You bet. Dahlen is Pettersson's best bud, and trading for him part of some master plan....I like Bennings' response when he infers that he would have used the first overall to draft Pettersson in a redo. It appears there is quite a bit of strategy behind the scenes to make Pettersson comfortable, and set him up with his friend at some point in the future. Dahlens no slouch either, who knows how his play will translate, but you can guarantee that if they are on the same line that there will be both some inside competition between the two as well as a drive to make each other better.

[Discussion] Signing Kane in the offseason

Hasek faced Roy in 98 Olympics, including the shootout and heat him, but wonder how he would have faced against 93 10 OT win Roy... Roy beat Broduer head to head for the cup so I'd have him ahead of Broduer too. Thomas did a Hasek impression in 2010, otherwise Vancouver likely would have won. Hard to believe in went to seven games considering we scored less than ten goals all series. Luongo's two shutouts helped for sure. He should get in the Hall when he's done. Never watched Sawchuk, but guys would say you could throw handful of rice at him and he would stop every one. Parent and Dryden were great too. -

It's more than I want to talk about too... Ok so Hasek is obviously the best Buffalo goalie all time, if not the best ever period, who would you rank as number two? In a head to head with Vancouver's best it would be Luongo with McLean as back-up... -

I've been reading about the jock tax for several years and think that you should take a bit more time. The 55% is a combined income tax rate, both federal and state and only gets that high for star like contracts six million plus in certain states that penalize the heaviest like NY. It's on a sliding scale, like I mentioned before, and doesn't affect the 1-2 million guys as much, in other words it doesn't matter where they play their paychecks will be about the same. This is pre deductions, but those are above my pay grade, and would only happen at both sides of the border on annual filing. Insurance agent fees etc are obviously deducted. This started for me a couple years ago when I read a THN issue about players going bankrupt, in it they listed all the different teams from the lowest combined tax rate to the highest (best to worst), FLD and TB were at the top followed by Calgary, EDM then Vancouver, then WNP, TO, OTT, MTL and then the rest of the American teams. Gavin group is a big financial firm, pretty sure you can use it for an easy source for how your pay stub comes before you send it to your accountant. And I'm pretty sure THN did their research too. The Gavin Group tax culculator uses the NHL logos due to their affiliations too, pretty sure they wouldn't be getting away with that if they were sending false data out their.. but I'm all ears if what they are using isn't current of false (they added Vegas this year ). -

That's the weirdest thing about the state taxes, it's supposed to be less socialist down there but they treat their pro athletes like Leninites. Especially those who make more than 5 million, it's a steep sliding tax scale down there. -

I think both sides have plenty of loop holes. So did Trump federalist the individual state tax? The rates I'm looking at are much higher, up to 55%, and the only states that were that low for NHL players were Nevada and Florida. I've used the Gavin group to see how different players salaries are affected for a couple years now, and I don't see anything about this one there is it pretty recent? Also Hulls foot was in the crease. Shouldn't have counted. Edit. If this happens the next CBA will have to include something to level the playing field, most Canadian teams are in around 47%, that's a lot of extra cap room...it's one thing to have three teams get bloated cap space, this would need to be worked out. -

From the Gavin group, combined tax rate on 6,000,000 in Vancouver is 236,800 less in than NYR after typical deductions. Tampa players pay 502k less than Vancouver on the same contract, in SJ your pay 271,333 more in taxes and Vegas the same as Tampa 502k. The higher the contract value the higher the tax goes up in all states but Vegas and Tampa, in Canada it's pretty consistent no matter if your a 2 million or a 10 million player. The take away is that stars pay significantly more taxes in all the states but Florida and Vegas than Canadian teams, plus they are buying Canadian goods and real estate with American money, ie they don't have it too bad north of the border. And it's almost cap circumvention in Vegas and Florida compared to the rest of the league, a 38% combined income tax rate is high, but not as high as 55%. -

You have to wonder if Daley and other pro sports were involved somehow, it would be very difficult to have a cap at all if it wasn't at least close to a level playing field, which for the most part it is. I still think TB is getting some breaks given Stamkos extremely team friendly contract might not have been so friendly if the same team was in NY. I guess the GMs don't mind enough for now, but at some point maybe they should consider lowering the cap there and Nevada if they also get the same breaks (I'm not sure about them). I was shocked to see the Calgary, EDM and Vancouver so high on the list of teams with the overall lowest tax implications, so hope they just leave it alone. -

