[Report] Canucks to part ways with Judd Bracket
IBatch replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
Thanks Spook...thought of adding Bear, just because he cost us a 2nd...but Forsling is a good call. Definitely are still guys not from last years draft that could make it...3-4 guys...was it 7 guys JB stated we had that could possibly make the show (including last years draft)? Pretty sure it was. That would be pretty awesome, especially if one or two turn into core guys. -

Well maybe you need to do a little research and find out what is considered an acceptable drafting level. How many guys does the average team with an average draft position except to get each draft? Also spend some time to figure out what scouts consider a bust and what they don’t consider a bust based on the first and second round ... and all the rounds collectively after that. And what’s a bust from 1-3, 4-6,7-10,11-15,16-31 overall etc. Hint. If you don’t get a player in a draft from the first round no matter the position you’ve failed. That said there is a huge difference between a top ten pick and a 25-31ish pick too. Also only 40% of the second rounders maybe might play 200 games. Or one every second or third year... After that around 12.5% of all the rounds together will get a NHL player ... so about one every EIGHT years or so on average. To really dumb it down GMs except 1 NHLer each draft with a complete compliment of picks ... anything more is a bonus really. 2 is above average - three is outstanding. So simply evaluating that JB has JV, BB, Demko, AG, Tryamkin, McAAn, EP and QHs so far. He’s missed on OJ so far he’s a bust for sure based on draft position alone, but he’s also managed to get EP and QHs, both arguably one of if not the best players in the draft so far with a 5th and 7th overall (which is pretty darn good). 2nd founders that play 200 NHL games are not busts at all, neither are guys past the 2nd round that play that many games of course too. As of right now JV is about to pass his bust/not a bust scout evaluation too (6–10 overall 5-6 seasons). So a break even minimum expectation would be 6 players. And that’s not really fair yet because it takes a few years to develop your picks / the last two drafts maybe shouldn’t be included yet. Let’s just take Podz draft out ... so five drafts he’s got three core guys, four middle six players, and one KHL bolted defenseman and a backup goalie with starter upside. That’s 9 guys from five drafts. Not too shabby - definitely above average drafting. Almost outstanding. THN does an equalizer where they take each team, their ADP (average draft position) over a five year period and then have scouts rank all the 21 and unders on each team and compare them to each other. Vancouvers ADP was 7 over that time period last time they did it - and they were given a plus four because we had the 3rd highest ranked group in the league of 21 and unders... in other words even though we drafted around 7 for five years - we drafted like we averaged 3rd overall. Half the teams were worse, the other half better - it put us in the top third overall drafting in the league since Benning took over. Does that make him a guru? Hardly. But it does make him good. And he deserves some props for it for sure. -
So the OTHER 69%?

Let’s just say JB and crew learned their lesson and hasn’t since ignored the BPA (MT - not a big fan but sure I would be if he was on our team as well, and during draft day cheered when he landed on our lap - then nearly threw the remote when we didn’t take him). Sorry Coastal. Sure their is a SLIM chance he will still make it and make and impact, but I’ve watched him with my own eyes and he wasn’t even the best defenseman on his own team ( Brisbois was does that mean he’s going to be a top four guy soon?). Given his draft position he’s getting all the PP time in the world to pad his stats and 5 x 5 he’s ho-hum at the AHL level. Temper your expectations. I hope I’m wrong. He’s a work in progress but as of right now is already on every bust list available (check it out - not a joke). So yeah - picking EP and then QHs and then Podz is definitely making up for OJ. Edit: What year was he drafted again? And what year is it now? -
Where I live probably more cases within 100 miles then all of BC... a tad scary and it seems we are getting so used to a steady stream of new cases that the impact isn’t quite what it was but this is far from over. Family in Quebec too (sucks not getting to visit). Doesn’t matter where you are everyone’s life’s have been affected and it won’t stop until a cure/vaccine is given to 38ish million Canadians...likely take months once we get to that point. Until then humanity will remain under the constant threat of Covid 19 and the economic affects for a long time after for a lot of regular folks. Definitely no laughing matter and shouldn’t be dismissed. “Just like the flu “... “don’t care if I get it” - what about the people you could infect etc? Not sure if it’s naive, ignorant or sociopathic. Maybe a mix of all of three. Everyone has a responsibility to each other now more then ever. I slip up too. Hard to have a real conversation using a device online ... sometimes (me for sure) read what you write before hitting the send button ha ha.

