One thing I’ve discussed with my brother right from the start of Horvats career is the very real possibility that we will never see him on a Canucks team that will come close to competing for the cup, simply from the viewpoint that a top team (contender) rarely is able to gain much traction with its next core, largely because they don’t have the luxury of a decent prospect pool to start and our only other chips (our players) didn’t give us nearly enough to give us a boost this time round. Linden gave us parts of the WCE, Luongo and a Sedin. Bure Jovo, Mogilny Morrison and ... Stajanov Naslun ha ha made up for Neely. Still it was two cores before we made it back to the final. This one has given us Horvat and maybe Hutton who will be around for the prime EP/Boeser years. It’s something, but no Bertuzzi, Sedin,Luongo, Markstrom, Morrison and Jovo that the 94 team gave (and those are only the important pieces, also McCabe, McKult and a bunch of other names too). Detroit is the only team i can recall going two cores in a row and winning cups, or even two cores of contention...if EK signs you could say SJ has probably managed the latter (but Thornton early days never came with a final appearance, although they were considered a contender for a few of those years). For those fans that know nothing but the Sedin era, or even the WCE era and forward they are used to a lot of winning, and some losing but not really that much (yet), if Benning pulls this off it’s a minor miracle. Horvat could be gone as a UFA before we’ve had enough bad years to re-boot the team, best case scenario is we add a very good- awesome piece each year from previous drafts (Boeser-EP-Hughes-?-?) and get enough out of the later rounds to keep us going once we make the playoffs, maybe do some damage 2021-24. History shows it’s not easy to do (two cores in a row contending) otherwise the nineties oilers would have killed it after the bounty of picks and prospects they got from dismantling and selling off their players etc. I’m not without hope that it can happen, but am definitely not holding my breath either, and that comes with been a fan of this franchise for a very long time. Perspective. And a lot of heart ache. And some magic too which is enough to keep us from jumping off a bridge.

Good plan. I ended up with a half dozen large boxes of hockey cards, enough to make up a lot of the 94 team which a few years back I sorted and sent to my siblings who are also Canuck nuts. Mostly 85-95 with pretty much any rookie from that time period. Lidstrom, Sellane, Bure rookies etc. Sitting in my closet collecting dust..

Funny how nobody was posting about the “fact” Dahlen is a scrub and will never play in the NHL until we trade him for someone who couldn’t hold his jock strap at the same age. Nine points in the last nine AHL games isn’t brought up, or any of the praise that was been showered on him since last year. If his agent or him were whining, then hold on to him longer and make a trade for a pick at the draft or at least find a player that approximates (and I Hope I’m wrong here with Karlsson, but not holding my breath). Do you live in Utica? If you do perhaps you should answer what another poster said about guessing there is nowhere to eat and depressing culture (if you won’t I can take a stab at that at least having been there a couple times myself).

This is something that I agree on, at least the two games I watched live, he’s great one game and benched the next game for a horrible goal he allowed just because he went for the puck instead of taking the body (100% on him) in what should have been a simple play. Dahlen was the first star and our best forward the other game. As an aside JG was pretty decent, and not slow. Had better speed then when in Juniors, noticeably quicker.

I think he accidentally on purpose took EP out of the game. He said otherwise, but what else is he going to say...he was more honest a week before where he publicly stated he hated Swedes...which is pretty normal in their culture, in the international stage the Swedes are like their big brother that never goes easy on them. And they celebrate beating them like winning a gold medal no matter the stage and if it’s a nothing game (and when it if a real gold medal immortalize it on stamps and coins). I just wish this team stood up for each other more right away, take the penalty and make it hard for them to beat on our skill guys. That said they get full marks as they did stand up for EP when they played Florida again, and for what that’s worth it did send a message that they are willing to balance the books for guys that get away with one. Wonder if they’re memories will be as long for Kout however you spell his name too.

Well they did in MTL when a$&hole FIN did his jujitsu leg roll...so I don’t know maybe they didn’t ... but like I said the coaches watch the plays on their devices and I’m sure they would have wanted to know what the heck happened if nobody else saw it. Hutton u believe watched the whole thing develop in MTL and didn’t even give the guy a face wash or a gloved punch. Again like I said they came out ready for him the next game.
-
Wouldn’t they have shown it on the jumbotron? If not at the very least the coaching staff should have picked up on what happened by watching it on their devices, us at home got to see it several times after all. They did come after him hard the next game which was great to see...hope McEwen can stick around, we need his toughness now more then ever. Every other time the Canucks have rebuilt their GMs made sure we’d at least be hard to play against, with a pugilistic fourth line and some tough SOBs playing defense too...and it made the games more bearable, at least then they couldn’t beat us in the alley and stayed well clear of the few good players we had. Benning gets a bit of a bye given the pratically every team doesn’t have an enforcer on it, but I still don’t really give a damn about that, I wish he would just go get one, and a tough/great one at that and play him against certain teams. What’s it really matter? We are going to suck anyways might as well make it more entertaining and remove any victimhood out of the equation. If EP gets hurt again this year...well let’s just say not enough was done.

