  1. Islanders trading Chara...Hodge for Middleton (if you want to go way back)..back to NYI Luongo and whomever that guy was that scored like 91 points one year (Mad Mike - think it was Olli Jokinen) .. Roy deal. Selanne to ANA deal. Hull out of Calgary (although it might have helped them get a cup) and Gilmour out of Calgary... lucky for us or 94 might have never happened. There is quite a few really and this deal almost certainly won’t end up in any top ten list. Not when Naslund for Stojanov ... Neely...Dryden etc and other deals were so absolutely lopsided. And buyers is a little strange way to phrase it - a trade is a trade and OTT got a solid player in return....
  2. Yep. The league minimum is 700k...which is fine - just that it is still more money then most fans can hope to make without many years of hard work - and with the year everyone has had so far the entertainment value from this tournament would be a welcome distraction. I really think most players want to play to ... and realize with the times they should step up. The NHL protocols are extensive and they worked hard to make it as safe as possible. Kind of puts things into perspective when the average joe in essential services went out every day....and the ones that couldn’t have lost a lot financially. I appreciate those players that were in on day one putting their time in to get this all rolling.
  3. Anyone who’s been that age shouldn’t be too surprised... invincibility and all - and I know from my kids that they know it likely won’t kill them so aren’t that concerned about getting it as much as they are about giving it to their parents and grandparents (and being that age might not be too worried about that either). As soon as they were allowed out plans were made .... can’t really blame them either / as a middle aged person time goes a lot quicker and can imagine how a couple months for kids and teenagers and folks in their early 20’s handled the isolation. BC hasn’t really had many cases comparatively either. A drop in the bucket or just a couple weeks compared to other places...wonder how much geography has to do with that.
  4. So for 99% of BCs population it should work ... well didn’t really do the arithmetic but for most folks I’m sure they’d like it.
  5. Players have had some pretty big asks of themselves and their families in the past ... I think given they’ve been paid for services not rendered and that they seem to want to play as well will get them onboard. A lot of military families have much harder asks of them, heck even thousands of regular folks in Canada who travel in 5-8 week blocks to work up north etc. Players having kids is definitely a challenge for sure. Can’t expect them to want to miss that one bit. They plan kids for the summer on purpose...the ones that don’t would for sure trade a chance at a cup and being back on the ice ... they’ve already agreed to the format right?
  6. If the families are in a “bubble” and getting tested daily - I can’t see why they shouldn’t be allowed to visit other friends and family or as was said “enjoy BC” after 14 days of isolation - once their team is out of course... Everything I’ve read about the safety protocols planned are extensive. The NHL can’t afford any chance of a player getting Covid during the playoffs it would pretty much scuttle the tournament and the integrity of it as well (say EP got it, or Pastrnak or McDavid)...even one player and it’s a huge problem both for the integrity of the playoffs and for the chances of it continued. Given the success in Canada so far (in the US 10 states are now getting more cases then ever - including California, Texas and Nevada so that pretty much eliminates them as “hub states”....Dallas, Vegas etc... Strange times for sure. At this point the municipal, provincial and federal governments in Canada are on board (many players have already travelled back to their cities and are training now) so it appears a green light for the West at least. Toronto or Columbus have decent odds at getting the green light too. Whether the NHLPA agrees to it is still a question mark, but given how many players have already returned and spoken about it I’d be surprised if they voted against it. Protesting likely has something to do with the recent rash of cases in some US states (others are dropping it’s a bit of a yo-yo done there)... Things aren’t that different then Sweden now as far as economies go - and the number of cases in Canada now are much easier traced which is very positive especially given things are re-opening. I’m pleasantly surprised and do think the odds of this now happening are pretty good.
  7. LE - McEwen plus Luongo cap - maybe I should have been more specific (= about 10% of the cap). Sure some teams also have some duds on the roster too, but add Sutter (he’s fine when he plays), Bear etc we are in a pickle right now if we want to maximize our cap space before these things (contracts) run out. Which is why on paper at least right now could be our best opportunity for the next year or two... Wasn’t talking about Covid or if fans will be allowed back in, revenue sharing - of course every team is in the same spot on that front. Without the cap recapture and LE and Bear that’s a marquee player or TT, and everyone re-upped and some money saved for raises next year right? Does it make sense now?
