  1. I would definitely do that . But so would 31 other GMs if they could cherry pick two underperformed off their roster and make it work. Like OTT Ryan plus whomever. Or Buffalo Okposo plus...
  2. Absolutely my faves are Prust, Vey and LE....they should also all be annointed knights of Benning empire and held up as the best of good tries....maybe even statues should be made with Benning too depicting a scene of when he signed them desk and all. The plaque can read “During the Holy re-Tool phase, we held these guys at the highest praise”...also include WD’s mustachios on the plaque..
  3. Fixed it for you. Whether it’s in Utica, Sweden or on the team, there is no getting around it, we will be stuck with him and his cap hit for three more years. Hes still a decent two-way player and one of the best PKers in the entire league, plus he’s one of our best injuries option if our top six needs a replacement. Like it or not (not) we will be stuck with him or even worse Lucic (even longer and we’d have to protect him too when Seattle comes in) or maybe Ryan etc which might be better for us but marginally so (one less year I think). Virtually buy-out proof right until he’s done. Might as well accept it and move on. Our cap situation isn’t that dire (yet at least), we will still be competitive during that time and in three years the best version of this core will start showing itself, more cap space and Podz and guys all various stages of their primes ... that money and Luongos will be needed to re-up Horvat and possibly Miller too....plus other ELCs that will be burned off etc..
  4. As for the OP maybe Benning will try and trade one of two guys after training camp and he has a better idea of how the lines will look and who’s outside looking in. Could see Goldobin and Bear on their ways out, not sure what he could get from Goldie but Bear would get us a 4th at worst. AG will start in Utica just to make room, but also to develop more and be ready for when Sutter goes down. He could end up on the wing too as Miller could end up as the guy that plays that role until he’s better prepared for it. Schaller will get waived, nobodies picked him up. Depending on how the season goes hopefully Beagle, Sutter and Bear are all healthy and we can get something better for one of them a next years TDL for one of them. Hard to say really, Beagle has a great year he’s a possibility. Two more years might scare teams away though. Sutter will be much easier to trade if he’s healthy too, one more year is definitely palatable. Best case maybe a 2nd, likely a 3rd and possible retention. We do have a glut of forwards...Rousell also is a possible trade at the deadline...if he plays great once he’s back. I think we will be better positioned the following year to make some trades with the support vets we have, what we get entirely depends on how well they do. Figure next season if we are in it we won’t do anything.
  5. At this point Benning should be looking for absolutely anything he can get for Goldie. Most likely he will end up waived anyways, no way is he getting a top six job, maybe they can try and make a third scoring line with him and JV but I don’t see that working well with Sutter as their center and LE is much better suited as a two-way players anyways. Time to move on, even a 6th rounder is better then nothing.
  6. In two years the Canucks will have 25-27 million. Factually after Myers contract ALL our players are done in four years or less. Plenty of money to sign Hughes and EP, and either re-sign Edler and Tanev for less money OR even better use OJ and Woo as replacements (assuming they are ready). I don’t have the “sky is falling” mentality when it comes to our future cap issues, they will all sort themselves out organically in three more years and in a way JB has a 7 million dollar reserve (figure LE is worth 3) which will only help him learn to work with less over that time and become a better cap manager which he already had shown with his recent UFA signings. Benn is on one of the best deals this summer, Myers and Edler fair or even team friendly ones, and Millers fits within his cap structure too. As long as he doesn’t do something stupid before then we should be in great shape when LEs contract is done. It’s untradeable, well let’s just say the cost is way way too high given what Marleau got and we’d be getting Lucic or Ryan type back so what’s the point (he’s said this last Monday too, that the only way a trade will work is with a different guy on a similar contract who is also looking for a change of scenery). LEs best chance at a trade is working his tail off to increase his value. Don’t see him doing that, but he could end up on the third line and scoring 35ish points. His chances of a top six role are very small now. Long term a few of Woo, Madden, Brisebois, OJ, this year second maybe Lind etc will trickle into the lineup and replace the Beagles and Rousells and Tanev and Edlers. Whatever holes are left will be filled with free agency. LE doesn’t have to be moved to make it work, and also think the quality of the team will only be affected if none of these guys make it which seems unlikely. Edit: LE is also one of the leagues best PKers...might as well use him, he also adds depth...and injuries could mean he does get another shot at a top six role.
  7. Nice to have some options...but it’s not like when Shanny and Yzerman went out and had their minute and then Hull and Robataille went out and had their turn in 2002 ha ha. Would like to see what Hughes can do too but doubt he will start on the first PP unit...Myers big upgrade on the right side though and sure him and Hughes will eventually end up together. EP-Horvat-Boeser. Pearson-JT-Ferland OR interchange Horvat and J.T.
  8. NO. Subban is overrated and wouldn’t surprise me if one of Hughes, Myers or even Edler outscore him. In NSH he was used against a much lower level of competition then Weber sees in MTL (the best) and could still barely manage 40 points. Much rather have Benn and Myers, who are at least as good defensively. At that price he should be doing it all and still be a Norris quality guy (which I don’t ever think he was, he robbed EK of a Norris)....Josi was their top guy. Maybe he has a bounce back year but I think he won’t and NJ will come to regret this move.
