  1. Sour puss ha ha. Depends on what your definition of "impact" means. If playing a regular bottom six role or bottom pairing role doesn't count as impact then I'm sure your right. Tryamkin isn't on the list because he's a pro - we already know he can play a bottom pairing role - and well - will be interesting to see if he's coming back for sure. Aside from him it's a crapshoot as it is for any teams pools. The point is we are still at a good place with ours despite losing sure things QH and EP from it the last couple of years - and have the second highest ranking during the periods they were still prospects. THN/NHL Scouts see two defenseman that can play next year - OJ and Rafferty - and three forwards within two years. Maybe they are a little bullish, even more bullish is JB who sees 7 guys....
  2. Lind has moved up for sure - quietly having a stellar second year ...JB quote in the article "he knew what to expect this year and took the ground running - if he has another strong summmer of training we expect he will be close ". On the rankings - they are an average of 10 NHL scouts. They rank the players first and then arrive at team overall team rankings both on quality and quantity. On Podz: A power winger who has also played center (that's interesting right?) who's averaged just under 9 minutes as an 18 year old in the KHL. World Juniors 2020 helped with his confidence and helped them win a silver medal. Scouts " He's a strong power forward who will go to the walls and to the net". JB " we are happy with his development and have big plans for him ". Also says he will drop the gloves. Hes ahead of guys like Turcotte, Brannstrom, Newhook, Canfield, Tippet, Krebs etc. Of course this years draft doesn't count - but previous ones do and I'm very impressed our 10th overall guy is doing this well against some very good competition.
  3. Another year has almost passed...and QH, EP and BB have graduated from our prospect pool the past several years ... how do we stack up against the rest of the league - even without Madden? Well i got to say I was a little shocked when THN Future Watch arrived at the door today and I flipped through the pages looking for the Canucks and saw what I found - that is we've slipped only one spot to number 4 league wide. For comparison last year our best player was QH, ranked 10 overall (Makar was 4 BTW) and we still had a top three pool (3), and a couple others in the top 100. This year Podz is ranked 9 (wow!) and Hoglander is 27. Madden in LA is ranked 68 but doesn't count for our overall ranking obviously. They actually praised JB a bit saying that our depth is so good we could let Madden go and barely blink - and understandably so given BB and Ferland injuries. The order they had as follows: 1. Podz 2. Hoglander 3. Rafferty (expected in the NHL next year) 4. Lind (almost a PPG AHLer, one more year of development expected) 5. OJ (see Rafferty) 6. MD 7. Woo 8. Rathbone 9. Focht 10. Utunen Got to say I was expecting things to go back a few years and maybe see us around 13. That we've had BB, EP and QH graduate from the pool and still have a big player in the wings in Podz and an almost sure thing in Hogs is very encouraging. For perspective Hogs rating is right around where Demko and BB used to be before making the show... wouldn't that be something if he could come in and have a similar impact.... thoughts? With all that's going around I thought it would be nice to inject some optimism about our future - when JB says he sees 7 future NHLers our pool maybe he should earn our trust given how things have gone the past couple of years...
  4. Soooooo...no playoffs? At least sponge baths are fun - not terribly worried about whomever this is. My parents and in laws - yep worried about them. Stay safe and if you need a nurse call these ones...
  5. JVs had his chances in the past and aside from a 14 or so games this year (that's called a streak) hasn't always made the best of them. He's a very useful player regardless - and there's still potential. Next year a lot could happen - whether we sign TT or not. Leivo is a cheap option still too if JB decides to invest somewhere else in the lineup.