  8. Throw aways might be a bit dramatic but even without Covid the Macro view is we won’t be able to maximize the cap until they are over. Hard to ice the best team when 10% ish is not available...McEwen could replace LE and it would be a wash ...plus Luongo right? This year we have an opportunity we won’t likely have for at least two more years unless two or three young guys really step up. No they aren’t throw aways, but expectations should also be managed. If anything the balance of power in our division shifting away from the CALI teams should help even things out a little. Same with Seattle coming in and ARI leaving ...
  9. For sure. It’s more about reasonable expectations then anything. We won’t ice as deep a team next year / cap restricted and all. Unless a player or two breakout we can’t expect a better result then this year that’s facts. Sure it could happen, but it’s just as lowly to go down or maybe just stay around the same. The other thing to consider is will QHs and EP earn their paycheques. Most likely but they don’t always do (see Bobby Ryan). I’m not at all worried about that though - I see us taking 2 or 3 more seasons before our peak starts...and then 4-6 years of the playoffs...every year before they make the it including this year is a bonus.
  10. The title of the thread has merit and I’ve felt this way before Covid 19 or anything else for awhile now. I don’t think we can ice as deep a lineup next year - and for the most part we will be reliant on the emerging core taking another step cap-wise. Have said several times over the course of the year to not be surprised or even expect a down year and another lottery pick next season. To me it’s not a lot different then the first year Luongo arrived. With the exception that I don’t have any blinders on and think we will be president trophy winners anytime soon (but am hopeful we can challenge in our own division). All I’m trying to say is good things are coming but we aren’t there yet. As far as your question goes no way for Tanev absolutely for Markstrom. Tanev has a lot of hard miles on him and is often injured... or should I say always. JM is a goalie with only a couple years of starter burden under him. Bower player 14 AHL seasons before joining the NHL...Roy and Brodeur - not to mention Hasek who was around 27 when he went on his run of Vezina’s. Have zero concern about signing JM, other then NOT signing him. We will be ok without Tanev, heck 35% of the time he’s not there anyways. That said I’d still want him here next year. A one year deal is good for us - and right now UFAs won’t get nearly what they normally do so Tanev could come out of this roses too by playing next season, not getting majorly injured (two years in a row... is it possible ha ha) and cashing in somewhere else. Most UFAs this year will be at a bargain relatively.
  11. The first two sentences are very strange, given that UFAs get paid for past performance mostly and rarely earn their entire paycheque’s when RFAs for the most part do. Sure either TT or JV could under or over perform but the odds are definitely in JVs favour - how much of a raise are you expecting? Again I wonder how many points TT would have managed playing mostly on the third and fourth line. Even if JVs peaking now he’s still worth another 1 - 1.5 compared to 5-5.5 for say five years of TT. Yes I agree as of right now TT is the better player. But this about cap. And points per dollar and minutes played JV is a better option- especially considering age. Edit: And on Horvat. He’s used to being the top line on the Canucks for several years. It’s not like the Sedins did much their final years. Horvat and BB was the top line their final year. So now with Miller EP and BB/TT I’d say he’s even more insulated (Pearson, Horvat and LE) then he’s used to. Saying our third line makes the second line take more of a brunt is simply ridiculous compared to how it used to be. TG relied heavily on JV this year - don’t think any other player was moved around more then him because he’s VALUABLE. He was criticized heavily for putting him on the fourth line - but he did it because it gave us better match ups. I think your taking TT 13 or so games way more seriously then you should. BB isn’t at all expendable. Not many Canuck draft picks all-time have managed more then him in three years. Saying TT is better cap management then JV may be right - who knows. But the past shows that UFAs don’t often earn their pay-cheque’s where as RFAs do and that’s what I’m trying to say - as well as JV would have surpassed Hansen’s best season (where he had a lot of top six time) so he’s isn’t a terrible investment. It really comes down to how much of a raise he gets and what TT could be signed for right? So let’s leave it at that for now.
