - especially when you consider what we’d have to pay to get him. Tanev is just cap space.
  6. Yep. I was sick to my stomach when he was picked before our turn - given what Benning has been saying about the draft I was certain he was our first choice if available... then MT a higher ranked guy fell on our lap and we went for 9-16th ranked OJ, over Sergechev and Chychrun who at one point (the year before) was ranked 1-2 overall I was stunned. PLD doesn’t have the same upside as far as offensive production goes - but as far as hockey goes is a much more complete player then EP is right now by a fair margin. Not saying he’s better / but he’s got star written all over him and as he ages could be a Swiss Army knife type for sure. Selke/PK/Type producer. He’s only a year older and has worked his way up their lineup for a hardass coach (doesn’t miss games and scored 20 goals and 48 points as a middle six center his rookie year ... pretty darn good). . It’s a ridiculous trade (for Seth Jones too). Not sure what a fair trade would look like - but it wouldn’t be as big as some fans think for EP for PLD...
  7. As of right now Jones has more value the EP by himself. It’s also possible with his intangibles and ability to work with both stars and just ok players that PLD = EP right now too. EP has a bigger upside that’s for sure but PLD is a great young center to work with as well. We’d take this deal in a heartbeat (both Jones and PLD). On a one for one deal Columbus wouldn’t have to add much to get EP for PLD...one year older ... and has upside himself too. I wouldn’t do that deal but I also would be happy to listen to it depending on what the add was. Would do Werenksi and PLD for EP and Stetcher too.
  8. I’m sure just like the maturity level shown by this years grads (one of my kids did) the NHL players will be absolutely stoked to lift the cup and skate around ... also I’d be surprised if their wasn’t some fans or people in the lower bowl for the final games ...already talk of letting 1000 people into those games which socially distancing wouldn’t look much different then the average Florida game from an ice level viewpoint. The only strange thing about that would be maybe half the fans won’t be cheering as they are fans of the other team. If Vancouver won it should have an asterisk- because it will be the hardest cup in the history of the game to win for those teams doing the play-ins. That’s coming from the players themselves....whomever is voting against this will also be cheering their arses off...
  9. There’s no reason we can’t sign Tanev without a little work. Roussel or Pearson or both could be traded without adding much of a sweetener and in Pearson’s case we’d get something nice back. We are chocked full of middle six players , some of which are playing in Utica already. Send LE the way of Ladd and his replacement could save a little ... or just be added to JVs salary. TT might not even want to play here, the only reason we did this in the first place was because BB and Ferland were out and we could afford the overage. There is another option too and go the way TO has had to from time to time recently which is ice a shorter bench (that’s the penalty if your over the cap). Go with a shorter roster by a player or two. Just pile up Utica a bit more and trade guys that are not part of the core in descending order of who will provide something back and until a cap dump is required and try and stop there (if possible). JB doesn’t foresee any cap issues - maybe it’s just PR but really looking around the league at contenders and other cap teams our relative position is actually pretty good. So yes we can afford a one year contract with Tanev (two reports now out of NHL.com that’s exactly what’s in the works). As far as this proposal goes it’s one of the best ones I’ve seen, but it’s not needed. Tanev probably still has 3-4 decent years left in him, is well liked in the locker room, loved by Hughes as a partner - and he’s well positioned to continue his career as a Canuck as a second or third pairing guy for as long as his body can take it. Adding Myers was a godsend - yes he’s taken a lot of Edlers old flak - but he’s also given both Edler and Tanev a much needed break (same with Hughes). 5 x 5 a Hughe/Tanev combo just makes a lot of sense - until a prospect or better opportunity comes along what a great way for our budding superstar to grow and learn the NHL game. So far aces. Don’t mess with aces.
