  1. Ok your right- for whatever reason I had this in my head for years (Anson Mount does look and sound almost identical to him in Hell on Wheels...)...think my wife told me it was him and I believed her ha ha. Just checked yep - and she said she even “fact checked it” on the internet (which is close to a decade ago now)... watching the show at the time and playing the game it convinced me pretty fast. I found articles saying he’d be a perfect fit for playing Joel from when the show was on and the game was out. Looks a lot more like him and sounds a lot more like him then some other names I’ve seen floating around for HBO’s series ... Hughe Jackman would be the second best ... hard to take the wolverine out of that guy on screen.
  2. Why not just use the actual actor who played him in the first game Ashton Mount (not sure I spelled his first name right - main actor in a railway show that was pretty good). Used his voice in the first game and he’s a spitting image of himself in it too. Looks like they used a different voice actor for the second game but he did a great job of getting his voice down...
  3. I have the simulation here at home (DVD hi-tech right ha ha) - your correct they did spar a lot - and even though he was close to 50 he was still an animal (Rocky). Think it was called Super-Fight or something would have to go dig it up. Was funny as the computers they showed were gigantic and full of tape - and printed out type writer style. Their conclusion was Rocky would KO Ali in the later rounds... Ali must have been a good sport about it.
  4. Just watched those videos. With Pat Brennan (kick-boxer middleweight champ) just might be some of the best the Island has ever produced...
  5. I’ve watched all three in their entirety several times. Also watched the Fraser - Foreman bout and the Ali - Foreman bout Those three guys will be forever be considered the cream of the crop as far as I’m concerned - with the exception of Rocky Marciano ... who also should be considered with those guys. Sonny Liston was actually a great champion in his own right - and Ali dismantled him twice...yeah the Holmes fight was hard to watch - Ali was taking so many pills daily that he didn’t need to be taking...Holmes was also a pretty good champion too... Edit: That said Tyson was a student of the sport and studied all those guys ... watch his footwork and his ability to duck under punches and counter ... add that to his speed and power (only Ali punched quicker IMO of those guys) was hard to get past many rounds with him - and he beat some tough SOBs. Lewis and Holyfield were also good champions.. Edit: At the time when Tyson was obliterating fighter after fighter - it was all the rage to talk about how he’d match up to Ali in his prime. Some said Ali would win, some said Tyson. Before that it was would Ali beat Rocky. Actually have a video early computer simulation on who would win. Might surprise a lot of people to know Rocky came out on top. Punching like he threw the kitchen sink expression originated back then. Hard to argue against a guy who never lost a fight. (43 KOs 49 wins) Edit: Also have to say Tyson’s propensity for early KO’s is actually overshadowed by Rocky’s. Of his 43 KO’s most are within the first three rounds - and a lot in the first. Also KOed contenders in the first and second round ... as well as in the later rounds. Nobody ever beat the guy which is astounding - 49-0.
  6. Id take that. And be awfully proud of the team if somehow we managed it. When the season ended our playoff hopes had been slipping away for weeks...this however is a possibility - and even fair odds that some team that plays the first round could go all the way and lose after winning 16 games. But I think the five round series will be viewed as the season end.. even with all the extra games it won’t add up to the current standard of games played over a season. True observation though - strange times we are living in. Just hope with things relaxing people don’t blow it for everyone ... social distancing is still in affect but in the US in certain areas they don’t seem to care.
  7. He went the distance...then won the title by beating the guy that beat hollyfield but he was 46 I’m pretty sure at the time ... he rocked a Mohawk during his comeback too. One tough SOB and one of the greatest ever (with Ali and Fraser too). Just shows how darn good Ali must have been too...Fraser as well.