  6. There has been some interest in trying Podz at center - that would be something if he did. TT sample size is way too small to consider him a slam dunk on the top line - he also has lots of experience playing with Pearson. I agree we should try and sign him but 6 seems too high. Recent history has shown a lot of decent - good players fall off a cliff after signing their big money deals. Okposo was a PPG future star in NY, way more impressive resume then TT, then you have guys like Ladd, Foligno, Neal, LE, Lucic - the list is quite long. Maybe a team would overpay him and give him a similar deal that LE got - and yes players keep getting more - but to me 5 or maybe 5.5 will still probably end up an overpayment - fair at best. Podz won't be here for another season. A lot could happen between then and now and it's doubtful he will come in and have a Calder worthy season like BB, EP and QH have had. He will start in the bottom six and have work his way up. Maybe JV's still here, maybe not, one of these guys could definitely play on their off wing though if need be, and you know injuries will occur. Would be a killer R wing set up and all but bump LE out. I don't think the team would have a hard time signing both guys. Especially if Ferland is done. Like to see what BB can manage with a full season at 100%, his back injury and recovery was brutal - this guy has been through a lot (Dad) and still all smiles - can't help but root for him. No reason we can't keep both cap wise - a few tweaks. Sure would be nice if the season resumes and we can get a larger sample size before these decisions have to be made. We certainly can't afford another LE garbage contract. Not saying TT will be bad - even said he's likely to get over 50 points playing in our top six (when 40 is around hisn career average) but no way I'd pick him over Boeser - too much potential and he's a core player worth building around. I agree it would be a waste if we don't re-sign him - but it would be even worse if we overpaid him, traded BB for a serviceable second pairing guy that we could get for free instead of signing TT...there's a trade off there I don't like. End up making the team older. Anyhow good thoughts. I like TT and agree we should sign him. Could stomach 5.5x5 but that's a lot to pay for a career middle six guy on a decent team, which is exactly what he is. BB was fourth in R wing scoring when he went down and is having his worst season yet (and understandably so given the distractions).
  7. Leivo walks - there's 1.5. Ferland likely won't be back - that's close to 5 million right there. Trade Bear as a one year modest cap dump - for a second or prospect that's enough for Markstrom raise and a little more for TT. As far as BB next qualifying offer he has two more years to earn that and don't see why he won't. He's only going to get stronger and better - PLUS even if this is his peak it's good enough for top five for position as it is and he will earn his next contract. Anyone who thinks TT is going to stay at last years level is dreaming. Four times he's managed 40 points or more in his career. Playing in our top six should keep him over 50 for a while ... which is fine for 5 x 5 maybe. Our defense will have to rely around QH and someone else in the system taking the next step - and maybe a UFA to boost it. Trading BB when he's 25 likely could give us something a lot better too - if Podz - big if - can come in and beat him out THEN we should pull the trigger. Otherwise we could be risking trading a 35/35 Tarasenko type before he's proven - and the return would be much smaller.
  8. IF this were true then we have no business overpaying for TT given the age comparison and should keep BB. Plus we have no idea yet what JB has up has sleeve, a few modest cap dumps and Bear, Sutter or whomever can be shed (im opposed to this BTW but depending on what we give up could stomach it depending on both TT and Markstroms contracts) and we can afford both R winders in our top six. As for Podz, well he's another season away - then he's on his ELC so yes we can afford all three. Difficult decisions later for sure but by then maybe BB is a star and could get us a much better player. Or the caps gone up and everything is ok. LEs contract will be split up, Pearson will likely be let go as well to pay for QH and EP - spooner and Luongo will be off the books eventually and yes we can have good things again. Our cap isn't that bad - we just need to shed some vets. Trading BB would be a mistake at this point. JV isn't going to replace him, he's the player he is going to mostly be by now...nothing wrong with that he's like injury insurance and is a solid bottom six player. Oh and Leivo walks.
  9. Doubt the cap is going up .... And that we keep the exact team together even if we treat TT as a rental. The hard part is going to be should we cap dump and further deplete our prospect pool /future picks ... we also have QH and EP coming up and need to save for them....or just take our medicine and let this roster shed its vets ...? Tough call. I doubt TT takes less then 5, same with Markstrom..but you never know..
  10. Agreed. If there are no playoffs- then every team that can argue that there were ...well - no playoffs. I guess it could go the other way too...but from a legal standpoint you could pick it apart pretty easily. I don't think the Canucks should keep the pick anyways - too much uncertainty with next year with the contracts that are up and I'm not convinced we will ice a better team. JB has a lot of work to do and some hard decisions ahead Considering how long it took China to get a handle on this, and that the US seems to have missed the ball somewhat, a couple of months seems the best case scenario. Guess we will have to wait and see.
  11. Anyone on this site who's got borrowing power and a big sack, or money available not tied up should be buying as much as possible right now. You might not hit the low - maybe that's in a month or two - but things are tanking fast. Part of that is because smart investors are getting out with what they can and ready to re-invest as it drops further which it will. Trying to hit the bottom is tough. For the rest of us don't dispair. You don't lose the money unless you sell off. If you don't have the stomach for it, just wait , it will bounce back. Thankfully my wife has big balls so she's taking care of it ha ha.