  10. One-two years left for all the expensive stop gaps. Pearson, Leivo and Stecher would be the guys I don’t re-sign or trade to fit things in under the cap next season. Bear wants another NHL shot - Ferland too....why not give it to them. Tree wants to come back why not sign him instead of Stetcher (although I’d be fine with either). JV and AG are must haves given their age and abilities. TT is a complete luxury at this point but if we can swing it without losing our high end prospects then sure. Otherwise no thanks - already cost us Madden and a second - don’t make it worse by trading JV for a modest overall - or a possible downgrade in the future (JV would easily get 50 points on the first line and PP unit folks - that’s what the stats point out). Yes there are quite a few different scenarios- but anyone that involves trading our young guys for old vets is terrible management IMO - next season is going to be a challenge as we can’t afford the same depth. Pearson is the obvious choice he’s trade able, we get something in return for the future ... maybe Roussel but don’t know who would want him and if it would be considered a cap dump. Nobody is touching Sutter - that’s a cap dump for sure ... Beagle maybe. Those are the guys we need to work with though. Play Ferland and or Bear. Suck it up and hope the core keeps getting better and we should make the playoffs next season. Once we get through next year everything will fall into place organically. Edit: Obviously thing are not ideal. That’s what happens when you have to patch a decent roster together while waiting for the new core to emerge. With the early arrival of both EP and Hughes things ended up about one year advanced. Nobody predicted such a fall in production from LE, at the time he was about as consistent as they come for that level of player - however the bright side is if he kept it up and won and extra 4-6 games a year as a result we would have never ended up with the same guys. That quite possibly is LE’s biggest gift to the team. If we sign TT and JV he could still help us on the PK and fourth line. Expensive- yes. Or he could end up like Ladd last season...save 2-3k depending on his replacement...next season we will start feeling the pinch but it will resolve by itself as long as prospects keep joining the team which seems all but certain.
  11. Makes a lot more sense to trade Pearson - we’d actually get something in return (picks and or prospects) - it would be a enough to sign Markstrom/JV and play Ferland ... if he goes back on the LTIR then bring up Bear and if both are healthy then maybe Bear can be traded at the TDL too who knows. Don’t re-sign Leivo (although he’s another option - Trade JV and sign Leivo) maybe replace Stetcher with Tree....or promote Rafferty and see how that goes. That should be enough to pay for everyone. It would suck to lose Pearson but are we really going to be able to keep both him and TT or either long term? Not until Sutter, Roussel, Beagle, LE and Luongo are off the books permanently and cheaper options become realistically available...Podz might get a debut late next season... Lind is ready for a shot soon too, maybe when to start the season. Those guys are gold - hate to lose Madden too but 100% understand the trade. Podz, Lind, Hoglander, OJ, Brisbois, Rafferty, Diepietro and maybe Woo plus one or two others we don’t have yet or come out of the woodwork (Rathbone) are going to be the players that keep this team working once the core guys are all on longer term contracts. Next season is going to maybe cost us one of these guys as cap dump but not necessarily either. Lots of money for Hughes and EP even with LE still around .... but only if we have McEwen and the above guys available to fill the veteran stop gaps for us.
  12. Fortunately for us Tanev and management have along history and he knows if he signs a one year deal that another deal will almost certainly be there for him when more money opens up after it’s done. He helps the team by adding an protection spot in a way too (not that one would be used on him anyways but this way Tanev knows he gets to stay which is what he wants...otherwise Seattle might take him on a longer term unprotected deal)...This what supposedly is happening right now (both sides working on a one year deal). Moving Sutter might cost us something but thems the breaks - probably a swap in picks or maybe even one of our better prospects like Lind. That could be the cost if we don’t play ball and move a guy like say Pearson to clear cap.
  13. It is what it is. I’m sure they’d fight it if they felt they had any chance but then they’d be going after their own signature agreeing to the changes so we’d look a little petty going back on it too. It’s like 3.25% of the overall cap...and far from the worst things going on with our current contracts...if anything it’s forcing JB to save for the future when we will really need it during the early peak of this core...
  14. It wouldn’t go anywhere as the league ratified and adjusted the contracts including Vancouver. You can change a contract- as long as both parties agree to it and I didn’t see Luongo giving back the extra millions he earned early on. It’s a done deal - get over it folks.