This is a shout out the CDC in general. Has anyone noticed Alf posting ? A month or so I queried this too - sorry if this is insensitive ahead of time - just a little worried about the furry fella is all. Im not sure how to use the messaging aspect otherwise I’d try that channel. Anyone? Noticed this thread is getting the most traffic - didn’t want to make a thread...yet. Need him back. Hire Babcock and all. Thanks CDC, not the easiest of times and would be pretty sad if we lose any members no matter the activity- but especially a regular champ like Alf. Maybe just taking a sabatical?

This is exactly what the media’s framed. Who really knows - it’s all supposition. Again I’m truly looking forward to a tell all or something from the horses mouth. I’ve seen this same story floating around the CDC and parroted a few times now. It sounds good and maybe it’s the case. Personally to me it says a lot that soon after we are hiring UFAs again like wildfire and trading a first for Miller (which also adds fuel to the fire). JB has being towing the line since he started here that we could be right back on top and in the playoffs. Which adds credibility to the idea that Linden wanted to take a more long term approach. In the end it results matter and there is no denying that JB is getting those. My only issue is using Linden and his good name as a human shield. And that he’s no longer here when things are looking up. Shame. -

Ha ha. Isn’t he? Plus JB was the GM ... the President. How do you know Linden was pushing for LE? It’s not his job. The Sedins were untradeable so taking the stance to respect contracts and their tenure is a good one IMO. Don’t diss Linden and not expect getting called out. Experienced or not - he did a fine job of taking and eating sh!tburgers the entire time he was here. Which I suspect was part of the point of the hire from the start. Facts are facts. He hired JB. That’s his job and PR. The rest is JB job. -

I’m not sure what this even means. Linden wanted to win a cup with this organization and came back with that sole goal in mind. That’s exactly what he’s said many times. He’s rich and doesn’t need the money. Bet he’d have done it for free. The rift had something to do with a different viewpoint on how to go about that. I believe he wanted to take more time to get the right picks in place where as JB felt we had enough and continues with the idea we can get it done earlier - pretty obvious with the Miller trade. Who cares if we replaced him with whomever. Linden is the most influential Canuck ever. All i said was he was used like a human shield (which he was) and that I look forward too the time when whatever the rift was about comes to light. I’m sure a lot of others would also like to know what actually happened too. It smells a little. Curb him before the team even gets out of its low cycle. Francis , Yzerman, Shanahan etc...it’s not like he’s the only recent player to go from playing to that job. And he had some credibility and credintials given his leadership with the NHLPA. -

