  1. Gaunce currently #1 in the league with points per game played. Trade high!
  2. I'd be alright with a mini Datsyuk on the team for the next 20 years
  3. Not to mention the huge opportunity it gives him to be "the guy" in Utica, playing huge minutes and gaining some confidence. While it might have been nice for him to collect a bit of cash and get that first call up, he'll have plenty of opportunities in the future.
  4. His apology would mean more if he didn't spend most of his interview afterwards trying to defend the play and push the blame off himself. He tries to play it off like it's just an everyday body check, ignoring the stick between the legs can opener and the subsequent take-down. In the sportsnet interview he did (the one where he mentions the apology) he talks about it like the events just unfolded out of his control. "It was part of the game and it was just a hockey play where I think the fact I came into the boards and went stick on puck and my stick kinda got stuck in there, propped him up a little bit too much, and that’s probably what led to what happened afterwards.” We all saw him get embarrassed on numerous occasions during the game. I'm not going to say that his intent was to give Elias a concussion, I'd like to believe that most if not all hockey players have more respect than that, but he was certainly trying to knock the wind out of Elias' sails and he went too far. He should have owned up to that, but he didn't. I like Elias' response... "thanks for reaching out"
  5. 4 out of 5 of those were Mike Gillis picks. Says more about Mike Gillis than it does about draft position.
  6. I'm not saying those past political leaders didn't have their own methods of communication, but it was at a much smaller scale. These days, someone can post something on Twitter, Facebook, etc., and within minutes it's been shared millions of times across the entire world. By the time someone figures out that it's false information it's too late and people have already made up their minds. It's interesting, because social media allows anyone to have a voice and not be censored, so in that sense it's a great tool. But at the same time it's up to the people receiving information to vet it and determine what a reliable source looks like. Unfortunately, people are not doing the vetting, as we've seen over the past few years, and that's why we're seeing so many people taking advantage of social media to spew hate speech and divide the political spectrum further and further apart. For what it's worth, Churchill used radio to bring Britain together when they were on the verge of being defeated by the Germans. Trump has done nothing but try and divide the right against the left. Can't even compare the two.
  7. Another casualty of Social Media I'm afraid. Instant, often false, information at all hours of the day from your cell phone/computer. Algorithms that cater your viewing to things that appeal to you or align with your beliefs. The other way to look at it, is that sometimes these problems aren't as bad as they seem. Unfortunately the comments sections of most news sources are just breeding grounds for misinformation. When you have paid posters and bots posting the same garbage all the time, under different aliases, it starts to seem like there is a disproportionately large part of the population with more and more extreme and ignorant views. I'd like to believe that the majority of the population are still reasonable people with at least a shred of common sense.
  8. Once he can find his shot again he'll be a force. The comparison's to Hansen are sometimes uncanny, he's like a bigger, faster Hansen with the same hands of stone haha.
  9. You mean qualities like Speed, Hitting, his Shot? Now you're saying he suddenly has all of those things this year with no way to predict it was coming? Jake has been one of the fastest since day 1, his hitting has been top since day 1, and we've seen glimpses of his shot. His issue always was (and may continue to be) CONSISTENCY (and related to that, his PROFESSIONALISM). Pull your head out of your butt and go watch some video of him over the last few years, the signs are there.
  10. I think a lot of people severely underestimate how big Horvat is. He is listed at 223lb at just 6 feet tall, he is built like a wrecking ball. There's a reason why they called him the bull. Jake is really turning a corner this season, as so many of us on here thought that he would. Turns out it just took a bit of patience, and not expecting every 18-19 year old kid to be a star 1st liner right out of the draft. He truly does have skills that cannot be taught, especially his combination of size/speed. I'm definitely noticing more awareness from him in the offensive zone, where he used to blow by the defender and just fire the puck from the side boards, now he is making plays towards the middle of the ice or behind the net before making his shot/pass. It's a sign of a kid who is starting to develop some confidence in the league. Props to Green for working so well with Jake and everyone who has had patience with him.
  11. Not sure why, but I can't help but make a little smile when Boeser lets off his shot. It's just something else. Look how delayed Lundquist's reaction is on it. It's already behind him by the time he sticks his pad out.
  12. True, but it's a little different to be doing it at Elias' age. The hype is real.
  13. I find these debates on hockey IQ hilarious. It is such a subjective kind of skill in the first place, what appears to be great IQ to one person might be low IQ to another. How do you even measure it? The way I see it "making the right play" (as you put it) would be a characteristic of someone having good hockey IQ. Just because he isn't flashy doesn't mean he doesn't think the game well. Olli's looking like a pretty good prospect!
  14. the Dutch Gretzky! he did have a good run in Montreal
  15. I feel like people forget the contract part of the equation. Kane is going to demand big money, even if he is a hometown boy. And there's still no guarantee that he will for sure sign in Vancouver if approached, it's all speculation and rumours at this point.
