I was thinking about this after last night's game. I have been very critical of Jake's lack of production but I read an earlier post about him playing the off-wing like he did in juniors with the Hitmen. When he was drafted, there were questions about his hockey sense. However, as much as we can beat the "should've drafted Ehlers/Nylander" horse to death, Jake was drafted for his speed, deadly shot and his feared hitting. Those attributes need to be utilized. His defensive play and awareness has improved steadily, with the odd lapse here and there. He's only a year older than Brock. I'm in full agreement with Nucker67 here. If Brock can be our Mike Bossy and Bo can be our Bryan Trottier, I can't see why Jake can't be our Clark Gillies. Green talks about being hard to play against. Jake can be that guy who goes up-and-down on left wing, winning puck battles, throwing thunderous hits, creating room for Brock and Bo and be a menacing net presence for deflections and rebounds. Jake will never be an all-around offensive player but he's no defensive plug either.
Some players do very well as off-wingers. Tony Tanti was a left-shooting right wing. There's no reason why Jake can't be a difference maker on left wing with Bo and Brock.
Excellent performance by Jake last night by the way.