Good post. For sure it’s a group effort. Even past our scouting staff and right down to the lower tier guys who are drinking bad coffee and travelling the provinces and European countries scouring talent for their junior A teams and onward. All amateur and pro scouts rely on local talent - often first before they pursue a certain player asking them if the game they just saw was the normal - or if he had an off game or whatever they need to know about a particular player - often watching side by side too. It’s the first thing that happens in a lot of cases (calling the local scouts and asking around). Also it’s very common that a team commits to viewing one player but notices someone else completely. It’s a pretty fluid situation. In the past on this subject a lot of recognition was going to Delmore which is great - the team did an awesome job of preparing for that draft and getting their guy (from top to bottom). I just wanted to add some light to it and how it was both a stroke of good luck and a bit of a fluke it happened at all. It’s early yet but before Makar had his rookie year a lot of media attention came heavily into why teams missed on EP and what teams may or may not of picked him in the top ten had they had the chance (or passed on him), rightly so and a fun exercise. Who knows how honest teams are on the subject- only the NYR say they’d have picked him but even that is a little suspicious given our team was the one in the loop and nobody else spent the same time viewing him. EP is special - Hammarstrom likened the comparison to playing with Gretzky and scouting both Forsberg and Jagr while in PHI. Saying he had the “it” factor or was just plain special. His teammates obviously felt the same giving him the Alien moniker ... A long time ago Lafleur followed a similar path. All the ice time he’d ever want and the determination and desire to be the best and work endlessly on his individual skills without “pro trainers/skill coaches” influencing him. The product is obviously something new and different. I’ve never read anything about a player identifying 12 weaknesses in his shot and then spending months perfecting each aspect. Crosby maybe but even that’s different as he’s had all the help at his fingertips since the start. Look forward to a time in the future when this story becomes legendary because I think it will. Best part is leading up to the draft not much more then a little blurb about EP was available but Patrick was hyped for two years ... Hirschier changed that a bit after the WJs...then it’s was mostly about those two. The draft in general was supposed to be underwhelming given the Mathews, McDavid ones prior to it - with a lot of good guys but nothing spectacular. And Jack Hughes and Kakko were supposed to be otherworldly right? Cautionary tale about the hype. Dahlin’s draft was all about defense and rightly so. The “next Lidstrom”. Lafreniere... I’m sure he will be great. But only time will tell about all these guys. Edit: want to add because of the lack of information and even hype around EP I was pretty sure Glass or Valardi were the BPA. Kudos to JB right on down for having an excellent draft. So far they’ve done it three times ... picking the BPA or better given their draft position in the first round. Most teams would be very happy with those odds. -
(Proposal) Canucks and ducks.
IBatch replied to RowdyCanuck's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Manson is a great long term replacement for Tanev and one of the Ducks players they could use to add picks and youth into their next rebuild. Not sure when he’s up for his next deal but if we could trade for him that included a new deal I’d be pretty stoked. JV .... and what? -
Vancouver has zero leverage over Seattle to get them to take LE just by selecting Demko. It’s almost a certainty we would be protecting Markstrom and exposing Demko. They simply take whomever they want that is left unprotected. Every team in the league last ED hoped Vegas would pick an expensive player ... it wasn’t hard for them to make the floor. Additionally much has been said about how GMs have wised up and won’t be giving away extras like they did with Vegas just so a certain player is picked instead. Back-ups are one of the easiest positions to fill. Demko would have to be lights out to get protected instead - and we’d be in a better state if that happened and he took over from Markstrom- let them pick Markstrom in that case and save money. The reason Demko keeps coming up in trade threads is most fans know there is a decent chance we will lose him for nothing - hard pill to swallow but that’s how this works - and if not him then another player for nothing. We will also be exposing a glut of middle six players so who knows who they pick. On defense we are sorted as we won’t need to protect Edler and with a one year deal getting hashed out with Tanev right now likely him too. This means we’d be able to protect 5 of our top six D’s. AHL guys could get nabbed though...maybe OJ if we don’t protect him? Back to Demko. The timing isn’t right for an actual deal at this point. Whomever traded for him has to be in the position where they are also willing to protect him...how many teams would even consider this? OTT and DET are the right answers at least. Both don’t have a guy as good as Demko in their system as of right now. They’d have to be very high on him - and unfortunately his stock isn’t that high. I doubt we’d get much more then we did for Lack if we traded him (and his sp was around .920 at the time) now even if the ED wasn’t an issue. Too many great back-ups and solid proven vets floating around. The time to trade Demko is after the ED and if his play is pushing his pay up too much and the right deal comes around (and only if Markstrom is aging like fine wine). Goalies don’t get much really...Schneider was one of the better hauls ever pick wise and he was a top five league wide goalie at the time. What did MTL get for the great Patrick Roy again? A plethora of mediocrity.

