I don't think we're on the same page. I meant was I feel that a lot of Russian players have this mindset that scoring goals is the most (and sometimes only) important thing in hockey. Nothing to do with NT's decision to move back to Russia.
-
It seems to me that a lot of Russian players have this same mindset.

Jake's development hasn't exactly been linear either. Which actually goes to further prove Forsberg's point.

900+ pages of 5th Line trashing Jake Virtanen and now it's suddenly silent. Maybe moved to the OJ thread? hmm...

That and another elite Goalie wouldn't hurt! C'mon Demko... no pressure.

Stecher was only cut temporarily, as it allowed Jim the time he needed to sort out his roster, and as it happened injuries allowed Stecher to come up easier than Jim had probably anticipated. He played most of the season on the Canucks roster and was not sent back down. That sounds to me like he earned his spot and Jim lived up to his word. No, Olli won't be able to follow the same path, which makes Jim's decision all that much harder. I for one can't wait to see what happens this September, there hasn't been this many exciting prospects in the system for a very long time.

Stecher did in fact get his spot that he earned. Sometimes it's not so easy as to just cut someone right out of training camp. A trade might have to be made, some hard decisions regarding waivers etc. I think Troy's 71 games played last year indicate pretty clearly that management came through on their promise.

He had a pretty decent rookie season actually, especially after the world juniors. I'm not sure if you recall but it also took Bo Horvat around 1/2 a season in the NHL to start looking like he belonged out there. The problem was this past season, started with him showing up out of shape. Then there was the crappy attitude, demotion to utica (i.e. his reality check). By all accounts he's starting to treat his career more professionally and seems to be in better shape. When you say "there's nothing positive" you show your true colours, your bias, and why most people can't take you seriously. I'm not saying he's turned it completely around, and is the 6th overall pick that everyone expected him to be, but he's making steps in the right direction to get his development back on track, and that's a positive.

Makes me cringe just thinking about that surgery. I liked Dorsett too, feel bad for him.

Gonna be a great player when he figures it all out. Hopefully we see him on the Canucks at some point this coming season, but he definitely needs to earn it.

2017 NHL Draft - Chicago, Illinois June 23-24 2017
Dekey Pete replied to hyper00's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Meh, Kings won with stellar goaltending and great defensive systems. Bruins won with great defense and a little help from the stripes. Both teams also had fast skilled players. I don't think the style of the NHL has changed as drastically as people say it has. Guys speed and skill will never be obsolete. Speed, skill and size, that's the player everyone wants. To your point about defense though, you're right. There have been a lot of dud defensemen picked early on, and a lot of all stars picked in later rounds. It's a risk for sure. -
i don't see why some struggle so hard with the fact that he actually did improve when you compare to how he started last season. Ideally Jake would have never come to camp overweight and out of shape, but he did. And he didn't work hard enough early on to keep a spot on the Canucks. Fast forward to his first 1/2 season in Utica, and he didn't seem to get it. He was making bad remarks to the press, his attitude didn't seem great, not working hard enough on the ice and it was showing. But by the second 1/2 things were starting to click for him. By all accounts he was starting to become his old self again, but at the pro level. (notice the underline). and let's not forget that he played almost the entire Utica season among essentially 3rd line career AHLers on a crappy Utica team. I'm not saying he should have been playing on the 1st line with the top scorers, because clearly Jake didn't deserve it for most of the season, but you have to consider this when you look solely at his stats for the year. Let's also not forget that he had one of the lowest shooting %'s on the team, while still managing a good number of shot attempts. That just screams a player who is having a little trouble trying to figure out what works and what doesn't at the professional level. So when these horse beaters post Jake's stats for his 2016/17 Utica season it looks very disappointing, yes. No one is arguing that. All people are saying is that he clearly made improvements at some point, late, during that season and we're all hoping he can continue that into training camp and next season. It's no question Jake regressed last year when you compare to the previous, but that doesn't mean that he can't come back and turn it all around. ramble over
-
Biggest takeaway from that highlight video for sure. He needs to realize that when he's got both defenders on the other team beat, it's time to drop that shoulder and cut in to a better scoring position.

As much as I would have loved to see Kassian turn it around while he was here, it seemed like he needed the wake up call he got before he really started to get his stuff together. I'm hoping that this year being demoted from the Canucks and spending the entire year with Utica while while watching countless players get called up ahead of him, was enough of a wake up call for Jake. He needs to come to camp next year in the best shape of his life and ready to take a spot.
-
I've noticed and pointed out his shot production too. He has one of the lower shooting %'s on the team. You can attribute that to a number of things (shooting from poor areas, "gripping the stick too tight", or just learning what it takes to score on professional goalies). Fact is, Jake has used his speed to blow past defenders and get shots on the net this year, he's just not getting the goals on the stat sheet. There's so much uncertainty to what type of player Jake might become in the future for the Canucks, and that's kind of what makes it exciting. He could be that guy in the playoffs that everyone HATES in a series (remember Buff from a few years back when he was on Chicago? Ferland? Torres?) Those are important pieces to a successful playoff team. Or he might never be able to put together enough consistency to stay in the NHL. Jury is still very much out on Jake.

I think the awkward facial expression they captured makes it look a little like a different person too. Really helps to explain why it's taken him such a long time to find his stride this year. If fitness is his biggest hurdle, and he has a strong offseason commitment to staying in shape, we could be looking at a different player come next year's training camp. Jake has enough raw skill to be a good/great player, he just needs to get his head on straight and really put in the work all year round.
-
Looks like a completely different person

Enough of this tired old ehlers nylander are better crap. Anyone with eyeballs can see that. Stop trolling.

I know, that's why I said it You're still looking backwards. He had a crappy start to the season in Utica, it's well documented. He is showing progress, and by all accounts things are starting to "click" for him. Why you expect to see that immediately on his 2016/17 stat sheet is beyond me.
-
I don't think you realize what it's like to have a professional sports team full of younger players. We've had a very veteran team for the past while, but you have to realize that these 20-25 year old kids are going to be going around town and flaunting their money. What Jake does on non-hockey nights doesn't concern me, as long as he is going to show up to camp next year ready to play. Obviously last year he wasn't physically or mentally prepared, but people need to stop complaining about what happened at the start of this season (it's done, he made mistakes, get over it) and start focusing on what is happening now.
-
Disagree. Willie could roll four lines, develop prospects. Kind of like he did his first season here, when you know.. we actually made the playoffs
-
I was supposed to be trying out my new switch this weekend, but Canada Post.

How many minutes do you reckon he gets with Willie at the helm?
