How can I start a career in sports journalism?

find a journalism program and also a sports education program or something like kinesiology. whenever possible lean into sports options. even if it a minor hockey league team like a bchl or ubc go find out when they practice and just ask for an interview with their captain. once you get the knowledge behind you try getting an intermship at team 1040 or some sport focused radio. Maybe go find a semi big name and ask if you can volunteer for a week or 2 helping them. you might not get paid but the connections/willingness to learn will go a LONG way just like any industry. as well as you are smart, passionate, and hungry for the next story im sure you will be just fine. if you are just looking for a easy job of being on tv and talking inbetween intermissions of games like Don Cherry then wrong industry imo. its not that simple and like the guy above me said. Retired sports figures whether coaches or players will be on tv wayyyy easier then others.
anyway hope i helped.

First off, you need to make sure that sports journalism really is your passion, because to be honest it's a shrinking industry. With so many blogging websites popping up everywhere where people get free content, news papers and sports networks are constantly downsizing these days and laying off guys who have had jobs for 20 years. Look at Jeff Patterson these days. Dude wrote for the province for how long and then gets canned.
Im not trying to discourage you, but just saying you need to be 100% sure sports journalism is where you want to be