Buying out LE makes no sense at this point. All it will do is prolong the pain another 4 years (it all counts against the cap in the end). Next season if LE is still here, JB won’t have much choice other then to trade him the same way TO was forced to trade Marleau. It cost them a first rounder for one season. I do agree IF we moved him that that money can’t be used past this season only - as we will need it for Hughes and EP for sure. Tanev looks to be getting a one year deal (which is perfect for us and Q Hughes), JV needs another contract, and with the rest (Stetcher or his replacement etc) the money will be more then gone by the time next season starts. Factually we can’t afford to ice the same team we did this season next year without some movement. Maybe Roussel gets moved ... Leivo is gone for sure. I see the bench getting a little slimmer and losing some depth. Ferland say he’s back - so his cap space counts soon too. Something has to shake out if the team plans to sign TT (he might have zero interest who knows). I don’t think JB is in too much cap troubles next season - but it will be tighter then the current one - the one after that is going to be tough even with LE gone. 6 million won’t be enough to cover both QH and EP. Same with Luongos money available the year after that. 12-15 million is a conservative estimate to cover those twos next deals.

For at least another season this is about the only type of deal that I would be happy with as far as trading BB goes. It better be lopsided big time in our favour or no thanks. Neely..lets just says it’s too early to really know what we have with Brock. He’s a leader, extremely well liked in the locker room and great with fans. We all watched him seemingly score at will before the all-star game (which he did the best display of accuracy I’ve seen yet, and was MVP). He’s just getting started...at worse he’s peaked and all we get is a 30ish goal scorer ahh shucks. At best he’s a future rocket Richard Trophy winner and ends up there with Naslund and Bure as one of the best snipers we’ve ever had. His shot reminded me of Hulls his first year - it was that hard and spot on. BB will get stronger that’s a fact. His injuries should heal and hopefully it was just bad luck (well two of them were bad luck so I’m going with that). Speaking of Rocket Richard he also started his career with some bad luck and injuries - good thing the Habs didn’t give up on him too early - and neither should we. Most have been super patient with JV...BB not so much. -

Ristolainen was getting a lot of his points on the PP. Still produced ok without them too but unless he’s getting them here I wouldn’t expect 40 points from him... You should see what the Sabres fan on this site thinks of Risto and how fair the trade is. I seriously am curious. Couple that with a dreadful plus minus his entire career (yes Buffalo sucked - Edler has some bombs too, as did Tanev but not THAT bad) I’m really unsure whether he’s not just a worse version of Myers ... or like TO’s mainstay that had no takers and then signed for around 4 million in CAR. He’s a top four D on a bad team, but his defensive game has always been suspect. Not a great partner for Hughes that’s for sure. I’d rather have a solid defensive defenseman like Manson paired with Hughes - or just keep signing Tanev until that is no longer the best option (some big miles on his body - but a big part of that was because we didn’t have anyone else - now we have Myers also munching hard minutes and it’s helped for sure). Reinhart is a good winger in his own right - but I also wonder how many points he’d get without Eichel padding his stats. I’m sure BB would do better then Reinhart. Risto is five years younger then Tanev so that’s a big plus. At the same age I’d say the value is comparable. Maybe Ristolainen would be a great fit - or maybe he won’t. I think BB in his prime will be a consistent 35-40 goal guy, around a PGP. Which happens to be what the Sedins managed all but two of their prime years. He’s already got a similar career PGP and GPG as D Sedin. Point is there is some risk with this trade in losing the better player. All in all not a terrible trade. Risk reward I suppose. Edit: On Toffoli. The only year he broke 50 points was his last contract year. He’s a serviceable middle six vet who plays the game the right way - there is no denying that. That said there is no certainty he’s going to be a 70 point player for us either. Pearson lit up the lamp too his first couple weeks with us and hasn’t disappointed since either (although that line pads their stats with EN goals a lot). I doubt he’s going to pull a Marchand and become a top player on a line with EP and Miller but do think 60 points is doable (despite being 20 points or so above his career norm). 4.9 x 4-5 does seem about right though (have read he could demand 7 which is pure lunacy - adios on anything more then 5.25 IMO). BB as a rookie was on pace for close to 40 goals. Injuries have slowed him down...Skinner is a good comparable IMO - a former Calder winner who also went through a series of concussions early on which de-railed him somewhat but despite that put up very good numbers his entire career. BB has more upside then TT and Risto. I wouldn’t trade him unless it’s for a top pairing D around the same age or at most a few years older. Parayoko, Sanhiem, Provorov, Dumba etc. Otherwise just keep him. Risto isn’t really a great fit IMO. Maybe paired with Edler I don’t know - but Q Hughes is a rover who needs a guy just like Tanev backing up his risk. Lumme Murzyn .... some of our best D pairings ever had one watching the Fort so the other could roam around. -

