McDavid and the last quarter century
IBatch replied to Baratheon's topic in General Hockey Discussion
60 goals ... quite the achievement! Is 70 doable? Yes I think he will score at least 70 this year ... that puts him in some elite company. Only 8 players have done it ... two fringe HHOFers in Mogilny (should be in for sure) and Nicholls. Only Mario, Wayne and Brett Hull did that more than once. Two more seasons for sure with Draisatl... McJesus legacy is already great ... sure would be nice to see him rattle off a couple more. By the time he's done, likely moving into one of the top 20 most productive seasons ever. If he can get to 156, the only guys ahead of him (13 combined seasons) are Mario and Gretzky. That's very special. -
Thanks EP. Think you're right with EDM. When McDavid signed he took around the same money Crosby did cap percentage wise, difference is - the cap didn't go up and that has made it tougher on EDM even though both guys could of asked for the max. Next deal(s) could see the band breaking up. Datsyuk is a good comp, even his first couple years some folks said that's where EP could be headed. Also thing this will be Bergerons's last kick at the can ... not sure he will win, but a finalist for sure. He's been thinking about retiring since last summer. Maybe they just miss and he comes back for one more season like Borque did. Pretty sure it will be either this summer or the following one he retires. If they win the cup probably this summer.

End of an era for sure. Glad Friedman said something. He cut his teeth in our circuit during the WCE era, and has pretty intimate knowledge/connection to those days (EF). As for Garret, if there ever was a reason to put a colour commentator in the HHOF, sure would love to see him get that honour. Only guy on the planet that i could see filling those shoes is KB. Make it happen!

[Poll] With Horvat gone, who should be named the Canucks next captain?
IBatch replied to Roberts's topic in Canucks Talk
Don't think the team would really be rushing things if they named a Captain at some point next season. But wouldn't do it in the off season. And would like to see them start the year and keep up a solid pace first at the very least. Miler, QHs, EP for sure are the front runners. -
If EK can somehow keep it up, on a SJ team that really doesn't have much at all right now ... he could be the first D to break 1000 points in a very long time. That's an incredible feat really. Burns would have to play until he's 40-41 at his current pace to manage the same. Five years younger ... and catching up lol. Just goes to show how rare these guys really are. Highly doubt either Makar or QHs will end up top 10-11 in scoring, 4 times. Potvin, Coffey and Orr - Karlsson ... that's some pretty good company. Could be the first D since Lidstrom to win a Norris as a minus player.
-
Yes it's not a good move.
-
If he's healthy, he's not going to disappoint. Pretty sure he remains a Shark until Grier becomes more realistic with his ask.
-
Only way this works would be if we buy out OEL and the cap goes up a lot. EK is having a resurgence. Can say, when the guys on, and he's on right now, he's one of the best if not the best player in the planet. If Cooke didn't sever his achilles tendon, i'd bet he'd have another 2-3 Norris trophies. He's that good when on. There was a time, not too long ago, that EK was being discussed as just as impactful to his team, as Crosby and Ovi are to theirs. As in a generational talent. Now on a bad team, he's showing he's still got game. And also showing QHs and Makar what sort of bar they need to achieve to also get the same mantle.

Yes he had a bad start. Turning it around now. Personally would be happy not to see anyone get the C before at least December of next season. -

Good with the media is a big part of that job, and it's exactly one of the things EP pointed out during the all-star game interview. He's considering the possibility, but media came up as one of the factors for him taking that role. I'd rather QHs take it on. Or Miller. At least for now. Why screw with his trajectory? Luongo was a big whiff. Let's not do that again. -
Good list. Crosby just was voted as the leagues best all around player, by the NHLPA, for the fourth year in a row and it wasn't even close. Bergeron was second. I think if we spent more time watching those guys we'd probably think even higher if them. Crosby isn't killing penalties (smart to manage his minutes) as much as he used too, but his 5 x 5 play speaks for itself. Same with Bergeron. Of those three, EP has entered that conversation, for about one year now. Those guys have been doing it forever, but it sure is starting to look like EP could take over. Kuzmemko is a good wingman. 120 points would be incredible. Last year Mathews won the Hart and it's fair to say he earned it. Having a top 3 or even 5 center in the entire league is something we've only had one other time, for about 3 years. My brother and I think he could rattle off 5-8 consecutive 100 point seasons as long as he stays healthy. IF we sign him for 8 seasons, he plays all of them with us, it possible he ends up with all the major Canuck records. As for QHs ... he's special too. The stick that stirs the drink. Miller deserves some credit too.
-
You bet. I voted EP too. He is special. So is QHs. Given what they've accomplished at their age so far on some bad/mediocre teams - it's fair to say only Bure did as much. It's also why I don't have any issue with the direction the club is taking. Want to see some 40-50 goal seasons first for EP before I get the superstar handle out though. And a few in the bag (this year is one!). For sure he's a star, and one of the better ones at that. He needs to be better than most or all the other stars for his position at least first. Miller is feasting on the PP. But showing he's a star still too, and for sure earned every single penny of his next deal.
-
He's special. Hope this is just the start. Again a super star is a star that is above his peer group. Pure definition. Hers the even strength this year so far - up until two weeks ago, EK led this field. As a defenseman. Only centers. It can't just be one year. Right now McDavid is a superstar. That much is undeniable. EK is also showing the league his ankle is finally ok too. Already robbed of one Norris. Sundin was never a superstar. Same with Francis.
-
By pure definition, there can only be 2-3 superstars in the league at any given time. If you want to add each position, then maybe 7. Superstars should be regularly considered for first and second team all-star spots. And win some hardware. So far EP's sneaking up into that area, but he's got stiff competition.
-
I voted EP. But agree with Deb it's awfully tough. As for who should get the C, Hughes should, that is if Miller isn't picked.

Weren't there a lot of folks with CAL envy just a short while ago? Like Bedard envy. It won't settle until it does. And maybe we can get him as a free agent one day, just hope he's a lot better then Messier was. -

We at least matched the Leafs though ... it was probably my favourite game of the season... -
Top 10 Overpaid Wingers in the NHL in 2022-23
IBatch replied to Drive-By Body Pierce's topic in General Hockey Discussion
It was meant to be silly. Point is exactly this - Garlands a meh level contract. Not great not terrible - last year was good value. Brocks - well he's close to the top but not as bad as others. Kuzemnko for me is core right now. And right now he's for sure one of the best contracts in the league. Next year both Miller and Kuzmo start to get paid closer to what they are worth. Just was happy not to see Garland or Brock's name. The way some folks are complaining about it you'd think they'd be near the top! -

11 Garland, 12 Brock, 13, Kuzmenko - because you know next contract he will want 50 million x 8. -
Moving our 2023-1st at the draft (Proposal)
IBatch replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Not sure if this is on the table. But maybe the ghost of JB is still haunting the office, and we try yet again to clear cap and plug holes...OEL/Garland sure didn't work out as planned. Edit: Who knows maybe this one works like Miller did though...If they can trade some players, and plug the final spots (3C and top four D) ... team could turn things around quickly. -

Remember all the good start with the Sedins long in the tooth? Then Edler and or Tanev went down, and any playoff hopes went with it. That was more of a pattern than winning a bunch the last third of the season. One thing that did happen, was instead of losing 3 or four games right at the end, we lost a spot by winning a game or two more then the teams around us. Maybe that's what you're remembering. In the end, the lotto rules boned us anyways. And it's doubtful it would mean much as far as whom we picked. Nobody wanted OJ at six either. Or EP at six.