  15. Not true. The victim culture within the fan base is getting old. We aren’t the only team - and this was a topic a long time ago - sure we have to pay the piper but back then look at the bright side it allowed GMMG to go after Ballard and Booth ha ha ... we wouldn’t have had the same depth if it wasn’t a BS contract from the start. Luongo regretted it too. But I’m sure he didn’t mind the 10’s of millions front loaded to him either. Really it’s not that big of a deal. LE is about the same (if his salary was around 3m only fools would be complaining). People it’s all going to come off the books eventually - and with current events...let’s just say it won’t be that punishing. Someone posted that it’s going to block Markstroms deal. Ha ha ha. Let Leivo go - trade one of our middle six guys - we have enough for almost two teams - Pearson is the obvious choice given his value. Play Ferland, he’s says he’s ready- and if and when he’s injured bring up Bear and re-unite the killer Bees or triple Bees or whether you call it. Big deal. JV and TT are another pickle. Don’t see us keeping both. So maybe Leivo stays and JV is traded if we sign TT too. We can’t expect to have a bazillion or middle six forwards for long anyways. Once EP and QH are up so is Roussel, Pearson (if he’s still here), Bear, Sutter etc. We don’t have anything close to serious cap issues. The year after that no more LE (if he isn’t gone by then) and practically 2/3 of our current lineup ... this team is going to look nothing like it does now in 2-3 years ... plus JB might just waste it anyways ... the same way MG wasted over 8 million - or 16% of our cap on Booth and Ballard right?
  16. I don’t know about that - listening to the broadcast and reading what I have Luongo would have kept going if his body could make it ... he doesn’t owe us or Florida anything - that he choose to stay in Miami and rejoined as a special advisor 6-8 months after retirement is mute. Doesn’t blemish anything he did while here - if we want to blame someone then MG and Bettman would be where to direct that. The only thing I didn’t like about this was the whining I heard about how “untradable” his contract was...not really either- TO had a good offer, and heck we got Markstrom from the deal...no complaints there.
  17. Demko isn’t ready - that said I suppose we could look to add a cheap experienced former starter to tutor Demko and just wait and see what he’s capable of with more games. Don t see that happening though - and his stock is too low to get much back right now given then that team would have to commit or also face losing him too. Maybe Detroit or OTT but that’s about it nobody else would go for it. Goalies don’t usually get much value in a trade ... especially back-ups. Too easy to find those guys. The team is going to sign Markstrom .... expect a 3-5 year deal in the 6-5 million range depending on term. Sucks if we lose Demko but we are going to lose someone...a lot different this time around worrying about losing so and so who’s careers all virtually disappeared in a year or two anyways. This time it’s going to sting no matter what.
  18. Given almost all other teams have got away with it - and that the length of contracts were dealt with permanently after the fact, it is a little surprising the league upheld it. Unless Weber is injured (in which case it’s a non-issue) I’m sure he has at least four more years left in him .... which would leave a couple left. He’s a stand up guy - doubt he would be “injured” just to for the heck of the cap ... wouldn’t be surprised if he plays the entire thing out either. Edit: Good listen though - thanks for posting
  19. Hey on that we are pretty much the same. I agree a lot of people I know don’t even know I’m on this site daily pretty much... and I’ve never done twitter or even looked at it past the screen shots I see on here and maybe NHL.com. My kids do Instagram and think Facebook is for middle age housewife’s ha ha. I like the convenience of cellphones but am not convinced they are even necessary at all. Did fine without one running a construction business through an office ... in fact it made me lazier and less organized once I did get one as things were that much easier (but not necessarily better)... Baggins nice chatting - I am going to add that there is definitely a lot of grey between which is considered better ... maybe an older fan would vote for the Orca but just barely and vice versa. I love all the teams and almost all players ... what they wear are definitely secondary to that.