  12. Wow you really don’t like this guy. Nobody on our team produced at a better point per dollar off their ELC or beyond. I just find it counterintuitive to propose singing TT and trading JV when cap space is the primary discussion. Wonder how many points he’d manage playing mostly on the third and fourth line? Again when he gets the better line mates his production goes up - go figure. And don’t compare Leivo - that guy had plumb assignments and could still barely keep up. Leivo is an easy cut, spent all his time in the top six ... until he was injured. Glad you brought up his PP production. On the second unit! What could he do on the first? Nobody on the team with the exception of Horvat has paid his dues more then JV. Throw the guy a bone and see what he can do with it. We can trade him later if his stock goes up.
  13. This I absolutely agree with... any cap dumps (Sutter) will come at a high cost...good post. Not trying to pick on you - your posts are usually well thought out .
  14. What? He played all over our lineup and was contributing most nights - often the best player on whatever line he was on. Not sure who you were watching ... on pace for over 20 goals and 45ish points is excellent production for a guy who doesn’t pad his stats on the PP. And you want to trade BB too and sign TT - wonder how they compared 5 x 5 and points per minute not including the PP? He’s one was one of our best 5 x 5 players and at his cap hit a complete steal. Give the guy another short bridge ... will still be cheap. 20 goal scorers have value...yeah he did great when he got better line mates go figure. For me at least, this wasn’t marginal improvement- and IF that’s his peak he’s doing exactly what Hansen did for 10 or so years for us. Those guys are valuable - and I doubt we’ve seen the best from him yet. Even if we have he’s still helped the team tremendously. Compare his value to anyone else in the league - McDavid 12.5....did he score 300ish points? Edit: BTW Hansens best season he scored 22 goals and 38 points. In 81 games. Next best goal totals 16...and he only broke 30 points a few times ... good grief. As far as his “terrible start and terrible finish goes”. ... well he scored 9 points his first 20 games...14 his next 20...9 his next 20 and 4 his last 9 games...seems pretty consistent to me. Also the most I could find was 5 games without a point - and pretty sure that was the stretch TG had him on the fourth line. If he finished the final 13 games it’s pretty reasonable to suggest he’d easily of and a 20/20 season, which BTW is about an average TT season. Id wager if he played on the first line, and got first unit PP time, played 18-20 minutes a game that with the way he played this year 30/30 would’ve been a certainty.
  15. Our cap mess starts the following season ... or let’s just say it gets worse. Trading JV and Demko (relatively cheap players) makes zero sense. JV might get one million more in a show me deal that’s about it. Demko - nobody is going to give us anything for him before the ED, can’t think of one team that would use their protection slot on him unless a full on tank mode is in play - so maybe, maybe Detroit. OTT rebuild is coming along fast - maybe them but just can’t see it. Nobodies going to trade for Sutter without it costing us even with “retention”. Players teams would be interested in our the same ones we want to keep! Pearson is probably the odd man out. We have a glut of wingers, middle bottom six ones. His stock is high, his cap is very reasonable and we could get at least a 2nd for him. Leivo will want a raise. Don’t sign him and trading Pearson is enough cap to sign JV and Markstrom. All this talk on signing TT is mute if he’s not interested. Say he is then we will have to do a cap dump...but what if Ferland comes back, plays a few games and his bell is rung again? Can pretty much guarantee his cap will be in play and he can be on Robidas island. We could spin this all day...TT can play on our bench if Ferland and Leivo are out. Plus maybe one minor thing. With no buyouts and a flat cap management could also appeal to the league to forgive the re-capture penalty. Since we are already in fantasy land why not just take that off too ha ha. Yes I see that the teams going to be in some cap trouble once EPs and QHs are up. But we aren’t in a “mess”. We will lose a few players next year that’s for sure. But we more then have the depth for it, and a prospect pool that’s ready to add 1-3 players a year for the foreseeable future. For the record I don’t want to trade Pearson. But I’d rather see him go then BB. We shouldn’t be trading core players. As far as RHD goes .... well draft one. Re-sign