It works differently in the states for athletes, check it out, NY has some of the highest taxes in the NHL, there are some good calculators all ready to go if you google NHL tax calculator. It doesn't affect the lower tier players as much, but once you get over 5 million most states have higher taxes than any Canadian team go figure. They vary from 48-55plus %, ouch. It makes a big difference in take home pay though. Florida is sheltered somewhat. IMO the cap should be an even playing field, each team should have it's own cap reflecting the tax brackets, and TB and Florida should have a lower cap. -

Absolutely. Kane has made it apparent in the past that he likes big stacks of cash with his infamous rooftop deck or money photos, the first one got him in trouble, the second one was a joke on the first one. Who will be the highest bidder? FLD, TB and Vegas both can offer a little less to equal Vancouver money, our taxes are better than all but those states, I think if he does well in SJ and and he has a good playoff they could keep him...otherwise the highest bidder no doubt. -

Next year OEL too. There are so very good just outside elite, potential to be elite, defenseman that could reach free agency that would be great to pick up. Either of those guys would change our defense for the better. Going forward our cap space will become one of out biggest assets, I hope management uses it wisely. Kane and his 45-55 points can stay away for probably Horvat type money, we can find that from within. Also I'd rather see Granlind, Bear and Hutton recycled than resigned, it will also whittle away at cap space and all three positions can and should be replaced internally. -

I think we can find his 45-55 points somewhere in our pool soon, maybe even next year. Fifty points and 25 goals seems his mid prime range which would help of course, as would some physical play, id just rather see the money used to help on defense and saved for something better. -
Congratulations on the three years ELC. Looks like management has plans for him in the league, he's certainly earned it. Already if there was a redraft he'd move way up .... Love this pick, he could be our secret weapon. Gaudette is getting more press as he should given his league and what he's accomplishing, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Lind is going to have a long career, which could even start next year. The following one for sure.

Congrats to Lu - moving up in all time wins - Luuuu

Fluery seems to have landed himself a plum assignment with the wtf? Vegas squad, not hard to post forty win seasons there for a while if they are the real thing and he stays healthy. He also happens to be the last goaltender to get drafted and not see significant seasoning before the show so there really won't be anyone catching up for a long, long time. Lundqvist is definitely not a for sure thing, if Luongo plays out his contract as a backup and posts ten wins per season I don't think he's catching up. 500 wins is an amazing legacy. Hope Lou gets that far at least. -

Another fair Benning deal. A small premium for potential, a good chance at value in year two or three and his style is in demand every deadline.

Do no harm. ...... In hockey it's more like do no harm to your team, and sometimes that means the other guy has trouble sleeping at night because of the lumps on his head. Dowd (LA) after losing a fight to Marty McSorely way back when...

Nice guy that could check guys right through the glass, and was Vancouver's only answer to hulking two way beast Otto so they moved him from the wing to center and the rest is history. Sure he couldn't fight his way through a paper bag, but would play with broken ribs and block a puck with his face to help the team win. We need more guys like Linden to get tougher and more push back.
-
Not necessarily, but I do see where your coming from. Beliveau, Sakic and Gretzky wouldnt get guys in heads locks after the whistle either but all player on teams that could back up the rough stuff, and would occasionally get excited (well at least Gretzky would get verbal). Different eras though, currently things are pretty soft all over in comparison.

You bet, I was hoping we'd stay down in the standings, but for better or worse this team when healthy really isn't all that bad. We are nothing like some of the terrible teams in the past (NJ in the 80s) that came out in the end as contenders, but another top ten pick would still do us wonders down the road. The next two drafts will hopefully become the depth we need to push us over the top when injuries happen. If Pettersson comes as advertised, next year we could be a bubble team, especially if goaltending shores up when Demko arrives. Personally in think it's possible we do what COL did this year next year, a big jump in the standings, so a top five pick would be the medicine we need this draft....

