@VanGnome "comprehension" eh? you haven't made a convincing case for why a flag is off limits as a protest focal point in a society based on free speech. Try again.

If it was a "cheap stunt" we wouldn't still be talking about it. Clearly it was effective.

@Jimmy McGill I never said it was off limits, certainly it's open season if the argument behind their sentiment had merit. What I'm pointing out is they are hyper-focusing on the flag as the "big shiny object", when the real issue is not the flag, but the perversion of the ideals that flag stands for by the people in power, and the people emboldened by those in power who are aligned in thinking.

When you look at it in that context, then the ideals of the flag still hold merit. It's the people who need to change, not the flag. By openly expressing discontent with the flag as a means to protest the actions of others, they are in effect advocating to change what the flag means in order to invalidate the way people think and act; in the process they denigrate the memory of those who gave their lives, and continue to do so for the original ideals of what the flag represents.

Soldiers don't give their lives because of who is in power, they give their lives for the concept of liberty, freedom and justice, and trying to uphold those values. There is a way to achieve the change they want without disrespecting the spirit of what the flag represents.

If the flag universally stood for evil, oppression and divisiveness sure by all means protest the flag. But it doesn't, so don't. The current socio-economic and social climate in general is a byproduct of the actions of people who have perverted and corrupted the original ideals of the flag.

@VanGnome There is a study that shows most people who join the army don't do it for the concept of liberty, freedom, and justice but rather that it is a byproduct of their actions. Rather, they choose to to do it because it offers a secure job opportunity providing money to their family when they have no other place to turn. People who join the army are wanting to blow "terrorists" up or anything that is not their country.