  12. I agree with the defensive coach needs a change... but I don't a new PP coach will happen - sure it's frustrating to watch five great passes and a few missed shot opportunities with regularity - however we still have one of the best PPs in the entire league - with lesser players to work with then at least a half dozen teams to boot. It's factually probably overachieving a bit. On Green and the season. If the US and Canada continue to take the steps they are right now the pandemic will run its course like it did in China an so peter out in 4-6 weeks. That's an acceptable amount of time to finish the season on a condensed schedule (all 82 games) and have a regular playoff format. Would just have to push the next season off 3 weeks or so ... That time will likely give most teams a chance to get healthy as well (McKinnon and Markstrom for example). Hope it happens. All team staff are self isolating right now - the risk of them getting it is extremely small. TG deserves a chance to finish the season - as does all the NHL players...
  13. Really this comes down to if the US and Canada are willing to go to the ends China has with their cases. Quarantine, isolation, jailing those that don't obey etc. They managed to get a handle in it within their borders and they are the most densely populated in the world (well pretty much). Their timeline was two months however you have to consider it took a few weeks to get a handle on how to treat and slow the spread. Isolation, social distancing and all the rest still won't guarantee this virus won't keep coming back as you just know not some infected people will fall through the cracks. I'd say their is a possibility playoffs happen but the odds aren't good. Even if business goes back as usual - will fans flock to the game with the virus still kicking around? Guess we will find out all these things eventually...
  14. The fair thing would be to play out the season. It's not fair to any of the teams to call it at this point and go to the tie breakers...still lots of hockey left in even say a 78 game season.
  15. Ted Lindsay/Pearson : QH Hart : Markstrom (Miller close) Art Ross : Miller Norris : QH Messier Leadership : Miller (ha ha) OK let's do it like the THN. Probert Award (best fighter) : McEwen Langway Award (best defensive defenseman) : Tanev Orr Award ( best defenseman) : Q Hughes Gretzky Award (MVP) : Markstrom Roy Award (best goalie) : Markstrom Lemuiex Award (most talented player) Q Hughes Ferguson Award (toughest player) : Tanev Beliveau Award (best leader) : Miller Bob Gainey Award (best defensive forward) : Horvat
  16. Didn't see this coming even though the signs were there (coronavirus).. Fuc!!! A duck. Was looking forward to watching our guys make the playoffs legitimately. With our division so tight can't see how any team that gets boned being very happy about this. If I was the league I'd let the teams play tonight just to give the Canucks one more game as the West is a total horse race. Or create something to make it a little more fair (make the teams close to each other play one game each together?!!) Calgary fans would be livid with the tie breaker. OR we will be livid if the league says the season is over therefore the first tiebreaker doesn't count. To make it fair I'd make CAL and VAN play one game - the winner goes in the loser plays golf. On that front it's very likely there will be no playoffs this year. Fans won't flock to arena's anytime soon. This is also about money and no way the league just plays games with no fans long term. Although our fans are crazy nuts and would still pack arenas that didn't have a rule against fans going. Maybe then league can shuffle things up and say if a team like CLB (where fans cant go to home games) are in they circumvent it by playing in a non-playoffs teams arena close by? Ugh that's stupid but it's still better then no fans at all. Back to the money - the cap isn't going up. Might even go down. Frack fuc! Sh!t crap. LE memes and hate won't stop anytime soon. Had circled the next four days on the proverbial calendar - the CDC is heating up just like the team. BB is back !! Markstrom is skating!!! Now. Whimper. Its so sudden...at least with a lock out fans can expect this outcome. Ok. On the bright side - has QH done enough to win the Calder? I think he definitely has. Makar has been out twice..and has faded where as QH competitive spirit and "huggy bear" body has just got better and better - and proven durable (in your face doubters!).. Miller. Leadership. Co-MVP in my mind. Demko. A solid back-up who had played some damn good hockey for us with Markstrom out. .925, .923 .918, .909 x 2 and two just below .900. How's Bobrovsky done this year ha ha Horvat/Pearson/LE. Facing McKinnon, McDavid/Draisatl and the leagues best night in night out and kept the score mostly on par - often plus players. Can't ask for more. Markstrom. Enough said. Green? Well no Babcock yet ha ha.
  17. Not to mention with states already putting a cap on public gathering the teams won't make any money - in fact will just hemorrhage it. And fans will stay away on purpose too as this worsens. The silly part is most of us are going to get it eventually, this is only just going to slow it down. Hopes are in the summer it will Peter out - but highly unlikely it just won't come back and keep on it's way through the human race. Only our own anti-bodies or a vaccine will keep it from us, and one is 18 months away best case scenario, the other - well you have to get it and beat it to work. Maybe these measures will be enough to hold it off - but not according to the experts. Confirmed cases going up 50-100% lately and that should slow down with people's awareness but it won't stop it. I guess hockey players have the resources to stay away from the world while it does this ... but doubt some of them won't end up getting it before a vaccine is available. The long view is they might be no hockey next year too, or another canceled season - that's what the math says anyways.