Right you are. Players never tank, management might sell to make it harder to win though...Ottawas owner must be almost mad after getting fooled into thinking Duchene would right their train, it's derailed, actually he kind of is anyways, blaming fans. Is this not getting signed thing going to attect Jimbo from not trading whatever vets he can do get this train back on track? Or is someone whispering into the owners ear that the rebuild worked because if you take away the injuries this would be a bubble team right now. Ok that was a joke. No depth still means there is work to do. Good game last night.

It's sickening what's happened, and it wasn't too easy to get in the market in the ninetees either. Back in the 50-60s it used to be a mechanic could buy a house and afford the mortgage as a single wage family of four, with an annual salary that was a quarter of the value of the home. Think about it for a minute. That would mean mechanic in Burnaby would be earning 350,000 today, and his tax bracket would be around 25%. This economy is broken. The rich are only getting richer, and the middle class is now forced to have two highly educated professionals working at what used to be high end jobs, just to buy a bungalow in North Vancouver.

I think your right on the money with the no patience thing, and it is possible that includes upper management/ownership. This team was bound to fall of a cliff with no parachute or little returns available from the old core aside from Horvat, Tanev and Hutton ( Ok Sutter too). We've made it to the bottom and help is on the way. Good help too, the best prospect pools turn into the best teams with regularity.... I understand it must be difficult for the generations of fans that have only known the Sedin and maybe Naslund era, that sample size came with a lot of winning and the best team we've ever assembled. I'm pretty sure us older guys are better equipped for getting through the bottom dwelling.

If Tryamkin comes back ( he's actually improving which is good ), we trade for a good 2-3 defenseman and draft Dahlin things would turn around and it can happen that fast I agree. I'm not holding my breath anymore with OJ, after watching McAvoy control the tempo and play Dec. 30 in Ottawa all game long on the top line ( he was their best player IMO, despite the 5-0 shutout by Rask, only one assist, another was taken away though no goal without him taking it all over their zone and making the play) and then watching OJ at the juniors it makes me winch. He's so far behind MaCovoy and Sergechev (who also hits, he's a big body) development its not even debatable. If he ends up on the team next year and sticks that would be a win for me at this point, don't expect much more than maybe a Tanev 2.0 ( minus injuries, which is ok). It's hard to get much eye time on him other than the juniors, it's just not enough. I'm glad he's getting stiffer competition, and will continue most likely next year in the AHL, and it does bode well that he's doing well against it. I would be overjoyed if he's really the next Tempo N. in disguise. Or a Vlasic type, recently voted a top fifty overall player by THN, who btw see a lot of promise in him, before the season had him ranked higher than Boeser in our prospect pool...so what do I know. Next year at the same time i hope to find this post and add a written apology.
-
Definitely. I believe we will see one of our higher end forward prospects, go to a team rich in young defenseman such as Philadelphia. Thats the biggest problem area as far as the youth movement goes. Even with a hail Mary this season and lucky balls ending in Dahlin wouldnt be enough IMO, although it would sure help a lot. Lind comes to mind, hopefully he keeps it up and maybe we can get a prospect/player that needs another look like Shea Theodore or add something to go for more of a sure thing. Elder for Sbisa ha ha. OJ isn't a bust yet but he's not exactly working his way up his draft class either. I think we need two of Ohlund/Jovonoski/Lumme types before we are back in business, with a solid group around them (Tryamkin coming back would be great) before we become a good team again. Goaltending looks promising, and a team can always find a former good goalie/project until something clicks so it's not as worrisome. Our first line looks sorted IMO. Boeser with Horvat is enough until Pettersson arrives and who knows he could play on that line. The rest is not nearly as certain, but Lind is looking pretty good. Eberle comes to mind as a comparison minus the clutch junior performance but next year he should make the team so who knows. Cap space won't be an issue as long as Benning learned his lesson with L.E., which I think he did given what he did last summer. Curiously we will be one of only a few teams that could go after Tavares this summer. A little less than McDavid is what I think it will take to pry him out and win that auction. It would allow Horvat to work on becoming a great second line center, and push things ahead at least a year. I'd rather wait and not participate ( unless we got him for 8 x6, which given the year he's having and Kopitars hundred million contract is a pipe dream) but wouldn't mind it either. Lots to look forward too!
