  1. While these situations aren't terribly common (prior game going well beyond 9, leaving the staff depleted), the Jays have had what seems to be more than their fair share this year and dickey stepped up. Gotta give credit where credit is due. They needed him to step up and he more than answered the call. As for his prior starts, that unpredictability is one issue I have with the knuckleball. It's the essence of the pitch, and sometimes (like last night) it pays off in spades while other nights it just kills the team. Live by the sword, die by the sword I guess. That veteran presence is one reason why I'm more than happy to have RA around (as I've mentioned before) if it were at a cheaper price. The way he deflected the question away from his own personal praise and used it as a way to acknowledge the kid's great debut was super classy. As for Musgrove, he looked awesome last night and it's hard to believe how that trade looks now. I can't really remember, but wasn't he considered a very good prospect st the time? Considering they were acquiring the "old" (as opposed to the "new") JA Happ the trade looks like crap now. More of a mean-nothing trade than anything though.
  2. @RUPERTKBD Dickey pitched a great game. Also liked what he had to say about Danny Barnes in his post-game interview- classy as always.
  3. A real base stealing threat who could get the meat of the order s few more fastballs would be great. Pillar and Upton can both do that but I'm not sure they get on base enough.
  4. They're (IMO) definitely better than they were at the start of the day, so that's a plus.
  5. Could be a good move, could be a terrible move. Any word on the pieces going either way?
  6. Yeah, I'm not saying that there's no similarities but they're pretty different as players. From what I've read of Jr, he most likely ends up at 1st base or as a below average 3rd baseman. He lacks the athleticism and arm strength to play the position at a high level, two tools his father was noted for. His bat is what will make his career. His power is impressive, especially at his age. Being as young as he is many things could change still but this is how it looks at the moment.
  7. I thought they were considered to be quite different. Jr doesn't have the lean body type and raw athleticism that his dad did. Arm strength is a knock on him while it was a + tool for his dad. From what I've read he has a little more raw power than his dad but not the same ability to make consistent hard contact and cover the whole hitting zone (neither is unusual at his age though). Vlad Sr was a 5 tool guy but it sounds like Jr will have to rely on his ability to hit for power to establish himself as a major leaguer.
  8. Yeah it's just the natural rivalry as a Jays fan. he seems like a solid guy, and he's one of my favourites to watch. I don't think there's much he can't do on a baseball field.
  9. Oriole or not, Adam Jones is one of my favourite players since I started watching baseball around twelve years ago. What an athlete.
  10. Also, as much as we complain about Thor for Dickey, what about Jones for Bedard? I'd be pissed as a Mariners fan.
  11. Yeah he's right up there for most home runs in the last couple years, maybe the most. He's a big, powerful man. I think he's got some real holes in his swing that can be exposed though. I think I mentioned Trumbo. Another big, strong guy and he's having a hell of a year. I remember being in awe at some of the bombs he hit in the derby a couple years back. There seems to be some redundancy in that lineup though between Davis, Trumbo, and Alvarez.
  12. I don't know- I wouldn't sell guys like Machado, Jones, or Davis short. Machado and Jones are two of the best in all of baseball and Machado is still just scratching the surface. Trumbo is having a tremendous year as well. They don't have the pitching the Jays do though. Side note, there's very few things I enjoy more than waking up on a nice Saturday/Sunday morning and watching the Jays with a pot of coffee.
  13. Big break right there snd there's the team first approach we've all been yelling for.
  14. I'd take that. Rich hill is having a good year. Logan has had some good years but I don't think he's fared well in that launching pad of colorado's.
  15. It seems a little steep a price. I don't know if the Jays could've put together a package even in the same ballpark without totally decimating the cupboard, and I don't think Cashner is worth doing that for.
  16. Josh Naylor is rumored to be part of the package for Cashner.
  17. This is fair enough, and we have no way of knowing the true workings of the market, but I would've liked to see them decline the option and explore other possibilities. If that didn't work you could try dickey again, and if he's gone then they could've gone with a platoon job like I suggested (which is a perfectly acceptable strategy given the strength of the top 3 of Happ, stro, and Estrada). Stro is having a tough year but that wasn't the forecast last winter. That said, I don't remember there being much in the way of free agent relievers to sign with the money they could've saved. Not using hindsight, Lowe may have been a good choice to retain though.
  18. Sanchez being a pleasant surprise is what I said, isn't it? the organization didn't know what they would have in him. You've ignored that I listed Happ and Estrada ahead of dickey. I disagree regarding the depth chart ranking as well. I still believe Happ and Estrada were considered to be ahead of dickey based on last season. Happ is debatable but it seems (to me at least) that the organization acquired him based largely on his time in Pittsburgh, not his entire body of work. I don't recall anybody being critical of the team retaining him but I do recall some criticism of the numbers. They could've declined the option and negotiated a new contract. If that didn't work then there was other options to explore in free agency. Again, I think he deserves a spot at the end of the rotation (that much is obvious) and I believe that we saw that's where he'd end up with Stro, Happ, and Estrada around. Sanchez is just gravy.
