Seattle Expansion Draft - Who do the Canucks protect?
ruilin96 replied to lukchin's topic in Canucks Talk
Two more years after this year would mean Hughes has played 4 full seasons in the NCAA. On August 15th 2021, he is an UFA and can sign anywhere he wants to. The advantage of owning a NCAA player’s rights is to sign him before his 4th year, give him a contract and signing bonuses a year or two earlier to sweeten the deal so he will sign with your team. It was rumoured that Hughes already couldn’t wait to turn pro this season, if we choose not to sign him until 2 years later, you risk angering your premium prospect and he could go anywhere he wants. For example, he could just bolt and sign on the same team that his brother Jack Hughes gets drafted to and we will be screwed. I will say just sign him at the end of the year and make sure he is our guy. It would mean we have to use a protection slot on him in the Seattle Expansion but it also reflects that as an organization, we recognize Hughes as a big part of our future. -
The 2017 draft at the time was seen as a relatively weak draft with average players and not a lot of elite talent. Mittlestadt at the time was consider one of the more promising players who could become a 1st line center. He also had a good WJC (I personally am not too hype up or get too down with players performance at WJC). In recent years, players with a good WJC gets hyped by the media a lot. Not a lot of media coverage on junior games or NCAA games, and if a player have a good WJC, they get a lot of vibe. Remember the hype around Hogdson and Schroeder after their WJC performances? It is similar to that.

It boggles my mind why the NCAA does this. Why can't OT points count on official score-sheet as well? I can't think of any other leagues at any level or international games does this.

I love the way Jake plays even when he isn't scoring he is using his speed to create chances and hitting opponents. He is coming along fine. I believe him to be a consistent 20 goal scorer for us for the next few years.

At some point of this rebuild, JB needs to find a way to pull off a “Courtnall, Ronning, Momesso etc.” kind of major blockbuster deal to bolster the team. Similar to what the Flames did to bring in Lindholm and Hanifan.

Recently read “Journey Under the Midnight Sun” by Keigo Higashino, English translation of the book is available. I am a Harry Potter fan, it’s been 6 years since I last read the series as a whole from book 1-7, I am currently re-reading that series again.

They won on the March game against Columbus I went to! Demko’s first game and got his first win!

Dobson’s team is just atrocious right now in the QMJHL. He is actually 2nd on his team in scoring. His numbers doesn’t tell the whole story. I see him getting traded to a QMJHL contending team soon.

I was one of these ppl who ranked Walhstrom ahead of Tkachuk. Reasons why I am just a fan and scouts are the ones getting paid.
-
What’s more surprising to me is Wahlstrom is only at 3G 1A 4 points with 11 GP.
-
3 on 3 OTs in the future could end in the first minute if we start with EP, BB and QH.

I can't wait to see him next month in the WJC! I love USA games are here in Victoria this year, I would definitely go to watch him play!

Over the past season, I have stated that I don't see Gaunce become a NHL regular because of his lack of offense. However, it seems like to me he always play the game in a right way defensively and never out of position and can be counted on to play shut-down hockey. Right now, I would rather have him the Canucks line-up instead of Leipsic. Atleast Gaunce handles his minutes and well plays his role well. He is the ideal 13th forward on the team. Leipsic needs to figure it out soon or else he will just be Linden Vey 2.0

Detroit was going to draft Hughes even after the first 4 selections. Going into the draft, Ken Holland was quoted to want to draft a puck moving offensive defence man. With Hughes playing in Michigan, they saw him at their backyard and was ready to pick him at 6. JB really wanted Hughes and was revealed that JB was trying to jump up to 4th or 5th spot to sneak ahead of Detroit to get him. Then there comes the Coyotes, drafted Haytton at 5, which throws a hughe curveball to the draft. Detroit must have had Zadina ranked higher than Hughes and they didn’t pass up on the opportunity and drafted Zadina instead. It worked out perfectly for JB and the management staff because Hughes fell right to our laps without having to lose any assets to get him. To me, I think Coyotes would of been smarter if they traded down to 7th swapping picks with the Canucks and gain extra assets. Chances are, they still would of gotten Haytton. Because, I don’t think Detroit has Haytton ahead of Zadina on their board. I am not going to make fun of the Coyotes for picking Haytton at 5 like most others, because most ppl made fun of us taking EP at 5 just the year earlier. If Haytton turns out to be a Patrice Bergeron type of player (which his best case projects to be), Coyotes would feel pretty good about this pick. I am just glad the Canucks got Hughes out of all this because I don’t think we have ever had a defenceman at Hughes caliber ever in franchise history.

I see his production and progress similar to Nick Bonino. Both him and Bonino are late round picks and spent 3 years in the NCAA before turning pro. Both have productive college careers. Bonino only has 2 points in his first 35 NHL games with the Ducks. Gaudette thus far has 5 points in 26 NHL games. Bonino didn’t find his scoring touch at the NHL level until has 4th year in the NHL. Prior to that, Bonino mainly played a shut-down bottom 6 role. I see Gaudette taking a similar path, and eventually he will break out and produce at around 40 point a year player. For a 5th round pick, I consider this as a win for the club.

Hughes in an interview said he has been watching Canucks game highlights, I bet he is already dreaming about passing the puck to EP or Brock for one-timers already!
-
He will learn to fight through it. I think this stretch will be great learning experience for him in the long run.
-
Someone please knock the $&!# out of this guy who hit Sven next week when the Knights are in town.

Madden is up to a very surprisingly good start to his freshmen year in NCAA. To put it in retro respective, Wahlstrom only has 2G in 8 GP thus far, and he is a high draft pick.
-
I refuse to believe that this guy is worst than Pouliot and Del Zotto right now. Hopefully, we get to see him call up mid-season and he can stick around from there.
-
I have a feeling he is going to get called up soon and play on the #1 PP. If he gets going offensively, we may see the end of Pouliot as a Canuck.

Happy Birthday to our Swedish golden boy - Elias Pettersson!!

Speaking of acquiring UFAs. If we are really going to look for another top-6 center to strengthen the depth of the team for a cup run, the guy I have in mind is Mikael Granlund. He has another year left on his contract after this season, so we will look to get him in the summer of 2020. The Wild are the oldest team in the NHL, their window to win is slim and if they don’t win this year or next, they will look for a tear down rebuild. Mikael Granlund would still only be 28 at the time, still in his prime, he likely won’t want to stay in Minnesota for a rebuild. Chances are, he will walk as a UFA. He plays a very strong 2-way game and can also produce proficiently in the top-6. He is also Markus’s brother and if things are trending up for us with Markus on our team, he may consider signing here with us. By the summer of 2020, I see the team will be looking to take that next step and try and build towards being a contender. A 1-2-3 punch of EP, Horvat and Granlund would be a very strong top 3 Center group. This is a much better option than Duchene. -
Game of inches. That's the difference between Goldobin and Patrick Kane. If you can pull it off consistently, you are Patrick Kane, if not, you are like Nikolay Goldobin. Sometimes, he should just settle down, not worry about fancy play, but making the right play and make the play he envision to happen is more important. Right now, he is try to immitate EP or Kane and it leads to too many turnovers. He should watch EP closely, see when EP tries to dangle and when EP actually just make the simple play. He has the good hands and offensive instincts, it's a matter of putting it together.

When Brock returns I will like to see Virtanen-Pettersson-Boeser as a line. This could be the ultimate dream combo line made up of playmaker, goal-scorer and power forward.
