I really hope for his sake we don't see Baertschi. These games mean nothing and it's six months until the next pre-season starts. That time could be the difference between a career and no career.
-
MT is one of those players that other teams hate and drags his teammates along with him when the going gets tough this time of year. Difficult to watch. I wish Bo had more bite to his game. It would sure be useful at times.

Yes and Woo has more points than Shea Weber did in their D+1 year in Junior. Unless the Canucks sign a FA RHD Woo will get an opportunity next year. Right or wrong. Time will tell.
-
The difference is Woo plays the right side and if he doesn't look out of place/can play he will get an opportunity to stick.
-
Or the most desperate. If Woo isn't a downgrade on what they have at the time and he doesn't look out of place he will play - at least 9 games. Tanev can't stay healthy at all anymore and Stecher is all they have on the right side and he is a 5/6 on a decent team. Biega is an 8. Hughes - Woo may just be the top pairing in 2 - 3 years based on whats in the pipe outside a FA signing or 2.
-
I hope they are all gone / replaced.
-
Exactly. It's really basic math. Trouble is these players don't always co-operate.

Weber wasn't a point per game player in the WHL. So, Woo may be even better than Weber.

Regarding Eriksson I agree. The Swedish effect (and his contract) may be what's keeping him in the lineup as he may be in a mentoring role along with Edler for Pettersson. This plus noone has applied pressure from within to fill that spot - Gaunce? Now that Pearson is here and depending on who they can get via trade or FA on LW who knows. That contract is an issue but becoming slightly less so. I hope they are able to move him some how.......

If he doesn't believe he makes the NHL this year (which would be a long shot at RW) he is likely better off in the NCAA. He can play a leadership role, work on his game and further his education. As mentioned these kids are smart and understand there is life after hockey - rather early especially if they don't stick in the NHL.

You only get battle hardened players ready for a playoff run by giving younger players opportunities to develop. This is the time, not when you are in the window.

I agree your version of a third line center isn't quite like mine or what appears to be the trend in the NHL. I just think that a team in transition with good young players earning/needing the experience and opportunity, challenged for offense while at the same time the veteran appears to be breaking down and that we may be able to recoup some of his value. That is my time line. I have seen this rodeo before. Nothing against Sutter. I am done and we won't change each others versions of what we see. Have a good one.
-
Is Gaudette not touted/promoted as a third line center? So when does he get the opportunity? Your comments about a one line team support my commentary about the need for more offensive output. Sutter will not provide that. The scoring slump is not because Sutter was out. It's because the Canucks don't have enough offense and Edler and Tanev were out. Brad Richardson at $1.25MM / year has had a better face off percentage and we had him. I believe Sutter has been hyped too much - not his fault he's a good defensive player. I believe it is over sold based on the need to not look bad for the deal including Nick Bonino and a second rounder for Sutter and a third rounder and a 5 year $4.375MM contract with a NTC. Brandon Sutter: Brad Richardson: Nick Bonino:

Yes we need better top six wingers. Better wingers in the top six means Sutter is better than Gaudette because other wingers move down? As I said none of the players I mention will play top six now let alone later so ........ I quoted Sutters last 2 years. He hasn't been overly impressive. If anything Greene leans on Sutter because it's the safe option, not necessarily the best in my opinion any longer. He has probably averaged 50% over his career. Gaudette will be 23 when the season starts. He's not a kid anymore. Look how Stecher and Hutton have flourished with some extra responsibility. Good players rise to the occasion given the opportunity (Horvat etc). There is becoming a perception (real or not) that some of the young players aren't getting a fair shake or opportunity for growth. Both Tanev and Edler make a difference, whether Sutter or Gaudette are playing 3rd line Center. I am talking about offense more than defense in our bottom six. This team needs to progress and become more creative offensively - top six and bottom six. I believe Gaudette offers that potential given the opportunity.