  20. That’s true. It’s going to take a few decades and or a few cups for folks to unite around it just to get to the majority . That said the majority of fans want it back full-time, and a larger portion want it as the third jersey as those that want to keep it the way it is. From a business perspective management has a lot of work to do to brand the Orca into a permanent logo in the fans pysche. Corporations can do this but from a small business perspective it’s a deathwish if you don’t listen to your customers like the Canucks have definitely done. Buffalo got rid of the buffoloslug (why would they ever mess with such a great logo?) Edmonton dropped their strange gear thing - NYI same with fisherboy - same with another dozen or so teams that went all-blacks in the late 90’s early 2000’s. The Canucks continued to go against the grain but at least went back to their roots colour wise, if they didn’t I’m sure the Orca would have been short lived. The Sedins made new fans ... and EP and crew will too. Their plan is ageist one that they are waiting for us older fans to die out ... and or win a cup. That’s what it will take to unite us ... get that changing all the time is a poor long term strategy. They should have just let well enough alone and this wouldn’t even be a topic.
  21. Maybe blame Salo. Hard to plan a team around a very good player who couldn’t keep out of the infirmary. But yeah it’s definitely on MG.
  22. Ok that’s crossing a line. I’m trying to be nice here and educate you a little in the fact that there is a significant (majority) of the fan base that prefers the old uniforms. Don’t make fun of a fan who’s spent the time to try and make the blend things that would maybe fit that majority - like to see what you could come up with ... Edit: saying those who don’t like the Orca - or like myself prefer the older uniformed has nothing to do about cheering for the team. You say you’ve been cheering from them since 94... well good for you. You happen to be in the minority that found the next version as an improvement- including the actual guys that played on the team. Did Bieksa not pour his heart and soul into the team? Yet he wished he and his mates could had the chance (and they asked too) to play in the skate uni’s. I get it your pissed that you posted false data and are protective of the Orca. Don’t let the eat the egg as it slips down your face. Most fans ( the majority) prefer the older uniforms and probably will for the next 10-20 years unless we win a cup, maybe even then still prefer it. Because it’s better.
  23. That’s a great looking logo. Well done.!! Maybe we should get a room ha ha. I’m not as opposed of the current logo as you are - but used to be ... that logo should be on our jersey but likely never will despite popular opinion still not in favour of it (orca). My uncle did native art - he was actually quite the artist...should have asked him to make it - think we might have been better off going the SJ route...Orcas kill and eat great whites livers after all - tried a little too and failed IMO - no C required- that said I’d probably still have hated it. SJ wins the best as far as experts go for top fifty. The hardest part for the judges is deciding which one to go with as number one. Too bad we didn’t have the same problem - but at least the skate makes the cut. Worst uniforms ever? The first Orca uni’s are often in the discussion ... thanks to NYI we don’t finish last though ... the Buffoloslug and terrible EDM logo change also get honourable mentions - same with our infamous Vs...like I said earlier the worst Vancouver uniforms start with the Vs and end with the Orca unfortunately...
  24. Thanks for the support. Sure maybe there are only three or four of us brave enough to go against the age group we are mostly talking going against - but yeah in any real poll the Orca still isn’t the popular vote. It’s like having Trump for President but in this case Trump only had 14.7% of the votes . Edit: Would also bet that the further you get away from Vancouver that the higher the voting would go towards the black skate jersey. All of BC fell in love with the Linden teams - it was infectious starting in 89 vs Calgary and gained steam as it went. First time in a decade we were relevant. And the logo might have changed but the colours didn’t. It works. Why does Boston have their colours? Or PHI? Makes zero sense - or the Pens...there is no reason at all to have to go and make your colours represent the area - otherwise 3/4 of the entire league would be blue-green and white - just saying. Including Boston, and PHI...PIT too - Pennsylvania is entirely covered in forest with lakes and rivers all over too... 14.7-16% seem to be the bracket who would prefer to stay with the Orca. Thought it might be higher but not surprised given that we’ll just look at the two side by side - which one screams the Canucks the loudest. I hope Linden does an autobiography sometime. I really truly do.
  25. It wouldn’t be impartial - that said don’t worry Dumb Nuck, as far as rankings go the Orca gained a little traction going to the final but still ranks near the bottom when impartial parties do those sort of things - a few times near or at dead last since it’s inception. Suppose it fuels the everyone hates us but we don’t care (but care enough to even say that which is ironic) crowd. Curiously the Blackhawks logo is near the top (SJ is the usual winner) - but suppose at some point after the Red Skins and Eskimos are forced to change their name due to popular opinion that they could be up next.