  8. Says he’s 230 - he boxed around 220 when he was younger...and beat all the bigger men of his era which was something else. Seemed invincible - Buster KO was a shock. Always was the smaller fighter so that likely won’t change. Foreman was 46 when he regained his belt but he was huge - 250ish lbs. Nobody expected him to win or go the distance with hollyfield but he almost KOed him a couple times (nobody hit him as hard or so he said about that fight)....then did the same thing to the guy who beat Holyfield that was done to him against Ali ... tricked him into tiring and used half power to get him to come inside and go toe to toe with him and then KOed him. Tyson looks brilliant in his training video - of course I doubt he will actually do what Foreman did which was have 20 or so real fights to get back to contender status - but it’s Tyson a legend before he was 25. If he learns the side game and really does get into great shape I wouldn’t put it past him to KO some young up and comers. edit: like a 41 year old Roberts on a 23 year old - wasn’t it Eager?
  9. I know one former junior hockey player who loves hockey who was so disgusted with the lock out that he stuck to his guns and hasn’t watched NHL hockey since ... (goes to junior games and participates in that but that’s about it). Maybe it will change if his son/nephew makes the show buts that’s probably what it would take (or the Habs making the final - one of the two). So absolutely I get where your coming from - milking fans at this point I’m with you and think it’s bad business. It’s possible their math guys will convince them otherwise...but I for one sure hope they don’t.
  10. Yeah I see your point. Folks that have already spent money for 1/5 of no service should get a bye and be allowed to watch a certain number of games until that money’s spent. I’m pretty sure they won’t ask people to pay anyways as with zero other sports available think a lot of people will watch games and PVR ones for later (I know I’d be doing that anyways). Given the looming TV deal viewership matters a lot of the NHL and I can’t see them risking a massive deal getting smaller by instilling pay per view measures - hard to be absolutely sure but personally think that bad for business. A lot of hockey fans could be unemployed right now and not participate in a pay per view format...also given a lot of folks are unemployed and have zero to do as all the housework has been done a month or so ago (ha ha) watching 2-4 games a day might seem mighty fine at this point. These are smart people..at least I think they should be smart people...still like I said earlier id pay a bit more if I had too (maybe up to or around 200$)... Have to wonder though if they asked viewers to pay 20$ a game for the cup final how many would do it? Depends on who’s playing for sure ... but even one million viewers is 20 million per game ... easy 80 million for the league and the players don’t get much of a cut no matter how much revenue is made aside from less escrow payments right? edit: and the above is very conservative... if the Canucks for example made the final how many folks would buck up to watch those games? Of course it’s based on households. But given we can’t gather they’ve got us by the short and curlies - it’s not like ten buddies can each chip in two bucks and watch it whomevers got the best man cave right? I’d think at least 2 million just from the Canucks side given how many fans are displaced and no longer live in BC. If TB makes it too? Not probably ideal although realisic. A lot of folks I’m sure. Could easily be 5 million on average per day a six game series ... that’s 600 million which go a long way in covering lost gate revenue for sure.
  11. The NHLPA and NHL have agreed on the 24 team playoff format (not every detail but it’s basically a done deal) - next step get government/medical approval.... The biggest possible hurdle is countries around the world agreeing to allowing their athletes to cross the border to participate in these games. Personally given that most have access to their own planes and flight crews - and that existing isolation protocols - don’t really see this as a major issue. Athletes and crews could be tested prior to take off - and when they are done and going home could agree to 14 days of isolation no problem. The athletes themselves have already been asked to keep safe in anticipation of finishing the season ... that said each country is different ... read an article about Laine and in Finland he’s been keeping himself busy with golf etc. Really believe that the entertainment value for everyone would be a great distraction. Personally I’d have no problem with spending a few hundred dollars if pay per view (different thread) was added ... yes times are hard but that’s not much different then a good night out or taking extended family for a nice dinner...which I’d not be doing even if restaurants opened up here.
  12. This debate won’t end until those that were around for the earlier uniforms are all dead (sad but true). The Orca at least has developed a better uniform around it - the first “scary” one was a good awful mess of black, red and purple garbage. We weren’t the only teams doing that back then - a lot of others changed things up and went full black because psychologically it was supposed to intimidate. The irony is we already had that going on with the previous uniforms and our team back then was tough as nails. Not sold on the new ones this year either - but I sure loved seeing our players in our black skate ones...and so did they themselves. Bieksa and Kesler commenting on how they had asked repeatedly to wear them when they were around as did others on that team kind of makes you wonder how the players feel about it too. I’ve grown to accept it - and would prefer we kept it too (Orca) rather then make another new change. But would be over the moon if we kept fin - and made the Orca the third jersey...and went back to any of the three before it.