  18. The poster your referring too says TT is a 30 goal scorer who is better then BB and will score 68-74 points for us. Well he didn't do it yet so why will he after he signs his grandkids never have to work deal? Yes he's a good hockey player. So was LE and that actually WAS his norm during his best years in Dallas and Boston. He's scored over 40 points four times in his career with a high water mark of 58. Hmmm. Trade BB indeed.
  19. Yeah me too (on the one or hopefully three month "hometown discount". But I think Hayes was a terrible signing, same with Duchene, same with Skinner and I hope JB doesn't bother if that's the cost.
  20. Your response was a lot nicer then mine although I was thinking most of the same things. Except I don't think TT is in the same position Hayes was (big two-way second line center who gets his 50 points) or even Krieder (speedster who gets his goals). Both these guys were very overpaid, not really the norm for UFAs. Absolutely agree with AP though. A defenseman like that in his prime often have their best seasons in their 30-33 range...St Louis might get a discount but nobody else will. 9 x 7 might do it, but he will probably get 8 x 8 and stay.
  21. AP is not taking less then he's currently making. Maybe the same to stay where he is and 8 years - but to pry him out of St Louis we'd have to be the highest bidder and no thanks to that. Some of the other ideas are ok - but don't forget we need to re-sign EP and QH the following year and even a bridge won't come cheap...we simply can't afford to go all in with term until those two are signed as well. MAYBE we can re-sign TT around 5 x 5...anymore and we will almost certainly regret it..even odds even that will become an anchor (see Neal and a dozen others). Don't be fooled by this year - he's not going to all of a sudden be a PPGer, he will absolutely go back to his career norm over the duration of his next contact and that's the best case scenario. The moment he signs there is no more carrot or motivation - it happens year after year with decent level players or low level stars even - they rarely keep it up (forwards in particular). Why should we expect anything different? Okposo's UFA year he was a PPGer and posted much more promising stats before that then TT. Neal recently, Ryan a long time ago now, Ladd, Foligno, LE, Lucic, Backes etc and these were much bigger names then TT. If I was JB I'd offer him 5x5 as the high bar take it or leave it. If someone wants to give him a JVR (at the time) or Hayes like contract so be it - let them take the hit of an extra roster player. Much rather bridge JV again at a 3 x 3 - and take my chances if we can only keep one, wouldn't you? Edit: the cap isn't going up if more teams follow SJ and don't allow fans in the buildings. It's an easy excuse - and will definitely be used.
  22. Maybe, maybe not. Markstrom was when he was drafted considered a sure thing and for several years after ranked at or near the top for goalie prospects. Maybe his size and the fact back then big goalies were the new next thing in goaltending (Rinne and Bishop) had something to do with it, and that it hid some of his flaws at the next level (it's hard to score when half the net is covered up with goalie and equipment). The truth is Demko is definitely ahead of Markstrom at the same age, and well he has size advantage too (I've met him and he's a tall guy, no exaggeration there, taller then Luongo). Out out seven games he's posted two just below .900, two at .909, plus .918 (win), .923 (loss) and .925 (win). That's not too shabby. Markstrom is peaking and it would be foolish to go with an unknown at this time, but I wouldn't mind either way (both have their advantages). Just thankful we've got two capable guys ... we definitely need strong goaltending as the team matures.
  23. We trade for TT and visions of Parayko appear on some fans horizon. Yeah we should give up on a guy that scored at a 40 goal pace as a rookie as was the Calder runner up. Maybe St Louis should give up on theirs too. Boeser will be fine - not much different then Tarasenko once he finds his grove and stays healthy - a game changer and streaky. He's part of our young core and a weapon at that. A few more off seasons and some man strength will change everything for him. Wouldn't at all surprise me if he gets 50 in his prime. Even a reduced BB was fourth in scoring league wide when he went down for R wingers. Perhaps Neal would be better? Ha ha. Unless the return was a treasure trove (like the Butcher deal for Mommesso - Ronning - Courtnal) forget about it and it should'nt be done. Cool with adding TT, but not if it means BB is going somewhere else, and not if he's paid more then Miller. He hasn't earned that.