Tanev for one year (its in the works now and he’s interested for sure). And when the timing is right use some of the extra money to make a trade or pick up another second pairing guy in free agency. Personally, compared to other teams, I think we will be in a great cap position going forward. As long as no other dumb UFA signings are made. Our top players make 5.25-6. Two more years from now as of right now more then half the team is without a contract. A lot of flexibility. Guys like Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Ferland were brought in to insulate...hard to do from the infirmary ha ha. The first three will be done soon enough. Ferland has all the ear markings to be the “new” Sutter. That sucks. TT is a near shiny new toy - scores at a PGP (something Pearson almost did too when he first came) but he’s not a first line player. If he couldn’t stick with Kopitar what makes everyone think he’s going to here? 4.75 is about his value as a UFA. Have heard as high as 7 on the open market - ha ha laugh barf. Neal got 5.75 and scored a lot more then TT has ever done. And became and anchor...somewhat recovered from that but on McDavids wing Maroon scored 27 goals right? Maybe we sign him and things will work out. It’s far more likely and best case we get his career normal production or 40-45 points. Blinders are on hard right there. Personally I think the best thing to do is stand pat with who we have and let these contracts shed organically...don’t buyout anyone it doesn’t help our future we still have to pay it - just for twice as long. Why buy-out Bear? One million of his cap hit already doesn’t count .... want to save money put two or three of our extra middle sixers in the AHL...starting with LE, and then maybe Sutter if AG can take his spot ... Pearson and Leivo .... and LE in the minors. That’s over 6 million right there.
  16. Yeah it looks like they would be stuck with Faulk...if they want to sign AP Parayko might have to be moved for something cheaper (guy on ELC maybe) ... a lot of teams would be interested in that. All this makes sense (the above)...would be hard to move on the from the team leader, especially after winning a cup. He’s making 6.5 now, a 2.5 raise seems likely, on the market he could command Subban type money ... then again Carlson signed for 8 so maybe he’d be ok with a small raise of 1.5 just to keep the band together...shouldn’t be to hard to find 1.5-2.5 million ... but one things for sure that will be one expensive right side if they keep him. And it probably means the writings on the wall for Parayko too, when he’s up in a couple years. I think they will keep him and deal with the cap issues as they come up as a result. Hes one of the leagues best RHDs, consistently scores around 45-50 points year in year out and seems to be getting better with age. Could easily be one of these defenseman (Burns, Lidstrom, Schneider, Visnovsky) that has their best seasons in their 30’s. Rumours are they want him locked in at an OEL type deal, 8.25 x 8. If they do some serious damage again this playoffs I think he will be signed for sure. If not then still think they will make it work. He’s a cornerstone they won’t replace. Have to admit the Faulk deal is a head scratcher. He’s not very good defensively, never has been, does add scoring from the d for sure (goals especially)....I guess WNP did it with Byfuglien, Trouba and Myers...but that didn’t work out so good for them at all did it?
  17. A lot of NHLers stayed in the US near their teams. And now a lot have already travelled home (it’s “essential I suppose ha ha”) and are practicing at whatever facilities are close to their teams. Are we talking rioting or Covid or both? Makes sense to me to get out ... but some European players spent their Covid time in places like Florida (and don’t play in Miami or Tampa). Others stayed at their places in PIT, COL or wherever, most have come home or are soon on the way. One thing is for sure they want a hub city in the East and they want a hub city in the West, 3 Canadian cities and 7 US ones are being considered. The players themselves have already agreed to the format, it’s understandable that Minnesota is probably out. Think Columbus, PIT or TO are the likely targets of the 10 overall cities named as possible hubs in the East.
  18. I agree. The danger zones are pretty obvious and and tracing is working for the moment...I think either EDM or Vancouver is all but a lock for the West, would think they would try and pick a city in the east too which would mean PIT or Columbus makes some sense...maybe TO if that’s the safer option. Cases are way down in Ontario but TO is still a hot spot.