  13. A few players went in way too early - and as result some didn’t make it in or if they did made it in later then maybe they should have. Hamhuis played a game on the same reliability level as some of the best we’ve had. Good at everything but not really great at anything. Mitchell is a guy that probably should have been an honourable mention given his consecutive Pratt awards and leadership but don’t think he received one nomination or if he did I don’t re-call seeing it. A number of guys got in playing similar amounts or less games..for guys that played four or five seasons Mitchell was one of the better ones for sure.
  14. Glad you watched the HBO documentary- it was a good one. (Is that the one where was it Machine Gun Kelly who punched his a opponent repeatedly all the way across the ice and into the penalty box after a cheap shot against one of his guys?) Don’t put Cooke on your team guys. Still think size doesn’t matter much if you don’t know how to fight - Ohlund, Bertuzzi and some other guys weren’t fighters ... Stan Jonathon, Tie Domi, Williams, Keane, Walker, Rypien, Wendel Clark, Totoo have more then proved that over the years all from different eras. Shultz wouldn’t have much trouble with any of our heavyweights Kocur played at 6’ 200 lbs when he was knocking guys out as big or bigger then Brashear too...Langdon wasn’t big either... anyhow on that point I agree to disagree. O Reilly was tough enough to beat guys later in his career who beat guys in the 90’s who were top enforcers and so on...again not hard to track who could beat who. Today’s game in particular is void of good fighters they almost don’t exist anymore. Skill wise Parent definitely leads the PHI team although for leadership and for two or three years at least Clark was as good as they came too. In his later days against the highs of the 80’s was a perennial Selke candidate. The game is faster that’s for sure. And goalies are bigger and use the butterfly (although Parent did have a career sp higher then most ever - over .920 to join Dryden as the only other goalie from the 70’s to manage that.). Thankfully we have enough toughness that could be added to allow for a safer game. FYI that series wasn’t the beast or animal version of the Flyers - but I’m sure you probably gathered that from the HBO series ... They played a disciplined series for them. Edit: And finally since they have to use the same equipment- have to wonder how 95% of the team we’d ice would play the game without a helmet..let alone a visor.
  15. BPA any fool that looks at your skin colour and has a reaction is their problem and I actually feel a little sorry for them. We are ALL from a foreign country- it’s also what makes our country the best one in the world. I can guarantee that who I associate with would never ever think that way. Don’t forget these little “pockets of hate” as you said are definitely in the minority. I train Mauy Thai, and before Tae-Kwon-Do and before that Karate. Will always be grateful that the masters that came over from Japan, Korea and Thailand have made that possible. We all have much to learn from each other. Small minded people maybe get in the way sometimes. And sometimes small minded people are in positions of power too (Trump). Just remember that for everyone of those guys there are hundreds of others that would be happy to know you.
  16. Absolutely. And I get that it’s a safe place to talk about it with like minded people. It still bugs me a bit that it’s ramping up to overtake the famed “trade Burrows” thread. Yes I’m probably overreacting - but there has been some great topics the past two months and I’m surprised at the lack of participation. For example AJs top 50 Greatest All-Time Canucks ... maybe 50 CDCers contributed on a regular basis... why not participate? Just trying to make a point - it’s a hockey site why don’t we focus a little more on that. Lots we can talk about that has nothing to do with COVID.