Two things about Ristolainen - he’s feasted on the PP, where he gets around half his points, and he’s had some dreadful minus seasons (all of them so far - part of that is a bad team - but he’s usually at the bottom of the list compared to his teammates). I don’t think that’s what Hughes needs as a partner - ATM JB is working on a one year deal with Tanev, I think that would be perfect for the current cap and the ED draft looming. Won’t have to protect either Edler or Tanev - where as we would have to use one of our spots for Risto if we did acquire him given he’s the main reason for the trade. Ristolainen should get better - he’s no longer their top RHD that jobs Dahlins, it’s not the worse idea in the world - but I have to wonder how his gaffes would be treated by our fan base given how Myers did after one year. And it’s not like he was a -45 or something- during a season where at one point Buffalo led the entire league (thanks to Hutton). Nothing wrong with a minus 2, I suppose this year not facing the leagues best did wonders for him. I’d be cautiously optimistic if we acquired him...would prefer Dumba but injuries matter I suppose. It is a blockbuster that’s for sure. -

You’ve pretty much nailed it. He used to scout for PHI - and is responsible for them picking Forsberg at 6 as well as adamantly telling them to go for Jagr despite him basically telling everyone he wouldn’t play for them (and secretly telling PIT he’d play with Mario so which we all know is what happened)...they picked Ricci (and sent both over for Lindros). Guess we were lucky...have tried a few times to share this information and got blasted (NO it was Delmore!) ... nice to see some people looking deeper into it - nothing wrong with JB comments - but it does show that there can be more behind the story and both Delmore and Brackett deserve props too / but neither “discovered” him. And Very likely never would have without the awesome tip. He was a little off the board at five, But they certainly did their homework and kept it under wraps. One of the better scouting success stories we’ve ever had. I for one was shocked when we took him. At the time there was limited information about him and the draft as a whole it was quite underwhelming- no “franchise” or super hyped guys ... Nolan Patrick so far really isn’t too far from his namesake Patrick Stefan at this point ...Hirschier is ho hum for a first overall...Makar has just had a fantastic rookie year..as a 20 year old. Heiskanen is looking very solid too. But EP is the “Alien” and out of all of them looks to have the chops to challenge for an Art Ross in his prime ... and he’s ours! -

In an odd way we should be thanking Ulf Dahlen for being close friends with Inge, and then having a son who played on the same team and was good friends with EP that happened to end up playing in Timra together. It was Dahlen Inge went to watch, but it was EP he ended up picking up that “special” vibe from right away. He used playing against Wayne Gretzky as an example of how he exuded a lot of the same “special” and how he was able to spot it. He wasn’t ranked that high because of where he was playing and because of being so darn skinny. In a re-draft Makar is probably his stiffest competition. Love that he “learned center” at the NHL level - something he’s still working on but seriously wow this kid is dynamite. Also he reached out to the Canucks and had to get them to come to Sweden/Timra to check him out a couple of times. Not sure at which point he became their guy if still available at 5, or what they would have done if Hirshier or Patrick were also available...a perfect storm of circumstances for us - again lotto ball Karma. Same with Hughes but to a lesser degree. For me this made up for OJ. -