  9. We actually DO have a top line, for the first time in a while. As in a first line. Sure EDM and CAL were better last year, that’s why I said we have a top nine that is as good as any in our division not a top LINE. And we all saw how great both CALs small line did and TBs too for that matter come playoff time (although I’m not so sure about them, bad luck?) FYI there were six guys last year that scored 100 points, the most in quite some time and two were from our division, both in EDM. Who was worse then us and hasn’t done squat this off season to make their team better. Five of the top 30 were also in our division which isn’t very many overall. Yes I definitely think we can compete with these guys, we have a glut of middle six players that could easily have 20 plus goals given some PP or top six duties, Pearson, Ferland, JV, Rousell (well at least be on pace for 20), Bear and maybe even LE etc...last year Rousell scored at a higher rate 5 x 5 per 60 minutes then Boeser did. Horvat will also have two decent options for an entire season now, which makes me happy for him. When LE and Beagle are your fourth line your doing ok..statiscally LE was one of the best PKers in the entire league last year (advanced stats)...read a nice article on it yesterday, so your earlier comments about that make me chuckle too (was it we had one of the worst fourth lines, something like that anyway, most expensive no doubt). Someone else pointed out St Louis and how many points their guys got so I won’t go there but again, our top nine looks be one of the best in our division this year, we certainly have the guns for it. edit: SJ lost two of their top producers this off season...CAL and Vegas top nines will probably be better then ours, unless EP catches fire and produces at the 1.3 PPG he did until Jan last year. I’m expecting both him and Boeser to have over 70 if they play a full season. The sky’s the limit for them. Horvat could too depending on PP time and if he remains on the first unit. Having a more balanced defense will help with this, a full year of Hughes, and Myers too to a certain degree will give the entire offense a boost. Maybe I’m more bullish then some when it comes to this but I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well things turn out. There is a big difference in the quality of players we brought in this time, gritty vets are one thing (whom are also placeholders in a way until the some of the second tiered support players start trickling in) Swiss Army knife guys Ferland, Pearson and Miller are another level.
  10. Absolutely. Yes. Because that team was systematically dismantled by the same guy we just signed. The 2009-2014 was great, but it didn’t have enough toughness when it mattered. Beiksa was the only that really pushed back it it wasn’t enough. Love the guy he had heart in spades and spades. Dorsett too later on. In 2011 Beiksa drove Eager mad and he’s a big part of the reason we got by SJ. But Ferland hit the crap out of us in 2014 and yes I believe with Miller and Horvat we are a better then that team, even if we don’t get as many points in the regular season (think we were 7th overall then). Our middle six is much better as is our second line. We would pick apart that team in a head to head series I’m sure.
  11. If TB beat Boston we’d have picked them apart in five games. Also if Maholrta was healthy it would have been a different series against Boston. I 100% agree that it’s the quality of the support players that make a difference and this team has it in spades. Anything can happen in the next couple of years, you never know. I bet not many people know that Rousell was better then Boeser 5 x 5 x 60 minutes of play. We also have JV, LE who statistically was one of the very best PKers in the league .... our middle six is on the precipice of exploding and that includes Ferland and Miller. One or two of these guys will make a difference both in the regular season and the playoffs
  12. Yep....and I can say this much, Orcas love Salmon, so maybe if they take that name at the very least we can munch on them for a long, long time. No way they come out with as much as Vegas did. GMs have wised up and will just let the Sbisa, Gaunces of the worlds go without any extras...
  13. Bo was playing with garbage much of the year ... arguably our best player. This year with a season of Pearson and one of our they promising middle six players (Rousell maybe when he’s back, best 5 x 5 scorer on the team after EP) Good times ahead, can’t wait to see what he can do with a healthy Sutter and Beagle behind him
  14. Quin is rolling over in his grave considering without him adamantly refusing to re-name the Canucks the Orcas we’d have being rebranded as such years ago and possibly be in Seattle. Personally I think it’s in poor taste to call us that, maybe for some it isn’t. We are Canucks.
  15. Your hilarious. I said we had one of the best top nines, and as in top three lines in the division...but whatever applesauce keep spreading your dislike for the team. How many guys in our division scored 100 points last year again .... ? Can’t have a good line first line without them? And the league for that matter..three was it, out of 24 players...Personally I think the EP we saw at the beginning is closer to the one we will get then the one who we saw the last couple months. That guy is a 100 point player, maybe not next year but sometime soon. Maybe go cheer for the Oilers they had two. There’s more then points when tabulating a teams players, although it’s important. Don’t think we are going to have much of any problems from ours, when you have enough to start making three scoring lines your fourth line ends up pretty good too BTW. Beagle is a very good 4th line Center, and where’s LE going to end up? Fourth line now? Two guys get bumped out of last years top six, it’s going to trickle down right out of the lineup, and last year Bear hardly played (doesn’t mean he will for long, but if he does that’s like three guys we didn’t have last year).