How do better wingers for Petterson dictate who plays on the third and fourth line? Petterson will most likely always receive the prime O zone starts no matter what. He is the 1st line center at this point and most skilled. Which personnel are we currently missing in my scenario that would play top six in any event? Roussel - Gaudette - Virtanen - could be a nice third line. Motte - Beagle - MacEwen Here are Sutter's stats over the past 2 seasons: They don't indicate dominant face off prowess. I would think Gaudette could manage to attain those numbers given the opportunity to learn from experience and coaching. Maybe Gaudette, Beagle and Malhotra need to spend some time together this summer. I would rather have a line that has speed and can create than one that is solely one dimensional focused on just getting the puck out. Here are Beagles: Edler and Tanev shouldn't be included in your comparison. The whole team struggles when they are out (Sutter and Gaudette included) and it's not related to the discussion regarding Sutter vs Gaudette in my opinion.

I would rather have a line that has speed and can create than one that is solely one dimensional focused on just getting the puck out. Faceoff % isn't the only measurement if you don't have the skill to do anything other than bank it of the glass (hopefully not lose it) and change. Possession is the new NHL for good teams. This team will look different after the summer (I hope to heck) and I don't think Sutter - Eriksson - Granlund is a 3rd line that provides much to offer. That is actually a 4th line in the new NHL without any size.
-
Seems the new NHL is trending more to 3 offensive lines rather than the traditional 3rd shutdown line and 4th grind out the minutes line. If you have a third line comprised of players that can skate and produce offence like I noted maybe they won't be trapped in the D zone and can actually create some scoring chances. Sutter and Eriksson don't give other teams much to worry about. Roussel - Gaudette - Virtanen could.
-
I'm not disparaging what Sutter can bring if and when healthy. But I think if they can get a decent return at the draft they should trade him. Some picks especially in the second (I know) or third round would be useful and I am hopeful Gaudette will be prepared next year to step in that slot. Time to give some more responsibility and opportunity to the young guys. Roussel - Gaudette - Virtanen - could be a nice third line. Motte - Beagle - MacEwen The Eriksson effect lingers.

Dahlen left the farm team initially (last year) to return to his Allsvenskan team because he wasn't ready for the AHL (mono/wasn't prepared and with the teams blessing). Palmu left because he wanted playing time he wasn't prepared to earn or put in the work for. (with the teams assistance and permission) Juolevi also left/wasn't placed in the AHL to play in Finland under Salo's tutelage because of injury and he was deemed not ready for the AHL, also with the team's blessing and understanding. I think there is a big misconception about who plays regular top six shifts at a young age in the AHL. Yes it's a developmental league but it is made up of grown men (earning a living for their families or trying to get to or back to the NHL), not just 19 and 20 year old kids. Look at the average age of the players on the successful farm teams (Tampa / Toronto etc) and they aren't made up of kids. It takes time to get from the AHL to the NHL, unless you are a highly skilled sure fire bet who just needs some pro seasoning like a Nylander type or........ It's a tough league, purposely. Put in the work. Sometimes it takes a year or 2 or 3. If you are lucky and work hard you may get rewarded. It does these kids no service sending them in unprepared.

Played a simple game. Stayed with his man in front of the net. Shots were quick decisions and on net. If he can add some toughness to that on a consistent basis I can live with that for a bottom pair RHD.

If Dahlen thought he was ready and really wasn't this is best. This way Dahlen gets a fresh start and Pettersson doesn't get dragged into an ongoing saga and constant grilling from the media. If I remember correctly JP Barry is a very outspoken agent and this could have gotten ugly and become a lingering distraction. I saw Dahlen as somewhat gifted offensively but not a complete 200 foot player and from some reports a bit soft. That can be frustrating for these young players who have had success, especially if your coaches are trying to get you to play a 200 foot game and it stifles your offense - initially. Pettersson has committed to a 200 foot game. That impresses me the most of what he has shown this year. It bodes well. The interesting thing is that Dahlen appears to now be behind a serious log jam in San Jose. This is likely not his last stop before the NHL unless he surprises. Careful what you wish for. From what I understand and have read Karlsson is a gamer with skill. Greene has a vision and I hope he has the time and players to get there before he's gone.

In regards to Mazanek: I know a lot of teams are/were scrambling for goalies. Which is why I wonder why could he only get a 6th round pick and a waiver eligible career AHL goalie for Nilsson who is an NHL goalie on an expiring contract? Subsequently losing McKenna on waivers and ending up with only a 6th round pick for Nilsson. The Flyers and Senators say thank you.

Well my post(s) were based on potential. Your post is quite a stretch. I wonder how many would agree that Horvat is a proven "1st line center" in the NHL. There may be some issues with that statement.