Inge Hammarstrom discovered EP and insisted the Canucks take a look at him first and urged the them to pick him from the start...he doesn’t get the recognition but he’s the guy we should all be thanking. Also the same guy that had to push PHI into taking Forsberg at 6 in 1991, and urged to take Jagr too - instead they picked Ricci. ... as a player he was one of the first ever guys to come from the European leagues (TO I think..)... his track record is pretty darn good. Just glad Delmore was convinced- but it was not Delmore at the start. It was a bit of luck at that. EP like Lafleur is completely self taught - no skill coaches, a cerebral player who learned on his own - grew up in a small town 100kms from Timra (where Inge lives) and playing second tier is where he first became noticed by Hammarstrom. We as an organization played it cool. We should also be grateful we didn’t get the first or second overall pick that year as I’m not sure we’d have passed on one of the big two (Hirschier/Patrick). Lotto ball Karma. THN covered this well a few years ago - can google the article. -

I doubt any pro scouts are “ out right bad”. At least none that have put the time in and aren’t granted a job post career (and those guys are still pros too). Much has been said about scouting EP. Who was it exactly that insisted they should look at him in the first place and insisted? And who actually got the recognition? -

Discussion: If you HAD to move Podkolzin....
IBatch replied to J-Dizzle's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Top ten is still not enough for them to gain that handle...since they haven’t been tops in anything yet. Kane has won hardware and I wouldn’t consider him generational...although he’s pretty close. - a maybe I guess. Kessel was top ten several years in a row (4/5ish) ... does that make him generational? BB was 4th in R wing scoring when he went down ... so yes he’d definitely get a better return then Podz. But who replaces him? And how with that affect EPs line? TT - well it’s unsure if he will sign. But it is a certainty that if we play career middle six guys with EP we shouldn’t be excepting stellar results (and hope we look for better quality wingers once money is available - like Vegas did with Stone and Patches). Maybe TT is the second coming of Marchand? What’s happening in Boston is far from normal but it does show anything is possible. Personally I think the team just needs to take a deep breath and work with what it has for the next two seasons. Use it’s youth to replace veteran 3/4 liners that are holding us down payroll wise - and use the saved money to plug holes and provide raises. I’m grateful we shouldn’t have a top heavy team - rather a hopefully a well balanced one. CHI hasn’t won anything since all their young star have been paid - a powerhouse disappeared in a few short years. We do need some better quality D prospects...and an Edler replacement - we should use the next two years to see how well we do internally on that front. -
Discussion: If you HAD to move Podkolzin....

The only generational players in the league right now are Crosby and Ovi...and probably McDavid. They get drafted and almost immediately show why the hype. And are at or near the top in their position year in year out. The HHOF is full of “franchise” players that aren’t generational talents. Usually these guys are a tier above the leagues stars and always one of the top player or two by position (first and second all-stars). Crosby is 6th all-time in PGP...Ovi would have owned the record for 50 goal seasons on his own this season (48 - and has to have the most R Richard trophies at this point even if they always existed)....and has good odds at finishing 2nd behind WG before his contract is up ... Both started their careers with 100 point seasons. One was 18 though (Crosby). McDavid broke his leg but also played at 18 and did well enough ... then exploded his second year ... playing on some so so EDM teams he’s managed a lot so far and he hasn’t peaked or hit his prime yet either. So yes - one or two per decade lines up pretty well. Bure is the only Canuck so far that maybe could get that handle ... he was pretty special. And scored more goals per games played then anyone from the time he started his career until it ended (during that span - Selanne was close though) .... EP and QHs would have to have pretty big breakouts to become top players in the league. It’s possible I suppose. Sure would be great for us fans, but I’d be happy with “franchise players” too. -
Why would we move AG for a pick? He’s already made the team isn’t that the point? And then you trade Sutter at 50% so there goes two centers..Noah Dobson is a maybe but not sure either party would be interested. As for LE and Demko, your dreaming neither Detroit or OTT is biting on that one (at least not without a nice add). Demko is likely our sacrifice to the alter of expansion- too easy to find a back-up and too many other young goalies available with just as much upside. Bear - cleared waivers twice - we’d be the ones retaining AND giving up a minor pick as a cap dump.