  16. Decent game by Jake last night. His speed is so noticeable every time he's on the ice, when he learns how to take the momentum from the outside of the ice to the middle he's going to be a much better player (Green should make him study some Horvat video, he is hands down the best on the team at forcing his way to the net). Also he seems to be getting himself into good positions to score goals more often than not, his issue last night seemed to be bobbling pucks on his stick and little mistakes like that. Conditioning doesn't seem to be an issue this year, seeing a lot more hustle from him, especially at the end of a shift.
  17. Here are some examples. You're looking for someone to use the word "Bum" or "bust", that's not the point. Referring to a prospect as having no skill, a colossal failure as a pick, doing nothing positive since draft, is the same thing as claiming a prospect is a bust. How else would you describe a player that is a bust? The point is select few, mostly one, poster has been crapping all over Jake for a long time and people are just happy to see them finally eat crow, even if it is only a bit of pre-season success. "JV couldn't score with MacJesus on his line, if we are going to use this argument" "Our guy can't even get in to the lineup over our PTO signing Jack Skille. Nylander is contributing to his team already with 5 points in 4 games and looks like a star in the making. /thread" Original Quote: "Nice try on your BPA spin..Benning scouted Demko extensively at Boston College..and even his first draft alone: Virtanen,McCann,Demko,Tryamkin ..blew away anything that his predecessor ever did...That 2014 draft is shaping up to be one of the best drafts the Canucks have had in over a decade.....You also conveniently forgot to mention Brock Boeser drafted the following year." Reply: "Really? Because Virtanen looks great, right? McCann to eh, 0 points in 10 games this year what a stud. Tryamkin can't even get in good enough shape to play and goalies are unpredictable and we won't know for another 5 years minimum. You say every year GM's make so-so moves? Well every year GM's make good draft picks to" " I feel like I am watching a completely different player than everybody else. I am really freaked out actually, it's like I'm living in my own little world and I see things differently. Me and Alf are gonna be locked up in the psych ward together real soon The ONLY thing he can do is skate. I'm not even gonna bother listing the things he can't do well because the list is endless, he literally doesn't do anything well, other than skate. Do you guys not understand how hard it is to make the NHL? and you are expecting Jake to play a significant role for our team when the only skill he possesses is his skating.. Nail Yakupov was not only the best skater his draft class but he was also one of the most aggressive and physically dominant and he could shoot the puck extremely well but his peanut sized brain didn't get him anywhere....sound familiar? But at least Yakupov worked hard " "Oh thank god Virtanen looks good in this 9 minute highlight video, I was starting to get worried. I'm gonna create a montage of me going bar-down in my backyard and maybe CDC will sign me to an entry level. It's no secret he is a good skater, he needs to work on all other aspects of the game. Aspects that this video does not demonstrate whatsoever" "I'm not trashing Jake at all, I'm trashing the people who down rep me after giving my post game analysis, and then watching those same people get all giddy over one stupid highlight video. Nothing wrong with being excited with a little progress, but don't start crying if someone tells you that he sucked." "Once again, Hutton Wink adding absolutely nothing Jake Virtanen related. His play has been sooo dreadful that all we have in this thread is people like me reminding people that he sucks. And we have people like you who do nothing but complain about people who say he sucks. So unless he starts playing better we are stuck in this vicious circle and rightfully soo..we needed to hit on this pick, no if and's or but's about it. Colossal failure as an organization with such a bare prospects cupboard, and no stanley cup banners, closing in on half a century. If we didn't talk about his struggles there would literally be no other conversation going on. I'm all for listening to people pin point positive details in Jake's game. A poster a page back mentioned he is a great forechecker and I actually agree with that. What do you have to contribute? Nothing? K see ya later" "Nice seeing people finally admit how terrible of a pick this was. Welcome to the dark side" "This is just so not true and you are once again way out of line. Stop complaining about other people complaining, you are starting to make people like me look like angels. The kid has done nothing positive since being drafted and you are accusing people of being silent when he does well..? K, pal " Is that enough for you? Have a look back yourself, there's lots more.
  18. You're right, it was a very small number of people. But those people were accounting for the vast majority of the posts in this topic. I can see why people are suddenly calling them out.
  19. It certainly looked like Jake was at fault, but the play suddenly changed direction and he made a split decision to stay on the ice. I don't know how Green manages his bench, and neither do you. You missed the point though, we have dumb bench minors every pre-season and early season, especially with a new coach. I wouldn't put too much weight into it. A goal is a goal. And he has 3 of them. I don't care how he gets them in. I guess your just looking at him with unfavourable eyes.
  20. weaksauce goal? okay then... The penalty was pretty dumb, but I don't know who's fault that was. Every year (especially with a new coach) there are always stupid bench minors in the preseason and early season when everyone is still figuring stuff out. I wouldn't knock him that much because of that penalty. He had chances for a couple more goals that game too, one pass just missed his stick and another I can't remember the exact situation. Him and Gagner actually played very well together.
  21. We did, Daniel. Now, if we had two finishers on that line...