Absolutely. Like the draft coming up. If he had character issues teams are willing to look past that most of the time when your that skilled (which he is). I’ve made an ass of myself a few times on this site bellyaching over some players he didn’t pick (Glass/Valardi) and I Hope this is one of those times..but I don’t think it is.
-
Yep, Benning just lied to his fan base and traded one of his “untouchables” (go back a year and listen to the guys he listed, Dahlen was one of them) for...gulp a guy that isn’t nearly as good as he was at 19. I agree that management should consider making some trades with out futures to make the team better now, this move was NOT one of them.
-
Sooo..:in three years we have somebody to replace Beagle in the system instead of a top six L Winger which now we have zero prospects for? This is a major head scratcher, Dahlen was better than Karlsson at the same age, and was turning into one of the better forwards in UTICA...he’s not far off now. I see a lot of posts saying Dahlen won’t make it, I wonder how many of those posters went to any Comet games this year and are just parroting junk. I really don’t get this deal at all, I said earlier something else must be going on, since we got him the trade comes up as a fleecing often (recent THN mag and they’ve talked about it several times as one of Bennings best moves), and we just let him go for no apparent reason. What’s next? Hammerstron was high on both EP and Dahlen and he’s our guy in Sweden, I wonder what he thinks about this and this kid Karlsson. He better get better and fast, or this could come back and bite Benning in the ass big time.
-
Going on the record now that I don’t like this trade on bit. There must be something going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about. Seems like a step backwards, Dahlen is close to NHL ready IMO. Not going to throw the remote like I did when he passed on MT for OJ, but this Karlsson kid better play like his name-sakes...

Gudbranson NOW officially The WORST PLAYER in the League
IBatch replied to RU SERIOUS's topic in Canucks Talk
Everyone knows that he shouldn’t be anything but a bottom pairing defenseman at this time, injuries have forced bad match ups and as one poster mentioned scoring is way, way up this year (thanks in large part due to the slashing hands no longer occurring, in one game a few years ago Gaudreau wash slashed 22 times in the hands) and if you take that into consideration percentage wise it doesn’t look as bad. As long as we don’t have another player on the team that had no intimidation factor (and other players do fear him and won’t fight him), his value is a lot more than his stats. -

Absolutely, one of my all time favourite defenseman, but when he got here he was no longer used as a number one, a bit long in the tooth. I liked how he could hang on to anyone, and how strong he was around the net...remember Probert lining him up then Babych hip checked him behind the net and he went flying over him. He was consistently good for us, not much different that way then Ohlund or Salo. His WNP Year’s If continued would have put him in the HHOF, at the time he was producing like Borque, but with a better mustachios. -

Ok, that’s just all star selections, you know when they pick the best players from each conference and play a game (or it used to be before fan votes and token players sent to represent each team). That’s ok, I get it you like Salo, I like Babych but would never think to say he’s the most complete defenseman we’ve ever had or the closest thing to a true number one. 67th all-time in scoring for defenseman, over 500 points playing on some pretty bad teams too, was tough and could cream guys, and was a good skater for a big man etc. Might as well say Aucion, he had more points than Ohlund and was a pretty solid defenseman in the league for a long time, and the record for PPG in a season. I started this by saying Jovo is the closest thing we’ve had to a true number one/complete defenseman, Ohlund and Salo were good too but he was on a different level. -

Me too, Jovonoski 7 all-star games, Salo zero. And that’s without been known for just his scoring, plus he was good enough for the Olympics playing for a country that fills half the NHL with players, and played a role in winning a golf medal. Salo was good no doubt when he played, but not exactly what I’d call a compete defenseman. -

Really Salo? I’d pick quite a few guys before him, but I agree with the hurt so often part. edit: Jovo scored over 500 points, is currently 67 all-time, Ohlund is behind guys like Aucoin, Hamhuis and McSorely, 134ish...Salo well it’s hard to score from the infirmary...
