Canucks Top Ten prospects (Updated for 2018-2019)
IBatch replied to 48MPHSlapShot's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Same here. There will be the usual shufffle with some perrenial playoff teams sliding out and a few surprises. CAL is hard to gauge, they could win the division or be a lottery team no doubt. The CALI teams will still be the ones to beat but they are all hanging in there with their own aging cores. Which EDM will we see this year? The one that ended their season just short of a third round and started as a perceived contender with some of the best odds from Vegas to win it all? Or the one we saw the first half of last season? Probably something in-between. Vegas will find things harder without Neal and Perron, Stastny helps but they can't do it again can they? Wouldn't bet against them at this point. 1. SJ (last kick at the can) 2. LA (a few more tries) 3. Vegas (just not fair) wild card ANA, CAL or EDM wild card 2 central team VAN 10 pts out ARI Galychenyuk not enough to leave the basement, but they are on the stairs now right with us -

I think they overrated some of the current draft class, Glass was probably way up last year too and now has fallen into a more realistic position. THN does a better job IMO, they use a panel of ten or more NHL scouts, and NHL executives in charge of scouting, rank them both on NHL readiness but more on how they perceive their careers will be against their peer group of prospects. Demko and OJ have been in their top 20-30 two years in a row, new draftees unless they are considered truly elite won't make the top hundred without some development. Before the draft Pettersson and Casey M. were their top two, but both moved up there from their starting positions, way up. I'd expect Dahlin, Zadina, BT (he outplayed CM as a 17 year old at the WJC was their best player as a 17 year old which never happens, neither Crosby or McDavid did that on team Canada) to displace some guys, Hughes maybe too, in fact Dahlin won't even make their next edition because he will already be playing. Still a neat list and not that far off , just a little bloated from the recent draft. Gaudette was in the low 70's BTW and worked his way into the top hundred last year...great pick. -

Thanks for posting, it's nice to see any and all attention our prospect group is garnering for many reasons, as these guys start to make it the pendulum of negativity-praise will start swinging more towards praise for management, and it's been noticeable on a national scale for over a year now and should only get better. Surprised a little on where Hughes slotted in and some of the new additions even though they won't be here long (Dahlin), but they will move up or down before they get their turn in an NHL outfit or sometimes slide right out all together. THN had Demko and OJ in the mid-low twenties (OJ higher) and five in the top 100, culmatively more than any other team and only a few had five, most had two or three, some four. Thanks for posting! -
One thing that Ohlund could do that most guys can't is utterly obliterate them with hits. Guys back East took some time to figure this out, remember regular highlights of him crushing guys when he went to TB, took some time for them to stay away from his side.! Sure OJ will be fine with the physical stuff, but sure enjoy a good open ice hit or guys getting laid out along the boards. Edler, JV and Gudbranson have this element too, but Ohlund was sure a compete two-way guy for us, I think OJ will be even better at certain things, our defense's future is looking way, way up after this years draft too. Woo wouldn't have been around for us if he wasn't injured, mid-first round pick probably, this years Lind who also has a bright future.. when Campbell is writing great things about our future in his article about Linden leaving it's obvious what's going on here is getting noticed, one more draft like the last two and we as fans just might get to experience the next greatest Canucks team three cores in a row which is truly a rare thing. WCE, Sedin, BBB? Or will it be the Pettersson era? Wonder what it will be coined...something good I'm sure, Vancouver hockey in the 2020's is going to be outstanding.
-
That would be great, I'm all for any of young players getting their shot and developing together in the AHL. It's ok if they need time, I'm hoping we can add another core piece at the draft next year, either a winger or a defenseman.
-
Two yeas ago TO played with seven regular shift rookies and made the playoffs...sure one was Mathews but it shows it can happen. Don't see that happening here though, at least not this year, Greens focus (and Bennings) will be on deciding who to play with who and who to cut bait on, too many regulars not enough spots.
-
Hughes can use the year to hit the gym and assert himself on the ice in a top role. Stoked he's not been rushed and sticking to developing the right way. Next year he might have grown another inch and added ten that pounds of muscles to his frame, and he can work on his shot to bring it up to an elite level like Ellis did. I'd bet we will see a more rounded and physically better player when he makes his debut, and it gives OJ a chance to get his feet wet which is ideal.
-
Wonder if Green will move Hughes to his off side on the first unit PP and let him rove around while OJ mans the line and fires hard accurate shots at the net for rebounds and tip ins....or just keeps OJ to man the second unit. Edler might not be around or maybe he will, but we sure need a new look on the PP. Either way we need his skill and poise in the blue line, he was the most balanced of all the defenseman available and that hasn't changed.
-
Should Mathews get the captaincy or Tavares or should the become the first team with two or should the both get As and give it to Marner?
-
That's the first time I've seen contender used in the correct context. Fire away.
-
Ouch... that is my head after reading the last page on this thread, will he come back? Won't he come back? Does Bennings legacy hang on the fact he left? Does the KHL defenseman of the year come from Putins meddling? WTF? Did Willie screw us? Is Goldobin in the lineup just to get Tryamkin back ( ok that's just me adding something) ugh ugh super ugh.