  16. Ryan Ellis has a pretty great shot for a little guy, a better goal scorer then Keith, even in junior he was racking them up. Don’t think Hughes has the same one but it would sure be nice to be wrong. Size wise they are similar ... but heck you never know how many goals did Ghost get a couple years ago too? Don’t know what he’s worked on since the summer started but sure hope it is his point shot.
  17. That’s understandable. Every team that is spending to the cap has different issues. Look Detroit’s rebuild over the past five years, they’ve been bumping the cap all along and really don’t have much to show for it. A few of their ok guys from earlier or there the first part of their rebuild are already gone in Nyqvist and Tatar. They were also like us, a top team for years that traded away futures for a shot at a cup (at least they won though). No cap team doesnt have their issues. For us I think maybe your catastrophizing things a bit with Boeser, on Monday Benning said they have more then enough for him, and we have close to 30 million off the books when EP and Hughes are due (and of course a lot of other guys to sign as well, but a lot to let go finally as well). Anywyas enjoy the team we’ve got, I think you will find there is more to cheer for then your expecting.. edit: agreed on the forced and created internal 9 million internal cap issue for three years...could be 8 if LE goes to Utica...and it could bring good habits too playing with 10% less then most other cap teams
  18. Agreed. Unless Markstrom reverts and Demko can’t handle the workload we should be on the other side of that often. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if at the end of the year some of our guys including the coach will be nominees for some hardware as a result either.
  19. One thing that I will enjoy the most win or lose, is this team is no longer going to be pushed around. In fact against some teams we may even the bullies a bit. Look forward to Tree coming back. Him and Myers would be the twin towers ha ha. Benn, Myers, Miller, Edler, Ferland...that’s a lot of size signed. A very, very different team then the one we had to start the season two years ago.
  20. Well said 189lbs. I’ve been on team tank too, and maybe had a bit more cynical outlook from the beginning then some that we ever had a chance no matter whom took over the job. Expectations were low for a variety of reasons, mostly because we had absolutely nobody coming up or to replace the old core, and that we were handcuffed to pull off a Linden deal like last time things looked so dreadful (Keenan era). Somehow its come together better then those expectations. Not 100% sold on going all in yet, but it is what it is and I have a roster that I’m happiest to cheer for in a very long time. Look forward to watching these kids grow, and same with the veterans
  21. If everyone is injured as often as they were the last few years, which I fully expect, the difference is this year we have the depth to support it. Then add Miller, Myers, Benn, Ferland and subtract all the guys they replaced. This team is nothing like the one we iced last year, bigger, tougher, more skilled and deeper. Yes it’s possible they miss the playoffs, if they do it won’t be by much...the best version is still three years out. We have one of the best top nines in the division now, and one of the best bottom six too. And a much better defense then we iced last year too...
  22. Glad you have come around, always enjoy your posts and have similar taste in players....was it perfectly done? Not even close...accidentally or on purpose somehow Benning has done it. Seems to be learning on the job and the big mistakes have become big learning lessons. Glad he went after bigger bodies and guys that can do a little of everything. Watched a video on what Ferland did to us recently ... if he can bring that on a regular basis come playoff time it will be awesome
  23. In a few years if everything works out we could have OJ, Woo and Tree in the lineup, Edler and Tanev out. Hard to predict exactly how things will go but with those three plus Myers and Hughes we should be very solid at least, and only get better. I think this team could surprise...definitely the most improved over any other team in our division and much, much harder to play against. Ferland, Miller, JV, Myers and Horvat are better suited for the playoffs IMO the. the regular season ones given their games (Myers has 8 points and 4 goals in 16 games two years ago as a third stringer) and it wouldn’t surprise me if Boeser will be too. Third and maybe even second place isn’t out of the question this year...and the best thing is the team three years from now will be he start of the best version of this team. Benning probably just saved his job, and I haven been this excited for the team since Luongo was traded for Bertuzzi. The start of the season couldn’t come sooner, Boeser is close to signing now and Benning on Monday talked to LE and during that conversation to the press later said with a Rousell going to long term we don’t have any cap issues now and won’t when he returns either. He’s actively looking for a solution that works for the team and LE but warned any trade would involve a similar player coming back and that LE is still considered useful to the team and part of it (for now). Post Sedin plus two is starting, and like last season it looks like the team is going to take huge steps. Most had us DFL or right after OTT .... not so sure they will make the same mistake this year when the final predictions come out.
  24. For those that haven’t read the article NHL.com reports LE and Benning finally talked, two months after the remarks were made. Both sides are looking for a solution which could include a trade, but it would have to be for another player on a bad contract coming back the other way so the OPs and several other equally lopsided deals just won’t be happening. They have/are looking at every team to see what could be done...Benning also said he thinks he’s got value for us as a two-way forward and PKer etc (which of course he’s going to say), I also don’t think he’d take on a worse contract given our cap space is tight so 6 million cap hit is about or less would have to be coming back, or take on a contract with longer term. As it sits now he’s buried even further in the depth chart so don’t see how LE is going to get out of this without playing the best hockey he has since coming here. Really don’t think they will find any takers ... it’s possible (Lucic is the most realistic proposal so far, but we’d be getting the worse contract and the worse player other then tougher).
