I remember the 2016 Draft, Canucks had the #5. I remember before the lottery, we had a chance at a Top 3 and to get Laine. Boy, did I want Laine. But here we are 3 years later, and Laine is wanting a new contract. Last year he struggled, played lazy, unproductive, disinterested - Fortnite might've had something to do with it too I understand that Laine is undecided where he wants to play now. He wants big money, and is apparently thinking about a trade to a team willing to pay him more, or signing an offer sheet with another team, if the Jets don't pay up. He has no loyalty to the Jets and is just out to get rich. Thank the Hockey Gods we didn't get Laine

Caufield is very confident in himself, and even feels he's one of the fastest skaters for his size. I have a feeling he's going to do just fine one day during the NHL regular season, I can see him putting up 30-40 goals. Playoffs is a different beast though, and this is where he might disappear. Podkolzin is so good, fast and gritty. If the interviews with him go well and he's still around at #10, I hope Benning takes a chance on him.

For some reason, I would have no issue with the Canucks signing Panarin (forward) for $10-12, but in no way would I want to sign Karlsson (D) for the same amount, if given the choice. I'm thrilled the Canucks have Quinn Hughes, and I think he could change the way the Canucks play the game. He's so creative. If Benning does go out and sign a UFA Dman, I hope it's Edler first, and then maybe a guy like Ben Chiarot (WPG), who would be much cheaper - so they can pay Panarin

I find this series very difficult to watch - thanks to Don Cherry. It must be better than Viagra for him. I'm sure he was cheering for BOS in 2011. I wish he'd retire already. Any chance he gets he talks about his glory days coaching Orr, he babbles on and on making no sense half the time, and you'd think by now he'd learn better English eh? If you can't pronounce the players' names, then it's time to go.

Well, I guess everything's peachy-keen in Utica then? Dahlen probably got frustrated, not getting the chance in the NHL (with all 3 teams), and decided he would be better off going back to Sweden to play. Basically traded Burrows for Linus Karlsson then. Still, a good trade for VAN. Unfortunate it didn't work out for Dahlen here. I would've liked to see Pettersson and Dahlen play. I have my doubts now, that he'll ever play in the NHL. He's too impatient to put in the work.

Yes, that's right, but I have a feeling LA and ANA will rebuild very quickly, and still be a thorn in the Canucks' side the whole way. Speaking of McCann, he looked great at the Worlds. Here's hoping Pearson can have a career year on Bo's wing. 45+ points should do it The rich keep getting richer in Vegas. They have the #17 and they don't have to participate in the expansion Draft. EDM hired Holland to run the show, so I expect that team to take a big step forward, they will be a contender in 2 years. CGY and SJ are already contenders and don't look to be slowing down. ARI has a better prospect pool than us. So, how does Jim keep up? I really like Benning, but the Canucks need him (or another GM) to be more assertive.
-
Come on Jim, Canucks need another 1st! Don't let LA and ANA show you up like that Pacific LA - #5 and #22 ANA - #9 and #29 EDM - #8 VAN - #10 ARI - #14 VGK - #17 CGY - #26 SJ - none
-
I can see EDM going D as well, like last year. Broberg is my guess, but I could see Soderstrom too. I guess the more teams that pick D ahead of us the better IMO. I want an elite forward at #10. Take the best D at #40. Yes, the Canucks need D, but we don't know what conversations Benning has been having with Tryamkin (if any) to bring him here. I imagine they'll re-sign Edler. Hughes will make the team, Juolevi might too. Suddenly, the D depth looks okay: Edler - Tanev Tryamkin - Hughes Hutton - Stecher Juolevi - Schenn Rathbone - Woo Thomson or Vlasic

yeah, I'm not sure why I sound panicked lol I think goaltending and C are the only areas where there are no real concerns. I wonder what Goldobin is working on this off season too, and what kind of player he'll be this fall when he shows up to camp. Really hoping he improves and fits into one of the Top 6 wing positions. With the #10, I have no doubt they will get a good player, but the Canucks have to remember that there are three divisional teams ahead of them in the picking order (LA, ANA, EDM). Other teams are keeping pace, even going beyond what the Canucks are doing these days. LA and ANA also have two 1st rounders each this year. Benning needs another 1st rounder, at the least. Someone mentioned that the 2020 Draft will be the best one in years? Maybe the Canucks need another Top 10 pick for next year too.
-
Nylander's contract could look very good in 2-3 years though. He looked like a different player at the Worlds, more involved, gritty, great puck possession, goals. I believe TOR wants to keep him though, as part of their core. lol, DiPietro might turn out to be a real good goaltender one day, but if Demko has taken the reigns, when will DiPietro get a chance as a starter? Maybe he'll be trade bait in a few years? Who knows, maybe he even supplants Demko as the starter down the road?
-
I noticed that, if anything, DiPietro is much heavier than Binnington. I imagine Binnington (an inch taller and 25 pounds lighter) to be pretty wirey. He's had an outstanding year. But they can't all be Binningtons. Maybe DiPietro becomes a starter in the NHL one day? Not if Demko has anything to say about it.
-
It sounds like the Canucks may not want to take on any bad contracts, and if this is the case, then I think any deals with TOR are out. They won't want to take any salary (player) back either. They'll probably want prospects and picks in return. (eg) Kapanen to VAN for Lind and a 2nd.
-
Could this be the best line in the NHL in 3 years? Panarin - Pettersson - Podkolzin A Swedish phenom flanked by two highly skilled Russians. Tryamkin says "yes please" lol
-
You make a good point, I was just looking at the Canucks prospects and it's kind of bleak. The Top 6 is lacking too. I see Baertschi as the #1LW, and he's not even that great, when he plays that is. Virtanen is struggling to put things together, Goldobin is an enigma, Lind and Gadjovich are struggling to find their footing in the AHL. DiPietro is too small to be a game-changing goalie in the NHL IMO lol I know, I'm full of sunshine this morning. My apologies for the negativity. On the bright side: Woo could be a top 4 Dman, Rathbone has potential. Madden and Lockwood should become good, gritty middle 6 players. MacEwen should become a good bottom 6 guy. I guess the Canucks will get 2-3 more prospects in a few weeks we can get excited about. They currently have 1 Top 6 winger (Boeser), they need 4. Maybe Benning signs a UFA or two? (eg) sign Panarin and draft either: Dach, Cozens, Podkolzin, or Caufield. Panarin - Pettersson - Boeser Pearson - Horvat - (Dach-Cozens-Pod-Caufield)