  17. WCB is the biggest scam - joke in the government period. Good luck with their kangoroo court system. And god help you of if your ever seriously injured as their policies are designed to make you go broke or wait until their “client” commits suicide. What a crock of sh!t that place is. That said why in the heck would anyone be so worried that they’d do that anyways? Society is so full of lazy idiots I’m way more concerned about that then COVID 19. 19% of the work force expects a raise, promotion or trophy just for doing their job. Baby bombers and gen x can’t do all the work forever. In particular people raised in Victoria and Vancouver are entitled brats for the large part. And that has being going back decades. When I used to hire construction crews rarely were the best people born and raised in the most mainlaind or Victoria - the best workers came from Ontario and Alberta or small town BC. Cry babies the bunch of them. And that was 10-25 years ago now. Maybe it’s better but I doubt it. Probably trolled 75% of this site with that one comment - but seriously isn’t this supposed to be a Canuck site and how many pages are on this thread now? Shame. Make a trade proposal ... participate in the other threads ... COVID 19 isn’t as bad as World War II or the Great Depression
  18. I watched a video of people in Florida doing push ups, squats and crunches with American flags in their teeth outside their gym in protest that it was closed. They weren’t social distancing either. To me that’s Darwin Award worthy despite the pipes on some of these guys and gals (If Laraque who’s training for a marathon and running 5-10 Km a day ends up in the hospital god help the average joe right?)...that said the actual science says there is a .04% chance you will get the disease if are social distancing with a person infected. Seems to me logic dictates that as long as people do that - even if every single person around them is infected - that odds are you will never get it ... as long as you don’t go near 1000 or so infected people .... how many people are currently infected in B.C. ? Not enough to be at all worried that is for certain. As long as you social distance .... you have to eat. Breathatarians (a cult that said you can live off air - water and lemon juicing) died off in the 90’s.
  19. This IS THE VOICE. Ha ha. Given I’ve had to suffer through god knows how many seasons of that - I’m with you bro. Finally something worth voting for.
  20. What I’ve seen on JV is a team that has been extremely patient with a former sixth overall. Management rushed him and maybe it created development issues, maybe it did not. To say he’s beat out BB who came in after proper development and earned and kept his top six spot is kind of ridiculous given throughout his career JVs also had his chances (including at the start) and couldn’t make heads or tails of what to do with it. He’s turned into a valuable player - and just as likely had his breakout last season as he’s likely to get better given he’s right at that age where breakouts occur. Had a good streak this year and bounced BB down to the third line...maybe more of that to come maybe not. His cap hit is going up now and his value will diminish proportional to whatever gains he doesn’t make - the teams not getting the same breaks we were getting cap wise anymore with him. Sure he’s fast. Unfortunately his head doesn’t match the skill set or something (yet). 5 x 5 he’s one of our better players too. If we sign TT our R side should be sorted for years and all three of those guys can move around. Like everyone else I’m hoping he keeps putting it all together - and come playoff time his intangibles shine as well. Not there quite yet.
  21. Maybe our definitions of second pairing defenseman are different. On a good team Edler and Tanev are second pairing guys. Does JV get you one of them at the same age? Doubt it. Pearson was a lot more established then JV, and well we traded guess what - a younger bottom pairing defenseman for him (and yes both needed a change is scenery). I suppose it’s possible we could get a second pairing guy for him. But it doesn’t seem likely - middle six players aren’t hard to acquire (and JV plays up and down the lineup including some time on the top line) heck Bear cleared waivers twice.
  22. Smithers Joe I read a good article while we were doing the top fifty that had Kurtenbach listed as a top nine NYR fighter all-time....pretty much said that players tended to stay away as they didn’t want to drop with him because- well he just didn’t lose. Says a lot given it’s an original six team ... will take your word for it.
  23. This is one of the better solutions available so far. Can’t argue with the reasoning and this would give fans and teams all a fair chance...could make for some interesting upsets which is probably the only downside (for teams and fans of those teams that are already in ..). MIN? Well depends which team shows up for us no matter what ...
  24. Yep. Cloutier‘s seven shutout record gets mentioned for the few years it remained - but Murzyn’s plus 34 / Pratt award season doesn’t ha ha... or that he and Lumme formed the longest serving top pairing of the 90’s Edit: AJ I promise that’s the last I will tease you or anyone else about Murzyn...slow feet I guess kept him off our original list?