  19. Vancouver and EDM have passed municipal, provincial and federal hurdles as of today - Trudeau approved it on the federal level and the other two were a while back. Not sure about Ontario but TO is the other Canadian city. 7 US cities have made a bid, don’t know how their individual states will deal with it but as of things right now it’s a green light in both Vancouver and EDM.
  20. Vancouver is a very likely destination. Think either EDM or CAL are too. Don’t be a sour puss. So far everything is going very well. Edit: BC has done extremely well. FYI where I live within 130kms more cases of Covid 19 have been established then the entire province of BC. And nobody in our county (that’s what they call them in ONT) has been affected. With 100ish new cases a week it’s very easy to track it. That’s in the entire province. Maybe it will happen, maybe it won’t. But I’m pretty sure it will given what’s been going on in the States and how percentage to population it’s not overwhelming at this point. It almost a certainty that the two hub cities will be in Canada. And it won’t matter a lick.
  21. Somehow since expansion, NYR and to a lesser degree TO seem to be the place most marquee UFAs or players go through at one point. Obviously the cap changed that significantly- but it still is happening. The late 90’s early 2000 NYR teams on paper were at times absolutely ridiculous. Easily matched the 2002 Detroit team - really quite hilarious given it just never seemed to click. Point is if a team REALLY wants him - they will clear the cap space to fit him in. NYR is always in the conversation as a destination, with Panarin and some good young players their rebuild could become one of the shortest in recent memory. It’s their model and they’ve been doing it for decades now. When did they go to the final with Lundqvist again? 2017? 2016? Not that long ago. Trouba, Panarin and Kakko is quite the haul in a 12 month period. Three core players - one a Hart candidate who has a decent chance of winning it (best 5 x 5 stats of the group). St. Louis could also move Faulk and one other guy and just keep him at home. They have lots of guys that other teams would be happy to have.
  22. LE is obvious...won’t cost the owners much he’s already or soon to be paid the bulk of his contract. No way on Myers, solid RHDs are hard to fine and his contract is more then fair. Elder went down and Myers played his best hockey this year during that span, even won a spot on the second PP unit. And it was no coincidence for the first time in forever both Tanev and Edler were relatively healthy...because he was taking hard minutes away from them. Myers is a decent second pairing second pairing defenseman - can’t believe how much flak the guy has received...well then again look at how much Eagle endured during our down years so it’s not that surprising really. QH and Myers were massive upgrades on Hutton and Gudbranson. I highly doubt two buyouts will occur. It’s possible the NHPLA will agree to one but two is a big hit on escrow, which is already likely to go way up if fans can’t go to games this fall. Not to mention all the revenue lost with close to 200 games not played without fans and the playoff revenue all but caput. Players still got paid - but didn’t produce. Must be nice to have an employer like that. Given all the work the league has done to get hockey back as soon as possible the players might be willing you never know - but the owners might say forget it as well. Anyways it’s a fun exercise. IF this happens and there is the regular two year timeline, if I was JB I’d payout LE and save the other one for when it’s really needed. Don’t think AG is ready to take on cantering the third line full-time yet, Maddens gone so no center depth in the future worth talking about other then Podz moving there (which is a very real possibility). Most our vets are done after next year anyways ... maybe Ferland if he’s healthy could be bought out but that could be a total waste if he goes back on the LTIR or actually plays and plays well for us right? Pearson is a perfect player to trade ATM, his stock is high, we have a glut of wingers and it’s debatable if he will get another contract with EP and QHs coming up soon. To clear cap don’t sign Leivo and make a trade with a player that someone would actually want - love Pearson on the team but he’s expendable and his stock is higher then ever right now. That should pay for Markstrom and JV right there.
  23. And somewhere in villages all over Africa, are Stanley Cap Champ hats with all the other teams including 2 of ours at least with folks walking around with finals losers hats. The alternate Universe on planet earth. Or the land of misfit cup losers hats. Did they print this out early just in case? Or is it photoshopped?