The rumour of an Eriksson for Lucic swap is starting to make some sense then, maybe this will gain traction. Although, if it's a one-for-one, then I don't know why Benning does this. Lucic has an extra year and Eriksson is a superior defensive player IMO, with better speed. I guess we'll see what happens. Also, I guess this would quash any rumours of a deal with TOR to take on one of their bad contracts, in hopes of getting Nylander or Kapanen?
-
Draft Picks, Prospects, Players What could we get? Baertschi - untradeable Goldobin - low value (potential), 3rd or prospect? Sutter - 3rd and prospect? Eriksson - to EDM for Lucic and a 2nd or 3rd Granlund - 4th? Spooner - low value, 5th? Schaller - low value, 6th Tanev - 2nd and a prospect? Not overly promising, the returns. But what if they packaged (1) Tanev with DiPietro and then (2) Goldobin with Sutter and Brisebois?, as examples. Would those two trades get the Canucks two more (mid-late) 1st round picks? If they had 3 first rounders, they could get a Forward, a D and Spencer Knight. Going into the home Draft with one 1st, is pretty sad. The issue I have with Benning is he seems adverse to trading anyone of value. But you have to give in order to get. EDIT - I stand corrected, he did trade Gudbranson for Pearson.
-
This was regarding Gostisbehere. I wonder if PHI fans are saying "geez, would love to get Virtanen to play with Patrick, but I think the cost may be too high" lol
-
I agree, but I guess it depends who he has at the top of his list? I was totally fooled in the 2017 Draft when he went with Pettersson. Even last year I was pretty sure we were getting Boqvist, Bouchard or Dobson. Luckily, Hughes fell into their lap. Hope that happens again. He might really like Cozens, for instance, due to him being born and raised in an environment (Yukon) where communities are tight-knit and the people have values and a certain character. Cozens may have overcome challenges and adversity the other top draft eligible haven't. I would love to get Cozens. Probably dreaming. Hoping some teams ahead of the Canucks take unassuming players: NJ - Kakko NYR - Hughes CHI - Byram COL - Dach LA - Turcotte DET - Podkolzin BUF - Zegras EDM - Broberg ANA - Boldy VAN - Cozens! just a Q - Does anyone see any similarity between Vilardi and Boldy?
-
Yeah, it's a little strange, but I kind of really like it. I find the logo blends in much better with the rest of the uniform.
-
Why, Quinn Hughes of course Actually, I have no idea.
-
Pearson - Horvat - Kapanen would be a good line. How expensive would he be? He had a pretty good year last season (20 goals) and he's only 22. Who did he play with? I think it was Matthews, but not sure if that changed.
-
I think Benning is going to sign a UFA for Bo's line this off season? That's what I gathered anyway. I agree that Bo needs an upgrade to his RW, he certainly deserves it. I wouldn`t mind seeing them sign Eberle, Nyqvist or Donskoi as his RW. I do like Pearson as his LW. I was thinking more that Pettersson is the star C on the top line and he'll need top wingers, like Boeser. Baertschi is a 2nd liner at best IMO, and there is the health concern. He's the Canucks best LW, they need an upgrade here. They don't have any (projected) top 6 wingers in their system either, unless they see Lind taking huge strides. Whether it's a winger for Pettersson or Horvat down the road, my hope is they draft Dach, Cozens, Zegras or Boldy, in that order. If those guys are gone, maybe they go with a D? I'm also really curious where the Canucks have Caufield ranked.
-
I noticed there is no green in the away jerseys, at all. ??? Interesting. I'd like to see a full jersey of this concept.
-
Interesting that Hughes is skipping the combine. Says he wants to rest because he's played a lot of hockey and doesn't want to risk injury. Wasn't he a healthy scratch for the last couple of games at the Wolds? Well, I guess in comparison to his peers (who have had time off) he has played more. I still think Kakko is the best player. Also interesting to me, article on Caufield in the paper where he says that he feels he brings more speed than other players his size, and has strength. He also says he wouldn't be the same player if he was a big player, that he uses his small stature to 'get lost' in the crowd. I've noticed this as well during the U18. He's very elusive. I know the Canucks can use a good Dman, but I feel, after Byram, it's a toss-up between Harley, Soderstrom, York, Broberg, Seider and Heinola. Then after that, there's still Robertson, Bjornfot, Vlasic, Warren, Johnson, Honka, Thomson, Korczak, etc. Lots of good D. My heart is kind of leaning towards drafting a top 6 forward with the #10, for Pettersson line, to get excited about the amazing offence to come. I would be very happy with Cozens or Zegras with the 1st, and maybe Bjornfot or Thomson with the 2nd.

Would be great if the Canucks could get another 1st. Never mind moving up, its too expensive. Or trading down, they need a top 10 pick. Three picks in the Top 40 would help team depth.