Good point Zepp. Every year the draft order would change quite a bit even in the upper first round, not as much with the first overalls, but there are examples and none are a better warning then Daigle given he was also touted as a generational talent, the best player since Lindros (and hyped almsot as much, his junior numbers were sick). Yakupov was a swing and a miss, but he outscored Svecknikov so it's not like it he wasn't expected to succeed. That said history also shows that with the hype, usually there is substance more often than not. Mathews, McDavid and maybe Eichel are recent examples of similar hype, before that we'd have to go back to Crosby and Ovi. All these guys were big hits...the odds are definitely in favour of Dahlin to become one heck of a defenseman. This year had quite a few other highly touted D, it could end up similar to the year Doughty was drafted with the sheer number of very good-elite defenseman entering the league and it will be interesting to look back 5-7 years from now and see who really got it right, there will be some surprises for sure.

Yashin had his issues with management but it never affected him with his teammates or his production. For a while he was one of the best players in the league, which is why when he did get traded NYI threw ridiculous money at him (which they finally finished paying just a short while ago). They also ended up with Chara but of course screwed up on that one too...definitely get your point about not doing well with some of their picks. Hossa, Spezza and Alfie weren't all bad either, and when they were at their prime OTT was one of the best teams in the league for a couple years, with one final appearance.
-
Good point. Pronger himself joked about this from the beginning, he knew he was the better pick but was happy not to go to Ottawa, and didn't mind rubbing it in Daigles face as his career took of and Yashin became the go to guy (at less money, even though one of the three GMs they went through early on promised to fix that, which wasn't honoured later by the next GM). Daigle was hyped heavily, the best player since Lindros etc and his contract became a big reason for GMs pushing a cap on rookies later. As for the OP, really? Why not do a Sergechev or McAcoy vs OJ next....

First year of the next era will be exciting as a lot of young players in the NHL and outside looking in push to make the line-up. This helps us make a modest step towards relevance in our division again, but we still will be a bottom ten lottery team, even if we are relatively healthy. Or we make a late season push and get a wild card spot beating out EDM the last game of the regular season. McDavid cries on national TV, Cherry blasts him and decides to cheer on the Canucks because TO flops and doesn't make the playoffs. Boeser avoids sophomore slump and scores forty goals joining an elite group of former Canucks that have managed that feet. Pettersson takes a bit to get his footing in the pre-seaoson, but comes out guns ablazing the first half but struggles as the season wears on. His buddy Dahlen gets some games and doesn't disappoint and re-ignites Pettersson at the end of the year, he wins the Calder. Markstrom continues to struggle with early goals but is otherwise good, Demko gets some games and passes Markstrom in career shut-outs his first month. Edler or Tanev gets traded at the deadline, Sutter too, Gaudette makes him expendable. L.E scores 55 points playing with Pettersson. Thank god. Utica loses in the Calder Cup final...because Demko is breaking Markstoms shut-out record. Hughes gets some games late and doesn’t disappoint. Gudbranson is healthy and plays great all year too, shades of W. Mitchell. We are a bubble team at the TDL and Benning drops the boom also trading Bear, Granlund and Hutton despite having career years, adding Sutter and Tanev/Edler, we end up with two extra firsts, three seconds and a third next draft....we draw third and use these picks to draft Quintons brother .... The following year we start a decade plus of consistent playoff appearances...

You bet, and no doubt there will be a lot of movement up and down as players get injured and drop or don't improve much and others like Glass shoot up from nowhere.
-
Nope, not all tickets at least it's noticeable that other cities allow fans into the building from other teams, in Dallas they had a couple Habs fans ready on camera for shocks of amazement that they passed on BT and Zadina. Good for a chuckle at least. They don't recommend players to go to the draft themselves unless there is a chance they get drafted in the first round, some come regardless but even if all of them from the combine stayed and half the rest that get drafted it would only fill a few sections with their families. I'd suspect there should be thousands of tickets, not that they'd be easy to get.
-
Yep. But the players coming up will get us there eventually (including the next couple of drafts). If Demko or Deipetro are .920 or better goalies that would help a lot. If OJ can be a two-way force that too. If Hughes can be a number one defenseman that too. A lot of maybes to probably's, but we won't find out for two or three more years anyways so I hope Benning can just keep doing what he's doing without any UFA shinnanagens that could block these guys, gum up the cap and that his placeholders are ones that people want at the TDL for more picks... This is hockey and anything can happen year to year now with parity, but two more top ten selections would go a long way in making sure that once we ascend we stay there for a long time, that's what I'm hoping for then straight to the top of our division. We'd be smart to keep Hughes down for one year even if he's close.
-
He's not the Rob Zepp, but claims to have played a lot of different levels of hockey and is obviously a Canuck fan.
-
Good point...Ovi, Kuznetsov,Orlov, ... Tryamkin would be a red army team that would make 96-99 red Wings team proud.
-
Its a little early to tell. On paper and by scouting reports he's doing well based on the prospect pool, but at some point those guys either have to become roster players, or flops. I've read and heard GMs say they expect to get one roster player a draft, anyone more is a bonus. This correlates well with the odds per each round cumulated. I'd suggest one per year as a baseline is just acceptable, two very good, more than that unbelievable. Its also somewhat subjective because I'd rather have one Boeser instead of three JVs . Also draft position matters a lot, obviously it's easier to get your first player if you draft top five, than in the last five. THN does a blurb every year that levels the playing field by assigning a ranking system based on ADP, so far Bennings being ordinary, but most of his guys are still developing, that should change soon, probably next year. Next season starts as draft plus four complete. Boeser, JV and Tryamkin have made it to the show, which is ok considering most guys need are least one or two years before making it. If Pettersson, Demko, Juolevi and Gaudette play too than he's well past the baseline, with some quality players add Bear and Pouliot to the mix for picks used to get players and it looks ok now too. I'd say this is the year where Bennings drafting will either start to really show, or lose some luster, but at this point anyways I will go with the scouting reports, we've got a pretty kick ass pool.. not sure if that helps
-
I've never had a problem with using a second or third pick for a former high draft pick with upside, or a former low pick playing extremely well .... Second and third rounders dont usually play in the NHL, Bear, Vey, Pouliot were all low risk ventures, nobody is expecting top line or top pairing production from these guys but there is an increased expectation based on the "what we could have got instead" because undoubtedly, someone from the second or third round is going to be extraordinary, and we miss out. They call them lottery tickets for a reason, once every ten picks a second rounder will have an average seven year NHL career, even less likely they will be a star. Bear looks to be a lock for that so Benning is way ahead, even if Pouliot joins Vey (and for third rounders the odds are even more extreme). The fact Benning has found two gems in the fifth and third round in Gaudette and Tryamkin adds fodder to the "what we could of had " fire, but in reality we should be happy for both scenarios, Bear and likely Pouliot are NHLers, circumventing the odds, and Gaudette and Tryamkin are both incredible picks, fifth rounders hardly ever develop into even depth injury replacement guys. Next year should be the first year we really get to see Bennings picks come up in pairs (or droves), Pettersson and Dahlen could be the Sedin replacement strategy, Gaudette will get an extended trial period, and will likely not go down, and Juolevi plus Demko could also see action, plus possibly this year's pick. Having Bear and Pouliot already in play makes us better than the likely return, and adds youth that's a bit older to spread out the age gap of the next core a little too.
-
We will see soon how Dahlen turns out...he's had an incredible season, and it's not over yet after getting his promotion into the AHL. As far as prospects go he's moved up twenty-five spots since he's taken over, so that should answer how we are doing compared to the rest of the league, and that doesn't include BB. Now once these guys start making the show in droves the pool could slip, but that's ok.

A loyalist is faithful to and committed to the British Colonies, therefore against the Rebel Forces arming themselves and calling it a revolution against the Empire (the British one). The Red Coats are coming! Prepare for battle, hide your kids, hide your mistress! Sounds about as stupid as the tweets your post is referring to right?
